1 14 Jesus is A through Z ~M, Part 1~ Man of Sorrows, Master, Mediator All Staff Pre-Class Arrange tables and chairs. Pray for tonight s class. Have music playing. Take attendance. 20 min. REVIEW Write letters A through L on small slips of paper. Have kids take turns drawing a letter out of a hat (bowl, etc.) and remembering as many titles/adjectives that begin with that letter as possible. Review previous lessons. See Jesus is A through Z Review Questions. Ideas: o Toss out candy for correct answers. o Form teams and play Bible baseball. o Form teams and play tic-tac-toe. (A correct answer allows a team to place its X or O. ) o Play musical chairs. If student answers a question correctly, he/she is NOT out. All Staff 20 min. BIBLE MEMORY WORK Students will work on memorizing doctrinal verses. Each student will have his/her own list or book to work from, containing a chart for teachers to initial as students quote the verses one at a time, two at a time, etc. (Teachers: Please read instructions on the Bible memory work charts.) Remind students that there will be prizes for those who pass with a score of 80 percent or better. Remind students that during Bible Memory Work time, everyone must be working! Encourage them to work together to memorize verses, as opposed to distracting each other. Divide the class into four groups: two each for 5- to 7-yearolds and 8- to 10-year-olds, one teacher with each group. To cut down on the confusion and noise, two groups may leave the room to practice verses in another classroom, the hallway, etc.

2 Coloring pages with the 10 Commandments or other Bible verses are available to help occupy visitors (or younger/distracted students) while their classmates are quoting verses. 5 min. RULES & PRAYER Review Power Hour Promises with the students, reminding them of proper behavior during class. Pray together, thanking God for your time together and praying that each person will understand and obey God s Word and grow into a strong Christian. 20 min. BIBLE LESSON Teacher Prep: Read Isaiah 53:3, John 11:1-45, Luke 19:41-44, Matthew 26:36-46, John 18:1-3, Luke 8:23-25, and 1 Timothy 2:5. Pray for anointing. Items Needed: Letter M, Part 1 posterboard; printed words/pictures of Man of Sorrows, Master, and Mediator ( Jesus is Letter M, Part 1, Words-Pics ); Bible. Introduction Show the letter M, Part 1 posterboard. We are learning about Jesus character (who He is) and power (what He does) by exploring His titles and adjectives from A to Z. Today we re going to talk about some of Jesus titles and adjectives that begin with the letter M. Lesson Did Jesus ever cry? (yes) Read Isaiah 53:3 from your Bible. Isaiah prophesied that the Savior would be a Man of Sorrows. What does sorrow mean? (sadness, grief) Here are some times Jesus was sorrowful: Lesson 14 Jesus is ~M, Part 1~ Annette R. 3 Jesus cried when his friend Lazarus died. Why do you think Jesus cried even though He knew He was going to raise Lazarus from the dead? (possible answers: He was sympathizing with Lazarus family and friends who were sad and crying; He was sad that no one realized He could raise Lazarus from the dead) Jesus cried when He was looking over a city He loved, Jerusalem. Why do you think Jesus cried over Jerusalem? (He was sad that most of the people of Jerusalem didn t recognize that He was God and had come to give them peace; He was sad that the city would be destroyed by the Romans in a few years [70 A.D.] with the Temple being burned down and many people hurt and killed) Jesus was very sorrowful when He was praying in the garden of Gethsemane before Judas came to betray Him (hand Him over to be crucified): (show words/picture for Man of Sorrows ) Why was Jesus sorrowful in Gethesmane? (He knew He was going to die soon; even though He was God, He was also man, and He had a human body that was going to go through great pain; He was sad for His disciples because they didn t realize what was about to happen; He was sad that one of His disciples was going to betray Him) Have a student attach the words/picture for Man of Sorrows to the M, Part 1 posterboard. What is a master? (a person with authority over others: a boss, owner, director, controller, ruler, etc.) In the New Testament, people often called Jesus Master. This was a term of respect for a great teacher, which Jesus was. But He s also the boss. Do you remember this story? Read Luke 8:23-25 from your Bible. Lesson 14 Jesus is ~M, Part 1~ Annette R. 4 The disciples knew that Jesus was their boss: they called Him Master. But they were shocked to learn that Jesus could boss the weather too! Have a student attach the words/pictures for Master to the M, Part 1 posterboard. Read 1 Timothy 2:5 from your Bible. How many Gods (capital letter G ) are there? (one) What is a mediator? (a go-between; someone who brings people together, puts things right) Picture it this way: Show words/picture for Mediator. What separates us (keeps us away) from God? (sin; He is holy [without any sin]) Who bridges that big sin gap so that we can get to God? (the Man Christ Jesus) Remember that Jesus was both God and man. What are some things Jesus did that show He is a man? (He was born; He grew, He was tempted; He got hungry, thirsty, and tired; He prayed; He died; etc.) What are some things Jesus did that show He is God? (He knew all things; He did not sin; He healed people; He calmed storms; He forgave sins; He raised His own body from the dead, etc.) The Man Christ Jesus is the Mediator the bridge between us and God. It is His blood that covers our sins, so that we can come near to God. Have a student attach the words/picture for Mediator to the M, Part 1 posterboard. Life Application We don t have to be afraid to approach our holy, sinless God. We know that Jesus shed His blood so our sins can be forgiven. Lesson 14 Jesus is ~M, Part 1~ Annette R. 5 What do we have to do to be forgiven of our sins? (ask [repent]) After you repent, what should you do, if you have not already done so? (be baptized in Jesus name) When you ve repented, what does Jesus want to fill you with? (the Holy Spirit) Let s pray now and ask Jesus to forgive our sins and thank Him for being our Mediator. Lead the kids in prayer response to lesson. 10 min. BIBLE SKILLS Use the Books of the Bible display board to point things out as you ask these questions: What is the first section of the New Testament called? (the Gospels) What does Gospel mean? ( Good News about Jesus, the Savior) The shortest verse in the Bible is found in the fourth Gospel. What is the fourth Gospel? (John) Hand out Bibles. Remind students to handle Bibles carefully and to help younger students find verses. Find John 11:35 in your Bibles. (Have a student read this verse out loud.) Look at the verses around this verse. What is going on that caused Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, to cry? (Lazarus had died; people didn t believe Jesus could raise him from the dead) Turn two chapters over to John 13:13.
