How to Navigate the New Testament Lesson 3 Live as God s People TM Unit Summary For many kids, the Bible seems so big and complex that they feel overwhelmed. They don t know how to start mining the riches in the New Testament. In this unit, you will take children on a tour that will unlock the mysteries of God s Word and give them confidence to navigate through the New Testament. Your kids will learn how the New Testament fits together. You will show that the 27 New Testament books fall into three groups: History, Living Letters, and Prophecy. In addition, they will meet some key authors of the New Testament. Finally, you will guide children to apply Bible truths to their lives. Lesson Summary Next in our New Testament Tour are the final letters of the Bible, many of them short, and focused on how God expects us to act as Christians. The theme of each of these books is a different aspect of the Christian walk and provides insights into how God wants us to respond in different life situations. As children grow in their faith and knowledge of Scripture, they will find themselves wanting to see their life more and more reflect the attributes and attitudes that are described in the Bible. These books provide lots of advice on how God wants us to conduct ourselves. Disciple Targets In this lesson, your children will... Karl Bastian / Kidology.org Welcome! Barefoot Day As the kids arrive, have them take off their shoes and toss them all into a giant pile. If they ask why, explain that today, you ll be talking about living as God s people, and in Bible times Christians didn t have such nice shoes! At the end of service, you can play the classic game where the kids race to find and put on their shoes from a giant mixed-up pile in the center of a circle. To avoid too big of a rush, call out categories such as those wearing a certain color or simply boys or girls, depending on the size of your group. Let s Meet-n-Greet! Invite the kids to turn and ask two other students what their favorite thing was that happened this past week. Leaders, be sure to stop whatever you are doing to move through the audience and greet the children, especially those you do not recognize. Announce any birthdays for the week. (See the How to Use DiscipleTown guide for quick and easy ways to acknowledge visitors and birthdays.) 2
Let s Worship! Recommended Song: Just Be Yourself, from God Rocks, Cry Out!, available on Kidology.org People try to tell you how to act and be but you should be who God made you to be. God made just one of you! Puppet Intro Leader & puppet introduce today s lesson. You will find a scripted version of this intro at the end of the lesson. Puppet has some newspapers, but he seems upset. Leader asks what is wrong, and Puppet says, This is the third day in a row Maggie hasn t answered my questions! It s no fair! I need help! Leader asks what s the matter, and Puppet explains that he has a question he needs help with and asks if maybe the Leader might be willing to help answer it. The leader says he is willing to help, so Puppet explains that he is having a problem getting along with some kids at school and is wondering how he is supposed to respond. Puppet says that he was looking through the newspaper the other day and saw that there was a column called Dear Maggie, where people could write to this nice old lady and ask for advice. If you were lucky, she might pick your letter and answer it. So he wrote to Maggie, but every day he checks the paper and hasn t gotten an answer to his letter, so he just doesn t know what to do! Leader asks if Puppet knows that the Bible is filled with letters that are answers to Christians questions on how to behave in response to problems. Puppet says no, he didn t know that. Leader explains that the early Church faced a lot of tough situations and problems after Jesus left and went back to heaven, and they didn t always know the right or the best thing to do, so they would write to the apostles for advice. Many of the books of the Bible are the apostles letters to the churches with the answers they gave to these questions. Even today, we have many of the same problems. So by reading the Bible we often find answers to the things we are struggling with. Leader says, I bet if you spent more time reading God s Word, you would find great advice on how to conduct yourself and deal with the issues you re having with these kids at school. The Bible has a lot to say about how to get along with others. Puppet says, Thanks. I can t wait to discover what the Bible says about how to get along with others! Let s Play! Bible Book Baseball: Living Letters to Christians Series! Note: Use the New Testament Tour found in the Additional Resources download to motivate kids to learn more about the New Testament. Use questions from the tour as you lead the children in a Bible Baseball game. Set up: Create a baseball infield around the outer edge of your room. The bases can be made of poster board, or you may simply mark out areas on the floor with tape. Contestants begin on the stage, which is home plate. Label first base History, second base Living Letters, and third base Prophecy. Two Options: You can divide into two teams (such as sides of the room or boys vs. girls) or simply have children compete as individuals. (Individual play is more likely to encourage personal study during the week.) You may be able to combine the two so that you have fun competition during the service for team points, but reward those who make it around the bases as well. Rules of Play: The leader calls out questions from the New Testament Tour Guide. (See sample questions below.) Use only questions from the Living Letters to Leaders and Christians for today s game. Children race to raise their hands and provide the correct answer. The first child to answer correctly gets to come to home plate to begin working his or her way around the bases. Once a child has made it around all four bases, he or she returns to the audience; the child still can compete to do the bases again if time allows. 3
Sample Questions: 1. Hebrews tells us to walk in faith, or deeds? 2. Which book tells us to avoid false teachers? 3. 1 John s action step is stay in the light. What s the theme? 4. This book s action step is do your best. The KeyVerse is 2:15. Multi-play Option: The purpose of this game is less about the game and more about the repetition of the content and the children learning the biblical content of the books. Therefore, the more who are participating the better. In order to speed the game play and allow more children to advance, though only one leader may be reading the questions, you can have multiple leaders choosing children to compete. You can have as many children chosen to answer and advance as you have leaders to pick and listen to answers! In other words, if you have six leaders, after the question is read, it can be the first six kids to raise their hands and give the correct answer to the nearest leader who advance. Each of those six leaders will look for the nearest child who raises a hand first, walk over to the child, and listen to the answer. You can post a leader at each base to determine who on the base was the first to raise a hand to advance off that base and move forward to the next base. Continue the game week to week if you wish. Keep track of what square kids were on, and let them pick up where they left off the week before. This way you can set a time limit for the game, such as ten minutes, and even use a timer and play until time is up. The leaders at each base can write down who was on that base before the kids sit down. Connect with Your Kids Supplies: stack of junk mail, little trash can Show a stack of mail and talk about all the junk mail you get every week, and then toss it in the can at your feet saying, The world is full of a lot of junk messages we get every day in mail, on television, in movies, on the radio, and everywhere we turn (throw the mail out) but the Bible is full of important messages we can choose to read every day, and none of them are junk! We ve all heard the saying, Do as I say, not as I do. This comes from the unfortunate reality that it is much easier to preach something than to live it. The Living Letters to Christians give instructions on how to live as Christians. James is quite bold on the topic of being doers and not hearers only. In order to bring the topic from concept to reality and help your students make the connection between the lesson and real life, share a personal story of a time when you had to make a choice related to your conduct based on Scripture. Perhaps there was a time you needed to make a decision or respond to someone lovingly and you turned to Scripture for advice on what to do. These real-life stories help kids see that the Bible is more than just a book that is opened for them at church, but one they too can turn to during the week when they need help in tough situations. DiscipleTown Visitor [Your State] Jones* (Indiana-Jones-type character for example, Colorado Jones or Wisconsin Ted or Virginia Virginia. ) Dressed as an adventurer, reading a Bible, Jones enters with his nose buried in the Bible at 1 John 4:7-21, reading aloud and adding comments like, Wow, this is great stuff, this is amazing. His hair is messy, and his shirt is on backwards with a pants pocket hanging out. As he walks he yells at kids for being so rude because he s trying to concentrate. He bumps into someone and tells the person to get out of the way, and is generally obnoxious on his entry. (Draw this out a bit.) The leader will need a pocket mirror. 4
Jones: Wow, I can think of a few people who need to hear this! Leader: Excuse me, [Your State Jones], what are you doing? Jones: Oh, man this book, the Bible is so amazing. Some really great stuff in here! Everybody should read this book! Man! Leader: [Looks at Jones appearance.] Um, are you okay? Jones: Of course! Why wouldn t I be? Leader: Well, you look like you haven t slept in a week! Jones: That s ridiculous; I look just fine! Leader: I see. Have you looked at yourself in the mirror this morning? Jones: Well, no, but I m fine! I feel fine. What could possibly be wrong? Leader: [Rummages in bag/closet for hand mirror.] Well, because I can see that you are quite a mess! See? Jones: [Looks in mirror.] What s going on? My hair is a disaster...and I have my shirt on backwards! I didn t even realize! [Tries to fix everything.] I can t believe I didn t notice! Leader: Well, sometimes it s easier for other people to see things that we mess up with than for us to see. We need a mirror. Jones: I should say so! Now I can get back to my reading. Leader: What are you reading? Jones: I m reading this Bible you gave me. I m right near the end, too! I m reading all about love. It says here, Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. I can think of a few people I d like to show that to! This book has a lot of really great advice! Leader: Hmm, [Your State Jones], do you know who those letters were written to? Jones: Uh, well, Santa? Written to Santa? Leader: No, these letters were written to the Christians to teach them how to act! You see, just as you needed a mirror to see how messy your hair was, the early Christians needed these letters to help them see how unloving their actions were. They claimed to love God but treated each other with such meanness! They needed the mirror of the Bible to help them know how to act with love. Jones: Oh, man, I see what you mean! Come to think of it, I think I am guilty too. Those kids were so noisy when I came in, and I was quite rude to them. I didn t really do what these words said, I just read them. I guess I need to think about these words more carefully. I guess I need to consider what this message about Jesus and all His teachings is about for me! Excuse me, I have some things to think about. [Exits, serious and pensive.] Leader: [To audience:] You see, boys and girls, the Bible says in James 1:23-25, Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it he will be blessed in what he does. The New Testament has many books that act like a mirror we can read and see what a Christian should be like, and then use those books to see what areas God wants to change in us! *CHARACTERS: These are suggested characters and names. Please feel free to change or adjust according to the actors and props you have available. 5
EXPLORE SCRIPTURE Seize on the children s interest and direct them into God s Word. Let s Search! Bible Dash Supplies: Bibles Ask all kids with Bibles to participate, or invite a few volunteers to come to the front. As children hold Bibles closed with hands on covers, state the Bible reference twice, then on the command SEARCH! have the students race to locate the verse. Once they have a finger on the verse, they can stand and call out, FOUND IT! Have the first child read the verse aloud while you project the verse on a screen via PowerPoint. See suggestions below for comments on each verse. Keep your comments brief and to the point of the lesson. 1 John 2:6 2 Peter 3:11 1 Peter 2:12 Philippians 1:21 2 Peter 1:5-8 Romans 14:19 2 Peter 3:14 Hebrews 12:14 If we claim to live in Jesus, we must live as He lived. What kind of people ought we to be? Holy and godly. Live such good lives that unbelievers see your life and glorify God. To live is Christ, to die is gain. A list of characteristics to add to our lives. Make every effort to do what leads to peace. Make every effort to be found blameless. Make every effort to live at peace and be holy. Paul s Power Principle: Godly men wrote letters to help Christians grow. Click here to change text Suggested Bible Narrative Peter s Vision Acts 10:1-35 Peter s heart is changed toward the Gentiles by a vision from God. We too can have our hearts changed by listening to God through Scripture. Let s Learn! Live as God s People Supplies: old book, mirror Follow the Leader: The leader should go to the end of one of the rows of children and have the kids follow him or her. Define for the kids which rows are to follow the leader. If the children do not sit in chairs/rows but on the floor, then get a long rope and lay it out in a long, winding pattern and have them all grab it with one hand, and that will put them into a line instantly. Tell them they are not to change their place once the line starts moving. The leader should lead the kids on a journey. If possible, lead them out of the room and around the church. If you can, go outside and around the building. If appropriate (and without disturbing the adults), lead the children past the adult service, tiptoeing and going quietly. Optional: The leader can wear a white robe and blue sash (dressed like Jesus in much Bible art) and not explain why until after leading them back to the classroom. (Don t say you are Jesus; say you are imitating Jesus.) 6
Read 1 Corinthians 11:1. Paul wanted his followers to imitate him, but only when he was imitating Jesus. You followed me around the church. But what if I had led you into a busy street? You can mention a busy street outside the church or a highway the kids know by name. Would you have followed? No, at that point, I would have been a bad leader! We are to follow Jesus, and we follow Jesus by following leaders who are following Jesus; but at the same time, we have to be looking at their lives and asking, Are THEY following Jesus? Are they leading me toward Jesus, or away from Jesus? Read Luke 9:57. That s what I want to say to Jesus, how about you? Life is a follow-theleader game; the question is not Will you follow? but Who will you follow? Mirror Game: Ask for volunteers who are friends. (Have them raise their hands together.) When they come up, one is to be the mirror and the other the person. The mirror is to do whatever the person does as a mirror image, of course. Stand the friends about two feet away from each other. You can do two or three pairs at a time. This can be a lot of fun for the whole group to watch. You ll have kids doing this after church. The Point: To succeed at this, you have to really watch the other person and react quickly to his or her every move. And the better you know the person, the better you ll be. Following Jesus is the same you have to really watch Jesus so you can react to His moves, and the better you know Jesus, the better you ll be at following His moves! Find an old book you no longer need, buy a mirror at a craft store, and paste it inside the middle of the book. (You may need to cut out some pages with a razor to get the pages to close. You can even embed the mirror down into the pages in the center. It s up to you how well you make the prop; you ll use it many times.) Then you may want to glue the rest of the pages closed along the edges so it only opens at the mirror page. On the cover, make a title that simple says, You. Tell the kids that you have a book that is about what God considers very, very important. Have the children come up, one by one, to open the book and read it. Tell them not to tell anyone what it says it can only be experienced personally. As they come up, you can talk about the message of the book without giving it away, and the kids often won t. You will think of many ways to keep talking about the message of the book as the kids line up to see the special message of the book, which is just seeing themselves. The Point: The New Testament is our guidebook for knowing how to live. It is filled with advice and tips and secrets for life, from our Creator and who would know better than He? It is like a mirror that shows us ourselves what we need to change and improve. We would be foolish not to read it every chance we get! BONUS POWERPOINT: For those wanting to dig deeper, the Supplemental Resources download folder contains a bonus PowerPoint with slides outlining the New Testament books and highlighting each book s theme, theme verse, and action step. Customize a presentation to teach kids the Living Letters to Leaders and Christians. Dee s Disciple Tip: Seven days makes one week, but seven days without the Bible makes one weak. Paul and other apostles wrote these letters to help Christians live victoriously. Read twice daily and call God in the morning! 7
KeyVerse Topic: The New Testament s Purpose Reference: John 20:30-31 Memorization Activity: By this third week, kids should be starting to have it memorized, so have a few demonstrate this and reward them in order to encourage others to put some hard work and effort into memorizing it as well. Ask the kids how the Bible helps us know for sure that Jesus is the only one worth following. 8
INSPIRE ACTION Encourage kids to apply the Bible truth to their lives. Dramatize the Point Meet the Author Every week during this unit a different biblical author will visit DiscipleTown to talk about the book (or books) of the Bible he wrote and why and how he wrote them. The author will read one of his favorite passages and then do a book signing at the end of the service. (If you have a time machine, that would be a fun addition to this activity!) This week James is here to talk to the children about his epistle, the book of James. A basic summary of the dialogue appears below however, the actor is encouraged to build on this and ad-lib. This is only a suggested text. It is not intended to be memorized. James enters with enthusiasm, happy to see the children. He is dressed in nice Bible-times clothes and sandals. Wow, I am so glad to see you ladies and gentlemen! I was just writing a letter to my young friends about Jesus. He pauses, looks at the kids, and chuckles. Ha ha. You know, Jesus was my stepbrother I mean, He and I played ball in the streets and worked with my dad in the carpenter shop. I always thought He was a little odd, hiding away in the gardens and trees for alone time. He pauses as he remembers. Actually, one time I was really sick with a fever, and He just came and sat beside me, patting my shoulder, and within minutes I started to feel better. I didn t know it then, but my stepbrother was the Messiah, the Son of God. I watched Him grow and teach so many, but I also watched Him die that horrible death, only to discover He was alive and roaming the streets of Jerusalem just a few short days later! I saw for myself, and I knew Him better than most, that He is the real deal. But don t just listen to my words; you need to decide what you believe about Him and then go and live it! Don t just listen to my words because that won t help you at all. Live it, do it, follow Jesus with all your heart like I have. I wrote a little letter to my friends I m sure they will let you read it! It will help you understand what I mean. I gotta run more people to share the Good News with! See ya later! Object Talks inavigate the New Testament LETTERS to CHRISTIANS Supplies: video projection The videos in this unit feature a fun character named ireed Dabook who helps kids learn how to navigate the New Testament by using his GPS device (God s Powerful Scripture device). He explain the sections of the Bible and gives a brief overview of the books of the Bible in each featured section covered in this video. Featured NT books: Letters to Christians 9
on presented by month day year Let s Talk Let s Talk! Small Group Discussion Small Group Activity: Beforehand, trace four to five circles from yellow construction paper using a drinking glass. Cut out petals of various colors, enough for five petals per circle. On each yellow circle, write a situation that your students may face, a time when they have to choose how to respond (for example, bullying or cheating). Glue each circle to the center of a piece of construction paper. Give your group the first situation. Discuss with them what choices they could make (good and bad choices) to respond to this situation. Write these options on four of the petals. Have them discuss which would be the biblical way to respond write this solution on the fifth petal. Glue all the petals around your yellow circle to form a flower. God wants to help us make good choices, because good choices help us to grow strong and flourish. Discussion Questions: 1. Why are our words and actions important? 2. Is it just our actions that are wrong, or is there something in our hearts that needs to be addressed, something that causes the actions in the first place? What could those things be? 3. If we allow God to change our hearts, what happens to our words and actions? 4. Why is obedience important in helping God change our hearts? Awarded to for Good Role-Modeling award DiscipleTown Super Citizen Award a Super Citizen certificate to a child who has recently made significant improvements in his or her faith and behavior. Let s Pray! Dear Jesus, thank You for showing us in the Bible this week how important our words and actions are. Forgive us for the many times that we mess up and hurt others. Help us to look to Your word for guidance and to have teachable hearts so that You can change us and help us grow. Help us to be quick to say we re sorry, and quick to forgive. Thank You for Your love and grace for us. We love you. In Your holy name, amen. Cy s Challenge: Ask an adult what area you need to work on and listen to the answer humbly. Let s Review! If you have extra time, use these review questions to keep the kids focused on the lesson until time to dismiss. A handful of candy will help you keep their attention. After each question, take a minute to reiterate the lesson point related to the question. 1) How many Living Letters are directed to Christians? 2) James says we should be and not only of the word. 3) The Bible is like what object in our bathroom? 4) Who was Peter s heart changed toward? 5) Who was James s brother? 6) We should imitate people as they imitate who? 7) Godly men wrote letters to help us. 10
For the Home DiscipleTown Table Talker: Give each child a copy of this week s DiscipleTown Table Talker. Be sure to show the kids how to put it together and encourage them to ask their parents to lead family devotions three times this week. Parent Copy and send the below to help your parents connect with their kids during the week. Send them early in the week, but not on Sunday. As a courtesy, be sure parents have opted to receive these s. Review and edit as necessary to reflect the lesson elements you have used. You can also find this as a Microsoft Word document in your download bundle. Dear Mom and Dad, This lesson was challenging as we explored how the New Testament teaches us about our conduct, and how a Christian should behave. We learned that in order for God to change our hearts we must learn from the Bible and then obey it. This week as you tuck your child(ren) into bed, share what God is teaching you through His Word right now in your life. Share with them how you need to practice obedience, and how God is changing your own heart. You also can use the DiscipleTown Table Talkers to start conversations during meal-times or whenever you have time to chat! As we move forward, we will be challenging the kids to look at their own faith and giving them an opportunity to accept Christ as their Savior or rededicate their lives. You may find this week there is a great opportunity for this discussion at home. Be encouraged to pray with and encourage your child(ren) to personally dedicate their lives to Christ. Share with us so that we can celebrate and rejoice with your family and continue to partner with you as you pour yourself into your child(ren)! Building young disciples, [Your Name] 11
BONUS MATERIALS Use these options to extend your time or as substitutes for the ideas above. Chip s Snack Time! Supplies: loaf of raisin or cinnamon bread, jug of fruit or grape juice, paper plates/cups Have the children wash their hands and work together to set a plate and cup for everyone at their tables. Pass the loaf of bread around and ask each child to rip off a small piece for themselves, then pass on to the next person. Ask a volunteer to help you pour and serve the juice. In the Bible s Living Letters to Christians, God teaches us the importance of serving others and sharing. The early church did this with many of their meals and belongings, sharing with anyone. We can learn how to live our lives in love and service to God and to others. Additional Ideas Play-Dough Dictionary Using play-dough, have kids race to spell words that are found in the Bible s Living Letters regarding conduct (for example, love, kindness, generosity, gentleness, patience, forgiveness). Just like the play-dough needs to be soft for us to change its shape, we have to have a soft, teachable heart so that God can change it. Ripe or Not? Supplies: two or three pieces of evidently ripe fruit, and one or two pieces of unripened fruit (green banana or strawberry) Show the children the various pieces of fruit. Ask them to identify which ones are ripe and ready to eat and which ones aren t. Ask them how they know which is which allow for discussion. The way that we can tell if a fruit is mature and ripe (ready to eat) is by how it appears and how it tastes. The Bible says that other people will know if we are becoming mature Christians by our words and our actions toward other Christians. 12
