Faith Presbyterian Church Faith Family News Monthly Newsletter Pastor s Ponderings By Chris Lenocker As I am writing this article for the newsletter I am listening to Handel s Messiah and remembering the rich traditions surrounding my experience of this inspirational piece of music and how it draws me to remembrances of my service to the church. I was recalling that the first time I sang a piece from Messiah I was in the Junior High Glee Club and we were singing with a local high school choir we had about 15 in our glee club and the high school had about 80. That was a just a couple of years ago. What have your remembrances been this year? As you looked back, what came to mind? Even as I relish the experiences of the past years, I am drawn to look forward to how the wonderful text of Messiah is playing out in our world today and what kind of memories we are creating in this season of the life of the church. The narrative of Messiah retells the story of God s salvation history and the revealing of the very character of God as manifest in Jesus. We look back to see who God is and who we are to be. We are a people with a defined past, a blessed presence and a future full of hope and expectation. As we begin a new calendar year our lives are inevitably turned to look to the future and to make decisions about that future. How involved is God in our looking to the future? Can we see God s comfort in our future? Can we see the glory of the Lord in our future? Can we hear the very mouth of the Lord speaking to us? Do we feel like people for whom a child is born? What is our reaction when nations so furiously rage together? Do we know that our redeemer lives? Do JANUARY 2015 we wait for the mystery that is the trumpet calling us all to be together with God? Do we know the Lamb that is worthy of our worship? We are still writing our story some just have fewer pages to fill than others. What will we write? When people hear the narrative of our lives will they hear God s voice in our pages? When we are faced with broken relationships in our families or our communities, will God s voice be heard? When we find our health failing or that of a neighbor or dear friend will we be able to put God in the center of that part of our story? Think of all the ways in which God can be born again and again in our lives. How God can be in every experience and every action. As change happens all around us, we can find solid ground in our future by trusting in the God who has from the beginning of time loved/loves us. Each day of this new year is an opportunity to rest in the promises of God and to react to all of life s blessings and challenges with the knowledge that God is with us, calling us into a new and different way of being the Body of Christ within our community and beyond. Let us be the blessing that God intends us to be, even as God has blessed us. The world is broken today and is in the midst of a reclamation process directed by God. I am sure that when Handel wrote Messiah he could have said similar things about the world in which he lived. His response was to tell the world about God through music. Let us tell the world about God through the stories of our lives lived for Christ. May this be a year that truly finds God at the center of each of our lives and all our lives. Happy New Year! Shalom, Chris Volume XXI Number 1

SERMONS AND SCRIPTURE READINGS January 4 Never Apart Psalm 147:12-20, Ephesians 1:3-14 What would it be like to live apart from God? What blessings would be missing and what would give direction to our lives? January 11 Out of Chaos Genesis 1:1-5, Acts 19:1-7 There is something powerful about the reparative nature of God s coming into life. Out of the chaos of creation God makes things new and orders them. Out of baptism God orders lives into wholeness and abundance. January 18 All In! Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18; 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 To be a follower of Jesus one must give all of one s self in obedience. Discipleship shows itself in every decision and action. January 25 God s Seal of Approval Psalm 62:5-12, Mark 1:14-20 In a world of such abundance, every day is filled with decision, choices. How different would our decisions be if God stamped one choice with his approval? Would we be willing to follow? NOTE THESE IMPORTANT DATES: January 1 and 2. Office is closed January :30 pm. 3 Dear Friends at Faith, One of the things I thank God for is you and your interest and your involvement in our ministry. Thank you so much for your interest in us, for your prayers, and for your support! This month I will share with you a translation decision the Zapotec team made. On the mountain with the burning bush, God tells his name to Moses, a name that is a form of the verb to be. The traditional way to write God s name is Jehovah. Now most translations are writing it LORD. So we had to decide how to write this name as we re translating the Old Testament, and it occurs 7666 times in the Spanish translation. We talked about it and we talked about the various options God Señor (use Spanish word of Lord) Lord (use the Zapotec phrase we used to translate Lord in the New Testament) LORD (using all caps like many translations that are attempting to say it s different from Lord of the NT). Jehová (use the Spanish word for Jehovah) Some Zapotec phrase based on the verb to be. After studying a bit, they all decided to go with option number 6 and they chose the phrase Xaa Tubka Nak the One who Always Is. So, Exodus 3:14-15 comes out like this (The literal translation is in blue): 14 Nu lee Dios mkeb nzhé: and focus God replied said Na nak Xaa Tubka Nak. Nu yé lu lo re xaa, I am He lo gu". 15 to you Always Is "Lee Xaa Tubka Nak mxaal na and say you to all people focus He Always Is Nu noka nzhé Dios lo Ches: Yé lu lo re xaa and also said God to Moses Always Is of me Israel: say you to all people Israel "Lee Dios, Xaa Tubka Nak, cheen re xey focus God He sent be, Xtios Abraham, all grandparents our God-of Abraham Xtios Chak, nu Xtios Kob, mxaal na lo re gu. God-of Isaac and God-of Jacob sent Kwaane nak kwaan le This is what na tira me to all you lo re xtii gu. name mine always to all generations you Putting it all together, it reads like this: God replied and said: I am He who Always Is. You should say to all the people: He who Always Is sent me to you. And God also said to Moses: Say to the people of Israel: God, the One who Always Is, the God of our ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob sent me to you. This is what my name will be to you for all your generations. In the NIV: 14 God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you. 15 God also said to Moses, Say to the Israelites, The Lord, the God of your fathers the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob has sent me to you. This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation. The Zapotecs really like God s name because it speaks to them. They use this in talking about him to others and in talking to him in prayer. Think about what God s name means to you. Thank you again for helping the Zapotecs get God s Word in their language. 4 The Mustard Seed Board starts January 4, 2015 by David Helkenn For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. Matt 17:20: NRSV So, how to put faith into practice? So many questions arise! - How can I express my love for God and neighbor? - How can I connect Sunday worship service to weekday community service? - I could use some help, but who do I ask and how can I get it? - I feel a desire to help, but I don't know the who, what, when, where, or how? To answer these questions and to move forward, one needs to know both "Who needs help?" and "How can I help?" It may be that you need some shopping done. You may be able to do some yard work or drive someone to a medical appointment. You may need a ride to some church activity. There are so many other small things people need and do as a part of daily living. But how do we connect the people with needs with people who can help? That's where the Mustard Seed Board of the Mission Committee comes in. It is the place where the needs and resources of young families, seniors, college students, or anyone else come together. It is the exchange where people connect. It is where the rubber of love meets the road of need! Starting Sunday, January 4, after worship, members of the Mission Committee will be available to answer your questions and to explain the mechanics of how the Mustard Seed Board works. In sum, both offers of help and requests for assistance are written on cards, which a committee member will review to make the connection. This is an experiment and will continue as long as there is interest. If you d like to help too, talk to Joe Huffaker, David Helkenn, Carolyn Taxer, Ann Ruppert, or Barbara Williams. 5 By Kathie Baldwin, Preschool Director Like everywhere else the Preschool is a busy place in December. Young children are learning how to give of their time to make a simple gift for their parents. They are very excited to give the gift they have made. Frequently they are so excited they tell their parents what the gift is before it can be opened. The Parent Group rented a snow making machine to use on the playground with the children. This was not icy snow but soft puffy flakes that melted on contact. The children delighted in the experience. Some were dashing through the snow on tricycles and others were sweeping, raking, and dancing. The toddler class was playing office using computer keyboards, paper, pencils, and clipboards in their classroom. The teachers decided to take them on a mini field trip up to the church office to visit Lou. The children each drew a picture and Miss Lou showed them how to make a copy of their picture using the big copy machine. They had a meeting in the conference room around the big table. I had the privilege of reading Jesus Christmas Party to each class. This is the nativity told from the perspective of the innkeeper, a grumpy innkeeper. Then each child was given a small present to unwrap and place the item (a piece of the nativity) in the stable. The children and staff of the preschool wish you a Blessed Christmas! 5

Children, Youth, Family Ministries Cara Ann Maeda In Sunday School, all of the children have been combined for the Advent and Christmas season. On the first Sunday of Advent, each child made an Advent wreath out of toilet paper rolls and paper. All of them were beautiful! The weeks following, we kept to the weekly theme of Peace, Joy, and Love. The children made Nativity placemats that will be given to others and they made a Joy door-hanger to take home. We also had a Jesus Party and on the last Sunday, hosted a Happy Birthday Jesus Party for the congregation after worship. What a joy it is to celebrate Jesus glorious birth! 7 PARENTS DAY OUT On December 13th, Faith Development and Nurture Committee sponsored a Parent s Day Out event to support families from our congregation, preschool, and committee. We had 13 children attend and I am extremely happy to report that it was a smooth and FUN day! All of the children listened well and the volunteers were so attentive to the children! Thank you to our volunteers: Steve and Bree Wood, Michelle Crownhart, Sarah Scardino, Barbara Reisweber, Kevin Maeda! And thank you to our wonderful food prep people: Cynthia Hatfield, Lois Gage, and Lolita Sugg. Let us continue to seek the Lord as we enter 2015 and let us step back and be amazed at what is done in and through us! Blessings 7

By Cara Ann Maeda Thank you for a great semester! We learned so much and tried new things! At the end of the semester, we did A HOT DOG STAND on the last day of classes. We had about 85 people come to visit us on the church corner. It is a joy serving our community!! A COLLEGE MINISTRY LEADERS GATHERING with lunch, worship music, and a devotional led by Joe Priola from CRU. And wrapped up BEACON for the winter break. We ended well and celebrated the many relationships built over this past semester! Let us praise the Lord together for all that has happened and let us continue to look to the Lord for guidance as we prepare for what is to come. 8

THANK YOU FROM THE COLLEGE MINISTRY GROUPS THAT MEET AT FAITH: Dear Cara Ann and All Brothers and Sisters in Faith Presbyterian Church of San Diego, We the SDSU Chinese Christian Fellowship would like to express our tremendous gratitude to your continued support over the last several years. With such support, many Chinese-speaking students and scholars were able to come to the space you have provided, to study the Bible, to learn God's word, to accept Jesus Christ as their savior, and to have their life transformed in the Lord... All these changes and blessings in people's lives become possible with your support in terms of space, prayer, care, and many other great things! As the Christmas and New Year are drawing near, we also would like to send you our Blessings, The SDSU Chinese Christian Fellowship We thank Faith for the availability and usage of this past semester---we have seen over 30 commitments to Christ at Faith through SDSU students in our ministry. In the midst of IV being derecognized from SDSU the church has truly been a sanctuary for us and a missional location. Thank you so much for all of your support for the kingdom! -Joe Priola, CRU UPCOMING EVENTS: January Hour Prayer Room in room 1 Led by InterVarsity January 25 BEACON starts 9

UPDATE FROM YOUR SESSION Currently your Session is working on developing a budget for the church for All committee chairs have submitted their best assessment of what will be needed to continue all of the programs we currently have in place. The pledges that were received from our members have been calculated and that expected income has been compared with the anticipated expenses. Unfortunately, the income is more than $100,000 less than the anticipated expenses. Obviously this creates a challenge. At present, we have only received pledges from 77 of our usual 83 pledging families and there is still a possibility of more people submitting their pledge soon. However, it is doubtful that will completely make up the difference, but it will help. There is also a possibility that some members will be able to stretch deeper and give more, and that would certainly be a blessing. The Session agreed to operate in January using the same amounts that we have in 2014, but by February, we will have to finalize and approve a budget. If we can not realize more income, we can only reduce expenses, and for us that may mean eliminating some of the programs and ministries we currently offer. God has richly blessed Faith Presbyterian Church, and you, the members, have been incredibly generous with your giving. The Session will continue to look for ways to deal with this without having to make too many changes but the current numbers have to be modified in some way. We will keep you aware as we proceed with this important part of our church operations and we ask for your continued prayers as we seek to know the direction that God is leading us." 11

Prayers & Squares By Joan Madler Thank you to all who have contributed to the Deacons Fund. This, plus individual donations to the Prayer Quilt ministry, have made it possible for us to give 31 prayer quilts to family and friends and 5 prayer squares. Without your help we could not continue this special ministry. Special thanks to Marilyn Helkenn, my go-to person for help and to Beverly Martyn, Susan Gonzales, Julie Hudson and Carol Pearson for their continued support in the making of the quilts and prayer squares. When you read the thank-you s, you will know how much the lives of the quilt recipients are touched: Dear Fran and wonderful ladies at Faith Presbyterian Church P&S Chapter #52. When Fran suggested to my husband, Joel, that her church would make a prayer blanket for him, it brought tears to his eyes. On Thursday, 10/16, he had an extensive shoulder replacement. He is now on pain management medications with a prognosis of 6-9 months recuperation. Your blanket is beautiful and a wonderful reminder of how our God places certain people in our lives to love and care for us. We will cherish this beautiful blanket. In great appreciation, Joe and Linda Champion Dear Joan, Thank you for the prayer quilt for De Lores. Lynn and I took it to her Sunday afternoon. She was thrilled kept saying and each knot is a prayer to help me. She loved the colors, especially the flowers. Barb Stevenson Pastor Chris received the following from the Netherlands (unedited). Dear Pastor C. Lenocker and members of The Faith Presbyterian Church, How are you all doing? Thank you so much for your wonderful worships Pastor C Lenocker. I am God so thankful that I have been your guest during Spring semester I hope more and more SDSU students will become a member of this church. I am missing SDSU and the worships everyday, but its also good to be back home again and I have told my pastor, family and friends a lot about your worships. I appreciate all your kindness, gentleness and ministries work a lot, praise God. Would you please give the church members, especially Miss Helen, a big hug from me? Hopefully, one day, I will be back in San Diego and the first thing I will do is visiting you guys. I am really praying for this church and God bless you all. Love, Lisa de Bruijn, from The Netherlands. The warm welcome home! 12

Editor s note: Lynda submitted this a month ago, but its publication was delayed because of space issues. My Faith Family October and November for me this year have become the Thanksgiving season. In last month s Newsletter, we learned the origin of the North American Thanksgiving, and that the Canadian October Thanksgiving and November American Thanksgiving have many similarities. This year I found myself remembering last year s Canadian and American Thanksgiving, both were celebrated in San Diego with my brother and his family. Last year s American Thanksgiving we went around the table, and each said what we were thankful for. I vividly remember part of my brother s response that he was thankful for his family. Thanks to my brother Allen Parkes, and his Glioblastoma brain cancer journey, my family has grown, and I am proud to say that I have had the honor and give thanks to God for being welcomed into the Faith Presbyterian family. It brings tears to my eyes remembering 2 ½ years ago, the first day I walked down the aisle of Faith Presbyterian being drawn to the green cross. As the bells commenced I felt such peace; and thought what angelic voices the choir have! I felt such love that day, and was so welcomed! An unbelievable love that when I reflect, I cannot believe.. I, a stranger, was welcomed with such opening arms! Your welcoming continued into Gift of Dance, the choir, and into your hearts and homes. It didn t stop there I met person after person (too many to mention names but you know who you are ) who opened their hearts, and gave of their time, talent and treasure to not only myself, but my brother Allen and his family- Andrea, Ethan and Brandon. You never left our side during Allen s journey to peace. Allen had asked Chris when it was time to do his Celebration of Life Service and we were blessed Thank God! that Pastor Chris was able to do both the San Diego and Canadian Celebration of Life services. Thank you to Chris and those who attended Allen s service, and for Kevin for putting together Allen s amazing journey! Allen truly did bring together his San Diego and Canadian families! I wish all of you a blessed and peaceful Thanksgiving season. I miss you my San Diego family, and hope and pray that God will bring us together in the not too distant future. In the meantime know that I am with you in spirit, and I feel you too and wrap your prayers around me as I wrap myself in your prayer quilt which keeps me company until I return physically to the Faith flock! Namaste, Lynda Major P.S. We have a spare bedroom in our home, which Chris will attest has a very comfortable bed. Larry and I and our canine and feline family, welcome any of you who want to come to visit us in Canada and by the way this Nov. 16th Sunday, I sit here watching the snow fall with a back-drop of still yellow and red leaves on our backyard maple tree - bring your woolies! Catamaran Mariners will meet on Friday, January 9 at 6:15 for a potluck dinner and planning for Important decisions will be made concerning continuing to meet monthly. Bring your ideas. Reservations will be taken on December 28 and January 4. 13

?! Food for Thought Hmmmmm... (A helping of words) by Joan Madler Due to the fact that I will be in New Hampshire when the January Reflection is due, it s the middle of December as I write this, so we are still in the season of Advent. Although I m trying to concentrate on Hope, Joy and Peace I m finding it difficult. There is so much going on in the world that is anything but peaceful. At the first Beacon Service, Chris spoke about Herod and the killing of all 2-year-old boy children after Jesus birth. It made me think of the slaughter of so many children who died in the attack of the Israeli army on Gaza. What has changed in over 2000 thousand years? Then in one of his recent sermons Chris spoke of the oppression of Palestine by the Romans and the difficult travel for Joseph and Mary and the less than ideal conditions under which Jesus was born. Today Bethlehem is situated in the West Bank and is just six miles from Jerusalem. The West Bank is surrounded by a tall concrete wall in an attempt to keep peace between Palestinian and Israeli neighbors. In order to get to the Church of the Nativity in Manger Square, which has bullet holes in it, you must pass through a security checkpoint. Where is the peace that the birth of Jesus was supposed to bring? I watched the PBS special on Peter, Paul and Mary. I had forgotten that they were political activists with their involvement in the peace movement and other causes. The song "If I Had a Hammer" became an anthem of the Civil Rights movement and was performed by the trio at the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his legendary "I Have a Dream" speech. Perhaps in today s world of demonstrations about the shooting deaths of Black Americans we need to revisit If I Had a Hammer with words like Well I got a hammer, And I got a bell, And I got a song to sing, all over this land. It's the hammer of Justice, It's the bell of Freedom, It's the song about Love be- tween my brothers and my sisters, All over this land. Another of their songs is about El Salvador. It begins: There is a sunny little country south of Mexico where the winds are gentle and the waters flow, but goes on: We re happy you have lived another day, last night a thousand more passed away in El Salvador. There s a television crew here from ABC filming Rio Lempe and refugees, calling murdered children the tragedy. Are we still looking for the missing teenagers in Mexico? There s a song about the Immigrant workers in the fields and the orchards in California, Arizona and Oregon. I ve seen those workers harvesting fields and fields of lettuce around Yuma. It is hard, backbreaking work, bending over to slice the lettuce off at ground level and then throwing it into a nearby truck. It is these immigrant workers that put food on our table yet we can t solve the problem of just immigrant laws? There s a song about the boycott of South Africa and the suppression of Blacks and now we need a song about the boycott of Israeli products produced in the illegal Israeli settlements built on Palestinian land and the suppression of Palestinians. Peter, Paul and Mary strove to bring peace and justice for all, not only in the United States but all over the world. While we can t all be folk singers and song writers who reach out across America and to other lands, in 2015, I challenge us to find ways to have hope that the injustices in the world will end, that with Christmas we shall find places of joy to keep in our hearts, that we shall have peace not only in our own lives but in the lives of those in our neighborhood and around the world and finally let us share the love that came down at Christmas until we come together next Advent to once again prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus our Savior. Isaiah 9:6-7. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us: authority rests upon his shoulder: and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 14

Pew View Julie Hudson s Viewpoint Christmas is past but --SEASON OF CHRISTMAS continues for the Twelve Days of Christmas. Advent was a time of planning; looking ahead with anticipation. Now days of new undertaking Adventure - begins. Many festivities are past, but celebrations continue with parties and good times with family and friends. Gifts are becoming a big part of the season. As the boxes and bags appear, there are questions "What will it bring to me? - something I want? or really need?- Maybe even a surprise." Saying thank you for gifts at the time is easy. Sending a thank you by phone or takes more time and thought. There are many tasks demanding attention, in addition to acknowledgment of gifts received, check the greens, dismantle some of the decorations and store until next year. The collection of wrappings, bags, bows - boxes must be cleared - stored or trashed. Before removing the Nativity scene from the place of honor, take time to come again to the manger and greet the Babe. Like the shepherds, responses raised, "What a surprise! This Babe is a gift." How to acknowledge such a gift takes thought and time - even a lifetime. We have heard the Song of the Angels Followed the Star to find the Gift of the Baby Jesus - the Promised one. May our expressions of heart and hand confirm our trust in God and the Gift He offers to us in Jesus the Christ. May we travel on our journey with a new and clear vision, trusting in Immanuel - God with us. From the Holbergs: Hello from the Northwest! We have been in McMinnville, Oregon (population 34,000) for 8 months. Now that we live just a few miles from our daughter and her husband, we are having a wonderful time with them. It is great sharing meals and going to different events together. Northwest Oregon is a beautiful area. Everything is so green and the air quality is superb; of course it s because of the plentiful liquid sunshine. We enjoy exploring the many interesting areas in our county and taking advantage of the fun community events McMinnville has to offer. Several months after arriving in Oregon, we began attending McMinnville Cooperative Ministries church, which is quite unique. The Methodists and the Lutherans share the building and staff but each has a separate worship service. There is also a combined contemporary service. We worship at the United Methodist service. The biggest challenge for us is to remember to say "trespasses" instead of "debtors." The people are very warm and friendly and have made us feel extremely welcome. Although we miss Faith Church and San Diego, we are happy we made the move. Blessings, Kyle and Lorna 15
