3 The Anglican Diocese of Wellington As a Christian Faith Community we worship, we witness, we teach, we serve, we care Bishop s Office P O Box Greetings Family I have been reflecting this month about the centrality of Jesus to our faith. I was impacted when I sat through three different talks by gifted Anglicans. All talks were inspirational and had great content; they all talked about the parables, teaching and ethics of Jesus. However in each case I can t remember Jesus actually being mentioned by name. It made me reflect on my own life, whether my faith has become a formula based on Jesus but no longer actually connected to Him. As a follower of Jesus I am more convinced than ever that the core of our faith must revolve around Jesus. It has been my pleasure to be involved in a few Confirmation services in this last month. I particularly remember wonderful services at All Saints, Palmerston North, St James, Lower Hutt, St Philip s, Stokes Valley and St Peter s, Pahiatua. It was a great privilege to set these people apart as they commit themselves to following Jesus for life. To pray afresh for each of them that God s Spirit would empower them in emulating the way of Jesus and strengthening their relationship with the living God. Each Confirmation reminds me of my own life commitment to follow Jesus where ever he leads, and to willingly embrace the joy and struggles of that calling. I would encourage us all, as we head into Advent, to reflect on the centrality of Jesus to our lives. As Anglicans it would be great if we were not primarily known for our great church services, our slick programmes, our wonderful Choirs or even our compassionate social services; but for being people of Jesus. What excites me at the moment is the courage shown by the Wanganui Archdeaconry. As a family they have undertaken to do a significant makeover of the Raetihi Vicarage. I even believe that John Rowan had Bishop Mwita Akiri from Tanzania up there helping! I am planning to join the youth of the Diocese in lending a hand on 10 and 11 December. I find these times often the richest times: joining with other followers of Jesus, rolling up our sleeves and getting stuck in to make a tangible difference. Returning the Vicarage to a liveable standard will enable us to place a gifted Missioner in our Northern most Parish. When I talk to Archdeacon Elizabeth Body I am overwhelmed with the stories of God s provision through God s people. A loaf and a fish here and there, and slowly the place is being transformed one small miracle of generosity at a time. Well done Family. 4 Aziza Aziza is living in the Philippines and has the wonderful opportunity to further her education. She is needing approx. $150 a month to pay for accommodation, food and other costs. We, here at St Philips, are attempting to find at least some of the money needed. 8 We are beginning a whole new year and we hope that 2013 brings all that you need. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jamie Scott for her many years as our Children & Families Facilitator. She has done an amazing job and we have really appreciated all that she has done. She has now moved on to a full time job now her children are older and so will no longer be in this position. She will continue to be involved with the Youth Group. Her report for the AGM will be in the AGM booklet which will be available in the next week. Our groups are all beginning again for the year. Sonday Club started back on the 27 January. R.I.O.H.C are meeting on the 26 January to discuss what is happening for them. Totz n Tune begins on 14 February and Youth Group starts on 15 February. Easter comes early this year and is not attached to the first school holidays but is a long weekend. That is a blast from the past as that is how it always was when we had a 3 term year. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions or offers of help for any of the groups - we would be very appreciative of this. Heather and Joy will be on board for Totz n Tune but it would be lovely to have some younger people to take the sessions. Thank you Builder looking for work. I am a trade qualified and now also a Licensed Building Practitioner. I am available for any type of building work from maintenance and renovations through to new houses, fences, decks - basically anything that can happen on a house or a property. 9 Confirmations & Renewals Last year we had some of our young people confirm and renew their faith. As part of the preparation they wrote their own Creeds or Affirmations of Faith. I thought I would share them with you over the next few magazines I believe in God, who is Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit, who work together to create, and be light to the world. God redeems us through Jesus death and resurrection. I believe God is Jesus Dad. He created everything and rests us in peace. God doesn t control us like a puppet He lets us be free to make up our own minds. Jesus never sinned, and He made the tough choices. Jesus was crucified on the cross and rose again. The Holy Spirit, with Jesus and God, helps us to do the right things. The Holy Spirit helps us in time of need. They look heaps better than this come and check them out. $5 each And lots of space to write on Please support us in getting these sold The first wedding of the year was celebrated here on 19 January between Millie Su and Peter Webb. They were well supported by friends and family. The day went really well but it was a big decision as to where to go on honeymoon we will catch up on that by the next magazine. Milly looked absolutely stunning and wee Alex was so cute. And our first funeral of the year was for Keith Fredric, who died peacefully at Stokeswood on Monday, 21 January. The Church was full of his family & friends to farewell him on 25 January. Keith did a lot of work and maintenance at St Philips over the years. Happy Birthday to all those having birthdays in January and February especially to Hannah, Jasmine, Robin, Heather, Jamie, Keaton, Ronan and anyone else celebrating birthdays at this time Happy 21 st Birthday to Megan Render Good wishes to all those starting back at school for 2013 especially those beginning new schools this year
