1 INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW TESTAMENT (BI 102B) Prairie Bible College, Winter 2006 (3 cr.) Wednesday and Friday, 2:00-3:15 p.m. in Founders Hall 231 Course Website: Instructor: Steven C. Ibbotson, M.Div., Ph.D. Office: FB Phone: ext Hours: Posted on office door COURSE RATIONALE Before an in-depth study of the New Testament writings can be done, it is essential that one be familiar with the big picture of these writings their historical framework, overall structure, basic content, and main themes. This course is intended to prepare you for subsequent and more detailed study of the New Testament by surveying this big picture. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to: 1. describe generally the historical background of the New Testament. 2. outline generally the content of the New Testament. 3. summarize generally the main theological themes of the New Testament. 4. identify some of the critical issues related to the study of the New Testament. 5. begin to apply the New Testament to your life and to the Church today. 6. appreciate the New Testament as a significant part of God s Word to us. COURSE DESIGN This course provides many pedagogical challenges for the instructor, especially due to the variety in experience and expectations among students in relation to the study of the New Testament. Some of you have had little experience in real study of the New Testament, while others have much more experience. Some of you are looking for in-depth academic study, while others are concerned simply to know what the New Testament has to say to you today in your daily life. This course is intended to cut a middle path, recognizing the variety of experiences and incorporating both academic and applicational concerns. In general terms, the assignments are designed to assess your learning in a variety of ways. The tests are more focused on memorization of facts; the responses to the study questions are more focused on comprehension of concepts as evidenced by written description; and the term project is more focused on independent research skills and creative application of the knowledge gained through that research. While some students may excel in some of these specific areas but not in others, in this way all the assignments provide a more balanced assessment of your learning in the course. This course will use a Team-Based Learning approach (see Michaelson, Knight, & Fink, 2002). Your instructor will provide further information on this approach, its benefits, and the expectations on you in the first few classes. In general, the Team-Based Learning approach will enable you to learn from other students as well as the instructor as you interact with each other s responses to the study questions and examine the teaching of the NT.

Attendance Consistent attendance is essential for receiving the full benefit of this course; inconsistent attendance will inevitably be reflected in assignment and exam grades. Thus, you will be required to initial an attendance chart at each class period indicating your attendance of that class. Note on attendance: You may be penalized for each class period missed over and above four missed classes. See the PBC Academic Guide for more details. 2. Course Workbook & Study Guide You are to complete a Course Workbook & Study Guide through the semester, indicating completion of the relevant reading and answering the study questions before the class indicated on the course schedule. The Course Workbook & Study Guide is worth 30% of your total grade. You will be graded on the completion, adequacy, and accuracy of your answers to these study questions, as well as the degree of completion of your reading. 3.
