Mission Statement Partnering with parents in leading kids to walk in the light. Why Small Groups? KBF small groups were designed for the purpose of relationship-building. We want the kids to look forward to coming back to church each Sunday because there are other kids and leaders there who love them and want to teach them about Christ. The minutes that a KBF leader spends with their small group can be a very impactful time. Curriculum The Gospel Project: Old Testament (Part 1) **Throughout the lesson, small group leaders should think about/write down questions or comments that may challenge their small group afterward. Memorization This year, we are challenging our kids, parents, and small group leaders to memorize selected Bible verses. Your role is to partner with the parents in memorizing the passages right along with the kids in your small group, so you can review with them. Also take time to remind the kids why we memorize. See the sheet called Why Memorize Scripture? Your role will also be to listen to the kids recite the passages to you and put a check mark on the memory verse tracker for that child and verse. Attendance Check that all your kids have nametags each week. If they don t, they most likely did not check in. Please mark P on your attendance form for these kids. When you send out a postcard, mark C on the sheet. Please clip these on the outside of your folder. Dismissal While the 3 rd -5 th graders are dismissed at 10:30, the 1 st -2 nd graders must be released to a parent. Parents should be reminded to pick their kids up by 10:35. After 10:35, 2 nd graders not yet picked up can go into the 1 st grade room to wait with some leaders for the parents. Postcards Postcards are a great way to stay in touch with your kids. Please send a card when the kids have birthdays, are sick, or haven t shown up for two weeks in a row. If you paperclip the cards to the outside of your folder, we will be happy to affix postage and send them out for you. Just clip them onto the outside of your folder or drop them in the CM drop-box.

3 Sunday Schedule: Arrival Be in the CMC (children s ministry center) by 9:15 every Sunday morning, ready to 9:15-9:30 welcome the kids and their parents. Wear your name tag, and pick up your folder in the bin on the counter. When visitors come, ask the parent to fill out a white registration sheet. Connect the child to a kid their age and a KBF leader for their grade. Opening Stand among the kids in the CMC and actively participate in the singing. Focus the 9:28-9:43 kids attention on what is going on up front. Two leaders should never sit by each other but should be spread out among the kids. Video A short video will be played for the large group to introduce the lesson. After the 9:43-9:45 video is over, the 1 st /2 nd graders are dismissed for their lesson time. Lesson Be a good example to the kids by following along in your Bible and focusing on the 9:45-10:15 teacher. When you notice kids being distracted, gently remind them to focus on the lesson. If the behavior continues, reposition the kids. During the lesson, write down good discussion questions to ask your small group afterward. Small Groups 1. Move to your small group location. Start off by taking attendance and registering 10:15-10:30 any new visitors (if they weren t already registered). Paperclip the registration form on the outside of your folder. 2. Get to know the kids by going around and asking them questions about themselves like favorite ice cream or favorite pet or what they did over the vacation, etc. (you answer the questions, too). 3. Take prayer requests and pray with the children (model praise and thanksgiving as well). 4. Use the questions and topics you wrote down from the lesson to guide discussion to apply the lesson to the children s life. Share your own life and struggles with them where appropriate. First and second graders may sometimes have a craft. 5. Review the memory verse and have children recite them. Verses can also be recited before the opening worship time or any other time leaders are available. Closing At 10:30, wait for the kids parents to pick them up (1 st /2 nd ) or dismiss them to meet 10:30 their parents (3 rd, 4 th, 5 th ). Never leave another leader alone with a child. 4 5 Ways to be an Effective KBF Leader 1. Draw near to God. In Psalm 73:23 Asaph says, "But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds." Are you drawing near to him in the Word, in prayer, in worship? Your impact on and relationship with the kids will be a direct result of your fellowship with the Lord. Keep Him your priority! 2. Pray for your kids. Sunday mornings are a great time to pray for and with your kids. But, take time in your week to pray for them, and let them know it! Send them a card or give a quick phone call. Along with their parents, you can model how important and effective prayer is. 3. Be on time. To say the least, things are rushed on Sunday mornings. For parents with kids, many times to just get all the kids here in one piece with their clothes on, is a huge success! But, I m asking you to be ready to greet the kids by 9:15 on Sunday mornings. Being here when the kids arrive speaks volumes about how much you value them. And, we are making a commitment to parents to be there when their kids arrive. 4. Model how you worship to the kids. Singing is just one form of worship, but it is a very visible form that the kids can see and hear. Please show them how important singing praises to the Lord is by being in the CMC at 9:28 and participating in worship with them. And, it s okay for you to do the hand motions too. 5. Stay in touch with the kids. I know this is difficult to do, especially when there are a thousand other responsibilities we have. Try to make contact at least once a month with your kids, whether it be a postcard, phone call, or showing up to a game or play. I m sure you ve heard the saying, Kids won t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Make a point to talk with them anywhere outside the classroom on Sundays, even in the hallways.

6 WHY MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE? Memorizing helps us hide God s Word in our hearts. Deuteronomy 6:6: "These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Deuteronomy 11:18: "Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads." Psalm 119:11: I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. The Bible teaches us how to control our thoughts. Philippians 4:8: "...whatever is true, whatever noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things" The Bible teaches us how to obey. Joshua 1:8: "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." Deuteronomy 30:14 "...the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it." Psalm 37:31: "The law of God is in his heart; his feet do not slip." Psalm 119:11 "I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You." James 1:22: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. The Bible teaches us that we are Christ s disciples. Therefore, we are to teach other about Jesus. Matthew 28:16-20 : Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." The Bible prepares us for spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:17 "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God." The Bible gives us a better understanding of the character of God. Psalm 119:99: "I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on Your statutes." The Bible teaches us how to be a stronger witness for Jesus. Colossians 3:16: "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom." We do not always carry our Bibles with us. Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations where we wish we knew the appropriate verse to use. When we memorize Scripture, God works in our hearts and brings to mind the appropriate verses at the times when we need them. Psalm 16:7: "Even at night my heart instructs me." The Bible teaches us what to pray for and how to pray. Ephesians 6:17-18: "Take...the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests." The Bible teaches us how to be bold Christians; living for Christ in spite of persecution. Psalm 138:3: When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted. Hebrews 4:16: Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. The Bible teaches us how to communicate with others. Our words are a reflection of our thoughts. Matthew 12:34: "For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. Ephesians 4:29: Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
