2 SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENT OPENING HYMN: #551, For All the Saints INVOCATION L(eader): The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C(ongregation): And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS L: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and Merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. L: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. 2

3 L: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. KYRIE 1 For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. L: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost in sin may be brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ. C: Christ, have mercy. L: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as we await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. L: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you. C: Amen. L: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise. 1 The word Kyrie is a Greek word from the phrase Kyrie eleison which means, Lord, have mercy! This is the most heartfelt cry of a believer to his Lord. It is not a cry for forgiveness, but a cry for mercy that our Lord and King hear us and help us in our necessities and trouble. Christians have been praying the Kyrie at Sunday worship for more than 1700 years (that s why its name is Greek, the language most commonly spoken at the time). This morning, may it also be our heartfelt cry to our Lord and King. 3

THE WORD OF GOD THE CHILDREN S SERMON THE FIRST LESSON: DANIEL 12:1-3 1 "At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people everyone whose name is found written in the book will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. 5

6 I Am the Bread of Life by Suzanne Toolan Choir 1. I am the Bread of life. You who come to me shall not hunger; and who believe in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father beckons. Refrain And I will raise you up on the last day. 2. The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world, and if you eat of this bread, you shall live forever. 3. Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink of his blood, you shall not have life within you. 4. I am the Resurrection, I am the life. If you believe in me, even though you die, you shall live forever. 5. Yes, Lord. I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who has come into the world. THE SECOND LESSON: HEBREWS 10: Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. 13 Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, 14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. 15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: 16 "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds. " 17 Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." 18 And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin. 6

7 GOSPEL PROCESSION: 2 Choir will sing the first refrain and the verses. The congregation is invited to sing refrains thereafter. 1. Multitudes, clothed in white robes, From ev ry nation and tongue, Stood before God and the Lamb at the marriage feast of the Lamb. 2. They ll neither hunger nor thirst, Death, sorrow, pain vanquished now, God wipes all tears from their eyes By the marriage feast of the Lamb. Refrain THE GOSPEL LESSON: MATTHEW 25: "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 2 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. (John 1:14). When the Gospel is read in our service, we stand for the works and words of Jesus. Ancient Church practice calls for the Gospel to be read from the midst of the congregation, to remind us that Christ lived among us and we still are gathered round to hear him. Our Gospel Book shows the great respect we have for the Bible as the Word of God. 7

Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.' 10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!' 12 "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.' 13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. 3. Blessing and honor, they cry, Unto the Lamb that was slain, Redeeming us with his blood In the marriage feast of the Lamb. 4. 10 THE SERMON: Be Prepared for the Wedding Feast Matthew 25:1-13 THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THANKSGIVING THE OFFERING: The members of Faith Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord's work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. 10

12 THE SACRAMENT Faith Lutheran Church practices close communion. We ask that only members partake of the Sacrament. L: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. L: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. L: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He protects and preserves his Church in every age and gives us confidence to lift up our heads and watch for Jesus with joy. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory forever and ever. 12

13 THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION: L: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. C: Amen. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. 13

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. THE CLOSING HYMN: #727, There Is a Higher Throne Printed on the next page The flowers at the altar today were given by the Higgs family in memory of their father Wally Higgs. The white carnations at the font today were given in memory of loved ones who have gone to glory, the Saints triumphant. We rejoice in their baptism to new life, as the Bible says, We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 14

18 Announcements Welcome to our guests and visitors! We are glad that you are here, and hope that you will join us again soon. Our FaithBuilders class is for people interested in becoming members of Faith, or for people just looking to build their faith through the study of the basic teachings of the Bible. Our classes are on Sunday at 9:15am and repeat on Tuesday at 7:00pm. If you would like to attend, contact Pastor Schroeder. Childcare is provided. Everyone is welcome. Wednesday at Faith: Please join us. 6:00pm Confirmation Room 4 7:00pm Choir Balcony Youth Group Room 1 (4 th 7 th grade) Choir: You don t need any experience, just a willingness to lift your voice in song. We meet on Wednesdays at 7:00PM in the balcony of the church. Practice lasts no longer than one hour. Thanksgiving Bonfire: We will be having our traditional Thanksgiving bonfire on Wednesday, November 25th at 6:00 PM. Join us for dinner and devotion around the fire. There is a signup sheet for those who will attend. We do not have a church service on Thanksgiving Day. Spring College Course at Faith in Sharpsburg: Foundations, a partnership with Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, WI, will be offering a spring college class here at Faith starting on January 23, The course offered this spring is BIO120 Life Science. This course is transferrable to most universities and colleges. This class is open to high school juniors and seniors, college students, nontraditional students and those needing continuing education. For more information, please contact Jenny Schroeder or visit the Foundation s website at Advent Dinners and Devotion: Beginning on December 2 nd, we will be having Wednesday night dinners and devotion to celebrate the Advent season. The dinners begin at 6:00pm and devotion around 6:45pm. There will be a sign up sheets in the gathering area for those who wish to attend and to bring food.
