1 LIBERTY BAPTIST CHURCH LIBERTY RINGS Monthly Newsletter November 2017 November is the month when we celebrate Thanksgiving! This is one of my favorite holidays, since it includes lots of good home-cooked food, time with family, and a little football on the side. Sounds good to me! Thanksgiving of course is a lot more than all that. It is a time to remember God s rich blessings and to be especially thankful for His abundant goodness in salvation. I ve been reading some devotional thoughts about contentment, a Christian virtue closely related to gratitude. Contentment is the opposite of covetousness, worldliness, and greed. Here a few thoughts from Richard Baxter ( ) found in Voices from the Past: There is no cure for an earthly mind, but by presenting far greater matters to the mind. If a man were given the sight of heaven and hell, he would consider the world less than he did before. You are immortal souls, made for God himself, to admire him, love him, serve him and enjoy him. O beg of God a heavenly light and mind to look often into heaven, and worldliness will vanish away in shame. Cast your eye on invisible and eternal things, and you will scarce have leisure to consider the temporal. A man led to execution scarce looks at the shops in the street as he passes by. Consider the great needs wealth cannot supply. Money cannot buy pardon or a clear conscience. Judas brought back his money and hung himself. Money cannot enlighten a blinded mind, soften a hardened heart, humble a proud heart, or justify a guilty soul. The greatest wealth cannot keep away death. Money will not help you in the day of judgment. Worldliness keeps man from repentance and coming home to God. Is there any other thing that so hinders the conversion of sinners as earthly things? Pastor s Paragraph Consider also these golden truths about contentment found in Scripture: 1 Timothy 6: But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 2 P A G E 2 L I B E R T Y R I N G S Missions There s a lot of emphasis and focus where I live on the dead. Every Thai person observed a month of mourning over the death of their good king who died a year ago (October.) Every person has been wearing black to exhibit their grief. The temples have been full with Thai s bringing their offerings to dead stone idols. Even their flowers are wooden and dead, that they offer to the king s funeral pyre. The flowers are made to burn with a sweet aroma that rises up to a golden statue that is without any life at all. The idol cannot smell the aroma, nor can it see or hear the chanting worshippers. Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. (Hab. 2:19). Thai people also worship their ancestors who are dead and have built multiple shrines in every house and business to ward off dead, ghostly spirits that may visit. Perhaps what grieves and burdens me the most is that the people do not realize or know they are dead. And those who worship idols become like them dumb Po er s Field - LBC Missionary, Janet Chaney and blind and deaf. More and more hardened, more and more life-less. Sometimes when I look out among the vast masses of people, I can relate to Ezekiel when the Spirit of the Lord led him out into that valley of dry bones. God had a specific purpose for Ezekiel in that place and that time which is different than my experience here today, but the Scripture still speaks to me. The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones; and caused me to pass by them round about: and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and lo, they were very dry. Ezekiel 37:1-2. There are days when it looks like that a vast valley filled with dead bones. The dead bones, just like the lost coin in Luke 15 are unaware of their condition. But I love the Lord s question to Ezekiel as they viewed the valley full of dry bones. And He said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? Well, it would appear NOT and looks like an impossible situation but Ezekiel doesn t reply in this way or have this attitude. Ezekiel replies, And I answered, O Lord God, Thou knowest. Ezekiel 37:3. Then of all things, God directs Ezekiel to preach the word of the Lord to the dead, dry bones. I picture Ezekiel standing there, gazing over the dead, dry bones with this task given to him by God and I get a small inkling of what that is like when I am tasked to teach the word of God to the people each week in our groups. But here is the best part of it all! Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live. Ezekiel 37:5. The Lord God still raises people from the dead into new life in Jesus Christ! It is solely His Breath, His Life, His Word, His Light, His Power through His Gospel by His Grace that brings about this miracle of the dead rising up to new life in Christ. I know you join with me in praising God for every bit of Light that He shines in the darkness here, and where you are also! We praise Him for every time and occasion that His Spirit breathes on us and restores life and sight! And this is His promise from Ezekiel 36:26, A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. Pray with us that the Lord will make many alive who are dead and bring them into everlasting life with Him now and for eternity! THE Voice of the Martyrs Please Pray The most common request of persecuted Christians is PRAY FOR US. One of the ways we answer their request is through participation in the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP), which we observe on the first Sunday of each November. Our goal is simple: We want EVERY CHURCH to Remember them that are in bonds on IDOP Sunday (Heb. 13:3). We also want Christians worldwide to pray throughout the year for those who suffer because of their Christian witness. Watch VOM s IDOP videos share with your friends and pray for the persecuted.

Join us Sunday, November 5th, as Liberty Baptist Church takes time to honor those brave soldiers who have served our country.

A special insert will be included in the bulletin listing the names of those in our congregation who have served or who are currently serving in our armed forces.

The least we civilians can do is to honor these heroes. Join us Sunday, November 5th, as Liberty Baptist Church takes time to honor those brave soldiers who have served our country. All veterans will be honored in both the 8:30am and 11:00am Worship services. A special insert will be included in the bulletin listing the names of those in our congregation who have served or who are currently serving in our armed forces. If you are a new member, please submit your name, rank and branch of service to the church office to be included in this special honorarium. Thank you for your service and may God richly bless you!
