In our service we gather before our almighty and saving God to offer Him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God s holy and powerful Word and celebrate His life-giving Sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home with Him. YOUR PARTICIPATION IS ENCOURAGED To participate in this service, just follow along in this service folder. Lutheran worship is specifically designed to include the participation of the assembly. We are not here to be an audience, we are here to speak and sing the Word of God to each other. Parts marked P are spoken by the pastor, and parts marked C are spoken/sung by the congregation. A NOTE ON COMMUNION Bethany practices close communion. Close communion is the biblical practice of admitting to communion only members in good standing of our congregation and those who are completely united with the congregation in faith and understanding. Close communion protects those who do not understand the danger of communing without selfexamination or without recognizing the presence of the Lord s body and blood with the bread and wine, and preserves the intimate unity expressed by communing with one another. Therefore, we invite all members in good standing of an Evangelical Lutheran Synod or Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod congregation to join in Holy Communion with us, and we ask that all others please refrain and speak to one of our pastors for more information or if you are interested in joining our church. COLLECT: P: Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth the right hand of Your majesty, to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. THE WORD OF GOD FIRST LESSON Romans 3:19-28(ESV) Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in His sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and Prophets bear witness to it- 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God s righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show His righteousness at the present time, so that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 96 6

How is it that You say, You will become free? 34 Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. If you are a guest with us today, please do not feel obligated to participate. please stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray to our dear Father in heaven as His dear children, begging Him to hear us in His mercy and grant to us all things needful and profitable for our salvation: P: Gracious God, we give You thanks for Your faithfulness in raising up voices in every age and generation to recall Your people to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. C: Remembering blessed Martin Luther and those who contended with Him for the sake of the Kingdom, we ask You to raise up in our own time faithful pastors and church workers, P: People who will preach Jesus Christ crucified and risen, for the edification of Your people and for the sake of those not yet of the faith. C: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. 9

10 P: Almighty Father, You did not abandon us to sin and its death but delivered up Your own Son to the cross in order to redeem a lost and condemned people. C: Keep this Gospel as the center of the Church s proclamation to the world, P: And keep us from abandoning this confession, especially in time of persecution and threat. C: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. P: Merciful God, You continually look upon us in our weakness and infirmity and grant grace sufficient for our need. C: Deliver the sick from their afflictions, relieve the suffering, give comfort to those who mourn and give peace to those in their hour of death. P: [We especially remember before You and all who have asked for our prayers.] May Your strength be made perfect in their weakness, Your patience sustain them in their troubles, and Your peace console them until You deliver them with perfect healing. 11 P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; and now we praise You that You sent us Your onlybegotten Son and that in Him, being found in fashion as a Man, you manifested the fullness of Your glory. 12 WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying; Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI (LAMB OF GOD) be seated DISTRIBUTION (visitors, please note our communion practice on page 2) CHOIR We All Believe in One True God ELH 38 The Augsburg Confession, Article XXIV (ELH pg. 16) says, Falsely are our churches accused of abolishing the Mass, for the Mass is retained by us and celebrated with the highest reverence. All the usual ceremonies are also preserved, except that the parts sung in Latin are interspersed here and there with German hymns, which have been added to teach the people. For ceremonies are needed for this reason alone: that the unlearned be taught. We All Believe in One True God was written by Martin Luther precisely for that purpose. It is a paraphrase of the Nicene Creed and the melody is based on a much older melody that the Latin Credo (or creed) would have been sung to. Hymn verses the choir is singing are as follows: 1. We all believe in one true God, Who created earth and heaven, The Father, who to us in love Hath the right of children given. He both soul and body feedeth, All we need He doth provide us. He through snares and perils leadeth, Watching that no harm betide us. He careth for us day and night; All things are governed by His might. 12

13 2. We all believe in Jesus Christ, His own Son, our Lord, possessing An equal Godhead, throne, and might, Source of ev ry grace and blessing. Born of Mary, virgin mother, By the power of the Spirit, Made true man, our elder Brother, That the lost might life inherit, Was crucified for sinful men And raised by God to life again. 3. We all confess the Holy Ghost, Who sweet grace and comfort giveth And with the Father and the Son In eternal glory liveth, Who the Church, His own creation, Keeps in unity of spirit; Here forgiveness and salvation Daily come through Jesus merit. All flesh shall rise, and we shall be In bliss with God eternally. DISTRIBUTION HYMN If Thy Beloved Son, O God 375 NUNC DIMITTIS P: Let us pray: We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through these salutary gifts, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through them in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. 13

14 CHOIR If God Had Not Been On Our Side ELH 396 This hymn is Martin Luther s paraphrase of Psalm 124. It pictures the dangers that beset the Christian Church and praises God who has delivered it. Three enemies threaten us: the devil, the world, and our own flesh. Let us sing this hymn to the glory of Christ, who unceasingly defends us against such enemies. Hymn verses the choir is singing are as follows: 1. If God had not been on our side And had not come to aid us, The foes with all their pow r and pride Would surely have dismayed us, For we, His flock, would have to fear The threat of men both far and near Who rise in might against us. 2. Their furious wrath, did God permit, Would surely have consumed us And as a deep and yawning pit With life and limb entombed us. Like men o er whom dark waters roll Their wrath would have engulfed our soul And, like a flood, o erwhelmed us. 3. Blest be the Lord, who foiled their threat That they could not devour us; Our souls, like birds, escaped their net; They could not overpow r us. The snare is broken, we are free! Last Sunday 118 of God s people came to worship and hear His holy Word. 53 attended Sunday School and Adult Bible Class. ANNOUNCEMENTS REFORMATION CELEBRATION SERVICE Sunday, 10/29, 11:00am Today we mark the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, and remember Martin Luther who boldly proclaimed the truth of God s Word. Our school theme, The Word of the Lord Endures Forever, is connected to this historic event and to celebrate our students will participate in a special 11:00am Reformation Service. All are invited! ALL-SAINTS DAY OBSERVANCE Sunday, 11/5 On Sunday, November 5 th, Bethany will observe the Festival of All-Saints, when we honor all Bethany members/loved ones who have joined the church triumphant in heaven since the last All-Saints Day. LMSG, a partnership of ELS & WELS vetrans, is working to grow awareness of and bring Christian support to military members and their families in our congregations and beyond.
