Standup Bible Characters: (See Craft Instructions). As you go through the skit, stand up the bible characters in front of the Storyboard when the skit indicates. How to Use Standups: Whichever character is talking, stand that character up in front of the Storyboard. Move them as indicated in the skit. Daniel in the Den! (Show Daniel Standup) We ve been learning all about Daniel who had been taken to Babylon, along with his three friends Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. This week the story is about Daniel. Daniel is all grown up now. Daniel was far away from home, in a new place, so he learned many new things. But he kept some things the same. He kept believing in God -- the one true God (Stick Bible on Daniel s hand). The God of the Bible! (Stick Bible on Daniel s hand, then take him away). Daniel also kept praying to God: (Open window of Daniel s House). Just like always, three times a day, Daniel knelt by his window, and there he prayed. Who would like to say the rhyme with me? (Repeat rhyme, inviting children to say it with you this time. Close Daniel s window). King Darius: King Darius: (Stand up King Darius) King Darius was the new king of Babylon. King Darius picked three special princes to be in charge of all of his men. (Daniel Standup, Princes Standup). Daniel was one of the three princes who were in charge! Let s see what King Darius has to say about Daniel. (Stand Daniel in front of others) Daniel is such a great worker! I m thinking about putting him in charge of the other two Princes! Why do you want to do that, King Darius? Well, Daniel is very wise. He doesn t lie or cheat, and always treats people really well! Well, that s great. But when the other Princes found out the king s plan to put Daniel in charge, they were jealous! So, they tried to get Daniel into trouble. They watched everything Daniel did, but they couldn t find anything that Daniel was doing wrong! (Take Daniel away).

3 God Saved Daniel From the Lions! p2 Two Princes: Two Princes: King Darius: Princes: Two Princes: King Darius: Two Princes: King Darius: King Darius: And, when they spied on Daniel, Do you know what they saw him doing? (Open window of Daniel s House). Right! Who wants to say the rhyme with me? Just like always, three times a day, (Open window) Daniel knelt by his window, and there he prayed. (Close window) Let s see what the Princes think about that? Oh, that Daniel! He never does anything wrong! He s always praying! Hm-mm. Well, if we can t get him in trouble for doing something wrong, then we ll just have to get him in trouble for doing something right! He-e He-e He-e-e! (Two Princes, King) So the two Princes went to King Darius: (Arrogantly) King Darius, we think you should make a new rule. The new rule should be: Nobody can pray to any god. They can only pray to you. If athey pray to any god besides the king, they ll be thrown into the lion s den! Hm-m-m. Well, O.k. That sounds like a good rule. I ll write it down. (Pretend to write on Scroll 1). There. (Put a stamp on the scroll). Now it can t be changed! Let s put up the new rule so everyone can see it! (Stick rule 1 on the right side of the Storyboard). And the two Princes were very happy. Ha-ha. Ha-ha-ha!! Now Daniel won t be in charge of us! Now he ll be ripped to pieces by the LIONS! Ha-ha! Ha-ha! (Bring Daniel in front). Daniel saw the new rule too! But Daniel loved God! He wouldn t let any new rule stop him from praying! He knew that wouldn t be right, so he just kept praying the same as he always did. (Take Daniel, Princes away). (Open window). Who wants to say the rhyme with me? (Encourage kids to join you). Just like always, three times a day, Daniel knelt by his window, and there he prayed. (Close window). And this time when he prayed, I bet Daniel was asking God for help! (Two Princes) And just like before, along came the two Princes! And when they saw Daniel, what do you think Daniel was doing? (Let children answer). Very good! Daniel was praying! Who wants to say it with me? (Open window). Just like always, three times a day, Daniel knelt by his window, and there he prayed. So then the two Princes went back to King Darius and told him. (Stand Princes by King Darius). (In a sing-song tattletale voice). King Darius, guess what we saw? We saw Daniel by his window, praying to his God! He pays no attention to your new rule! Oh, no! Not Daniel! Daniel s my favorite worker! There must be a way to save Daniel! Nope! So-r-r-y. There s nothing you can do to help him. (Tap on the scroll as you continue). You signed it and put your stamp on it. A rule is a rule, and the king s rule CANNOT be changed! (Sad voice). Oh, no! Well, if I can t change it, then Daniel will have to be thrown in the lions den. O.k. Go get Daniel. So they brought Daniel before King Darius. (Bring Daniel up front). (Worried voice). Oh Daniel! I hope your God, who you pray to night and day, will save you from the lions!

4 God Saved Daniel From the Lions! p3 King Darius: King: King: Daniel: King: Daniel: King: King: King: King: Meanwhile the lions were getting very hungry. (Point to lions in den). Who can tell me what a lion sounds like? Roar-r-r-r! R-r-r-r! Very good. And Daniel was thrown in to the lions! (Stick Daniel, Angel in Den). I wonder how King Darius is feeling now? Boo-HOO-HOO! I feel TERRIBLE! I m so sad that I don t feel like doing anything! (Put moon on Storyboard). Its time to go to bed, but I can t sleep! I m worried about Daniel. I ll just lay here. (King Darius gets in the blanket, a little ways from the storyboard). Good-night. Night-night. Poor King Darius. He was so sad he didn t sleep at all that night. But, first thing in the morning (Replace moon with sun). As soon as the sun came up, King Darius got up too! ( Run King Darius over to the den.) He ran to the lions den to see how Daniel was doing. He stood at the entrance and called out to Daniel in a loud voice: DANIEL! DANIEL! Has your God been able to save you from the lions? The king waited and waited and waited. He didn t hear anything. Oh, no. Wait a minute. I think I do hear something. Daniel? King Darius! DANIEL!! (Jumps up and down). God sent his angel to shut the mouths of the lions! The lions did NOT hurt me! Oh Daniel! DANIEL!! Ha-ha, Ha! That makes me so happy! (Dances around) The king didn t want to waste another minute, so he gave new orders: Quickly, Get Daniel out of there! So the king s workers came and got Daniel out of the den. (Take away Daniel Kneeling. Show kids Angel, set up Standup Daniel). Hey, look! There was an angel there with Daniel! God had sent the angel to shut the mouths of the lions! Let s take a look at Daniel and see if he s o.k. (Look at Daniel up close). Do you see any scratches? (Let kids look at him up close). Nope. Do you see any bites? (Let kids look). Nope. There s not even one scratch or bite on Daniel. Daniel trusted in God, and God did a miracle! He sent an angel to save Daniel from the Lions! What do you think, King Darius? I just got an idea! Where are the ones who got Daniel in trouble? Bring them here! (Stand Princes in front of King). O.k. Here they are, King Darius. What should we do with them? Throw them into the lions den! Are you sure? Those lions sound pretty hungry! (Make claws). R-r-r-r! Who wants to pretend to be a lion with me? (Invite kids to join you). R-r-r-r-r! So when the king gave the order, the two Princes were thrown into the Lions den! (Put Princes in the lions den). And that was the end of them! (Take away Princes). Then King Darius made a new rule. (Stick Scroll 2 up). Can you tell us the new rule, King Darius? King: (Reads Scroll 2, or Daniel 6:26-27). Transtion: Prayer sample: (Stand up Daniel). And Daniel continued to do great for many years, as God watched over him. Do you think Daniel thanked God for saving him from the lions? I do too. (Open window). There he is. Now let us pray and thank God for being so awesome! And let s thank him for doing great miracles for us! (Let the Holy Spirit lead you to say your own words). Our awesome Father in heaven, thank you for your great love and power! You can do great miracles! And you are able to save us, just like you saved Daniel from the lions! Help us to rely on you always and pray to you often, like Daniel did. In Jesus name.

5 Daniel 3 Daniel and the Lions Preschool /Kindergarten Activities Snack Ideas: Children can make lion faces on round crackers or cookies, etc: Use M&Ms for eyes; raisins for the nose; small crackers, Nilla Wafers, Cookie Crisp cereal or other round cereal for ears. Warm-up Activity: Daniel and the Lions Puzzles or Coloring Pages that come with this lesson. Action Rhyme: Daniel in the Den of the Lions When Daniel was taken to Babylon, he kept his faith. When Daniel went to Babylon he stilled prayed. Then a new law was made -- you must pray to the king! Who every heard of such a thing? Walk two fingers. Place hands together in prayer. Hold up one finger. Put hands out to side, palms up. Daniel loved God, so he wasn t afraid. For he knew God was able to save! So Daniel was caught praying on his knees. I bet he prayed, Lord, help me please! So Daniel was thrown into the lions den! But God saved Daniel! He sent an angel just then! The angel shut the lions mouths so they couldn t bite! They couldn t hurt Daniel, even with all their might. King Darius was worried, and ran to the den! He cried out to Daniel, and waited and then He was so happy when he heard Daniel s voice! Daniel s alright! That gave him such joy! Daniel was brought out and looked over real close. There was no scratch or bite from his head to his toes! Daniel trusted in God, and God saved him that day! I think God did a miracle! What do you say? Point to your heart. Point up. Point to knees. Place hands together in prayer. Make throwing motion. Flap wings (arms). Touch your mouth. Make a muscle. Run two fingers. Place hands on sides of mouth, cupped. Point to your smile. Clap for joy. Walk two fingers. Point to head, toes. Place hands together in prayer. Point up. Large Group Pretend Play Activity Mini-Skit! Let s Act Out Part of the Story! This activity should help the children experience first-hand, a little of what it was like for Daniel. You can keep things simple by just designating an area of your room as the lion s den. If you don t have time, you can do it as a review the following week or for a mid-week bible class. Characters / Costumes: Instructions: Lion Masks Crafts (See Craft Instructions) Crown for King Darius or cape costume Crowns for Daniel Angel costume or white shirt Optional Supplies: Large cardboard box (like furniture box) Safety Box Cutter (adult only) Two Scrolls Prep: Use the Rules 1 and 2 from the Lesson/Skit. Lion s Den: Do any of the following to make your Den area or make a Den out of a box: Put down brown/gray rugs. Place a gray or brown blanket over a table. Box Den: Make a door on the box big enough for children to go in and out. Make a poster that says Lion s Den to hang at entrance. Activity: Help children put the costumes on over their clothes. Let children volunteer to be the characters. Just tell the children what to say right before they say it. Whoever is not a character, they get to be a lion. Begin with the lions in the den.

They can only pray to the king. Pretends to sign and stamp rule. Let s see if Daniel pays attention to the new rule. Nope! I love God, and I will always pray to him! (Kneels and pretends to pray). Daniel. I m so upset! They told me you were praying to God! But, I can t change the rule! Now you ll get thrown into the lions den! Well, Daniel, you heard the king. Into the den you go! Those lions sure do sound hungry! (Put Daniel in the Lions Den) R-r-r-r! (Claws). All you lions have to shut your mouths! You re not allowed to bite Daniel! (Angel goes around and pretends to shut lions mouths). (Close mouths and stop clawing). Daniel, I hope your God can save you from the lions! How are you feeling, King Darius? I m so sad. I m just going to go to bed. (Goes a little ways away, and pretends to sleep). The next morning the king got up and ran to see how Daniel was! (Runs over to the den). Daniel! Was your God able to save you from the lions? The lions did not hurt me! God sent an angel and shut the mouths of the lions! Oh, I m so happy! (Jumps around). Bring Daniel out of the lions den! Then the king made a new rule! Now everyone must serve Daniel s God! He is the one true God! He saved Daniel from the lions! Talk Time / Play Time Activity Storyboard Fun! King Darius Standup Prep: Divide the children into groups of either 3-10 Daniel Standup Princes Angel Lion s Den, Stickers children (so they each have a character or sticker to move). Activity: Lay the characters on the table. Go through the questions below and let them move the Character or sticker they pick when indicated. Q & A Answers / Actions for Children to Do : Which one is King Darius? Stand up King Darius. Who can find the lions? Let children put them in the den. Who got Daniel into trouble? Let child stand up Princes. What did they tell the king to do? Make a new rule. Who can find the rule? Let child stick Scroll 1 on board. Did Daniel obey the rule? No. He loved God. He kept praying to the one true God. (Let child open window). What happened after Daniel was seen praying to the one true God? Right! He got thrown into the scary lions den! (Let child put Daniel in the lions den). Who did God send to shut the mouth of the The angel! (Let child put angel in den). lions? So Daniel stayed in the lions den all night long. (Let child put moon on storyboard). Who can find the moon? What happened when the sun came up? King ran to the den. (Let child put sun on board. What did Daniel say when the king called to him? God sent an angel to shut the mouth of the lions! I m not hurt! Then he got Daniel out of there. (Let children take Daniel out). Did he have any scratches or bites on him? No! Not one! That s right! God did a miracle and saved Daniel from the lions! Do you think God could save us from something scary? (Yes). Daniel was weak compared to those strong scary lions! But Daniel knew God could do miracles! So Daniel trusted in God, and he kept praying to God! And God did save Daniel from the lions! And he can save us too! I hope all of us will put our trust in him!

7 Daniel Lesson 5 God Saved Daniel From the Lions! Children s Crafts Safety Tips: Do prep work with craft knives at home. Keep scissors out of reach of children. Keep all glue caps, marker caps and other small items out of reach of children age 3 or under, as they are a choking hazard. Use nontoxic washable markers only. Watch young children when they are using crayons, to be sure they don't put them in their mouths. Have an emergency plan in place in case of injury, ie. personnel trained in First Aid procedures. Daniel in the Lions Den Puzzles Photo of Completed Craft: Craft Supplies: Craft Instructions: Puzzle page Cardstock Scissors (adult only) Crayons (for bw puzzles) Envelopes (Ages 3+). Kids Craft: Prep: Print and make copies of black-and-white puzzle pages onto cardstock. Craft: Children color puzzles. Cut puzzles apart for children. (Keep scissors out of reach of children). Place pieces in envelope. Write child s name on envelope. Classroom Activity Prep: Print and make copies of either the color-illustrated or bw puzzles, onto cardstock. (You could also color the bw puzzles before you make copies on a color copier). Cut puzzles apart. Keep pieces to each puzzle in a separate labeled envelope. Make copies onto cardstock. Cut out characters, stand, Bible for children. (Keep scissors out of reach of children). Craft: Children color pictures. Fold back tabs to stand. Princes Stand: Glue stand on back of the Two Princes, so that the stands slant upwards at the bottom outer edges (See other characters). Bible: Place restickable glue on the back of Bible. Allow to dry before sticking on Daniel. (The lesson tells you when to use it). Den Option 1: Make copies of Den onto gray copy paper. Staple several Dens together to cut at the same time. With craft knife, cut out three sides of door (but not on dashed fold line). Den Option 2: Use Den as a pattern: Print Den on cardstock, cut out perimeter and inner square also. Lay on gray construction paper, trace around den and inside square. With craft knife, cut out Den and three sides of door, leaving left side attached. Craft: Kids color Daniel picture. Glue Daniel picture to the underside of the Den, but do not glue behind the door. Fold on dashed line.

Prep: Print craft page. Make copies onto cardstock. Cut out lions: Easy way to cut out holes for eyes: Fold on eyes and hole-punch on fold. Now it s easier to insert scissor to cut out eye circles. Craft: Children color lion pictures. Glue craft stick to bottom. To Use: Kids hold mask up to face. Make copies onto cardstock. Craft: Option 1: Children tear up newspaper, roll into paper wads, dump into lunch bag. Fill to 4 high. (Option 2: Dump paper shred in until 4 high). At the top end, fold sides of bag back, making a cone shape (to give lion a neck. See photo). Then fold top down 1-1/2, fold again, and tape in back. Face: Kids color craft page. Cut out pieces for children. Tape lower 2 of head onto neck. Fold back tabs on legs. Tape tabs to front, and tail to back. Lion Finger Puppets Craft Photo of Completed Craft: Craft Supplies: Photo of Lion Body: Finger Puppets from Stickers p1 Cardstock (lightweight) Scissors (adult only) Crayons Hole punch (optional) Ages 3+. Prep: Print craft page. Make copies onto cardstock. Cut out holes for fingers: Fold on while circles. Hole punch on fold. Now it s easier to insert scissor to cut out circles for kids fingers. 9 Daniel and the Lions Storyboard (Visual Aid) For Children s Bible Lesson based on Daniel 6: God Saved Daniel From the Lions! Make Your Own Visual Aids Using Printable Stickers and Standup Bible Characters Safety Tips: Keep scissors out of reach of children. Pre-made Stand-ups: Angel King Darius Two Princes Grown-up Daniel Pictures to Print (Stickers): Sun, Moon, Bible Daniel Kneeling Daniel Praying Scrolls of New Laws Words pages 1-3 * Tri-fold Display Boards (Also called Presentation Boards or Project Display Boards). You can find these for $1.00 at some dollar stores or 99 cents stores. To use a smaller display board, reduce the size of your pictures. Make your own: Cut a large cardboard box: Using a safety box cutter, carefully cut off one side, the top and bottom. The display board in the photo is 40 X 27. The center is 20 wide, the sides 10. How To Make the Daniel and the Lions Storyboard Design Your Storyboard: Arrange the words and pictures in a way that you think will work best for you and your class. The storyboard design above is just one possibility. Read through the lesson to familiarize yourself with it. Play with the pictures and characters to see what works best. After you decide on your storyboard design, glue the Den, Daniel s House, and the Words to the Storyboard with extra-strength glue. Daniel s House: Daniel s house Cut a big rectangle out of construction paper. (The one in photo is 8 X 12 ). Cut a window in the house, but leave the left side attached, and fold. You ll need to open and close it when the lesson indicates to do so. (Window is 3-1/2 X 2-3/4). Roof: Cut a rectangle with the edge slanted. (See photo). Glue Daniel s house onto the Storyboard with extra-strength glue. Den: Cut a large semi-circle shape out of craft or construction paper. Crumple, then straighten to give it a rock look. Add crayon marks (with crayon laid on its side) for added texture. Make smaller semi-circle shape out of black construction paper to glue on top of that (Inside of den). Make sure it s big enough to fit all of your characters. Use extra-strength glue to glue the den onto the Storyboard. (The one in the photo is 11 X 10 ).

10 Daniel and the Lions Storyboard Instructions, page 2 Stickers: Print the black-and-white pictures and color them (shown above), or print the color-illustrated pictures: The Scrolls, Sun, Moon, Daniel Kneeling, Lions will need to be repositionable since you ll moving them around during the lesson. Also put restickable glue on the back of the Angel and the Princes. To make repositionable stickers, place restickable glue or Elmer s Repositionable glue on the back of the pictures. Allow to dry before sticking. Standups: If you have already done lessons 3 or 4, use the Angel from that lesson. The new standups you ll need to make for this lesson are: King Darius, Grown-up Daniel and the Two Princes. Put restickable glue on the back of the Angel and the Princes. Fold back the tabs before sticking. See Craft instructions. How to Use the Daniel and the Lions Storyboard: Place Storyboard on the table. Reserve a seat for yourself next to the Storyboard. You may want to have a helper to place the stickers on the opposite side of the Storyboard. Seat children so they can all see it. Introduce the characters to the scene and stand them up in front of the board when indicated in the lesson. The lesson (skit) will also tell you when to add and remove your stickers. Sharing Your Daniel and the Lions Storyboard: Limited Sharing: To get maximum use out of your Bible Storyboard, you may also share your lesson and bible resources with the teachers of your same local church or preschool, and with your own family. Daniel and the Lions Bible Play Set: Make the characters more sturdy by laminating or placing clear Contact Paper TM over your stickers and characters before cutting them out.
