Hagia Sophia Classical Academy This is a partial version of the Parent- Student Handbook, including: Vision, Mission and Faith Statements Student Honor Code House Rules and Student Etiquette Student Dress Policy, Philosophy, List and Code Note: The completed Parent- Student Handbook for is scheduled to be handed out during the upcoming Delphi Parent Meeting, which will be held on September 27, 2011 at 7:30pm. See you there! g h SCIENTIA MENS SAPIENTIAQUE IN CHRISTO (Knowledge, Understanding and Wisdom in Christ) NON NOBIS, DOMINE, NON NOBIS, SED NOMINE TU O DA GLORIAM! (Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to Your Name be the glory Psalm 115:1) Rigorous teachers seized my youth, And purged its faith and trimmed its fire, Showed me the high, white star of Truth, There bade me gaze and there aspire. - Matthew Arnold
2 HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY Vision Statement We desire that all students will embrace a lifelong love of God, of their fellow man and of learning; that they will grow as men and women of virtue and noble character who live purely, work eagerly, contemplate clearly, listen attentively, discern wisely, reason rightly and articulate accurately... and they will do all of this willfully from their hearts as an act of worship for the glory of the Triune God the Father, the Son (Christ, the Logos) and the Holy Spirit. Mission Statement To educate and challenge able and committed students by means of the seven liberal arts and the four sciences, based upon two millennia of enduring classical wisdom, which is rooted in the traditions of historic Christianity. We will cultivate in our students wisdom and virtue by nourishing their souls on truth, goodness and beauty. We will ready them to approach life and vocation in this world with exceptional skill, faith, humility, honor, and delight to the end that, in Jesus Christ the Wisdom, the Word, and the Son of God these young men and women are better able to know and enjoy God and are better prepared to live out the Kingdom of God, both in this temporal life and in the life of the world to come. Statement of Faith The statement of faith adopted by Hagia Sophia Classical Academy is The Nicene Creed, which is considered to be central to the Great Hall of Christianity, and sets Christianity apart from all other faiths. It contains the key elements of Christianity that will be taught without reserve in various ways through all grade levels. g The Nicene Creed h We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light from Light; true God from true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, through whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. And He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And on the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And in one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY 3 AFFIRMATION OF STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES (THE STUDENT HONOR CODE) The purpose of the Student Honor Code should be thought of as something like that of a banner. All of us must strive to keep that standard raised up in the air and off the soiled ground. If, at any time the banner begins to fall, it would be the noble, honorable and valiant thing for any one of us, or many of us, to run to the aid of the fallen and, with kindness and gentleness, help him or her lift the banner back up. As a banner, then, the Student Honor Code is a symbol of our culture: the culture of Hagia Sophia Classical Academy. It is the duty of each and every one of us here to help foster and maintain our culture of Respect, Order, Unity, Diligence and Honesty 1 by encouraging each other to live a life of Dignity, Honor, Integrity and Nobility. Dignity - A man s peculiar place in society and the world, i.e., your position in the cosmos. Honor - Showing others the deferences, acclaim and respect according to their dignity. Integrity - Living out the truth and principles of honor and dignity. Nobility - Living in accordance with your dignity (being content where God has placed you and living under His sovereignty with all your heart). Sidenote: The mind of modern man rarely, if ever, considers dignity (as described above) and, therefore, has no direction of where he is, where he came from, and where he is to go. Not so with you! You are to develop a mind steeped in history, in the Great Books, in the Greatest of the Great Books (the Holy Scriptures) and in the Logos; Christ Himself, the Living Word of God. You are to develop a mind and heart that transcends contemporary, temporal thinking. If you do this, you will be equipped to live well with both God and man in any circumstance that comes your way. Saint Paul wrote, in his letter to the Romans, that we are to recognize our true dignity and, then, to be liberal and generous in accordance with the dignity that God has given us. 2 Hagia Sophia Classical Academy has developed two honor codes, one for the Grammar level scholars and one for the Dialectic and Rhetoric level scholars. The Grammar level Student Honor Code is a simplified code that can be easily memorized by the Grammar scholar. The following Student Honor Codes contain principles that Hagia Sophia Classical Academy holds to be essential for student body life. Each student of Hagia Sophia Classical Academy must be able to affirm the Student Honor Code and assent to live by its principles. 1 Derived from Let Discretion Be Your Guide, Andrew Kern s, Circe Institute faculty training at Hagia Sophia Classical Academy. 2 Romans 12:3-10
4 HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY STUDENT HONOR CODE 3 (Dialectic & Rhetoric Levels) - Respect, Order, Unity, Diligence and Honesty through Dignity, Honor, Integrity and Nobility - Attendance at Hagia Sophia Classical Academy is a great privilege. And like all privileges, it comes with certain responsibilities. I, therefore, personally accept each of the following responsibilities. To God Almighty: I will seek to honor the Lord in all that I think, say and do and submit to His commands. (Deut. 26:17) I recognize that my appearance and behavior reflect on God as much as on me. (I Cor. 10:31) To my parents: I will attempt to honor my parents in everything I think, say and do. (Ex. 20:12) I will seek to learn all that I can from them. (Eph. 6:1-3) I acknowledge that I cannot receive all that I need in life or godliness without them. (Ps. 78:1-8) To my church: I will submit to the authorities in the church that God has placed over me. (Titus 2:1-5) I will make worship, discipleship and spiritual growth a priority in my life. (Gal. 2:20) I will attempt to be an ambassador of Christ and His church wherever I am. (Matt. 28:19-20) To my teachers and administrators: I will seek to do all the work I have been assigned with diligence, honesty and integrity. (Eph. 5:8-17) I will do my utmost to learn as much and achieve as much as I possibly can. (Phil. 4:8-9) I will demonstrate respect, attentiveness, gratitude and obedience to my teachers and the leaders of my school (Heb. 13:17) and will purpose to: Obey Right Away All the Way With a Good Attitude Every Day 4 To my classmates: I will honor and respect the time, work and feelings of my fellow students. (Rom. 12:9-18) I will model honesty, integrity, kindness, and modesty in my relationships. (Phil. 2:3-7) I will love others by humbly confronting their sin, and receiving their correction in a spirit of humility. (Eph. 4:15-16) I, therefore, pledge to uphold these Christian responsibilities, realizing that I will be able to enjoy the privilege of attending Hagia Sophia Classical Academy only so long as I purpose to maintain this commitment through the amazing grace and according to the mercy of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 3 Adapted from the Honor Code used by Franklin Classical School, Franklin, TN. 4 Written by Matt Whitling of Logos School.
HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY 5 STUDENT HONOR CODE 5 (Grammar Level) - Respect, Order, Unity, Diligence and Honesty 6 through Dignity, Honor, Integrity and Nobility - 1. Love God "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." Mark 12:30 2. Serve Others "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." Philippians 2: Work Diligently "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." Colossians 3:23 4. Obey Authority "Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you." 6 6 HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY - AN INTRODUCTION TO HOUSE RULES - In every home, behavioral expectations and norms are developed in order to promote order, harmony and consistency within the family. These could be called House Rules. In a Christian home, many of these rules might be designed around Scriptural principles and the traditions of Christianity; others may come from family or cultural traditions or simply the preferences of the parents. With this in mind, HSCA has also developed its own set of House Rules. Just as in a family, living by these rules allows us to function with harmony, in an orderly and consistent manner. Please note: The following list of House Rules is not intended to be exhaustive by any means, but only to be used as a list of guidelines or principles of behavior at HSCA. It is not the letter of the law that we ought to be striving for but, instead, it is the spirit of these House Rules that we hope to live by. - HOUSE RULES - BASIC SCHOOL RULES All students should be aware of, and are expected to adhere to, the following list of school rules: 1. Students are expected to cooperate with basic Christian standards of behavior and conversation. 2. There should be no talking back or arguing with teachers or staff. Prompt and cheerful obedience is expected. Requests from the teacher should not have to be repeated. 3. BB guns, pellet guns, firearms, or any other type of projectile- shooting guns, as well as non- folding knives are not allowed on the school grounds or during school activities. (The headmaster may make rare exceptions to this rule, providing he is confident that the item is rendered inoperable and it is stored in the administration office until a designated and supervised time of display. Advance permission of this kind can only be granted by the headmaster.) 4. Pocket knives are allowed for upper Form students but they must be kept folded up and in the pocket unless a utilitarian reason exists to use it as a tool. Any disregard of this rule will result in immediate confiscation of the pocket knife and a loss of the offending student s privilege to carry a pocket knife for the remainder of the school year. In a situation like this, the pocket knife will not be returned. Students of the School of Grammar are not allowed to carry a pocket knife. 5. Students are not to bring laser pointers, radios, personal CD players or any tunes or media widgets to school. By faculty permission, students may use school tape players, CD players, and/or radios, tunes or media widgets to listen to classical music while at school. This is a classical school, therefore, non- classical music is not permitted during school hours unless under the direction of a teacher or the administration. 6. Cell phones are not allowed. If the student must bring one to school, it is to be turned off and kept in the student s book- bag. Cell phones are not to be carried or used while at school unless authorized by administration. 7. Students will be held responsible for damage done to school property, including textbooks. Actual replacement or repair costs will be assessed. Hardback textbooks must be covered with a book cover. 8. Public displays of romantic affection, or actions that appear to be public displays of romantic affection (whether they are, indeed, romantic or are not) are not permitted at school or school activities. 9. Students may not chew gum at school. 10. Students may not write on the whiteboards or chalkboards without permission of the teacher. 11. Backpacks and/or athletic bags must be stored in designated areas.
HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY 7 STUDENT ETIQUETTE WHILE AT SCHOOL The students will be encouraged to show consideration for their teachers and their classmates by personally taking hold of the following standards. Scholars... Will be standing behind their chairs in silence when the bell rings (if the teacher is not present, they may be seated until his arrival). Will stand when faculty or adult visitors enter the room. In our current situation (with open rooms) a faculty member may declare his passing through to be in the hallway. Students, then, will not be expected to stand for that specific person during that specific class period. Students will always stand for visitors. Will return greetings to the teacher and be seated at the teacher's directive. Will speak with appropriate kindness, and with the intent of encouraging one another, never in a manner that displays belittlement, disrespect, contempt or mockery. Will not walk across desk seats or dash across the room to get to their desks. Will not eat or drink in class except during lunchtime, or teacher- supervised meetings, teas or class parties. May carry to class an enclosed, plastic water bottle filled with water- only. (Allowance of this privilege will be at the discretion of each teacher.) May eat a small, non- messy snack between class periods but must dispose of the remains before entering class. Will not disturb or open anything belonging to the teacher (including books or papers) without direct permission from the teacher. Will not prop their feet up on desks. Will not throw any objects (papers, pens, erasers, balls, etc.) while in the classroom. Will not write on desks, walls, textbooks, posters, etc. Will not write on their own bodies or clothing, nor will they write on the bodies or clothing of fellow- students. Will pick up any trash around their desk or table areas before leaving. Will not adjust blinds or open or close windows without permission from the teacher. Will not rearrange desks or tables without permission from the teacher. Will not pass notes nor ask others to pass notes. Will not talk while the teacher is talking and, submitting in trust, will give deference to the authority and wisdom of the teacher if interrupted by the teacher. Will not interrupt other students during class discussion. Will not work on other homework assignments during class (until they have finished with assigned work or are given such permission by a teacher). Will treat all faculty, proctors and student teachers as authoritative representatives of Hagia Sophia Classical Academy. Will demonstrate proper male- female respect towards each other. Here are some examples: Boys will open doors for girls. Boys will allow girls to pass first through an entry/exit. Boys will defer to girls when both find themselves speaking at the same time. Neither boys nor girls will interrupt one another. Girls will graciously allow boys to show them proper respect. Girls will never demand gentlemanly behavior nor take self- serving advantage of such behavior. Girls will verbally thank a boy, when appropriate, for displaying an act of kindness toward her. Boys will verbally thank a girl, when appropriate, for displaying an act of kindness toward him.
8 HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY SCHOOL CLOTHES POLICY Objective: To improve and standardize student appearance at Hagia Sophia Classical Academy. A school clothes policy is but one method that may be employed in order to fulfill one of the many aspects of a holistic classical Christian approach to education. The (necessary) selection of a method does not call into question the legitimacy of other methods that seek to recognize and apply the same principles. That being said: through school clothes, a student is enabled to show respect for his school and course of study, his teachers, fellow students and his own vocation as a student/scholar; through school clothes, a student can come to recognize that education is a cultural endeavor, and not simply an intellectual one; through school clothes, a student can dress in a way that is conducive to the work of an academic nature, with clothing that does not interfere with or distract from that work; through school clothes, a student can resist the drift of cultural and aesthetic relativism; through school clothes, a student is encouraged to understand that one s uniqueness is not revealed by one s dress; through school clothes, a student is encouraged to understand and embrace the invaluable idea of Solempne which, sadly, is all but lost to our post-modern culture. (For more on the meaning of Solempne, please read the article by C.S. Lewis, which follows.) Scope: This policy applies to all students (full-time and part-time). The term UNIFORM applies to specific student clothing that is to be worn to school on a daily basis. Beginning , all uniform clothing must be purchased at HSCA-specified retailers. The Uniform Code for is forthcoming and will be provided within the school year with ample time to make plans and purchasing decisions. Students are expected to abide by the appropriate standard of dress at all times while on the school grounds (this applies to before and after normal school hours as well). The Headmaster must grant any exception to this policy in advance.
HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY 9 MORE ABOUT SOLEMPNE A Preface To Paradise Lost, by C.S. Lewis. This quality will be understood by anyone who really understands the Middle English word solempne. This means something different, but not quite different, from modern English solemn. Like solemn it implies the opposite of what is familiar, free and easy, or ordinary. But unlike solemn it does not suggest gloom, oppression or austerity. The ball in the first act of Romeo and Juliet was a solemnity. The feast at the beginning of Gawain and the Green Knight is very much of a solemnity. A great mass by Mozart or Beethoven is as much a solemnity in its hilarious Gloria as in its poignant crucifixion est. Feasts are, in this sense, more solemn than fasts. Easter is solempne, Good Friday is not. The Solempne is the festal which is also the stately and the ceremonial, the proper occasion for pomp -- and the very fact that pompous is now used only in a bad sense measures the degree to which we have lost the old idea of solemnity. To recover it you must think of a court ball, or a coronation, or a victory march, as these things appear to people who enjoy them; in an age when everyone puts on his oldest clothes to be happy in, you must reawake the simpler state of mind in which people put on gold and scarlet to be happy in. Above all, you must be rid of the hideous idea, fruit of a wide-spread inferiority complex, that pomp, on the proper occasions, has any connection with vanity or self-conceit. A celebrant approaching the altar, a princess led out by a king to dance a minuet, a major-domo preceding the boar s head at a Christmas feast -- all these wear unusual clothes and move with calculated dignity. This does not mean they are vain, but that they are obedient; they are obeying the hoc age which presides over every solemnity. The modern habit of doing ceremonial things unceremoniously is no proof of humility; rather it proves the offender s inability to forget himself in the rite, and his readiness to spoil for everyone else the proper pleasure of ritual.
10 HAGIA SOPHIA CLASSICAL ACADEMY GENERAL DRESS AND APPEARANCE POLICY The purpose of the school dress code is to promote neatness, discipline, a sense of school identity, and to provide an atmosphere of learning free of emphasis on clothing. The enforcement of the dress code is a joint responsibility of the parents, students, and faculty (teachers and administrators). Parent must see that their children leave the house properly attired. The faculty is to see that the students follow the dress code. Appropriateness of dress and make-up is left to the discretion of the faculty. Students attending Hagia Sophia Classical Academy, both full-time and part-time, are expected to comply with the following guidelines for student attire: I. General (for all students) Hagia Sophia Classical Academy is a workplace for students as well as for faculty. Students should dress in such a way as to demonstrate their respect for the school. Therefore, at all times while on the school grounds (before, during and after school hours), or while representing the school elsewhere (outreach guilds, field trips, etc ), students shall: A. Dress neatly: That is, all shirts tucked in, shoes tied, no holes/tears in clothes, clothing appropriately sized for the wearer. B. Be clean. That is, recently washed, hair kempt, older boys to be clean-shaven. Senior boys, only, may have the privilege of growing facial hair provided it is trimmed and neatly kept. C. Be modest. That is, no tops of stretchy, clingy fabric, no tight or below-the-waste pants, no short skirts, short skorts, or short shorts. All skirts and dresses should be longer than two inches (2 ) above the kneecap, please. Hair must be natural in color. No pierced jewelry allowed. Exception: Ladies may wear modest earrings attached to their ear lobes only. Outlandish or distracting clothing or appearance will not be allowed. On an as-needed basis, the Faculty, Headmaster or Rector will determine the definition of outlandish or distracting clothing or appearance. II. Enforcement The school Headmaster and/or other members of the faculty will determine if there is a violation of the Uniform or General Dress Policy, either in fact or attitude. Students not complying with these policies will be required to rectify their appearance as quickly as possible. Cheerful, consistent compliance is expected; grumbling and challenging attitudes will be subject to disciplinary action. III. Special Attire Events/Days a) As the Headmaster determines, events such as P.E. and field trips may call for other clothing options. The headmaster may also schedule special days, such as dress-uniform days, jean days, certain holidays, feast days or Remembrance Week, during which other clothing or costume options are allowed. b) Dialectic and Rhetoric students may wear game jerseys on game days if requested to do so by their coach. (This, of course, assumes the existence of a volunteer parent-coach(es) and a team.) c) The students will have the opportunity to earn a jean day every alternate Thursday of the month. Students have only two requirements to earn a jean day. 1) Every student must be in 100% compliance with the uniform code between the designated jean days. 2) The jean day dress is in compliance with the General guidelines (I. General - A, B & C) listed above. Additional Administrative Guidelines 1) Hats - Unless granted special permission, students are not to wear hats while in the school building. Students who do so may have their hats confiscated and not returned until the last day of school. 2) Coats - Upon entering the building, students must remove their overcoats and hang them up on a coat rack. Coats may not be worn within the school building at any time. See the Uniform Guidelines for allowable warmth attire within the school building.
