Living Waters Where the river flows, life abounds Ezekiel

Clergy Conference - Living Waters Where the river flows, life abounds (Ezekiel 47.9) The conference is offered as a time of blessing for the clergy of the diocese to be personally refreshed and renewed by the living waters as disciples of Christ. Led by Bishop Steven and with contributions from Loretta Mingella, Bishop Angaelos and Gordon Mursell, the retired Bishop of Stafford, we will share a time of creativity, participation, play, imagination and conversation. We will engage with our emerging shared vision as a diocese of what it means to be a Christ-like church. First and foremost as disciples of Jesus, the rhythm of being Contemplative, Compassionate and Courageous will offer us a lens, framework and practice for us individually and corporately to explore the call to, and lived experience of, Christ-like life and action. Dates: Monday 30 April Thursday 3 May Venue: Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, DE55 1AU Cost: 120 (CMD grants cannot be used as this is already a heavily subsidised price. However, cost should not be a barrier to participation please contact Andrew Anderson-Gear, Director of Mission) Booking forms will be available on the diocesan website and sent by nearer the conference date. 3

Gender and sexuality: interpreting the New Testament in the light of ancient culture Speaker: Prof Teresa Morgan, Professor of Graeco-Roman History, Oriel College, Oxford In the cultural melting pot of the ancient world, gender and sexuality were a matter of considerable debate. Acknowledging that there is no single, incontestable reading of the New Testament s treatment of sexuality or gender, we will explore the complex picture of gender and sexuality in Greek, Roman, Hellenistic and Jewish culture. We will ask how, in the light of the context, we can interpret the New Testament today, especially in St Paul s context, theology and ecclesiology. Revd Dr Teresa Morgan is Professor of Graeco-Roman history, Nancy Bissell Turpin Fellow and Tutor in Ancient History at Oriel College, Oxford. She is also the Chair of the Board of the Faculty of Classics. Among her particular interests are theoretical approaches to the writing of history, the history of sex, sexuality and gender, the history of religions, papyrology and all forms of social history. Publications include: Popular Morality in the Early Roman Empire, and Roman Faith and Christian Faith. Date: Wednesday 24 January Time: 9.30am 3.30pm Venue: The Barn, Christ Church, Abingdon, OX14 1PL Cost: 10 (including lunch) 4 To book on this course, please complete the enclosed booking form.

Celebrating the 50 days of Easter Speakers: Canon Angela Tilby and members of Praxis It has been observed that the implications of the resurrection lavishly overflow a one-day container. To engage more richly and more deeply with the message of Easter across fifty days can enable us to know Christ and the power of his resurrection (Philippians 3.10) in new ways. This study day will help us to explore a range of liturgical and other resources that can enable us to engage to celebrate the whole season of Easter. Canon Angela Tilby is an experienced broadcaster and author, a former member of the Liturgical Commission of the Church of England, and until 2016 was CMD Adviser in this diocese and Canon of Christ Church Cathedral. Date: Wednesday 7 February Time: 10am 4pm Venue: Church of Christ the Servant King, High Wycombe, HP12 4TJ Cost: 10 (including lunch) 6 To book on this course, please complete the enclosed booking form.

Imagine Church: Ministry for the Front Line Speaker: Stefan McNally, LICC Imagine Church Programme Director 98% of Christians those not in paid church work spend the majority of their lives as the scattered church, in regular contact with those who are not already Christians. This day will focus on whole-life discipleship and will explore steps you can take as a leader to equip Christians to take seriously Christ s call to discern his presence and follow him in every area of life. Stefan will seek to scope out the big picture of mission, explore your church s role in that story, and discover practical steps that you can take as you develop a ministry with a heart for the front line. London Institute for Contemporary Christianity (LICC) was founded in 1982 and works to empower Christians to make a difference for Christ in their Monday to Saturday lives and to help church leaders to equip their church communities for this. 10 Living Reconciliation Speaker: Revd Dr Phil Groves In a world often defined by differences, Christians are called to be reconciled reconcilers. Inspired by the Indaba process of deep listening and seeking common ground, this day will share experiences of profound reconciliation from around the Anglican Communion, exploring the promise of Living Reconciliation and being an example to the world about how to live and love even those with whom we disagree. C.S.Lewis Much courage is needed in the leading of a church. This day will look at different types of courage (physical, moral, emotional, spiritual and relational) and how they relate to fear, recklessness, wisdom and prudence. We ll also explore how to grow in courage and how to avoid some of the unhelpful stereotypes. This is the first in a series of three days exploring what it means to be Contemplative, Compassionate and Courageous as leaders. The Revd James Lawrence is Leadership Principal at CPAS, author of numerous books and courses (including Growing Leaders and PCC Tonight), and admits to struggling with courage in his own leadership. 12 Day ReTREAT Mindfulness and Christian Spirituality Speaker: Revd Tim Stead Mindfulness has become very popular these days as a means of managing stress, coping with depression and engaging with life more creatively. The simple but varied meditation practices have a lot in common with some of the great contemplative traditions but have also benefited from the input of contemporary science. This day will be a day of practice, reflection and discussion about how mindfulness can not only support stress management and self-care (two things clergy can be notoriously bad at) but also, if we choose, support our spiritual lives. All the meditations will be guided by the retreat leader and each part of the day will be carefully guided, whether practising, reflecting or discussing. Participants are invited to come with an open mind, ready to explore the enormous possibilities which mindfulness may have to contribute to Christian spirituality. Revd Tim Stead is the Vicar of Headington Quarry, Oxford. He is an accredited mindfulness teacher and author of Mindfulness and Christian Spirituality. Date: Time: Venue: Cost: Tuesday 3 July 10am 4pm The Chapter House, Princes Risborough HP27 9AW 10 (including lunch) 12 To book on this course, please complete the enclosed booking form.

A Bridge Builders Workshop: Handling Power in Leadership Speaker: Liz Griffiths, Director of Training, Bridge Builders The Beatitudes picture the kingdom of God as a realm where normal human assumptions are turned upside down and the powerless are blessed. Yet churches are as vulnerable to power struggles as any other part of society. Leaders can feel oppressed by dominant families, in-groups or individuals. Church members can be driven to despair by domineering leaders. But what if we see power differently? What if no one is powerless, and everyone can choose how to use what power they have, for good or evil? This way of understanding power brings both liberty and responsibility. For leaders, it means seeing power as a gift and using it wisely. This workshop offers theological principles and frameworks for good practice to encourage and equip all involved in church leadership. Bridge Builders works towards transforming church culture those ways of thinking and acting that are part of the fabric of church life, and often go unexamined. Liz Griffiths is Director of Training for Bridge Builders and an Anglican Priest. Date: Tuesday 10 July Time: 10am 4pm Venue: Church House Oxford, OX5 1GF Cost: 25 To book on this course, please complete the enclosed booking form. Bookings for this course close on Wednesday 4 April

The Contemplative Minister Speaker: Revd Ian Cowley If you meet George Herbert on the road, kill him! In his provocatively titled book, Justin Lewis-Anthony asks why many contemporary clergy are under such pressure and some are experiencing burn out. Do we need to radically rethink our model of ministry? In this day of reflection, Ian will help us explore how we can recapture the contemplative heart of ministry. Revd Ian Cowley is the author of The Contemplative Minister: Learning to lead from the still centre. He has developed the themes in his book in a series of CMD days for clergy in Salisbury Diocese over many years. Before his retirement in 2016, Ian was Co-ordinator for Vocations and Spirituality for Salisbury Diocese for eight years, and has experience of parish ministry in Ely Diocese and in South Africa prior to that. Date: Wednesday 19 September Time: 10am 4pm Venue: Church House Oxford, OX5 1GF Cost: 10 (including lunch) To book on this course, please complete the enclosed booking form. 14

Tell out my Soul: Singing to lift the heart Speaker: Liam Cartwright ReTREAT Day This is a practical day for all (experts and newbies) to experience the sense of enjoyment and release of stress and tension that come from singing with others. The ability to read music is not necessary for you to enjoy this day. During the day we ll sing a variety of styles of music. Liam Cartwright is an organist, choral conductor, worship leader and educator based in Oxford. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London, and is currently Director of Music at All Saints Parish Church, High Wycombe. Alongside his musical activities, Liam serves as a member of the organising committee of On Fire Mission and as Chairman of Pelagos Spirituality and Retreat Centre. Date: Thursday 27 September Time: 10am 4pm Venue: Bishop Edward King Chapel, Ripon College, Cuddesdon, OX44 9EX Cost: 10 (including lunch) To book on this day, please complete the enclosed booking form. 15

Hearing Confession Across the Christian centuries people have found benefit and grace in having their confession heard and the assurance of their sins being forgiven. As the church reflects further on discipleship this day will offer the opportunity to reconsider the place of confession in the church s ministry today. The aims of this day are to: explore the theology and history of confession in the Church of England learn of current liturgical provision examine issues relating to confidentiality and safeguarding consider the pastoral and practical issues involved in hearing confessions. The day will be led by a team of people with expertise in this area including Phillip Tovey, who will cover liturgical aspects of hearing confession, Rupert Bursell, former Chancellor of the diocese, who will cover legal aspects, John Nixson, Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser, and clergy experienced in hearing confessions. Date: Wednesday 3 October Time: 10am 4pm Venue: Radley Church Room, St James the Great Church, Radley, OX14 2JN Cost: 10 (including lunch) To book on this day, please complete the enclosed booking form. 16

Compassionate Leadership Speaker: Paula Vennells In a recent edition of Psychology Today it was noted that More than ever, we need empathetic and compassionate leaders. Recent studies have shown that contrary to some conventional wisdom, empathetic and compassionate leaders are strong and courageous; they promote trust and collaboration; promote wellbeing in others; and at the same time, they produce positive results. This day will enable us to develop our thinking about how compassionate leadership can be both expressed and experienced. Our speaker, the Reverend Paula Vennells, brings her extensive experience of leadership in a number of major organisations to help us reflect on how compassionate leadership can be developed in this diocese. The Reverend Paula Vennells has been the Chief Executive at Post Office Limited since Since 2005 she has been a Self Supporting Minister in the Diocese of Saint Albans. Date: Tuesday 16 October Time: 10am 4pm Venue: St Aldates Parish Centre, Oxford OX1 1BP Cost: 10 (including lunch) To book on this day, please complete the enclosed booking form. 17

Becoming a spiritual leader Speaker: Revd Patrick Whitworth A day spent considering aspects of Christian leadership, especially around the life of St Peter. How might his experiences speak to us today? What qualities does a leader need? What is the place of character, experience, skill and understanding in Christian leadership? What can we learn from the great leaders of the Bible, from their successes and failures? Patrick Whitworth was ordained in 1976 and has had experience of church leadership and mission in city centre, suburban, deprived urban areas and rural village communities. He served two curacies at St Michael le Belfry, York and Holy Trinity, Brompton where he was Director of Training for four years. He was then Vicar of an Urban Priority Parish in south-east London, Christ Church, Gipsy Hill, where he saw considerable growth and planted a neighbourhood church in the parish. From there he went to All Saints, Bath Weston with North Stoke and Langridge until his retirement in July Date: Wednesday 24 October Time: 10am 4pm Venue: Church House Oxford, OX5 1GF Cost: 10 (including lunch) To book on this course, please complete the enclosed booking form. 18

Study Days with Bishop Steven After a year of exploring and reflecting together on the Beatitudes, Bishop Steven invites all clergy and LLMs within the diocese to join him to reflect together for a day conference on the renewal of catechesis in the life of the Church. Catechesis is the ancient and contemporary discipline of forming, making and sending disciples in the life of the Church. The deep renewal of catechesis is one of the most urgent tasks for the life of the Church of England in the next decade as we seek to grow a more Christ-like Church. Please reserve one of these dates in your diary now and plan to participate in whichever date and venue is convenient. More details of the days will be available nearer the time. Bishop Steven has been working in the area of catechesis for over 30 years. He is a co-author of Emmaus: the Way of Faith, the Pilgrim resources and the new Pilgrim Catechism to be published in October. Dates and Venues: Wednesday 7 November, Greyfriars Church, Reading, RG1 1EH Thursday 15 November, Christ the Cornerstone, Milton Keynes, MK9 2ES Thursday 22 November, St Aldates Parish Centre, Oxford, OX1 1BP Saturday 24 November, St Aldates Parish Centre, Oxford, OX1 1BP Wednesday 28 November, Christ Church, Flackwell Heath, HP10 9AA Time: 10am to 4pm Links to book via Eventbrite will be on the diocesan website nearer the dates. 19

New Posts Consultation Are you a Stipendiary or House for Duty Minister and have you been in post for 6 12 months? Would you value the opportunity to spend 48 hours reflecting on the journey so far and on what the vision and plans might be for the next few years? This consultation runs twice annually, in partnership with other southern dioceses and is spent mostly in small peer groups, facilitated by an experienced consultant. Please speak to your Parish Development Adviser if you would be interested in attending a New Posts Consultation. Renaissance Ministry Programme This programme is ideal if you have been in stipendiary parochial ministry for a number of years and are beginning to think about how you want to shape your ministry for the next phase. There are two mandatory residential sessions at Sarum College, led by Keith Lamdin, Olivia Graham (Archdeacon of Berkshire) and Paul Bryer (Archdeacon of Guildford). The cost is 495, including accommodation, meals and refreshments and this can be covered by using your CMD grant for two years. Please speak to your PDA if you would be interested in attending the Renaissance Ministry Programme. 20

Pre-retirement Ending well is just as important as beginning well, both for you and for those around you, so we hope that clergy for whom retirement is within the next five years will attend a pre-retirement course. As with many other transitions in ministry, retirement brings with it both joys and challenges. It s important to prepare to engage with the changes ahead and to explore ways in which God might call us to be his followers in a different context. There are many practical considerations which will be new, such as pensions and housing, and there will also be things to address emotionally and spiritually. The diocese and the CMD team would like to support clergy as they prepare for this transition, and all stipendiary clergy over the age of 62 will receive an invitation to attend the next course. If you would especially like to attend before then, please contact david.heywood@oxford.anglican.org. 21

22 Sabbaticals Caring for yourself and investing in your own development and journey of discipleship is crucial to all in licensed ministry. In line with the biblical concept of Sabbath, all licensed ministers who are also office holders (lay and ordained, stipendiary and self supporting) in the Oxford Diocese are encouraged to consider taking a three month sabbatical every 10 years. Sabbaticals usually include three elements: a course of study, learning or development, a retreat and a holiday. If you re considering applying for a sabbatical, start planning well in advance (usually at least a year), and contact your Area Sabbatical Adviser (details in the sabbatical policy) to discuss your plans. Dates for sabbaticals need to be agreed with other clergy in your team, the Area Dean and the Bishop. All applications for a sabbatical should be received by the Sabbatical Committee by 30 June for a sabbatical in the following year. Sabbatical applications are unlikely to be agreed if you are an ordained minister within the first two years in a new post, you are a training incumbent for a curate in their diaconal year, or you are supervising an LLM in their first year of being licensed. The full policy for sabbaticals and study leave can be downloaded from the diocesan website: www. oxford.anglican.org/mission-ministry/training-forministry/cmd/sabbaticals-study-leave/
