How to Explain My Faith Lesson 1 Be God s Child TM Unit Summary Jesus final command before leaving earth was to Go and Make Disciples! For kids to be disciplemakers, they need to know how to explain their faith to their friends. During this unit, your students will discover the joy of sharing their faith with others. As they learn a simple Gospel message, Good News for Kids, they will explore each element that Jesus told His followers to take to people everywhere (Matthew 28:18-20). During each lesson, children will unpack Biblical principles that explain how to communicate their faith to others. They will discover how to prepare to share, how to be wise with words and actions, and how to develop the courage to share their faith with people who desperately need the Gospel. Lesson Summary Before children can effectively share their faith, they need to know the Gospel themselves. What better way to make sure your students know the Gospel than to make sure they are saved? This lesson will both explain the Good News of Jesus as well as provide your kids an opportunity to accept Christ as their own Savior and Friend if they have not yet done so. Only then can they truly be ready to invite others to do the same. Paul s Power Principle: Jesus died to forgive your sins and rose to give you new life! Know Disciple Targets In this lesson, your children will... The Good News is about faith, people, and Jesus. Feel Amazed that God forgives them and gives them new life. Do Trust Jesus as their personal Savior.

Karl Bastian / Kidology.org Welcome! Lost Sheep As the children arrive, tell them that there is a lost sheep somewhere in the room that needs to be found and whoever finds it should bring it to you. Option 1: (basic) Find a small toy sheep or print out a picture of a sheep and hide it very well in the room. Once it is found, however, the game will be over. Option 2: (allows for more play) Print and laminate several small sheep (or buy a bag of toy sheep) and hide them throughout the room and allow many children to find them and bring them up for a small prize when they are discovered. Option 3: (the most fun) Have one leader hide the sheep on his person, perhaps under a hat or in a shirt pocket, and periodically give hints as he moves around the room such as it s on this side of the room. His hints can eventually contradict each other, giving away that the hidden sheep is on the move. When the leader introduces the topic of the day, say something like, You did a great job finding the lost lamb/sheep. The Bible says that we all are like lost sheep who have gone astray and need to be found. Jesus is like the shepherd who is willing to leave all the other sheep to come find us. I m sure glad He found me! Perhaps today, He is going to find some of you, too! Because TODAY I m going to give each of you a chance to ask Jesus to be your Savior, if He isn t already.

Let s Meet-n-Greet! Have kids turn and greet two people they don t know. Ask their names and what s the best news they have received recently. Leaders, be sure to stop whatever you are doing to move through the audience and greet the children, especially those you do not recognize. Announce any birthdays for the week. (See the How to Use DiscipleTown guide for quick and easy ways to acknowledge visitors and birthdays.) Let s Worship! As you open in worship, emphasize that when we become Christians, we become brand-new creations. The Bible says the old is gone, the new is come (2 Corinthians 5:17) and that we become God s children (John 1:12). Recommended Song: A Brand New Me, from God s Kids Worship Classic Worship FALL, Disc 1, available at Kidology.org Puppet Intro Leader & puppet introduce today s lesson. You will find a scripted version of this intro at the end of the lesson. Puppet* is excited because he has been selected for an interview in the local paper. They want him to share the best good news he has ever experienced. He can t decide between when he found his missing autographed baseball or when he won the pet turtle race at school. Leader asks if he is sure those are the two best good news experiences he has ever had. Puppet thinks and then remembers the time he got to go up in a hot air balloon and another time it snowed for two weeks and school closed ( That was good news! ) Leader asks, Are you sure that s the best good news you ve ever experienced? Puppet answers, That s the Gospel truth! Leader says, Interesting you say that do you know what Gospel means? Puppet says, Um, not sure. The really really true truth? Leader laughs and says, No, Gospel means good news. Puppet says, Oh, then yes! That s what I meant to say! Leader says, Well, I don t know about you, but for me, the best good news I ve ever experienced is the Gospel. Puppet hangs his head. Oh just go and make me feel bad. I forgot about that! I guess getting saved from eternal torment for my sins is a little bit better than getting outta school for a few days, huh? Leader laughs and says, Just a little! Puppet says, Wow, what a great opportunity! I can use this interview to tell everyone about Jesus, can t I? But I hope I can explain it well. Explaining my faith is kinda hard. I mean, I know I m saved and all, but explaining it, well, that s another story. Leader says, Well, I ve got some more good news for ya. Listen up, because we are going to learn about how to explain our faith. Soon you ll be able to tell everyone you know how they, too, can say the Gospel is the best thing that ever happened to them! *PUPPET: Develop a puppet character to use regularly. The children will get to know the personality and enjoy these regular visits. Dee, Cy, and Paul puppets are available at DiscipleLand.com

Let s Play! Funniest Good News/Bad News Headlines Supplies: four Sunday papers (can be purchased on Saturday night, or ask four families to bring theirs in), scissors, tape, four non-white poster boards Divide your entire group into four teams and give each team an entire Sunday paper. (If you have an especially large group, you may need to bring two to three teams up on stage to compete during worship.) Assign leaders to each team and give them scissors. The children are to look through the paper and try to come up with two funny headlines using the words they find in large print one Good News headline and one Bad News headline. They may not use headlines that already exist in the paper, but should make up their own using words they find in headlines. Groups should paste the Good News headline on one side of the board and Bad News Headline on the other. Let each group show their posters and share their news, then vote by applause to determine a winning team. The Point: You may want to prepare your own poster board with a headline such as All Have Sinned on one side and Jesus Died to Save Mankind on the other, or whatever you can come up with using newspaper words. The Bad News is that we all are sinners and fall short of God s standard (turn your poster around), but the Good News is that Jesus came and died for our sins, and through Him God offers salvation! Connect with Your Kids Your testimony of how YOU came to Jesus is more powerful than any static detached Gospel presentation. Share with the kids how Christ found you. Consider taking a stool into the middle of the kids and inviting them to pull their chairs in close as you share your personal story. Even if you have told it before, it is a story worth telling again and again. Be sensitive to keep details child-appropriate, but be honest about your need for salvation and how your life was before Christ. Tell how you understood the Gospel, even if your initial understanding was incomplete or faulty, and how accepting Christ changed your life. Allow your voice and inflection to reflect those different stages to bring your story to life for the kids. During the hard times speak softly and slowly, and after you got saved, be excited! Stand up. Let them see your joy and enthusiasm at being saved!

DiscipleTown Visitor Ryan the Reporter* Ryan is dressed in a trench coat and hat, with a small notepad, a pocket full of pens, glasses, and a voice recorder. He rushes into the room with a look of shock and surprise. He madly looks for a place to lean against to write something down. He finds a child s head to rest on and begins writing furiously. Ryan the Reporter: [Blurts out phrases such as it was 11 a.m. on Sunday morning ; unbelievable sight in downtown [your city] ; never seen anything like it before ; flying so low over the city, so quickly! ; nearly crashed into [noted landmark] ; had four legs and what appeared to be a... Pauses as if lost for words. Turns to the kids.] Kids oh, what is that thing? It s on the front of those big flying birds it spins around on their noses, like a giant fan. What is that called? [Help kids come up with propeller, if necessary.] That s it! It had four legs and a propeller. It was the most amazing thing I ever saw! I just had to write about it. Leader: Um what did you see? Ryan: Oh I guess I should write that down, too. Are you saying you have never seen one before either? Leader: Seen what? Ryan: You know a four-legged airplane? Leader: Are you sure? That sounds odd! Ryan: Hey, I write like I see it [ma am/sir] and that is what I saw! Leader: Well that sounds compelling. I would really like to see a four-legged airplane do you have a picture? Ryan: What a genius idea a picture, of course! Then everyone would believe me! I ll be right back! [Exits.] Leader: You know boys and girls, the same way that reporters write about what they see/experience, Christians tell others what they have seen/experienced with God. Telling our very own God story is the best way to share God with others! Sometimes as Christians we think it s our job to convince people that Jesus is real but that s actually the Holy Spirit s job. Jesus said only that we are to be His witnesses. That means we are to be like reporters, telling what we have seen and heard and experienced. We leave the rest up to Him! *CHARACTERS: These are suggested characters and names. Please feel free to change or adjust according to the actors and props you have available.

EXPLORE SCRIPTURE Seize on the children s interest and direct them into God s Word. Let s Search! Bible Dash Supplies: Bibles Ask all kids with Bibles to participate, or invite a few volunteers to come to the front. As children hold Bibles closed with hands on covers, state the Bible reference twice, then on the command SEARCH! have the students race to locate the verse. Once they have a finger on the verse, they can stand and call out, FOUND IT! Have the first child read the verse aloud while you project the verse on a screen via PowerPoint. See suggestions below for comments on each verse. Keep your comments brief and to the point of the lesson. John 1:12 Those who believe have the right to become children of God! John 3:16-17 God so loved the world that He sent Jesus to save it! 2 Corinthians 5:17 When we accept Jesus, we become a brand-new person! John 5:24 When we believe in Jesus instead of being judged, we will live! Jeremiah 29:12-13 If we seek God with all our heart, we will find Him! Paul s Power Principle: Jesus died to forgive your sins and rose to give you new life! Click here to change text Suggested Bible Narrative Jesus and Nicodemus John 3 If possible, reenact this story as a drama with two men acting it out. Turn out the lights as Nicodemus sneaks in to see Jesus under cover of darkness. Otherwise, any method of retelling the story will do. Note: Emphasize that this story includes the famous verse, John 3:16. Let s Learn! Be God s Child Supplies: Bibles, newspapers, Skit: Some newsboys (or girls) enter from both sides of the room selling papers and calling out, Good News! Get your Good News here! Read all about it! Good News! Get your Good News here! Got some Good News! Best news you ever heard! Read all about it! When they get to the center of the stage, the leader can ask what the Good News is and they can answer, acting rather surprised that the leader doesn t know, Why, that Jesus died for us and offers forgiveness, of course! They then pull out a Bible and say, It s all recorded in this Book! They continue down the center aisle and out the back of the room, calling to the children as they hold up their Bibles, Good News! Get your Good News here! Read all about it in this Book! Display or write the word GOSPEL where all the children can see it and ask someone to volunteer to tell everyone what the word means. It means Good News. The word comes from the Old English phrase gōd-spel meaning good news or glad tidings. What s so good about the Good News? Well, let s find out! Our unit this month is about how to explain our faith but before we explain it to anyone else, we should first make

sure that we have learned it for ourselves! That s why our lesson today challenges you to be God s child before you worry about telling others how they can be His child, too. Let s take a look at what s so good about the Good News and why it s a message so wonderful we want to share it with the world! Slide 1: Good News for Kids! The Gospel is the best news you ll ever hear and it s news so good you ll want to share it with others once you ve discovered it! Slide 2: God made you and loves you Read John 3:16. For God so loved the world that He sent His Son so that we can all live forever and ever! Slide 3: God knows everything about you Read Romans 5:12. God knows that all of us have sinned and we all deserve to be punished for our sins against Him. Slide 4: Jesus died to forgive your sins Read 1 Peter 2:24. Even though we sinned and deserve to be punished for our sins, Jesus chose to take our place for us. Slide 5: Jesus rose to give you new life Read John 5:24. Jesus offers us an invitation to accept Him as our Savior so that we can have forgiveness for our sins. Slide 6: Are you ready to trust Jesus as your Savior? Read John 3:18. Everyone has to make a decision about what they are going to do with Jesus Christ. Slide 7: Trust God to empower you Read Galatians 2:20. After we accept Jesus as our Savior, God gives us the power we need to live in ways that please Him. Note: Consider using the Salvation Cards presentation PDF included in this lesson s download materials. Object Lesson: Kids love when you act something out with toys to illustrate a spiritual concept. Show a large bowl and explain that it represents our world. Fill it half full with water and explain that it represents sin. Now show a Lego man (or other small toy figure) who represents each of us. Drop the toy man into the center of the bowl and talk about how he is drowning in the middle, lost at sea! Just like him, we were alone and drowning in our sin. It is too far for the man to swim. He is alone with no friends to help him. He is tired and can barely swim any more. How can he be saved? God sees His creation is drowning in sin, so He sent a life preserver for us to hang on to. Bring out a Styrofoam cross, place it into the water, and show the man climbing onto it. We cannot save ourselves following the rules won t save us, going to church won t save us. Only hanging on to Jesus can save us. We hang on to Jesus by loving Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, committing to obey His commands. Do you have a favorite Gospel presentation that you use? Lead the children in a salvation presentation and prayer and provide an opportunity for them to pray and receive Christ as their Savior at this point. While there is no perfect or required prayer, here is a sample prayer you can use to have the children repeat after you. The * indicates breaks where you can have the children repeat after you. Have all the kids bow their heads and close their eyes. You can have all the children pray aloud, emphasizing that those who are already Christians should pray as a reminder and to allow their voices to provide courage for others. Or you can instruct the children to pray silently in their hearts where only God can hear.

Dear God, * I know that I have sinned, * and that I deserve to die for my sins. * But I know that Jesus, Your Son, * came and died for my sin, * and rose from the dead * to prove His power over death. * I want Jesus to be my Savior. * Please come into my life * and forgive my sins. * I want to be Your child. * Thank You for forgiving me! * Help me now to live for You * every day in every way, * even when it is hard. * I love You, God. * In Jesus name, amen. After you have led this prayer, ask any children who prayed this prayer for the first time and really meant it to raise their hands. Have them come up to the front of the room and join you. Gather them around you and give them all a group hug. Have everyone clap and cheer. Announce that they are now a part of God s family! Explain to them that the Bible says that there is now a celebration in heaven over their salvation (Luke 15:10). Follow Up: Be sure to give new Christians a Bible and any follow-up materials that your church may provide. It is important to give kids who come to Christ next steps so that they do not feel abandoned after making such an important decision. Dee s Disciple Tip: An easy way to explain the Gospel to a friend is to remember the ABC s of Salvation: A = Admit you are a sinner (Romans 3:23) B = Believe that Jesus died and rose again (Romans 10:9) C = Commit your life to Him (Philippians 1:21) KeyVerse Topic: Give a Reason Reference: 1 Peter 3:15 Memorization Activity: To teach this verse, use the Rebus PowerPoint slides provided with this unit. Always say the verse reference at the beginning and end of the verse to help the children memorize where the verse is found. 1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts = Heart with an arrow pointing to the center set apart = Cross Christ = Crown as Lord. = L inside crown Always be prepared = Cooking pot to give = Hand an answer = A inside hand to everyone = Stick figure who asks you = Voice lines to give the reason = Brain for the hope that you have. = H inside brain But do this with gentleness = Green G and respect. = Red R 1 Peter 3:15

INSPIRE ACTION Encourage kids to apply the Bible truth to their lives. Dramatize the Point The Newsroom This drama needs an editor-in-chief (with vest and necktie), two reporters (with clipboard and notepad), and a photographer (with camera around neck). The editor brings staff together for a huddle and obviously has some big news. Editor: Okay, staff, listen up! As you know, this month we will publish our Big Anniversary Issue, and I want the front page story to be big! Reporter 1: Exactly how big, boss? Editor: I mean I want it to be the biggest story ever! Reporter 2: Bigger than the mayor s stubbed toe, boss? Editor: [Irritated:] Yes! Bigger than that! That was the slowest news day ever! I want you to go out there and find the biggest news event in history and make it the front page story. [Exits.] Photographer: Well, the local high school team won state this year, is that big enough? Reporter 1: I think he wants bigger. Reporter 2: That huge building downtown burned down and the fire department saved that kitten before the whole thing imploded! Reporter 1: Um, bigger. Photographer: Wait! I got it! He said in history! What about when Neil Armchair landed on the moon? Reporter 2: I believe you mean Armstrong. Reporter 1: Whatever. Or the invention of the wheel or the cell phone or the garage door opener! Reporter 2: I think maybe we should think more important and long lasting. Photographer: [Very dramatically:] Even for all eternity. Reporter 2: Well, nothing lasts forever Reporter 1: Salvation does! Photographer: That s it! That is the biggest news story ever! Reporter 1: [Confused:] What is? Reporter 2: That Jesus died for our sins and offers salvation to everyone in the whole wide world! [Enter editor.] Reporter 1: We got it, boss! Editor: Great! This had better be good! Photographer: Ooooh, it s good, boss! No good news better than this, boss! Editor: Well, out with it! Reporter 2: We suggest the following headline for the Special Edition: JESUS DIES FOR THE WHOLE WORLD: SALVATION OFFERED TO EVERYONE! Editor: That s perfect! That is indeed the best Good News ever!

Name month day year signature Object Talks Puppet Talk Supplies: video projection A puppet named Toby is recording a video blog about how a boy named Luke at school returned a wallet Toby lost and said it was because Jesus wouldn t let him that he didn t take any of the money. This creates curiosity about Jesus in Toby s mind, but he still has questions and wants to watch for a while how this new friend lives. Featured verse: John 3:16 Certificate of was born into the Family of God on Let s Talk! Small Group Discussion Small Group Activity: Share a story or ask a volunteer to share a story of a time when you came close to an accident or getting injured. Tell the story of your narrow escape how you felt and what would have happened if you hadn t escaped or been saved. Discussion Questions: After the story, use these discussion questions to help the kids to come to terms with what God has saved them from, and what freedom they now have. 1) Do you suppose this story would be the same if the person telling the story didn t know about the danger nearly missed? 2) How could this story have ended? 3) How would you feel if this happened to you? When we talk about the Good News of the Gospel, we have to realize what we are being saved from for this to be truly meaningful. 1) What did Jesus save us from? 2) Could we have saved ourselves by just following the rules? Why or why not? 3) How should our lives be different when we accept the Good News of salvation? 4) Does being saved mean we are perfect people now? DiscipleTown Super Citizen For this lesson, offer the special New Believer Certificate for any children who put their trust in Christ as Lord and Savior (found in the Supplemental Resources download). Let s Pray! Dear Jesus, we are so thankful for the Good News that You came to die for us for the forgiveness of our sins. We are so thankful that You rose again to give us new life. Forgive us for trying to save ourselves by following rules instead, help us know You and fall in love with You more each day so that Your love overflows in us. Thank You, Jesus. Amen Cy s Challenge: If you ve asked Jesus to be your Savior, thank Him today! If not, what are you waiting for? 10

For the Home DiscipleTown Table Talker: Give each child a copy of this week s DiscipleTown Table Talker. Be sure to show the kids how to put it together and encourage them to ask their parents to lead family devotions three times this week. Parent Copy and send the below to help your parents connect with their kids during the week. Send them early in the week, but not on Sunday. As a courtesy, be sure parents have opted to receive these s. Review and edit as necessary to reflect the lesson elements you have used. You can also find this as a Microsoft Word document in your download bundle. Dear Mom and Dad, This week in Kids Church we began a brand-new series exploring how to explain our faith. Today we learned that in order to share our faith, we must first have a faith to call our own. Many times as parents and leaders, we focus solely on getting our children to say the sinner s prayer then we feel we ve brought our children to Christ. The fact is, our faith must constantly be growing and becoming stronger in our lives. Helping our children understand what salvation truly is, how to respond to God, and how to continue to allow God to change and transform them is a lifetime journey that we as parents and leaders have the pleasure of walking with our children. As we go through this series, use the DiscipleTown Table Talkers to create opportunities to talk about faith and salvation with your child(ren). Listen to your child(ren) s response to questions and take note of the simplicity of their faith. As we talk this month about the Good News of Jesus, your child(ren) will be encouraged to share their faith with others with courage and boldness. Let us know how we can help support you as your child(ren) witness to their friends and their friends families. This is a great opportunity to begin building relationships with those yet to be saved in your circle of influence. Building young disciples, [Your Name] 11

BONUS MATERIALS Use these options to extend your time or as substitutes for the ideas above. Chip s Snack Time! Supplies: whole orange, pre-cut orange slices Hold the whole orange and ask the children what kind of juice they would get if they squeezed it. Then ask them if they have ever had a sour orange. Explain that in order for an orange to become sweet, it needs lots of warm, sunny weather and just the right amount of rain each week. If the weather is cold, too dry or too rainy, the oranges become sour. Give kids the precut orange slices to eat. The same way that the orange needs lots of time in the sun to become sweet and juicy, we need lots of time with the Son (Jesus) for our lives to be sweet to others. If we do not spend time with God, the juice of our lives will not be sweet to others. Additional Ideas Newsroom Theme We suggest using a newsroom theme for this unit. Have a desk center stage, and the primary leader can be the editor-in-chief. Bulletin boards can be set up with newspapers, and perhaps a copy machine can be brought in for effect. For atmosphere, have different volunteers walking across the stage at different points as though they are busy on assignments. Give all your staff clipboards and consider having one person in the back corner typing on an old typewriter at all times! Bible Hero Kids Trading Cards Have the kids make Bible trading cards of themselves! You can either take pictures of them with a digital camera or have them draw themselves. They can fill out one side with their physical birth date as well as their spiritual birth date to emphasize that they have two birthdays one when they were born to their parents, and another when they were born into God s family! Emphasize that they are the Bible heroes of today by living for God and by reaching others for Jesus! If you print a bunch of the cards and give them out as prizes, kids can try collecting trading cards of each other. Training Notes When you lead a child to Christ, the author considers there to be seven essential elements of prayer for you to consider including (you will see included in the prayer in Explore Scripture): 1. ADMISSION of SIN 2. ADMISSION that we deserve to die for sin 3. BELIEF THAT JESUS: a. is God b. came and died for us c. rose from the dead 4. ASK FOR FORGIVENESS and SALVATION then transition in tone: 5. EXPRESS THANKS for FORGIVENESS 6. EXPRESS DESIRE to LIVE FOR GOD 7. EXPRESS LOVE FOR GOD in CLOSING. 12

The reason for the transition is that children can wonder when salvation will happen. They may think that they requested it and are still waiting for it. Thanking God for salvation in the prayer helps them understand that it happened during the prayer and that it has happened it is not something that is still on the way. Arm Children with Gospel Literature Have plenty of fun Gospel tracts available during this series for the kids to take home and use to practice talking to their friends about Jesus. Some kids will want to take handfuls of tracts. Encourage them to take five, and let them know that if they use the five they take, they can have more next week. However, there will be some children who will really take to a literature ministry and sincerely use them. If you can sense they truly use them, be generous and do not hinder kids from having more, but do it after church or when other children may not see they are getting extras. Teach the kids not to waste material and not to push it on people who are not interested. At the same time, encourage them to be bold in their witness and to find creative ways to spread the Good News. Many people have come to Christ because of reading Gospel literature. Give kids ideas of places they can leave literature, but without littering. A great source for Gospel tracts is atsdirect.org 13
