1 2017 ELCA SOUTHEASTERN SYNOD ASSEMBLY May 26-28, 2017 Chattanooga Convention Center Chattanooga, TN WORKSHOPS PRE-ASSEMBLY WORKSHOPS Friday, May 26 9:00-11:00 AM Before the Flood by National Geographic Meeting Room E If you could know the truth about the threat of climate change would you want to know? Before the Flood, presented by National Geographic, features Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. He goes on expeditions with scientists uncovering the reality of climate change and meets with political leaders fighting against inaction. He also discovers a calculated disinformation campaign orchestrated by powerful special interests working to confuse the public about the urgency of the growing climate crisis. With unprecedented access to thought leaders around the world, DiCaprio searches for hope in a rising tide of catastrophic news. And he does find hope. Led by Mr. David Hrivnak, MBA and Engineer PE, member of Holy Trinity, Nashville, TN Boundary Training for Rostered Ministers (Pastors and Deacons Only) Meeting Room 12 Please join Pastor Beth Kearney for a candid conversation on the importance of healthy professional boundaries that are imperative for you as a rostered minister in the ELCA and for those you serve. All rostered ministers currently serving in a call are expected to complete this training once every three years. Rostered ministers who are currently on leave from call or on the retired roster and who wish to be open to serving in the future are also expected to complete this training. Led by the Rev. Elizabeth (Beth) Kearney, Assistant to the Bishop, ELCA North Carolina Synod A-10

2 Building Community in the Digital Age Marriott Plaza C 500 years ago, Gutenberg s moveable type revolutionized how we communicate and made possible the spread of Martin Luther s reformation ideas. Once again we find ourselves in the middle of a communications revolution the ways that we talk to each other, share information and build communities, are changing rapidly. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all the rest of our social media have made it possible for ideas to travel around the world in record time. Adapting to this changing landscape is both a challenge and an opportunity for leaders in ministry. How can we use online tools to help people develop meaningful and lasting connections and relationships? How can we help the voice of faith to rise above the all noise? Participants will consider how to develop a strategy that uses both new and old tools to share the good news, share the mission of our congregations, and connect to our community and the world. Led by the Rev. David Hansen, pastor of Joy! Lutheran Church, The Woodlands, TX Learning & Living Justice: Examining Racism and Moving Forward Together in Christ Meeting Room 3 With race being such an important issue in our post-2016 election reality, and the ELCA calling us Forward Together in Christ, are you left wondering what follows cultural competency and traditional "diversity" workshops? Perhaps you want to implement high impact justice practices into your personal and social ways of being? This workshop introduces assembly-goers to the methodologies and justice role taking exercises of the week-long Learning and Living Justice Laboratory project. Be prepared for interactive exercises designed to offer a foretaste of justice activism and anti-racist witness as we practice Be-ing together in more deeply engaged ways. Led by Ms. Andrea Green, PhD, Georgia Gwinnett College, and Resident Theologian, Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta, and Mr. Michael Foust, LCSW, Director of Education at Families First, and Racial and Sociomoral Justice Trainer, Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta A-11

3 WORKSHOP SESSION 1 Friday, May 26, :30-6:00 PM Circle of Welcome Welcoming Congregations: Two New Initiatives for Congregational Engagement with Refugees and Migrants Meeting Room E Historically Lutherans migrated to the United States and have welcomed refugees and newcomers into the country. With 65 million people on the move in the world today congregational engagement with migrants and refugees is more important than ever before. AMMPARO was adopted at the 2016 ELCA Churchwide Assembly as an initiative to accompany migrant minors for protection, advocacy, representation and opportunities. The Circle of Welcome is an initiative that connects Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service with Lutheran Services of Georgia and local congregations. Through the Circle of Welcome congregations are called to engage with refugees, be that with newly arrived refugees or refugees that have already been in the United States for several months. Come to this workshop to learn how your congregation in any location in the Southeastern Synod can join one or two of these new, welcoming initiatives and accompany refugees and migrants as friends and neighbors, investing in their well-being, accepting them as new brothers and sisters, and seeing them as assets in the community. Led by the Rev. John Moeller, CEO, Lutheran Services of Georgia; Rev. Kevin Jacobson, Assistant Director for Outreach, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service; Deacon Melanie Johnson, Program Manager for Community Engagement, Lutheran Services of Georgia; and Ms. Mary Campbell, Director for AMMPARO, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Exploring the Occasional Services Meeting Room 12 At certain times, the worship of the Christian assembly extends beyond primary gatherings around word and sacrament, marking occasions in human life and the life of the church. Come explore in greater depth major occasions such as weddings, funerals, and healing, as well as other rites around assembly worship. The dimensions of pastoral care, preaching, and assembly song will be included as we unpack these important rites in the life of the church. Led by the Rev. Kevin L. Strickland, Assistant to the Presiding Bishop/Executive for Worship Faith and Public Life Meeting Room 3 Come and meet the Southeastern Synod s new Advocacy Policy Council and hear about what is going on in your state and the exciting plans mapped out for the next year as we move forward with our ready benches and connect congregational advocacy teams across 4 states to create positive change in both state and national public policy. Mary Campbell with ELCA AMMPARO will also be joining us to talk about 'Welcoming Congregations' and the 'Guardian Angels' programs. Whether you are already involved in advocacy or just curious, come and see. Led by Mr. Hilton Austin Jr, Advocacy Director; members of the Southeastern Synod Advocacy Policy Council; and Ms. Mary Campbell, Director for AMMPARO, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America A-12

4 Gathering for Spouses of Rostered Ministers Meeting Room 19 This workshop is an informal gathering for spouses or future spouses of current or retired rostered leaders of the ELCA. Harry Tedrow, pastor, Celebration of Grace, Canton, GA Good News in the Digital Age Marriott Plaza Room C Keeping up with how people communicate feels like learning a foreign language: Should you tweet or should you snap?
