2 CHURCH COVENANT What experience defines our spiritual fellowship and covenant relationship? Congregation: Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus as our Savior and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ. What is the bond of our union? Congregation: We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; What are our privileges and duties in this Church? Congregation: To strive for the advancement of this Church in knowledge and holiness; To give it a place in our affections, prayers, and services, above every organization of human origin; To sustain its worships, ordinances, discipline, and doctrine; What vows do we make as stewards of God's gifts of money, time, and talent? Congregation: To contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prospered us, toward its expenses for the support of a faithful and evangelical ministry among us, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel throughout the world. To what lifestyle and conversation are we pledged? Congregation: In case of difference of opinion in the church, we will strive to avoid a contentious spirit; and if we cannot unanimously agree, we will cheerfully recognize the right of the majority to govern. We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to study diligently the Word of God, to religiously educate our children. To seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintance; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be kind and just to those in our employ and faithful in the service we promise others, endeavoring in the purity of heart and good will toward all men exemplify and commend our holy faith; Praying Always for Our Church Family Askew, Sister Mary Baskerville, Brother Rufus Brown, Sister Elsie Brown, Sister Sophia Casper-Adams, Sister Cynthia Chapman, Sister Inez Clark, Evangelist Dorothy Cuffee, Sister Dorothy Daniels, Brother Mack Elliott, Sister Linda Elliott, Sister Lucille Flythe, Brother David Flythe, Sister Rosa Griffin, Brother Darnell Griffin, Rev. 3 Are you worried about your mental sharpness? Or maybe that of a loved one s? Mild forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging. If you have trouble remembering someone's name but it comes to you later, that's not a serious memory problem. But if memory problems are seriously affecting your daily life, they could be early signs of Alzheimer's disease. 1. Memory Loss: This is the most common symptom. Do you easily forget information you just learned? Do you lose track of important dates, names, and events? Do you forget big things even happened? Do you ask for the same information over and over? 2. Trouble Planning and Problem Solving: Do you have trouble making plans and sticking to them? Is it tricky to follow a recipe, even one you ve used many times? Is it hard to concentrate on detailed tasks, especially if they involve numbers? For example, can you keep track of your bills and balance your checkbook? 3. Daily Tasks are a Challenge: Even familiar things can become hard. Do you have trouble driving to a location you go to often? Can you complete an ordinary task at work? Do you forget the rules of your favorite game? 4. Times and places are confusing: Can you fully grasp something that s not happening right now? Are you disoriented? Do you get lost easily? Do you forget where you are? Do you remember how you got there? 5. Changes in Vision: Is it harder to read the words on the page? Do you have trouble judging distance? Can you tell colors apart? This is important because it can affect your driving. 6. Words and conversations are frustrating: Vocabulary becomes hard. Can you find the right word you re looking for? Or do you call things by the wrong name? Do you suddenly stop in the middle of a discussion because you don t know what to say? Do you keep repeating yourself? 7. You Lose Things: Everyone misplaces things from time to time, but can you retrace your steps to find them again? Do you put things in unusual places, like your watch in the refrigerator? Do you accuse people of taking things? 8. Lapse in Judgment: Have you made poor decisions lately? Do you make mistakes with money, like giving it away when you normally wouldn t? Do you dress for the wrong weather? 9. Social Withdrawal: Are you scaling back on projects at work? Are you less involved with your favorite hobbies? Do you lack motivation? Do you find yourself watching television or sleeping more than usual? 10. Mood Changes: Do you get upset more easily? Do you feel depressed, scared, or anxious? Are you suspicious of people? Seeing Your Doctor: If you notice these signs, talk with your doctor. The sooner you know, the better. Starting treatment may help relieve symptoms and keep you independent longer. (Except from What is our pledge to one another? Congregation: We further engage to watch over, to pray for, to exhort and stir up each other unto every good work; to guard each other's reputation; not needlessly exposing the infirmities of others; to participate in each other's joys and with tender sympathy, bear one another's burdens and sorrows. What tasks do we assume as the people of God? Congregation: To cultivate Christian courtesy; to be slow to give or take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, being mindful of the rules of the Savior in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, to secure it without delay; And through life, amid evil report, and good report, to seek to live to the glory of God, Who hath called us out of the darkness into His marvelous light; What should we do if we leave this community? Congregation: We moreover engage, that when we remove from this place, we will as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God's Word. What benediction concludes our covenant? Congregation: May the God of peace who brought again from the dead, the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant even our Lord Jesus, make us perfect in every good thing to do God's will, working in us that which is well pleasing in God's sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever, AMEN. 5 A Fresh Commitment to God, Church and Ministry The Year of Supernatural Exploits Installation Services and Banquet for Pastor-Elect, Elder A. Paul Paige Pre-Installation Services Monday, April 9, PM - Guest Church Wednesday, April 11, PM Guest: Third Baptist Church Portsmouth, VA Pastor Joseph A. Fleming Installation Banquet Friday, April 13, PM The Edmonds Center 2714 Frederick Blvd, Portsmouth, VA Ticket Donation: $45.00 Per Ticket Installation Service: Liturgical Moment Installation Service Sunday, April 15, PM Guest: Union Baptist Missionary Church, Suffolk, VA Bishop C. V. Russell, Jr. Pastor The Pastoral Installation is a worship celebration of the union between a new pastor and a congregation. Like a wedding, the installation becomes a historical marker of the consummation of the covenant between pastor and people. Although the origin of this ritual practice cannot be assigned a specific date, the affirmation and recognition of spiritual leadership (priestly, pastoral, or diakonos) to service the needs of the faith community has biblical precedence in the Judeo-Christian tradition (Numbers 8:5-22; Acts 6:1-7, 13:11-13, Galatians 2:9-10). Paul and Barnabas were set apart by the Holy Spirit and the elders in the church at Antioch laid hands on them and sent them off (Acts 13:1-4). A Pastoral Installation is one of the rich cultural paradigms found among most African American congregational churches. The ritual as practiced is a three-fold event: biblical, communal, and mystical. The Bible is central to the ethos of the ceremony. Many of the elements of the installation ceremony, i.e., consecration, prayer, scriptures, etc., are steeped in biblical lore. Second, it is a communal event celebrated within the context of the life of the congregation and the community. Persons from religious, political, and business sectors are invited to participate in the celebration of the new ministry of pastor and people. Finally, it is a mystical event in that the ritual ceremony recognizes and affirms not only the history of God s involvement in salvation history, but also in the life of the congregation both now and in the future. The ceremony is usually done with great pageantry, like most weddings, because it is done with the expectancy that the pastor and church will work together in Kingdom building for many years. The good news in the church, is the call of a pastor, and the installation ceremony are expressions of grace. The Apostle Paul says: But, each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ s gift (verse 7). Grace, charis in the Greek, is the idea of undeserved favor, freely given to each one who is in the body of Christ. As each church celebrates the installation of a new pastor, they are celebrating a gift of grace. New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville), Let us thank God and let s be ever so prayerfully for His Gift, His Mercy, His Grace and His Love during this period of installation. All are Invited!
