1 Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary PH 911: Explorations in Biblical Theology Professor Cheryl B. Anderson Room 323 Pfeiffer Dates as specified 8:00 am to 11:00 am (847) Professor K. K. Yeo 121 Pfeiffer (847) Description: The field of biblical theology is fascinating. It took shape over more than the past two hundred years and has met numerous challenges during that time but continues to survive. This course will explore the traditional parameters of biblical theology, the critiques, and contemporary expressions of the field. Outcomes: Being: to contribute to a student s formation as a Christian educator and scholar who is grounded in biblical theology and its contribution to the Church and the academy Knowing: to be familiar with the issues raised, the intersections with other disciplines, and the contours of the discipline today. Fair understanding of, as well as critical and creative appropriation of, methodology in reading/interpreting/constructing biblical theologies, in whatever setting. Doing: to engage current scholarly discussions in the field of biblical theology Assignments: 1. Three to four pages (double-spaced) reading report for every class session, raising critical issues in the readings. These papers are due at the beginning of each session. 2. Development of a 45-minute lecture on the field of biblical theology that could be given in a Masters-level course. 3. A twenty-five-page research paper that engages a theme or responds to a challenge in the field of biblical theology. The professors must approve the chosen topic. The paper should include the descriptive work of other scholars as well as the constructive work of the student. Due dates for the lecture and research paper will be determined after the beginning of the course. 1

Our class discussions will supplement and integrate the readings rather than repeat that material, and the approach used in the class requires your presence to process the material. Consequently, attendance is required. Three or more absences will prohibit the successful completion of the course. Partial absences due to tardiness or early departures, among other things, will count towards missing a full class session. If you have to miss a class for any reason, please inform the class assistant in advance by telephone or . All assignments must be submitted to complete the course. Furthermore, all assignments must be submitted on the date specified. Requests for extensions are strongly discouraged and will disrupt the learning process. Ms. Krista McNeil, administrator for academic affairs, oversees all accommodations. She can be reached at krista.mcneil@garrett.edu or

3 Reasonable accommodations will only be considered for students who have met with Krista and completed the appropriate paperwork and documentation. Academic Integrity and Plagiarism: The professors expect that each student will familiarize him or herself with the institution s expectations regarding plagiarism and academic integrity. Here s a link to the current plagiarism policy: Academic_Integrity.jnz. In the context of the requirements of this course, students are encouraged to ask the professors any questions they may have about understanding and avoiding plagiarism. Do not assume that you already know what constitutes plagiarism. You are responsible for understanding Garrett Evangelical s expectations regarding plagiarism. 3
