3 St. Thomas More Award Thomas Moran (posthumously) Tom Moran, who passed away on June 8, 2015, had a long and distinguished legal career in Central Florida. He mentored many, and he gave selflessly to both the Church and the community at large. Among other things, Tom was President of the Bishop Moore High School Board of Education, finance committee chair for, and otherwise very involved with, Annunciation Parish, advisor to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Queen of the Universe, and spent much time, particularly in his later years, devoted to caring for aging members of the Catholic clergy. In the community and civic arena, Tom was a senior consultant for the Justice and Peace Office and the Apopka Family Learning Center, Treasurer of United Way of Central Florida, and Secretary/Treasurer of the Orlando Urban League. Tom lived by his faith values and incorporated them in both his practice and to benefit the community at large. About the St. Thomas More Award The St. Thomas More Award is presented to a member of the legal profession whose accomplishments in some way represent the principles and ideals of St. Thomas More. The criteria for selection are listed below: Is a practicing Catholic, involved in his or her parish and a ministry of the Church; Displays a commitment to Catholic social teaching as borne out in his/her daily living; Promotes the application of Christian principles to modern problems, especially insofar as they are connected with the law; Promotes the social, intellectual, and spiritual welfare of the people served through his/her discipline; Helps the local Church and persons responsible for its institutions; Encourages all Catholic members of the bar to know and live their faith fully, both in private and in public, by their daily example through word and deed; Offers personal sacrifice for the good of the community SIGN OF THE CROSS GREETING PENITENTIAL ACT In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. History of the Red Mass The Red Mass originated in France in the early 13th century as a service in which God was called upon to help lawyers and judges adhere to truth and justice. The tradition soon spread to England, where, during the reign of King Edward I, the entire Bench and Bar would mark the opening of each Term of Court by attending a Mass together. In those services, the priest-celebrants, as well as the judges of the High Court, wore red robes to signify their willingness to defend the truth inspired by the Holy Spirit, even at the cost of shedding one s blood. Thus, the celebration became popularly known as the Red Mass. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. 18 3

This allows them to live independently with some help to achieve their best lives possible in recovery. The mission of Dave s House is to transform lives and give hope to people with serious mental illness through creating stable homes with support. Its vision is to end the housing crisis for people with serious mental illness. Dave s House was founded in 2008 by Ron and Lin Wilensky and is run by volunteers. To date, Dave s House has developed resources, organized community partnerships and enlisted behavioral healthcare experts to serve 34 residents in seven houses. Advocates say it is one of the area s few options for permanent supportive housing for those with mental illness. It is also being viewed by mental health officials as a potential model for the state. About the St. Martin de Porres Award St. Martin de Porres, patron saint of social justice, devoted his life to the corporal works of mercy through the care of the sick and injured and selfless service to the poor. The St. Martin de Porres Award is given to an organization which demonstrates unbounded and helpful charity offering hope to those in need determined by the following criteria: 4 Promotes understanding and respect; Extends friendship to all; Works and prays for peace 17

5 About St. Thomas More June 22 is the Feast of St. Thomas More, Protector of Lawyers. Thomas More was born into a noble family in London in 1477 and studied law. He enjoyed great fortune with the ascent of Henry VIII, who used him for diplomatic missions, had him knighted in 1521, and made him Lord Chancellor. He came to oppose the king, however, and refused to support him as head of the English Church against the Roman Catholic Church. In 1535, he was accused of treason, imprisoned, and beheaded. A celebrated man of letters, More was the author of Utopia among other works. Beatified in 1886, he was canonized in 1935 by Pope Pius XI. Catholic Lawyers Guild of Central Florida The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Central Florida is a lay Catholic organization whose focus is prayer, study, generosity and evangelization. The group seeks to help members integrate and further the Catholic faith of its members in their chosen profession. Membership is open to Catholic lawyers and law and pre-law students.
