CHRISTMAS EVE P. M. C A N D L E L I G H T C O M M U N I O N S E RV I C E
Merry Christmas... We are so happy you could join us for Christmas Eve at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church! Christmas reminds us that by being Christ s light today, we can brighten the darkness we find in our lives and in the world around us. We pray you find the hope, peace, joy and love of Jesus Christ this Christmas season! Rev. Matthew Ruffner
Preparation for Worship In the Christmas story, God takes the risk of incarnation. The flesh God chooses is not that of a warrior but of a vulnerable baby, a claim that brought me tears of wonderment when I was young I know I m called to share in the risk of incarnation Christmas is a reminder that I m invited to be born again and again in the shape of my Godgiven self, born in all the vulnerability of the Christmas story. -Parker Palmer, The Risk of Incarnation Opening Voluntaries Noel Variations on Angels We Have Heard on High David Lowe Variations on O Come, All Ye Faithful Gaston Dethier Silent Night setting by Virgil Fox Welcome Introit Gaudete arr. Robert J. Batastini Verse text by Joseph S. Cook Gaudete, gaudate! Christus est natus Ex Maria virgine: gaudete! (Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born of the Virgin Mary: rejoice!) Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger; There he lay, the undefiled, to the world a stranger Such a babe in such a place, can he be the Savior? Ask the saved of all the race who have found his favor. Angels sang about his birth; wise men sought and found him; Heaven s star shone brightly forth, glory all around him. Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger; He is still the undefiled, but no more a stranger. Call to Worship/Lighting of the Christ Candle During the Advent season, we light a candle to give thanks for one of the four gifts Jesus brings us: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve to remind us that Jesus is the light of the world. This year s candle lighting liturgy is by Rev. Sarah Are and A Sanctified Art, LLC and is meant to be heard and experienced. *Hymn 133 O Come, All Ye Faithful ADESTE FIDELES Confession and Assurance God in the manger, the journey to this place has been long, and we are weary from traveling. Along the way, we lost sight of hope and peace. Guide our eyes to the star in the sky, and remind us that you are guiding our steps. In this midst of this season, we lost sight of love and joy. Open our ears to hear the angel chorus, and remind us that you have come as love to dwell among us. Give us the wonder and awe to behold the one who draws near. Amen. *Please rise as you are able
Response The People Who Walked in Darkness ISAIAH 9 Refrain: The people who walked in darkness awaken to see a great light. The people who dwelt in the land of the shadowrise to a star shining bright. (Refrain) For God has enlarged the nation, and prospered the fruit of its land. God s people are blest with the harvest of victory, gift from a bountiful hand. (Refrain) The yoke of despair and bondage, the chains of the slave master s rod are shattered and scattered like dust in a windstorm, loosed by the justice of God. (Refrain) For us now a child is given, for all the despised and forlorn. The rule of compassion shall rest on his shoulder. God s own Messiah is born! (Refrain) How vast is our God s dominion! How far truth and mercy extend. The zeal of the Lord will accomplish its purpose: justice shall reign without end. (Refrain) Scripture Luke 2:1-16 Homily Rev. Matthew Ruffner *Hymn 134 Joy to the World ANTIOCH Offering If you are interested in making a Christmas Joy offering, you will find designated envelopes in the pews. Offertory Anthem Walk in the Light Karen Marrolli The Westminster Singers And we shall study war no more. Come, O people, O come and walk in the light of the Lord And we shall walk the paths of peace Come, O people, O come and walk in the light of the Lord The night is far spent; the day is at hand So let us cast off the night So we may wear a Shield of Day Come, O people, O come and walk in the light of the Lord Evermore and evermore
Invitation to the Lord s Table Great Prayer of Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Hear us now, as with one voice we pray as Jesus taught: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Communion of the People We will celebrate communion by coming forward to the front of the sanctuary. You are invited to take a piece of glutenfree bread and dip it in the cup of grape juice as the words, The body of Christ, the blood of Christ, are offered. Music During Communion Hymn 147 (verses 1-3, 6) The First Nowell THE FIRST NOWELL Hymn 121 O Little Town of Bethlehem ST. LOUIS Hymn 123 It Came Upon the Midnight Clear CAROL Prayer of Thanksgiving *Sharing the Light of Christ Lighted candles should be held upright. When passing candlelight from one to another, please lean the unlit candle into the light. When extinguishing your candle, use care not to spill wax on the floor or cushions. Following the benediction, place the extinguished candle in a collection box at the door. *Hymn 122 Silent Night, Holy Night! STILLE NACHT *Benediction Closing Voluntaries WORSHIP LEADERS: Rev. Worship at Five allows families the chance to worship together, wiggles and all. We also offer a separate educational time during the sermon for children ages 3-9.
