Bill Wiegand, 216 Broadway St., Pella ; new phone ANNUAL PARISH CORPORATE BOARD MEETING All pastors and lay directors (trustees) are to attend this meeting as required by the parish s by-laws. This meeting will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2 p.m. at St. Mary, Riverside. A make-up meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 7 p.m., at St. Mary, Riverside. Members of the parish corporate board are the Bishop, Vicar General, pastor and two lay directors. It is pertinent that all members attend. VOCATIONS OFFICE Holy Hours of Prayer for Vocations are starting across the diocese beginning the month of June. You are invited and encouraged to come and pray for the gift of vocations. YOU are invited to join together and pray with other Catholics throughout the Diocese of Davenport in asking our Lord to bless our diocese with an abundance of vocations. Come and pray that many more will follow the Lord s call to preach the Word of God and celebrate the Sacraments. Without YOU, this might not be possible. A Holy Hour to pray for vocations will take place on (please insert day/date) at (please insert parish/church and town) starting at (please put time in here). In the words of Pope Benedict: Do not be afraid to give your life to Christ! Nothing will ever replace the ministry of priests at the heart of the Church! Nothing will ever replace a Mass for the salvation of the world! Dear young and not so young who are listening to me, do not leave Christ's call unanswered. Plan to attend with your children and friends. ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL The kick off date for the 2011 appeal is September (Our aim is to always have it the last weekend in September.) Materials will be delivered to deanery meetings in August and September, as much as possible. Materials this year will include a flyer, a separate pledge envelope, a short DVD and a CD. The CD hopefully will be in English and in Spanish. There will be no mailing from the diocese. Promotion of the ADA will take place primarily in the parishes in addition to The Catholic Messenger articles. Administration of the ADA will be done in the diocesan office. When pledge envelopes are collected in the parish they will be sent to the diocese. Our office will send out monthly pledge reminders and IRS tax letters. Regular reports will be sent to parishes. 2 FINANCE OFFICE Background Check Audit Lists were due May 31. This list details all employees, volunteers and state certified teachers at your parish or school entity during July 1, 2010 to June 30, You were encouraged if you knew an individual you had listed did not have a background check or is due for their 5YR renewal check, to send their completed background check forms and a copy of their driver s license immediately for processing. Entities which had outstanding forms due were contacted to submit those forms ASAP. If you will be running any Vacation Bible School programs between now and June 30 you must submit the names of your volunteers to be sure background checks have been processed for them. She is the Director of the Dept. of Human Dignity, Secretariat for Evangelization & Social Concerns from the Diocese of Pittsburgh. More information will be forthcoming. Just Faith Workshop: June 25, 9 a.m. Noon, Cedar Rapids. Jack Jazreel, Executive Director of JustFaith Ministries will be providing an informational workshop. This is an exciting opportunity for clergy, parish staff, parishioners and small faith communities interested in expanding and promoting social ministry. See the attachment for more information. Donations for tornado victims in Joplin, MO can be made through Catholic Charities USA. This is the US Bishops domestic disaster relief organization. Faith Formation... Preparing the Way, the June Institute for faith formation leaders, will be June 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at St. Vincent Center in Davenport. This event will provide guidance and resources to help faith formation leaders introduce the new Roman Missal. Our presenter will be Deacon Frank Agnoli, diocesan Director of Liturgy. A registration flier can be found here (scroll down the page). Great Expectations, Coaching Parents to Form Their Own Children: August 26, St. Patrick Parish, Iowa City. This is for all parish faith formation leaders, school leaders, volunteer catechists and teachers. Leisa Anslinger will introduce us to the principles as well as the nuts and bolts of succeeding in coaching parents to form their own children. Participants will receive excellent free links to online support and follow-up. An information flyer with a registration form is attached. New Resources for MOMS/Women s Groups: St. Anthony Messenger Press has published a new series for Catholic women. These books can be used independently for personal reflection or with others in a group for discussion and/or faith sharing. Eight titles in the Called to Holiness series are available: Making Sense of God, Living a Spirituality of Action, Grieving with Grace, Awakening to Prayer, Embracing Latina Spirituality, Creating New Life, Nurturing Families, Finding My Voice, and Weaving Faith and Experience. We have reviewed Living a Spirituality of Action and Weaving Faith and Experience and found them to be very useful. 3 Natural Family Planning (NFP) Awareness Week, July 24-30, is a national educational campaign of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). A variety of resources are available including posters and postcards for purchase from the USCCB. Go to See the attachment for additional information. Certificate Program in Youth Ministry Studies will again be offered this summer at St. Ambrose University. This program of the Center for Ministry Development includes eight courses to promote personal, spiritual and ministerial growth. It can be taken by people preparing for a career in youth ministry, veteran leaders seeking enrichment, or volunteers wanting to strengthen their skills. CIA brings nearly 100 Catholic youth (incoming freshmen through graduating seniors) together for three days of service, prayer, learning and fun. Go to for information and registration materials. A frequent presenter at conferences and in-service days, Leisa speaks on topics of catechesis, pastoral leadership and stewardship.
