2 building community preaching notes Today we focus on the second reading. The well know Gospel of Mary and Martha shows dichotomy between activism and spiritualism that mustn t be there. By focusing on the lessons of the second reading we see how to integrate daily activity with spiritual life. Let us listen attentively to the letter of Apostle Paul to the Colossians. I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according to God s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is Christ whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. An example of someone maturing in Christ. All are welcome to a summertime series of lunch time discussions on current Catholic topics. The format is very casual. Lunch will be provided in the comfort of an air conditioned meeting space. We will read a short journal or news article and have an open discussion about the ideas presented. Join us on specific Thursdays of the summer months in the Common Room located on the 3rd floor of Old Union from 12-12:45pm. We would especially encourage students to participate in this interactive ministry. Training is provided. You are scheduled approximately every 3 weeks. Whether you are here for a new degree program or just a few weeks for a summer camp, you are welcome to participate in the liturgical ministries. Lectors, eucharistic ministers, greeters,altar servers, and singers/instrumentalists are all scheduled on a drop-in basis over the summer. Singers/ instrumentalists meet at 3:30 in the church for a run-through rehearsal and then sing for Mass (9:30 for morning Mass in Old Union). Contact Teresa for more info, tpleins@stanford.edu. 3 The Reading Group: Our next meeting will be on Monday, August 22nd at the Gelpis house on campus (870 Tolman Drive) to discuss Louise Erdrich s LaRose. Erdrich s is our most distinguished and acclaimed Native American novelist, and her most recent book, LaRose, is a powerful story of guilt and forgiveness. It is readily available in print and e-format. All are welcome to join the conversation. Volunteer Opportunities St. Anthony Padua s Dining Room: The CC@S prepares and serves hot meals to those in need at St. Anthony s Padua Dining Room in Menlo Park ( paduadiningroom.com) every first and fourth Saturday of the month. If you would like to volunteer on Saturday, August 6 from 8:30-1pm or a subset thereof, please contact gary.glover@stanford.edu ( ) by the Wednesday before for information or to have a volunteer position reserved for you. In the gospel today Jesus says Go and treat your neighbor with respect. Backpack Program: Meet the Child receiving your donated Family Giving Tree Backpack! Help with Homework and Tutoring! The Family Giving Tree (FGT) and the Catholic Community at Stanford (CC@S) have joined together to provide CC@S members and other donors/volunteers an opportunity to meet the child who will receive your donated backpack and their family. These backpack recipients are children in grades 3-5 from low income families who live in East Palo Alto and are members of the Catholic Charities Youth Club at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Help with homework and tutoring opportunities are also available! 5 Offertory Take it to Worship. The preaching has prepared you to become a pro in your life and in your faith. You become pro by offering what you live in your life to God here at the mass. At the time of the offertory the General Instruction of the Roman Missal teaches: In the celebration of Mass the faithful form a holy people, a people of God s own possession and a royal Priesthood, so that they may give thanks to God and offer the unblemished sacrificial Victim not only by means of the hands of the Priest but also together with him and so that they may learn to offer their very selves. (GIRM, 95) You are invited to make this offering of yourselves along with the bread and wine offered at the altar by praying with our priest. The priest invites: Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. The people reply: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.
