Parents are required to attend a prebaptism instruction. Sponsors (godparents) must meet church requirements. RECONCILIATION The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance, Confession) will be celebrated on every Saturday 3:304:15 PM. Please call St. Emery s at to make an appointment for individual confession. MARRIAGE Arrangements are to be made at least six months in advance. Couples must attend a Diocesan Marriage Preparation Conference. No booking for a reception should be finalized until an initial meeting is scheduled with Father Milan Dimic or Deacon Rudy. Trankovich Finance Committee Chairperson Mr. Carroll Fencil January 21, 2018 Third Sunday of Ordinary Time "So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him." What did Zebedee think about all of this? His sons and his partners, James and John, suddenly left their post and followed Jesus. So there he stood in the boat Thank with you a crew to all of who employees, participated but not in one this of project! his sons. We can't help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this promise that his heirs would become "fishers of men." Most likely, this event was the cause of some familial tension. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus instructs us to love and serve others for the love of God. But the Lord also makes it clear that our devotion to him is meant to trump our devotion to anything-or anyone-else. For our part, we are called to allow this divine allegiance to exist in those we love, even when it means a sacrifice for us as well. Parents for example, like Zebedee, are called to encourage their children to follow the Lord's call. A son or daughter's vocation to religious life certainly exemplifies this kind of sacrifice for a parent who might have had a different plan in mind. But in truth every son and daughter has a vocation from God and parents have the opportunity to support and assist their children as they seek to hear and follow God's special plan for their lives. We don't know for sure how Zebedee responded to the vocation of his sons, but we know that James and John were counted among the Twelve Apostles and that their devotion and dedication helped to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Regardless of what he might have thought as he stood in that boat, we can be quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee can rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave their nets and follow Christ. 4 Parish Book Lending Ministry We have a little book shelf in our Parish Hall that will be used to share books with parishioners. If you have some books to donate, please contact the parish office. Children s books will also be accepted. We have now expanded this ministry to include another book shelf in the Parish Center. There are many new books available on both shelves. Please visit our growing library. You are free to borrow books at any time. AROUND THE DIOCESE Fairfield University Art Museum. Beginning February 1 the museum will be presenting the major international loan exhibition The Holy Name. Art of Gesu: Bernini and his Age. The museum will be open daily Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM with tours at 12:00 noon. Defending our Religious Liberty #308, Jan. 21, 2018 Fifty years ago, the Second Vatican Council adopted a declaration on religious freedom called, Dignitatis Humanae. In it, it says that religious freedom includes the freedom to practice our faith in public. In our culture, some tend to think that religious liberty means only that individuals can worship without interference from the government. This understanding is inadequate. Religious schools, hospitals, and charities should be able to operate in accordance with their faith. Indeed, the work of these organizations is part and parcel of their faith. They are expressions of religious mission, and religions must have the space to live out their missions. Let us pray that legislators who work to replace the federal health care mandate will read and be inspired by Dignitatis Humanae.

5 SHARING FAITH AT HOME Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Choir News Rehearsals have resumed on Thursdays at 7:00 PM. All voices high school age and older are welcome to join, and anyone interested should contact Music Director Mary Rose Garych after Mass or at or No musical training required but all must have a love of singing! We are looking to expand the music ministry and always welcome new members. Question of the week Are you ready and willing to follow Jesus? Sharing the Gospel Jesus is a person of action and we are asked to be the same. The fishermen immediately put down their nets to follow him. The Kingdom of God is here and now. How might our lives be different if we see the Kingdom as here in the present? In Church The church looks different without all the decorations from Christmas. Look around. What is one thing that you notice that maybe you never really noticed before? Do you know who all the statues represent? Did you ever really notice that the stained glass windows tell the journey of St. Francis of Assisi? Look up at the church ceiling. Do you know what each painting represents? Our church is a work of art. Enjoy it and use it to focus on during your prayer time.
