AREA EMERGENCIES Reception centers in Aleppo, Latakia Knaye and Damascus. In the area of emergencies, we are supporting the Syrian population who are suffering because of civil war. We are sending to the Franciscan friars the contributions we receive in order to reduce the problem of hunger and starvation, and to provide displaced persons with dignified accommodation. The funds provided have enabled the operation of a soup kitchen, which every day provides food to thousands of people, and we have helped the Franciscan monasteries to accommodate large numbers of people. The Syrian uprising started with public demonstrations on 15 March 2011, and developed into an insurrection on a national level that turned into civil war in Since the very outset Association pro Terra Sancta has been alongside the civilian population, responding to the emergency by forwarding the many donations it has received and, last September, launching an international humanitarian appeal to implement the call to action of the Custos. In addition to prayer, I ask all those who can to send help. Not commodities, as they can't get in, but the money to buy (if need be even on the black market) whatever is necessary to allow countless families to survive, particularly the poorest ones. Appeal of Fra Pierbattista Pizzaballa Association pro Terra Sancta supports 4 reception centers that are managed by the friars of the Custody of the Holy Land. The shelters accommodate everyone, Christians and Muslims without regard to religious, social or ethnic distinctions. Beneficiaries of the homeless shelters are the internal displaced persons who now find themselves in the project s areas (Governorate of Aleppo, Knaye, Governorate of Latakia and Damascus), with special attention to women, children and the elderly. Based on onsite analysis and data collected by our local collaborators, the beneficiaries that monthly receive our help are: Relief goods distribution: 4,000 people Urgent improvement/reparation works in residences and reception centers: 50 persons in the residences and about 3,000 bed-nights accommodation in the 4 reception centers; Distribution of medicines for about 400 persons and expense allowance for 15 operations/recoveries and post-operative therapies. Hospital The Hope (Al-Rajaa) of Aleppo We are supporting the hospital The Hope of Aleppo, which belongs to the Custody of the Holy Land and is managed by a team of Syrian doctors.

The health and sanitary situation in Aleppo is disastrous. About 50 per cent of the doctors have escaped abroad and several dozen health workers have been executed or tortured. Moreover, most of the local people cannot afford to pay for medical services. The hospital The Hope is not only an important center for reception and treatment of war victims, but is also the only hospital in the area that can offer complex surgical operations. Fighting against many difficulties, such as lack of continuous electricity, staff and space, it has managed to continue its activities, accommodating wounded people of whatever religion and ethnicity, children above all. Despite the terrible conflict over the past few years, and the supply of electricity which is intermittent at best, approximately 100 doctors, nurses and support staff have continued working, providing an essential service for the people of Aleppo. In the hospital there is a General Director; 4 permanent doctors who alternate shifts; about 100 surgeon who are called in rotation when there is the need for operations; 55 nurses; an administrative director, a financial director and 2 accountants. Medical and paramedic staff have been working despite all the difficulties. However, over the past year, the hospital suffered enormous damages and is now in a very precarious condition. Above all, because most of the victims are civilians, displaced and children, who get seriously injured, many of them at the same time. It is impossible to count the victims of the mortars, which cause not only external injuries, but also internal injuries, such as to the stomach, liver and intestine. We are supporting patients through the following activities: Free urgent medical examination; Support for urgent operations and recovery; Medical supplies; Support for medical staff. During 2014, the hospital registered a huge increase in the number of patients treated for war injuries. The massive inflow of patients occurring after attacks often led to the depletion of medicines and pharmaceutical supplies. In addition to the injuries caused by mortars and other weapons, water pollution in some areas of Aleppo in conjunction with the precarious condition of the most of the population led in 2014 to an increasing number of patients treated for gastritis, hepatitis, tuberculosis and malnutrition. Help for the refugees in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon We are engaged in supporting a number of families, especially from Syria and Iraq, in their basic needs caused by war and humanitarian emergencies: paying rent for housing, supporting children in going to school (e. g. school fees and purchase of materials) and assisting in medical expenses.

Thanks to the donations, we have been able to buy relief goods and medicines, so that we are in a position to rapidly respond to the emergencies and the basic needs of the poorest, who are the most severely affected in this situation of conflict. In Egypt we are providing continuous assistance to 40 children and 20 families. In Jordan and Lebanon we are aiding a similar number of Iraqi and Syrian refugees families. Emergency Gaza The high housing density, the difficulties caused by the war of summer 2014 and by the embargo imposed for security reasons, and the continuous tensions have made the Gaza Strip one of the most critical areas in the Middle East. The majority of the inhabitants are living on less than 2 dollars per day and almost 80 per cent depend on the humanitarian aid coming from international organizations and NGOs. The aid program to support Christians in the Gaza Strip is continuing, notably in terms of providing support for the disabled in the only Catholic parish in Gaza. This has allowed the purchase of medicines and medical equipment required for the rehabilitation of 45 severe cases of disability. AREA EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT The Living Stones of Bethlehem For the sixth year in succession, during the Christmas period Association pro Terra Sancta launched a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the population of Bethlehem, especially its most fragile living stones : children, young families and the elderly. The funds collected have been used in collaboration with the Franciscan parish of St. Catherine and the Antonian Charitable Society to support disadvantaged children living in Bethlehem by providing them with home care. In addition, we took care of about 100 families in difficulty and assisted 245 elderly people who have been abandoned by their families. In particular, as part of this initiative we are seeking to guarantee the neediest families assistance with the costs of school attendance for their children, helping 750 students. The aid involves payment of 70% of the amount owed to the school: in this manner we are ensuring the school attendance of the child while at the same time providing encouragement to families, who have to provide the balance of the school fees. EDUCATION IN THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES The Custody of the Holy Land has been active in education since the second half of the 16th century. Through this project carried out in collaboration with the AVSI Foundation, which began in 2011 and concluded in 2014, fourteen schools in the Old City of Jerusalem, Jericho and Bethlehem were supported. Special attention was focused on the poorest and those facing particular difficulties, through the granting of scholarships. The project also included training courses for students, teachers and families. Total beneficiaries: 6,739 students, 1,495 teachers and 784 parents.

JERUSALEM, Stones of Memory In 2014 we continued, thanks to private funds, the preservation and enhancement project in the Old City of Jerusalem. This project is part of a larger program launched by the Custody of the Holy Land aimed at helping the poorest families in Jerusalem. Restoring, preserving and improving the structural conditions of the numerous buildings owned by the Custody has a direct positive impact on the lives of 270 Christian families who have little or no income, helping to safeguard their presence in the Holy Land. Helping these families is a way of supporting the small Christian community in Jerusalem, so that it can remain linked to this Holy City and continue to be a living presence near the Places of Revelation. The project also provided a significant contribution to employment. The various works carried out required the participation of more than 55 workers and technicians, providing them a stable and protected job. In an environment characterized by a high rate of unemployment, a number of youths from the Old City, working alongside expert workers from Bethlehem and Ramallah, had the opportunity to learn a trade and earn an honest wage, helping to keep them well away from the violent and criminal environment that has surrounded them since their birth. MUSIC EDUCATION IN THE HOLY CITY Located in the Old City of Jerusalem, the Magnificat Institute is a place of dialogue and peaceful cohabitation and serves to promote human, social and civic values in the Holy Land. Christians and Muslims of various nationalities and ethnicities learn and practice music together, drawing from their different cultural backgrounds. During the year 2014 the work of the Institute involved: 254 students, ranging from 4 to 25 years of age; 31 music teachers, of various cultural and religious backgrounds; 42 choristers. About 11,500 people, Christians, Jews and Muslims, benefited from events and concerts that were organized by the Magnificat in Israel and Palestine. CYPRUS, crossroads of peoples and cultures Cyprus is a country possessing an incredible wealth of ancient archaeological remains as well as old churches and monasteries. A small Catholic community lives on the island, consisting of those adhering to the Maronite and Latin rites. The Latins are assisted today, as they have been for centuries, by the Franciscan friars of the Custody of the Holy Land. The painful and difficult divide between the Christian Greek Cypriots and the Muslim Turkish Cypriots, in addition to creating suffering among the local people, has had a devastating effect on the immense Christian cultural heritage in the occupied northern part of the island. In 2014 Association pro Terra Sancta continued to support the Christian presence on the island of Cyprus through the different Franciscan parishes which are managing schools

and kindergartens, a home for the elderly and a center that offers assistance and training to foreign immigrants. Thanks to private donors, who supported our project in Cyprus with small donations, during the years we were able to support 2 schools with 950 students, the rest home accommodating 92 elderly and the training center for immigrants. JERICHO: aid to Christians in need Jericho is a small oasis in the desert near the Jordan River, known for the various miracles that Jesus performed there. The Christian community of Jericho is the smallest of all those in the Palestinian Territories, and indeed one of the smallest in the Middle East. It is centered mainly around the Franciscan Parish of the Good Shepherd, where the Franciscan friars of the Custody of the Holy Land are present. The Franciscans operate a number of schools and educational activities, aimed at ensuring a proper education and a secure environment for all children, in particular those coming from the poorest and most disadvantaged families. The project involved 12 volunteers, who alternated in order to offer assistance for a total of 36 months. In addition, the area has a number of different tourist attractions (archaeological and biblical sites, monasteries and desert oases). Collaborating with the Mosaic Centre, we arranged walks in the desert, where in the past thousands of monks were living. AREA MEMORY AND CULTURE TERRA SANCTA MUSEUM Terra Sancta Museum will be the only museum in the world on the roots of Christianity and the preservation of the Holy Places: a permanent exhibit established by the Custody of the Holy Land to shed light on the history of this extraordinary land in which for millennia the destinies of the many peoples living together in the places holy to the three great monotheistic religions have been mysteriously woven together. In 2014 we continued with the works of planning, cataloguing and renovation. The works of restoration and staging will start in The museum will be on a 2,500 square meters area that today is abandoned and needs to be restored. The project is being carried out in collaboration with STUDIUM BIBLICUM FRANCISCA- NUM and a staff of local and international museologists and architects. We will be implementing on-the-job training activities for workers and artisans and a job creation program for local people.

MOUNT OF OLIVES Gethsemane and Dominus Flevit, preserving the past and training the future In 2014 we carried out preservation works in the Church of All Nations in Gethsemane, thanks to donations by public and private supporters. The Church of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives, also known as the Church of All Nations, is the place that commemorates the beginning of the Passion of Christ; it welcomes on average about 5,000 visitors each day, making it one of the most highly visited places in all of the Holy Land. In order to be able to preserve one of the most important monumental and spiritual areas in Jerusalem, it was necessary to carry out a restoration of the roof and the mosaics, both those in the interior and on the external facade, which had been heavily damaged. In addition, during the project we carried out a training course for young Palestinians where they learned restoration and cultural activities. We trained six young students from East Jerusalem through a 14-month course given by local experts and collaborators from the Mosaic Center Jericho. In addition, we involved more than 2,000 young students of Jerusalem s schools, promoting activities and visits to the Church. Also on the Mount of Olives, in 2014 we started renovation and preservation works at the Church of Dominus Flevit, with a special attention to the restoration of mosaics. A mix of public and private contribution has made these works possible. The project will involve six young East Jerusalemites, who will join on-the-job training activities thanks to the collaboration with the Mosaic Centre Jericho, our stable partner in the West Bank. SABASTIYA, ARCHAEOLOGY FOR DEVELOPMENT In 2014 we continued the safeguarding, restoration and enhancement of the archaeological, artistic and cultural heritage of Sabastiya. Sabastiya is a town founded by Herod the Great and where during the Byzantine period a church was built in memory of the burial of John the Baptist. We have renovated several buildings to be used for social activities and to provide facilities for tourists. We opened 4 new rooms in the guest house. In addition, we arranged tourist visits to the archaeological sites, the city and the rest of the Samaria, with the involvement of local youths who had been previously trained by us. We supported during 2014: 42 youths who participated in training activities for welcoming visitors, including an Italian language course. 180 children who participated in artistic workshops during summer camps. 70 craftsmen and laborers who were engaged in renovating the site. 5 women who participated in activities to produce local products. 12,500 tourists and pilgrims who were able to enjoy the artistic and natural beauty of the place.

BETHANY, preservation and development In 2014 we started activities to preserve and enhance the important archaeological site and the Basilica of Bethany, the city that commemorates the resurrection of Lazarus by Jesus. We carried out research in order to evaluate the works needed on this site, which is now abandoned and closed. The final goal is to open this site again and use it to reintroduce tourism in Bethany, promoting local development. Our work will focus on the preservation and enhancement of the historical center, with a particular attention to the Franciscan Monastery. It is a complex and long-term project, which will see the development of the following activities in different steps: excavation and historical research; preservation of ancient ruins from several periods; enhancement of the area; offering a more suitable and durable product to pilgrims and visitors; taking care of social, educational and cultural aspects with special attention to the local population; planning of economic development that will be compatible with historical preservation. Our partners in the project are Al Quds University, which has its most important installation in the area, the local municipality and a cooperative of local women. During 2014 the works involved 2 professors of Al Quds University, 60 young students of the faculty of archaeology and 15 women, who were working to prepare lunches and dinners for tourists and groups of supporters visiting the city with the volunteers of ATS. Books, Bridges of Peace A series of initiatives was also promoted in 2014 to enhance the library heritage of the Franciscan libraries in Jerusalem (the library of St. Saviour's Monastery and that of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum). The project is being carried out with the collaboration of CRELEB the European Research Center on Books Publishing and Libraries at the Catholic University of Milan. Cataloguing and research activities based on ancient sources have continued, with the objective of enhancing and making accessible this heritage, ensuring that it will continue to represent for future generations a tool for increasing knowledge, for dialogue, and for peace. With some young researchers, who were in the city as volunteers and coordinated by the director of the libraries, we were able to classify 57 ancient manuscripts from different libraries and 90 incunabula printed in the 5 th and 6 th centuries. The works involved 15 youths.

St. Francis of Assisi. HUMAN RESOURCES Association pro Terra Sancta is able to operate effectively thanks to a staff of collaborators and consultants as well as numerous volunteers, divided between our offices in Jerusalem and Milan. Our staff in 2014 consisted of: 1 Administrator 4 Project Coordinators in Jerusalem 1 Person in charge of social projects in Bethlehem 4 full-time collaborators in Milan 12 consultants An increasingly important role in our operations is being played by our volunteers, who in different ways have offered their professional skills, both directly at the Holy Places and from other countries. Apart from their continually increasing number, it is interesting to note their professional qualifications. 51 qualified volunteers of all ages, including archaeologists, communications experts, restorers and educators. 9 volunteer translators for our news and communications, published online in 5 languages. 79% have provided their services in the Holy Land. 21% have made their contribution from their home country (Italy, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal). Average length of stay in the Holy Land: 3 months Thanks to the friendship with one of our collaborators in Jerusalem, the Association Romano Gelmini, created and 2005 and subsequently recognized as a nonprofit organization, is now assisting the Custody of the Holy Land and other Christian entities in the Holy Land. In 2014 it organized working visits with groups of volunteers (ten per group on average) three times in the spring and four in the autumn. For two weeks, each of the participants provides his or her energy and skill to deal directly with the particular needs of the moment. Their contribution in support of our projects has been of considerable importance.
