3 Small Group Questions Getting Started 1. Why do you think Mark included this story in his gospel? See 2 Timothy 3:16. Leaders: Read 2 Timothy 3:16 and build enthusiasm in the group by focusing on the training in righteousness part. 2. Have you ever felt marginalized, abandoned, neglected, or ignored, like Bartimaeus? If so, share with the group how God got you through it. Leaders: Because this question may stir up hurtful memories for some, be sure to keep a positive environment by affirming that each member of your group is loved and cared for. Digging Deeper 1. Describe a time when you cried out for God s help. How did you mature spiritually from the experience? 2. Have you ever been indifferent about other people s needs? Leaders: This question encourages self-evaluation and heart search. Some people may admit to being too busy to care. Welcome these confessions and encourage change.

4 3. Describe how these people persevered in prayer and how God responded. Daniel, in Daniel 6:10-11 and 6: Jesus, in Luke 22: Paul, in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9. When was the last time you begged God for something? How did He respond to you? Leaders: Some people may describe an experience when God did not answer according to their expectations. Explain to the group that this is not uncommon, and remind them of the example of Paul. 4. Have you ever felt like God was silent to your cries for help? If so, how did you deal with it? Leaders: Even when God does not answer our prayers right away, he is still listening to us. Remember that between the Old and New Testaments there were 400 years silence (no prophet wrote anything during this time), but all the while God was preparing the birth of the Messiah.

5 5. Share with the group how you responded to Jesus invitation to follow Him. Did you do it immediately or did you take some time to count the cost? Are you still undecided about following Christ? Leaders: Do not look for a right or wrong answer. People who take time to consider the call to salvation are not less spiritual than the ones who accepted Christ right away. God created both analytical and spontaneous personalities. Bringing in Home 1. How would you answer if Jesus asked you today, what do you want me to do for you? Leaders: Write down answers as prayer requests and remember to pray for them at the end of the discussion. Be sure to follow up next week. 2. What can you do this week to show Jesus that you are following him? 6 Can you think of a person in your group that has leadership skills? Or might, if they were given the tools they needed? Can you think of someone who you regularly trust to help lead your group (whether in small or large ways), that always rises to the task? You are the leader of your group, but any one of the people you lead could at any time be ready for the path to leadership they may already be leaders, they may be the type that you can see as leaders, or they may simply show a glimmer of potential to be. But what does that mean, and what do you do? What is your next step with people in your group who given the chance could lead your group when you are on vacation, sick, or at a small group leadership event? Whether leaders, types, or potentials, we believe that no leader should be left behind. Small Groups has put together a series of classes, designed to help potential leaders move forward in their development. It s for leaders. It s foundational. It s Foundations in Leadership! What is Foundations in Leadership? It is a six-week class designed to prepare people to lead a small group. This class goes through everything from the leadership skills and group dynamics to cultivating community and the nitty gritty details of actually managing a group. Now, you may be thinking to yourself, Isn t this the same Foundations in Leadership I ve heard them talk about in the Small Group Scoop and at our Leadership Communities? Let me put it this way. If you were to come up to me and ask me that question, I would answer with a hearty YES! Okay, you got me. I thought I would get a little creative and act like this whole Foundations in Leadership is a brand new thing. But, you saw through it. You re sharp; you re a leader! Now, I ve got a question for you. Do you have leaders, types, or potentials in your group? Have you had the conversation with them about Foundations in Leadership? Maybe now is a good time. Remember, the class is only six weeks long. After that, the two of you can revisit the conversation of small group leadership and see where God leads. Lead well.
