2 Religious Ramblings A Letter from Fr. Carl Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT APRIL 11, 2010 Christ is Risen! Dear members of the Catholic Community at Stanford, It is with a mixture of excitement and sadness that I tell you that I will be moving on this summer. I will become the Pastor/Director of St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center in Salt Lake City on July 1 of this year. This winter was stressful for me. Our Western Dominican Province rumor mill was abuzz that I was going to be elected Prior (superior) of either of our House of Studies (our Dominican seminary ) in Oakland or the Novitiate House (where new Dominican brothers live for their first year in the Order) in San Francisco. While I could do either job, I did not (and do not) want to leave university ministry at this point in my life. These elections both happened in February. If I had been elected at either priory, it would have meant an abrupt, painful move from Stanford and, more difficult in the longer term, being out of campus ministry for 3-6 years. I am grateful that I was not elected to either position. I returned to the CC@S in March 2008 after two and a half years in Oregon at the University of Oregon Newman Center and our parish in Portland. My mandate was to help this community in transitioning from Fr. Patrick s to Fr. Nathan s leadership with my three years of prior experience among you. I was thrilled to be back with you, but I knew from my experience in the Order that I would most likely not have a full four-year assignment at Stanford. Fr. Nathan (as well as Fr. Patrick and others) also suspected this to be true. considering I would move either to Maui or Salt Lake City! So the possibility of going back and serving that community as a priest and its pastor is exhilarating. I see God s Providence in this whole series of events. For example, if I had stayed at the University of Oregon and not gone to Portland, I could not have come back here. Like many providential happenings, they have been unexpected and wonderful. Much of who I am as a priest comes from having served you: I have been at Stanford longer than anywhere else as a priest, fully five of my twelve years. I am extremely grateful to you and you will always have a special place in my heart. I am in Salt Lake City as you read this. I am being formally introduced to the community at the Masses this weekend and attending meetings with the staff, other leaders of the Newman Center community, as well as campus administrators and University of Utah officials. I will also be away for about half of May attending planning meetings, interviewing potential employees and the like in Salt Lake and taking some vacation time. I look forward to our last quarter together. Now, like the Seniors and those finishing Master s and Doctoral programs, I am considering my future beyond the Bubble. It makes me grateful for the time I have spent here, sad to be leaving friends and loved ones, and excited about what comes next. I am, Yours sincerely, Via completely unforeseen circumstances (at least to me!), the position in Utah opened this winter and I expressed my desire to be considered for it. I have many happy memories of St. Catherine s. Back in , halfway through my academic preparation for ordination, I did my Residency year there. (Residency is like a yearlong internship for Western Dominicans in formation.) I learned and grew a tremendous amount and many abiding friendships began that year. Toward the end of that year I told my parents that if I ever left the Dominicans which was not something I was seriously

5 Gathering The Catholic Community at Stanford University SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 11, 2010 Second Reading Revelations 1:9-11a,12-13,17-19 The author of Revelation had a vision of seven gold lampstands. Among the lampstands was one like a son of man dressed in a robe, with a gold sash around his chest. Gospel Acclamation Easter Alleluia (M. Haugen) Sing of the Lord s Goodness (Ernest Sands) Gospel John 20:19-31 One of the Twelve, Thomas, was absent when the risen Lord first appeared to the others. Later, when Thomas was with them, Jesus came and said, Bring your hand and put it into my side and believe. Thomas cried, My Lord and my God! Preparation of Gifts For Peace (Huub Oosterhuis) Gloria Mass of Light (D. Haas) First Reading Acts 5:12-16 Through the work of the apostles, many signs and wonders took place among the people. People in great numbers became believers, and many of the sick were cured. Psalm Ps. 118 Let Us Rejoice (M. Haugen) Far too late have I begun to love you; you were there within me, I was outside, and I sought you, seeing blindly just beyond myself; and poured away like water, I took flight from you and I was lost, surrounded by such beauty which is not you. Then you called and cried aloud to me, breaking through the silence of my deafness, Dazzling brightness, you appeared to me, and at once you put to flight my blindness. Drawing deep, I smell your fragrant presence, still I gasp for breath and long for you. Since I tasted you I only thirst and hunger after you. How, with a simple touch, your fire consumes me. Now my heart, aflame and blazing, leaps to you for peace. Sanctus Mass of Light (D. Haas)
