Fun and Games Winnie s Newsletter A take-home paper for kids! Lalana and other Thai kids enjoy soccer, volleyball, basketball, and other sports. They love to fly kites and play takro. Takro is like volleyball but you can t use your hands to get the ball over the net! Kick-boxing and the martial arts, such as judo, are popular. Kids also like to watch TV. There are many holiday festivals. For National Children s Day, schools are closed and kids go to fairs, amusement parks, and museums. Gin Kow Gin kow is the Thai word for dinner. It means eat rice. Lalana and her family eat rice at almost every meal. Along with the rice, they eat dishes like satay (barbecued pork or chicken with peanut sauce), kang (curry), and pad Thai (pan-fried noodles). Foods are usually spicy. Fruits are plentiful, and there are numerous fast-food restaurants in the cities. THAILAND Lalana Lalana joins several other children on a city bus. They are all dressed in their uniforms white shirts and blue or black shorts or pants (skirts for girls). Soon they get off the bus and walk the rest of the way. The children stop and bow before the statue of Buddha before they enter the school. All public schools are Buddhist, and children are taught to worship images of the Buddha. Thai children go to school for nine years, but fewer than one in three finish high school. Lessons are in Thai, and kids also learn some English. Elephants Elephants are very important to Thai people; in fact, the elephant is Thailand s national symbol. Throughout history, the elephant has worked with people as transportation, heavy lifters, and even fighting in wars. Today, elephants also provide entertainment. They play sports, have races, and play tug-of-war with people. Lalana has even seen some elephants dance, play instruments, and paint! Some cities in Thailand hold a parade of elephants in the month of November.

4 Thai People Need Jesus Wirachai Kowae grew up learning about Buddha, a man who lived long before Jesus. Buddha taught that people could find peace only by separating themselves from the world. But Wirachai felt no peace until he found Jesus and was baptized in the Holy Spirit. Wirachai went to Bible school and then began a church. He trained some members, and they too began churches. When the Assemblies of God was formed in 1973, Wirachai became its first leader. The first U.S. Assemblies of God missionaries came in 1968 to work with the U.S. servicemen who were based in Bangkok. As soldiers were saved, they helped give out gospel literature and held Bible studies and English classes for the Thai people. The base was closed in The serviceman s center became the first Assemblies of God church and the AG headquarters. Over the years, missionaries have used outdoor meetings, television and radio programs, literature, and medical clinics to share the gospel. Thailand s kids really need a message of hope! Many young people take drugs. Many street kids get AIDS and other diseases. A girls home in Chiang Rai helps some girls to start a new life. Bam Rom Yen is a home that helps children whose parents have died of AIDS. The Assemblies of God also helps drug addicts and prisoners find hope in Jesus. New Life Project helps poor families living in slums. BGMC helps lots of kids. You helped pay to translate Sunday School lessons and Missionettes lessons into Thai. But since there are no primroses in Thailand, the Prims girls are called Dolphins! Royal Rangers lessons are also being worked on. Currently, most boys are in Missionettes. BGMC has also helped train children s workers. Teenagers also need to hear about Jesus. The Book of Hope, the gospel written for kids and youth, has been given out in many high schools and at a university. Hundreds of teens learn about God s love at youth camps. Thailand needs lots more churches. A Bible school is training 30 new workers. Churches use cell groups (small group meetings) to help people learn about the Bible and Jesus. They also teach them to witness to others. The Thailand Assemblies of God now has about 80 churches. They want to start more all over Thailand. Pray that God will help them. Let s Pray for our missionaries and their families in Thailand. for new believers. Often their families are angry with them when they accept Jesus. Pray that God will help them witness to their families. for the kids of Thailand, that God would save them and protect them. that God would call more Thai pastors to begin churches by Gospel Publishing House, 1445 N. Winnie the World Skit Winnie the World L ves thailand THAILAND (She enters carrying a picture of an elephant or holding a stuffed elephant while singing her song to the tune of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush. ) Here we go round this great big world, this great big world, this great big world. Here we go round this great big world, telling people bout Jesus. Hi, everyone. Hi, Winnie. What are you doing with that elephant? The country I m going to talk about today loves elephants. In fact, the elephant is the national symbol of the country. What country is that, Winnie? The country is Thailand. Thailand is located just east of India in the middle of Southeast Asia. Oh, yes. I ve heard of Thailand, but I didn t know they loved elephants. The Thai people think that elephants are a symbol of good luck. Asian elephants are very smart and very helpful to the people. You might even see an elephant walking down the crowded streets in the big cities. How do the elephants help the people? The elephants help the people by moving heavy things and carrying heavy items. People ride elephants and have even used them to fight in wars. That s very interesting, Winnie. These elephants must be very smart in order for them to be trained to help the people. Yes, they are. The Thai elephants are also taught to play sports, play games, dance, play musical instruments, and even paint pictures. An elephant painting a picture? I d love to see that. The elephant would have to hold the paint brush in his trunk in order to paint. That s right. It s actually very fun to watch. Lesson 11: THAILAND 257

6 Winnie, isn t Thailand the country where almost everyone is Buddhist? That s right. The people of Thailand follow the teachings of a man named Buddha. They do not believe that Jesus died on the cross for their sins. In fact, all the public schools are Buddhist, and the kids are taught to worship images of the Buddha. It sounds like the kids in Thailand need to be told about Jesus. There are thousands of kids in Thailand who live in the streets. They have no home and nowhere to go. Thousands of kids also live in the dirty slums. These slums are full of all kinds of diseases. What is BGMC doing to help reach the kids? BGMC has helped to translate and print Sunday School lessons and Missionettes lessons. BGMC is also helping to train children s workers and provide them with the equipment they with the equipment they need to teach kids. How many missionaries do we have in Thailand? We have 21 missionaries. These missionaries have feeding programs, orphanages, schools, and medical clinics. They are also helping the kids who have AIDS and other diseases. It s so sad to hear about kids in other countries who are poor and need so much help. I m glad we have missionaries who are willing to go around the world to help people and to tell them about Jesus. God asks all of us to have a heart of compassion for those less fortunate than we are. We are so blessed in America. We need to share what we have with others. I m so glad that the boys and girls of America are willing to share by giving to BGMC. They are giving up some of their time and money so that kids around the world can have a better life, and so they can hear about Jesus. Our missionaries really need BGMC. BGMC gives them all the supplies they need. Millions of kids have heard about Jesus because of BGMC. Thank you, boys and girls, for giving to BGMC. Thank you for coming today, Winnie, and telling us how children in Thailand need to be reached with the gospel. Good-bye. Good-bye, everyone. Whenever you see an elephant, remember to pray for the kids in Thailand who still need to hear about Jesus. Sing with me as I go. (She exits singing her song.) 8 THAILAND Speedy D. Light Skit Click here to open a larger picture of Speedy (Speedy D. Light comes racing from behind stage. Screeching car brakes are heard and up pops Speedy. He has a Spanish accent and talks very fast. He hardly stops for a breath. When he gets too excited, he beeps. His catchy key line is, I am so excited! Beep! Beep! ) Hey, boys and girls, Speedy D. Light here. I travel the world to see how missionaries use BGMC and Speed the Light to help reach the people of the world. When kids give their money to BGMC, they are helping missionaries all over the world by supplying them with all the things they need to reach people for Jesus. Teenagers give to Speed the Light. Speed the Light monies go to purchase vehicles for missionaries to use to tell people about Jesus. Usually those vehicles are cars, vans, jeeps, trucks, and buses. Occasionally bicycles and motorcycles are purchased. Today I m going to tell you about what the missionaries are doing in Thailand. I am so excited! Beep! Beep! I thought I d tell you today what a typical day is like when missionaries work with students from Thailand and go out into the villages telling people about Jesus. This particular day they traveled to a city called Mae Bern Village. Here they sang songs with a guitar. The songs told the people about the God in heaven who has great power over the enemy, Satan. They then told the people about how a snake (Satan) deceived Eve. They then explained that God defeated Satan by sending his Son Jesus to die on the cross for their sins! Many of the students shared their testimonies of how God had saved them. At the end of the service many of the people gave their lives to Jesus! I am so excited! Beep! Beep! Oh, one more thing I should tell you about this day in Thailand. On the way home after talking about defeating the snake Satan, you will never guess what happened. They were riding in their Speed the Light van when they heard a big thump. They got out of the van and found they had run over a great big snake and killed it. Guess what happened next.the students jumped out of the car, took the snake home, and made snake soup for supper! Oh, yuck! That s sounds terrible, but the students really liked it! I am so excited! Beep! Beep! Well, I gotta go! Keep giving to BGMC! There are so many places that need Jesus! (He races off and the sound of squealing tires is heard.) 2008 by Gospel Publishing House, 1445 N. Key Scripture Missions Object Lesson The Lord Is Coming THAILAND 1 Thessalonians 5:2 For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. Materials Needed bullhorn party hat party horn confetti party music (optional) telephone or cell phone box of tissues Scripture taken from the HOLY BIBLE, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION. NIV. 10 Presentation What would you do if Jesus called you today and said, Get ready to go! I am coming tomorrow to take you to Heaven! (Hold up the bullhorn.) Would you get a big bullhorn and run through the streets like Paul Revere and shout, Jesus is coming, Jesus is coming! (Run through the kids and shout, Jesus is coming! several times.) Or would you throw a great big party at your house? (Put on the party hat, blow the party horn, and throw the confetti. If you have background music you could play some party music and start dancing.) Or would you start crying and begging God for forgiveness and call all your unsaved loved ones and tell them they should do the same? (Pull out a lot of tissues and start crying loudly and hold the phone to your ear.) How do you think you would respond if Jesus really did call you? You really do not have to answer this question because it is not going to happen that way. The Bible tells us that one day Jesus will definitely return, but no one knows when. He will not call and let us know the day or the hour. First Thessalonians 5:2 says, For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. Now if a thief were coming to your house, would he call you first? No, he would come unexpectedly. Jesus is no thief, but He will come unexpectedly and quickly. So we must be ready all the time. Until then, you can still do all the things I mentioned. You can let everyone know Jesus is coming soon. (Hold up the bullhorn and shout, Jesus is coming! ) You can throw a praise party every day knowing that Jesus will come again. (Blow the party horn and throw some confetti.) And (hold telephone to your ear) you can be a missionary by calling all your unsaved friends and family members to tell them they should be ready for Jesus to return! True Missions Story THAILAND Listen to God s Voice (Picture 1) (Picture 1) Eed (pronounced like eat ) had lived in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, since she was a little girl. She loved going to the marketplace, with all of its bright colors and so many things to buy! She could buy clothes or trinkets or snacks. One of her favorite snacks was shaved ice, which came in a plastic bag, neatly fastened with a rubber band and with a straw poking out of one corner. The green one was her favorite flavor, although her best friend always said it tasted like sweet toothpaste. But her most favorite snack of all was sausage on a stick. Every afternoon, a street vendor wheeled her cart up to the sidewalk and started barbecuing delicious sausages over charcoal. (Picture 2) One day, Eed approached the street vendor. She could smell fresh sausages being grilled. Already there were some sausages done and ready to take home in a paper bag, but the fresh ones smelled so good. Eed had a few minutes, so she thought she d wait for a fresh one. (Picture 2) While Eed stood there waiting, she felt a voice in her spirit saying, Don t wait. Hurry and buy the sausages now. Eed argued with herself, thinking, But there aren t any fresh ones. The voice in her spirit came again. Don t wait. Click here to open a bonus True Missions Story Lesson 11: THAILAND 263

12 (Picture 3) So Eed selected a couple of the sausages that were already done. The vendor said to her, Don t take those, Eed. Wait for the fresh ones; they re almost done. No, I ll take these, Eed said. The vendor lady replied, Just a minute and these will be just as you like them. But Eed didn t wait. She paid for her sausages and stepped away. (Picture3) Eed had gone no more than three or four steps when BAM! A car smashed into a pole right at the very spot where she had been standing. The vendor s cart was bent, and two of the customers who had been waiting in line were injured and lying on the pavement. Eed phoned the police for help and stayed to pray with the injured. Then she made her way home, shaken and trembling but amazed. God knew what was going to happen. He had warned her. She felt so thankful that she had listened to His voice. If she hadn t, then she would have been the first to be hit. She could have been one of those people lying on the sidewalk, or she could have been killed. But she wasn t. God had protected her.
