Tuesday, December 1, 2015 TUESDAY (Lec. 176) 1) Isaiah 11: FIRST WEEK 2) Luke 10:21-24 God fulfills his promises in wondrous, unexpected ways. God's wisdom is far beyond human wisdom. The Book of Isaiah opens in a time of prosperity which will turn into a period of defeat and exile. Despite it all, the prophet is sustained by the firm hope and childlike faith that God will fulfill his promises. His longing for God's deliverance, which was shared by many Old Testament prophets and kings alike, will find fulfillment in Jesus Christ. The prophet Isaiah writes that, even in the face of the partial destruction of King David's dynasty, the Messiah will descend from the line of David, because God is always true to his covenant. The small shoot becomes a mighty king, filled with the gifts of the Spirit of God. In the Gospel, Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit that these truths are hidden from the wise of this world, but are revealed to the childlike. PRIEST: Trusting that God provides for us always, let us offer him our prayers. 1) That Pope Francis and all the clergy will continue the work of sharing the Gospel message of new life, let us 2) That civil leaders will work to protect children, the elderly and all the vulnerable from the dangers in our world, let us 3) That we in this faith community will always be a welcoming presence for visitors, let us pray to the Lord. 4) That those who are ailing in body or spirit may be surrounded by generous caregivers and people of good will, let us 5) That the dead, whom we mourn and miss, will know the glorious rejoicing of heaven, let us PRIEST: Merciful Father, hear the prayers that we offer you this day. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Wednesday, December 2, 2015 WEDNESDAY (Lec. 177) 1) Isaiah 25:6-10a - FIRST WEEK 2) Matthew 15:29-37 The Lord shows us the abundance of giving. Jesus miraculously heals the weak and the suffering, and provides a great abundance of food for their journey all of these are signs that he is the promised Messiah. The Lord's compassion exemplifies the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. How shall we respond to God's generosity with us? When we follow Jesus' example of self-giving, our joy, as well as the joy of our neighbor, is multiplied. The world of God's creation figures strongly in today's readings. The prophet Isaiah speaks of God's holy mountain: a place where God will provide for his people, destroy death forever and bring lasting joy. The psalmist leads us beside restful waters in the well-beloved twenty-third Psalm. The Gospel unites these themes by taking us to a high point near the Sea of Galilee. There, the Lord mercifully and abundantly feeds his people, giving us an example to follow. PRIEST: With confidence, let us place our Advent petitions before God. 1) For our Holy Father and all church leaders, may the Holy Spirit guide them in their efforts to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, let us 2) For world leaders, may they work toward justice and peace for their people, let us pray to the Lord. 3) For those who live in war-torn countries or who have been forced out of their homeland, may they find safety and peace, let us 4) For the sick and suffering in our community, may the Lord heal them and walk with them on their journey, let us 5) For those who have died, may they be granted eternal peace and may those left behind be consoled, let us PRIEST: Heavenly Father, we ask that you hear and answer these prayers. We ask this through your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Thursday, December 3, 2015 THURSDAY (Lec. 178) 1) Isaiah 26:1-6 - FIRST WEEK 2) Matthew 7:21, Will we be welcomed into the kingdom of heaven? Jesus says, Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven Will we be among those who enter? How are we to know? Those who do the will of the Father will be welcomed into the kingdom of heaven. In the first reading, Judah sings a song of praise recognizing God as its protector and eternal rock. In the Gospel, Jesus states that only those who do the will of his father will be welcomed into the kingdom of heaven, and those who listen to his words and act on them will be like a wise man who built his house on a firm rock. PRIEST: As we continue to strengthen our faith firmly in Christ, let us offer our prayers to the Lord, who knows our needs and desires better than we do. 1) For members of the Church, both clergy and laity, may they continue to inspire the faithful to help build the kingdom of God in their homes, workplaces, schools and communities, let us pray to the Lord. 2) For all those in leadership, may they work to build communities where the dignity and sanctity of human life is respected and protected from conception to natural death, let us 3) For all those who are displaced due to war or natural disasters, may they place their hope and trust in Jesus Christ as they rebuild their lives in unfamiliar places, let us 4) For all members of this faith community, may we always be open to the working of the Holy Spirit so that we can support one another on the path of discipleship, let us 5) For those who have died, may they come to enjoy perfect peace and joy in heaven, let us PRIEST: Heavenly Father, we ask that you hear and answer our prayers according to your will. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Friday, December 4, 2015 FRIDAY (Lec. 179) 1) Isaiah 29: FIRST WEEK 2) Matthew 9:27-31 (Opt. Mem. Saint John Damascene, Priest and Doctor of the Church) Good news cannot be kept quiet. The two blind men healed by Jesus had to tell others of the great gift they received. A great gift of love is given to us a Savior who redeems us and through whom we have eternal salvation. During this Advent season, as well as every day, we are called to be heralds of this Good News. In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah proclaims the words of the Lord; in a very little while the deaf will hear, the blind will see and the lowly will ever find joy in the Lord. In the Gospel, two blind men ask Jesus for pity. Through their faith in Jesus they are healed. Jesus warns them not to tell anyone, but they go out and spread the news. PRIEST: Trusting that all of God s promises will be fulfilled, let us offer our prayers to the Father in confidence. 1) For members of the Church, that we may be sincere and effective witnesses to the Gospel, let us 2) For those who govern, that they may exercise their authority with humility and devotion, let us 3) For those who live trapped in fear and doubt, that they may feel the love and assurance of Jesus, let us 4) For our parish community, may we recognize and remember our duty to love and support one another in all ways, let us 5) For our deceased brothers and sisters, may they come to share in eternal life, let us pray to the Lord. PRIEST: Almighty Father and God, accept the prayers your people offer in humility, through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Saturday, December 5, 2015 SATURDAY (Lec. 180) 1) Isaiah 30:19-21, FIRST WEEK 2) Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5a, 6-8 Without cost we have received, and without cost we are to give. In the Gospel, Jesus instructed the disciples as they went forth to preach and heal that they were not to accept payment from others for without cost they had received and without cost they were to give. Similarly, all that we have is a gift from God. As such, we are to give generously of our time, talent and treasure in love and service to others. The first reading from Isaiah tells of God s promise to bring salvation and restoration to Israel. God will work to bring this about by teaching the Israelites to walk in his ways and by blessing them abundantly so they may prosper. The Gospel recounts Jesus saying to his disciples, The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. PRIEST: Recognizing that all we have is a gift from God, let us join together in offering our prayers to our loving Father in heaven. 1) For all members of the Church, may we pour ourselves out generously in love and service to others, let us 2) For Christians being persecuted around the world, may they be blessed with the grace and strength needed to persevere in faith, let us 3) For those living with a chronic illness, may they receive the appropriate care needed so they may continue to share their gifts and talents with others, let us 4) For each of us, may we strive to grow in our commitment to live as intentional disciples of Jesus by taking the time to pray each day, and by trusting that Jesus will give us the grace we need to bear faithful witness to the Gospel, let us 5) For those who have died, may they see God face to face in heaven, let us PRIEST: Father, confident that you hear our prayers, we ask that you grant us the grace we need to lead lives which are holy and pleasing to you. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2015 (Lec. 6) 1) Baruch 5:1-9 2) Philippians 1:4-6, ) Luke 3:1-6 SECOND SUNDAY Are we prepared to carry out the will of God? Advent is a season of patient waiting, preparation and action. John the Baptist spent time in the desert in preparation for his mission. When called upon to proclaim a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, he was ready to carry out the will of God. Are we ready to do this as well? In the Book of Baruch, Jerusalem is reminded that God is leading Israel in joy by the light of his glory. In the second reading, Saint Paul offers words of affirmation and encouragement to the Philippians. In the Gospel, God calls John the Baptist out of the wilderness to begin his ministry. PRIEST: Confident in his love for us, let us offer our prayers to our heavenly Father. 1) For all members of the Church as we journey through this season of Advent, may we grow in a deeper understanding and expression of the cardinal virtues of faith, hope and love, let us pray to the Lord. 2) For world leaders, may they model the Prince of Peace and work to bring stability and security to war-torn regions throughout the world, let us 3) For those who are experiencing isolation and loneliness this Advent, may they find comfort and joy through the Holy Spirit and the compassion of others, let us 4) For all of us gathered here during this season of Advent, may we be inspired by the words of John the Baptist and proclaim the good news of salvation to all those we meet this week, let us 5) For all the faithful departed, may they rejoice with all the angels and saints in the heavenly kingdom, let us PRIEST: Almighty God, you have remained faithful to your covenant throughout the ages. Hear the prayers we offer today, and in your mercy grant them according to your divine will. We pray through Christ our Lord.

Monday, December 7, 2015 MONDAY (Lec. 181) 1) Isaiah 35: SECOND WEEK 2) Luke 5:17-26 (OBL. MEM. Saint Ambrose, Bishop and Doctor of the Church) Be strong, fear not! Like Israel in the time of the prophet Isaiah, we often need to hear words of comfort, hope and joy. During this season of Advent, that is exactly what we continue to receive through the words of sacred Scripture. We are called to be attentive God is with us and, as we see in both readings, he is working wondrous deeds. The prophet Isaiah proclaims the wondrous deeds of God. He reminds Israel that God comes to save them. The prophecy of the first reading is fulfilled in the Gospel in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus heals a paralytic; in doing so, he reveals his authority to save through the forgiveness of sins. PRIEST: We humbly present our needs, and the needs of others, to our loving God. 1) For members of the Church, may our faith be strengthened by the example of our leaders, let us 2) For those in public office, may they govern in a way that is responsive to the needs of the people they serve, let us 3) For those who volunteer in soup kitchens or other ministries to feed the hungry, may the Holy Spirit inspire and strengthen them, let us 4) For our church community, may we be a welcoming presence to all, let us 5) For those who have died, may they come to enjoy eternal peace in heaven, let us pray to the Lord. PRIEST: Loving Father, with grateful hearts we ask that you hear and answer our prayers, through your Son, Jesus.

Tuesday, December 8, 2015 THE IMMACULATE (Lec. 689) CONCEPTION OF THE 1) Genesis 3:9-15, 20 BLESSED VIRGIN MARY 2) Ephesians 1:3-6, (Patronal Feast Day 3) Luke 1:26-38 of the United States of America) - SOLEMNITY (Holy Day of Obligation) God s mercy is with us. Mary was favored indeed conceived without sin, she was set apart to bear the Savior of the world. Pope Francis has chosen this feast day to open the extraordinary jubilee Year for Mercy. As he writes in the document announcing the year, God chose Mary to be the mother of man s Redeemer. When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of mercy. Mercy will always be greater than any sin. (Misericordiae Vultus #3) The first reading recounts Adam and Eve s confession of having eaten the forbidden fruit. The Letter to the Ephesians states that, through Jesus Christ, we are destined for adoption. In the Gospel, the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she has been favored by God to bear a son who will rule over the house of Jacob forever. PRIEST: Though we stand before the Lord as sinners, we call upon the Blessed Mother to be at our side as we humbly ask the Lord to hear our prayers. 1) For Pope Francis and all the clergy, may their lives of faithful and effective witness to the Gospel be an example for us all, let us 2) For public officials, may they seek to shape policies that respect the sanctity of life from conception through natural death, let us 3) For our faith community, may we experience the loving mercy of God through regular celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation, let us 4) For those discouraged by the lack of gainful employment, may they be strengthened by the Holy Spirit and continue in their pursuit, let us 5) For those who have died, may they find a place at the heavenly banquet, let us PRIEST: Heavenly Father, hear the prayers we offer you this day. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Wednesday, December 9, 2015 WEDNESDAY (Lec. 183) 1) Isaiah 40: SECOND WEEK 2) Matthew 11:28-30 (Opt. Mem. Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin) The Lord will renew us. Our burdens sometimes seem unbearable, but as long as we have hope in God, he will renew us. In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah promises renewed strength to those who trust in the Lord. In the Gospel, Jesus invites his followers to take up his yoke, and gain rest through him. PRIEST: We raise our voices to the Father, offering him our needs and the needs of others. 1) For the holy men and women in our Church, may they continue to inspire the faithful to spread the Good News, let us 2) For the leaders of nations, that they may govern with compassion and respect for the dignity of all, let us 3) For those who suffer from lack of food, shelter, employment or health care, that compassionate Christians and others of good will may help to lighten their burden, let us 4) For the sick and suffering in our parish, that they may be renewed in both body and spirit, let us 5) For the faithful departed, that they may know perfect joy and peace in heaven, let us pray to the Lord. PRIEST: God our Father, hear and answer our prayers. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Thursday, December 10, 2015 THURSDAY (Lec. 184) 1) Isaiah 41: SECOND WEEK 2) Matthew 11:11-15 The choice is ours. In the first reading, we hear the comforting words that God is the Lord your God, who grasp your right hand I will help you. Are we willing to respond to God s generous offer and grasp his hand? Taking his hand may mean letting go of something. We need not fear, however, for God will bless and protect us. The choice is ours. In the first reading, Israel is assured that God will not forsake them. They shall rejoice in the Lord and glory in the Holy One of Israel. In the Gospel, Jesus extols John the Baptist. He goes to say that even as great as John is, the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John. PRIEST: Confident in God s ever-present love for his people, let us bring him our petitions. 1) That the Church throughout the world will be a light to those in darkness, let us 2) That this time of preparation for the coming of Christ will draw others to the joy of salvation, let us 3) That those who suffer from addictions may accept the grace of God, and be helped by people of good will, let us 4) That the members of our community who feel alienated and alone will find companionship among Christ s disciples, let us 5) That those who have died may come to share eternal glory in heaven, let us PRIEST: Heavenly Father, we ask you to hear and answer our prayers which we offer in the name of your Son, Jesus, our Lord.

Friday, December 11, 2015 FRIDAY (Lec. 185) 1) Isaiah 48: SECOND WEEK 2) Matthew 11:16-19 (Opt. Mem. Saint Damasus I, Pope) Discipleship requires action, not judgment. In the Gospel, it appears that the crowd was never happy. All they seemed to do was sit in judgment. Sitting on the sidelines, judging others, is often a safe place to be. It exonerates us of responsibility. Being a disciple of Christ requires a choice. It requires that we stop judging and act with love and compassion. In the first reading, Israel is reminded that it is the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, their Redeemer, who instructs and leads them. In the Gospel, Jesus confronts the crowd. He tells them that they are not responding to John the Baptist s message; instead, they sit by in judgment. PRIEST: As we await Christ s return in glory, let us bring our prayers and needs before our God. 1) For our Holy Father and all the clergy, may they continue to inspire us to walk in the ways of Jesus, let us 2) For governments and world leaders, may they work to uphold the sanctity of life from conception to natural death, let us 3) For all who struggle to find meaning and direction in their lives, may we who await the return of Christ shine forth as a beacon of light and hope in their search, let us 4) For those who are sick in body, mind or spirit, that they might find the peace of Christ through the care of the faithful, let us 5) For those who have died marked with the sign of faith, may they enter into eternal life in heaven, let us PRIEST: Gracious and loving God, hear and answer our prayers. For we offer them to you through Christ our Lord.

Saturday, December 12, 2015 OUR LADY (Lec. 690A) OF GUADALUPE 1) Zechariah 2:14-17 or - FEAST Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab 2) Luke 1:26-38 or Luke 1:39-47 NOTE: Or any readings from the Lectionary for Ritual Masses (vol. IV), the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, nos Remember the power of faith in God. The story of Mary s surrender to God s will to become the mother of Jesus, and Juan Diego s persistence in bringing news of the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe, serve as reminders of the power of faith in God. The first reading tells of how God will act to bring salvation, healing and restoration to the people of Israel. The Gospel from Luke tells of the visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary, and her response to becoming the mother of God. PRIEST: Let us offer our petitions to God for our needs and the needs of the world. 1) For Pope Francis and Church leaders, that they continue to serve the faithful and offer effective witness to the Gospel, let us 2) For world leaders, that they will strive to govern with honesty and fairness, let us pray to the Lord. 3) For those facing serious illness as we await the birth of our Lord, may they find comfort in this season of Advent, let us 4) For an end to the hatred and misunderstanding that bring about war and terrorism throughout the world, let us 5) For those who have died, may they enter the fullness of grace and peace in heaven, let us pray to the Lord. PRIEST: Heavenly Father, hear and grant our prayers, through Christ our Lord.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2015 (Lec. 9) 1) Zephaniah 3:14-18a 2) Philippians 4:4-7 3) Luke 3:10-18 THIRD SUNDAY God's love for us is self-giving and unconditional, surpassing human love. Jesus uses words that are analogous to human relationships to describe God's relationship to us: he calls him "Father" and us "sons and daughters." When Jesus uses such words and images, it is important to remember that God s love surpasses all love found in human relationships. God loves us unconditionally, with total giving of self, and desires nothing more than for us to be in love with him and to love others as a sign of that love. The first reading from Zephaniah reminds the Israelites not to be discouraged, for the Lord will rejoice over them and renew them in his love. The second reading reminds us to rejoice in the Lord always. In the Gospel, John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus as he teaches that one mightier than him who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire is coming. PREIST: Knowing that God's love for us is beyond our ability to comprehend, we are confident of the power of that love and offer to him these prayers and needs. 1) May the shepherds of the Church, especially Pope Francis and N our bishop, guide us to life of simplicity as lived by those shepherds who first encountered the Christ Child, let us pray to the Lord. 2) May those who lead nations avoid the temptation to use their power and privilege to build themselves up at the expense of their citizens, let us 3) May we realize that one of the greatest ways we can respond to God's love is to love others, especially those who are hungry, homeless, oppressed or in need, let us 4) May those who are sick experience the healing power and love of Christ, especially through the care and concern we show the, let us 5) May those who have died find eternal rest in the presence of our Father and the Lord Jesus, rejoicing with the angels and saints in the Kingdom, let us PRIEST: In faith we offer all of these prayers to you, beloved Father, confident that you will hear and answer them. We ask this through your son Jesus Christ.

Monday, December 14, 2015 MONDAY (Lec. 187) 1) Numbers 24:2-7, 15-17a - THIRD WEEK 2) Matthew 21:23-27 (OBL. MEM. Saint John of the Cross, Priest and Doctor of the Church) God is the only authority. With the vast array of news outlets and pundits, it seems we are confronted daily with authorities on a wide range of topics. They may not necessarily agree. So who are we to believe? Jesus has been given authority by his Father. He is our one and only source of knowledge. In the first reading Balaam, a seer, offers an oracle about Israel. He recognizes Israel s greatness and states that a star shall advance from Jacob and a staff shall arise from Israel. In the Gospel, the chief priests and elders attempt to entrap Jesus by challenging his authority. Jesus, in turn, questions them. PRIEST: Let us bring our needs before our loving Father, the source of all truth and goodness. 1) For unity in the Church, may she be guided always by the love of the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord. 2) For those in positions of authority, may they always respect the dignity and worth of all those they govern, let us 3) For those who are sick or suffering, may they feel God s healing presence, let us pray to the Lord. 4) For those who struggle with doubt, may they be strengthened by the prayers of this faith community, let us 5) For those who have died, may they be granted eternal life with the angels and saints, let us pray to the Lord. PRIEST: Heavenly Father, we thank you for listening to our prayers and granting what we need, through Christ our Lord.

Tuesday, December 15, 2015 TUESDAY (Lec. 188) 1) Zephaniah 3:1-2, THIRD WEEK 2) Matthew 21:28-32 God is the refuge of sinners, and is always there to lift us when we fall. Mahatma Gandhi once said that If all Christians acted like Christ, the whole world would be Christian. Jesus example of humility and goodness when he walked the earth gives us strength and grace as we seek to follow in his footsteps. In the reading from Zephaniah, the prophet says that the haughty shall not enter the City of God, but, with pure speech, the humble shall call on the name of the Lord and have peace. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the two sons, and says that the tax collectors will inherit the kingdom of God before the Pharisees. PRIEST: Let us cast our cares upon our heavenly Father, who, in his goodness, hears and provides for our needs. 1) For the Church, that she may be blessed with the strength needed to continue her mission of reconciling sinners to God, let us 2) For people throughout the world, that their hearts may be open to receive the wisdom of God and they may begin to live in accordance with the Gospel, let us 3) For those who are not free to practice their religion openly, that God will change the hearts of those who persecute them, let us 4) For our parish community, that we may receive the grace of the Holy Spirit to lead lives that are holy and to worship with sincerity of heart, let us 5) For the faithful departed, that they may come to share eternal life through the mercy of God, let us PREIST: God the Father of mercies, in your compassion hear and answer our prayers in accordance with your will. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Wednesday, December 16, 2015 WEDNESDAY (Lec. 189) 1) Isaiah 45:6c-8, 18, 21c-25 - THIRD WEEK 2) Luke 7:18b-23 God reveals himself to us through the beauty of creation and through his son, Jesus. God's greatness is not confined; it is readily evident throughout all creation, from the grandeur of the mountains to the beauty of the skies. God brings us justice, mercy, and healing. Nonetheless, it seems to be human nature to doubt that God exists. But through the beauty of creation and the way he has fully revealed himself through Christ he can be known. The reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah tells us of God's great deeds. He brings well-being and safety. All the ends of the earth shall recognize his greatness and declare him God. In today s reading from the Gospel of Luke, we hear of John the Baptist instructing his disciples to go and ask Jesus if he is the promised Messiah and savior. PRIEST: Let us bring our petitions before the Lord, confident in his abundant mercies. 1) That members of the Church continue to preach the Gospel on earth and shine a light on the darkness of sin, let us 2) That civic and world leaders may work for lasting peace by enacting policies that meet the needs of the people they govern, let us 3) That those who are persecuted for their faith in Christ persevere through their suffering, let us 4) That those who suffer depression or mental illness receive compassionate care and medical assistance so that they may live fuller lives, let us 5) That those who have died come to share eternal life in heaven, let us PRIEST: Merciful God, hear our petitions and grant what we need to be a people united to you. This we pray in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thursday, December 17, 2015 THURSDAY (Lec. 193) 1) Genesis 49:2, THIRD WEEK 2) Matthew 1:1-17 What will be our legacy? Many of us work hard to create a legacy, something that will bring our name into the future when we are no longer present to do so. As Catholic Christians, however, we are part of an eternal legacy. No earthly legacy will be as powerful as our inheritance as sons and daughters of God through Jesus Christ. In the first reading, Jacob foretells his son Judah s future. Judah is told that the scepter and mace shall never depart from him. The Gospel reveals that Jacob s words are fulfilled in the birth of Christ, who is a descendant of Judah through Joseph. Indeed, we who trust in the Lord are blessed, for he always fulfills his promises. PRIEST: Let us humbly ask God, our Father, to look with mercy upon us and our needs. 1) That the Church may continue to bring the message of salvation to the world, let us pray to the Lord. 2) That the people of the world open themselves to the coming of Christ this Christmas, let us pray to the Lord. 3) That those who are depressed or lonely may find comfort in their brothers and sisters, and peace in God s love, let us 4) That those who are sick may find healing and help through our parish community, let us 5) That those who have died may be cleansed and purified of their sins and may enter into eternal life, let us PRIEST: Loving Father, in your goodness we ask that you hear and answer the prayers that we offer through Christ our Lord.

Friday, December 18, 2015 FRIDAY (Lec. 194) 1) Jeremiah 23:5-8 - THIRD WEEK 2) Matthew 1:18-25 In the midst of Advent s stillness, we receive the blessed gift of God s presence. The journey of life is often chaotic. We need God s healing presence to navigate through it. We can pause our lives today, enter the quiet of the Advent season and listen with open hearts to God s word. As we do so, we discover that God gives us the guidance and strength we need to deal with life s uncertainties. Today s first reading from the prophet Jeremiah reminds us that God is present at all times and always brings his promises to fulfillment. The Gospel tells of Joseph, who, discovering that Mary was pregnant, planned to divorce her quietly. But having received a vision from an angel, he was obedient to the will of God and took Mary into his home. PRIEST: Our God is always with us. Let us open our hearts to him and present our needs with confidence. 1) That the Church may continue to bring the Gospel message to the ends of the earth, let us 2) That elected officials will support just laws that uphold the dignity of all people, born and unborn, let us 3) That young people will respond generously in choosing vocations to religious and married life, let us 4) That our hearts may be open to the Spirit so that we may boldly and courageously work for peace in our world, let us 5) That those who have died may come to share eternal life in heaven, let us PRIEST: Almighty God and Father, hear and answer our prayers, for we offer them to you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Saturday, December 19, 2015 SATURDAY (Lec. 195) 1) Judges 13:2-7, 24-25a - THIRD WEEK 2) Luke 1:5-25 God answers prayers in his time. Often we become discouraged if we don t receive something we deeply desire. Both readings today demonstrate that God answers prayers in his time, and in ways that build up the kingdom. It is worth asking if our deepest desires reflect our ends or God s will. In the first reading, Manoah and his wife will bear a son who will begin the deliverance of Israel from the power of the Philistines. That child is Samson. In the Gospel, Elizabeth and Zechariah, advanced in years, are told that their prayers for a child have been answered. Elizabeth will bear a son, who is John the Baptist. PRIEST: Let us bring our prayers and petitions with confidence before our merciful and gracious Father. 1) For the needs of the Church, may she be a refuge for sinners and a shelter for lost souls, let us 2) For leaders of governments and institutions, that they care for the needs of the poor, respect the sanctity of life and strive for peace, let us 3) For all those who suffer from addiction, may they experience true freedom in Christ, let us 4) For those who are lonely or depressed this Advent season, may they find hope in the love of their brothers and sisters and peace in Christ, let us 5) For all those who have gone before us, that they will come to share eternal life in heaven, let us PRIEST: Father in heaven, hear the prayers of your people offered here today. For we offer them to you through Christ our Lord.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2015 (Lec. 12) 1) Micah 5:1-4a 2) Hebrews 10:5-10 3) Luke 1:39-45 FOURTH SUNDAY God s ways are not our ways. The readings today demonstrate that conventional wisdom is not true: a mighty Savior comes from a lowly place, death on a cross brings life, and an old woman feels her child leap in her womb as a young pregnant virgin greets her. In the final days of Advent, let us put conventional wisdom aside and be attentive to the mystery and wonder of God s ways. In the first reading, Micah prophesies that the one who is to be the ruler in Israel will come from the lowly clan of Bethlehem-Ephrathah. The Letter to the Hebrews recounts that through the sacrifice of Christ s body, we have been consecrated. In the Gospel, Mary, who is pregnant with Jesus, goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth tells Mary she is blessed among women. PRIEST: As children of God, let us bring our needs and the needs of the world to him, trusting in his power and love. 1) That the Church, the Body of Christ, may continue to courageously spread the message of the Gospel and the mysteries of faith to the world, let us 2) That the world may be a safer place for all children, and that as we prepare to celebrate Christ's birth, we may be reminded that every child is a gift from God, let us 3) That those who are alone or grieving at this time of year may be consoled by the evidence of God's love for them through the compassion of their brothers and sisters, let us 4) That all of us here may be blessed as we reach out to others in love and generosity to manifest Christ's presence in the world, let us 5) That those who have died may come to see God face to face in heaven, let us PREIST: Heavenly Father, giver of all good things, hear our petitions and provide for our needs. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Monday, December 21, 2015 MONDAY (Lec. 197) 1) Song of Songs 2: FOURTH WEEK or Zephaniah 3:14-18a (Opt. Mem. 2) Luke 1:39-45 Saint Peter Canisius, Priest and Doctor of the Church) God meets us where we are. Much like the lover in the Song of Songs, our God comes to meet us and we, like Elizabeth, ask ourselves, How does this happen to me? God, in a generous act of love, became incarnate to dwell among us. Blessed are the people he has chosen for his own. The reading from the Song of Songs tells of the beloved calling to the lover: Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away let me see your face. In the Gospel, Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, and the babe in Elizabeth s womb leapt for joy. In her delight, Elizabeth asks, How does this happen that the mother of my Lord should come to visit me? PRIEST: Confident of God s mercy, let us offer our petitions to our loving Father. 1) That the Church and the faithful may be renewed in the mission of love and evangelization in order to bring the Gospel message to all, let us 2) That the people of the world may open their hearts to the light of Christ, and come to have abundant life and peace in his love, let us 3) That the grace of the Holy Spirit may come upon those awaiting the birth of a child and grant them peace from all anxiety, let us 4) That those traveling during the Christmas season may safely reach their destinations, and return home refreshed in body and spirit, let us 5) That those who have died may come to have eternal life in heaven, let us PRIEST: Almighty God and Father, hear our prayers and grant us the grace needed to remain steadfast in faith. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Tuesday, December 22, 2015 TUESDAY (Lec. 198) 1) Samuel 1: FOURTH WEEK 2) Luke 1:46-56 The Almighty has done great things indeed! In the readings today, two women have been granted wonderful blessings. Both recognize from whom the blessings come. In this recognition, both respond in gratitude. Often we can receive blessings in our lives as if we are entitled to them. But remember that everything we have is a blessing from the Almighty. In today s first reading, Hannah presents her only child, Samuel, to the Lord. She had prayed that God would give her a child. When her prayer was answered, she recognized the blessing by offering the child back to God. In the Gospel, Mary offers her prayer of gratitude and praise to God. She recognizes that God has done, and will continue to do, great things for his people. PRIEST: Trusting that God continues to do great things for us, let us join together in offering our prayers to our loving Father in heaven. 1) For Pope Francis, our bishops, priests and deacons, may they continue to call the faithful to be grateful for the blessings God pours out on his Church, let us 2) For the leaders of nations, may they be mindful of the blessings the Almighty has bestowed on their nations, and be inspired to demonstrate gratitude and good stewardship of those blessings, let us 3) For all who suffer from addiction, through the Holy Spirit may they turn to God for the grace and strength needed to begin their journey to healing and recovery, let us 4) For all those gathered here today, as we continue our prayer of gratitude in this Mass, may we be strengthened to bear witness to the Almighty and his many blessings, let us 5) For the faithful departed, may they be welcomed by the Almighty into the heavenly kingdom, let us PRIEST Almighty, ever-living God, graciously hear the prayers we offer. Please continue to bless those gathered before you today by granting these prayers according to your will. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Wednesday, December 23, 2015 WEDNESDAY (Lec. 199) 1) Malachi 3:1-4, FOURTH WEEK 2) Luke 1:57-66 (Opt. Mem. Saint John of Kanty, Priest) John the Baptist is born, and given the name God chose for him. At John the Baptist s circumcision, Zechariah, his mute father, wrote that his name was to be John. With that, Zechariah could speak again. The miracles surrounding John s birth foretold his special role of prophet. At baptism we, too, assumed Christ s prophetic mission to give witness to the truth of the Gospel. The first reading tells that God will send a messenger to prepare the way for the coming of the promised Messiah. In the Gospel, Elizabeth, John s mother, rejoices when he is born. At his circumcision, she states, He is to be called John. When Zechariah, John s mute father, confirms this, his speech is restored. Those who heard these things recognized that God had special plans for John. PRIEST: Confident that our heavenly Father hears us, let us pray for our needs and those of the world. 1) That our Church leaders may continue to be fearless in preaching the message of Jesus and faithful in living the Gospel, let us 2) That countries throughout the world may safeguard and promote peace as we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, let us 3) That the poor, the lonely and the sad may find peace in the birth of our Lord and be encouraged by the generous help of others, let us 4) That we who are gathered here may prepare our hearts to welcome our Lord through prayer, sacrifice and repentance, let us 5) That those who have died may enjoy the peace of eternal life, let us PRIEST: Good and gracious God, hear and answer our prayers which we offer to you through Christ our Lord.

Thursday, December 24, 2015 (Lec. 200) Mass in the Morning: 1) 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 2) Luke 1:67-79 THURSDAY - FOURTH WEEK The appointed time has come. This verse taken from the Entrance Antiphon says it all. The appointed time is upon us: to celebrate anew the birth of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, born of woman into this world in humble circumstances. In the reading from Samuel, King David tells the prophet Nathan that he desires to build a house for the Lord. Nathan tells David that God will raise up heir after heir, and make his kingdom stand firm forever. In the Gospel, we hear the Canticle of Zechariah and how he blesses the Lord with praise and thanksgiving. He prophesies how his son will proclaim the way of the Lord. PRIEST: Let us offer our prayers to our heavenly Father for ourselves and for all those in our parish community. 1) For our pope, bishops, priests and all those who serve the Church and bring the message of Christ to a waiting world, let us 2) For all government leaders, that they may always look for peaceful solutions to problems and reject violence and war, let us 3) For all those who feel depressed or lonely, that they will feel the healing touch of Christ in their lives at this time of year and always, let us 4) For our parish family, that we may celebrate Christmas with gratitude for the greatest gift of all Jesus Christ, let us 5) For all who have died, that they may enjoy eternal life, and that those who mourn them may have peace, let us PRIEST: Loving God, hear the prayers we bring before you today. Help us to be open to your word and give us the grace to stay faithful to you at all times. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Three Commentaries are given for the Solemnity of Christmas: Vigil, Night, and Day ~ Holy Day of Obligation. CHRISTMAS, VIGIL (Lec. 13) 1) Isaiah 62:1-5 2) Acts 13:16-17, ) Matthew 1:1-25 or 1:18-25 THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD - SOLEMNITY (Vigil Mass) God s covenant reigns forever. God has not forgotten his chosen people. The promises he has made are fulfilled in Christ. And in Christ, God makes a new covenant with all peoples for every generation. In the first reading, Isaiah describes the time of Israel s vindication and glory. The Lord delights in her. In the reading from Acts, Saint Paul tells the Jews that in Jesus Christ, God fulfilled his promise of a Savior through the line of David. The Gospel recounts Jesus lineage through Joseph s line, and tells the story of Jesus birth. PRIEST: Heavenly Father, on this evening when we celebrate the coming of the Messiah, we have confidence in your divine providence as we place our prayers before you. 1) For the Holy Father, all the clergy, religious and consecrated persons, may they work tirelessly to spread the kingdom of God, let us 2) For the leaders of our country, may they be people of peace and seek to lead in justice and love, let us 3) For all those who have wandered from the faith, may they return to the loving arms of their Father, let us 4) For each one of us as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, may we have a greater desire to evangelize and spread the good news of Christmas, let us 5) For those among us who mourn the loss of a loved one during this holy season, may they find comfort in the newborn King, let us PRIEST: Father, we are grateful that you sent us your Son, Jesus, to be our redeemer. Please hear and answer our petitions that we offer in his name.

CHRISTMAS, NIGHT (Lec. 14) 1) Isaiah 9:1-6 2) Titus 2: ) Luke 2:1-14 THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD - SOLEMNITY (Mass at Night) Christ entered the world to bring us peace and salvation. Tonight, we celebrate the birth of our Savior. The prophecies concerning his birth have been fulfilled. He brings us the peace that allows us to share in the graces of God, to live our lives free of sin and to grow in holiness. So let us open our hearts that we may receive the healing and peace that Jesus came to give. Luke relates the birth of Christ, who is greater than even the great kings David and Solomon. In the first reading, Isaiah prophesies the birth of a Son, whose name shall be Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. In the second reading from Titus, Paul says that the grace of God trains us to renounce worldly passions and await the blessed hope of the coming of Christ. The Gospel tells the story of the nativity and the angels appearing to the shepherds. PRIEST: With hearts filled with gladness as we celebrate the birth of the Lord, let us offer our prayers for our needs and those of the world. 1) That the Church continue faithfully to bring the good news of Christ s birth to the world, let us 2) That those in positions of authority will work for justice so that all may live in peace, let us pray to the Lord. 3) That as we gather with family and friends, may there be a spirit of mercy and a renewal of the bonds of love and peace, let us 4) That those who suffer ills of body or spirit find Christ s comfort in their brothers and sisters, let us 5) That all the dead, especially those of this parish, may have eternal rest in heaven, let us pray to the Lord. PRIEST: Merciful Father, you gave us the gift of your Son so that we may know your peace. Please hear and answer our petitions that we make through Jesus Christ our Lord.

CHRISTMAS, DAY THE NATIVITY (Lec. 16) OF THE LORD 1) Isaiah 52: SOLEMNITY 2) Hebrews 1:1-6 (Mass During the Day) 3) John 1:1-18 or 1:1-5, 9-14 For unto us is born a savior Christ the Lord. On this day, we celebrate in a particular way that God is truly with us. Through a mighty act of love, in Christ s incarnation, the Word takes flesh. God sent his only son into the world so that we might live through him. (CCC 458) In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah assures Israel that the Lord comforts his people and will redeem them. The reading from Hebrews conveys that in times past God spoke to Israel through prophets. Now in these last days he speaks through a Son whom he made heir of all things. The Gospel proclaims that the Word became flesh. Through him all those who believe in his name are made children of God. PRIEST: Celebrating anew the birth of our savior, Jesus, we confidently bring our prayers to our loving Father. 1) For Pope Francis, that he may continue to lead the faithful in the way of truth and be strengthened in his sufferings, let us 2) For the light of Christ to illumine all government leaders to work for peace among all people, let us 3) For children, especially the abused, abandoned and orphaned, that they may find love in the arms of their heavenly Father, let us 4) For our parish family, that we may be filled with the graces needed to continue to preach the good news of the newborn King, let us 5) For the faithful departed, that they may see God face to face in heaven, let us PRIEST: Almighty God, we place all our needs before you. We ask you to hear and answer them, for we offer them through your Son, the Prince of Peace.

Saturday, December 26, 2015 (Lec. 696) 1) Acts 6:8-10; 7: ) Matthew 10:17-22 SAINT STEPHEN, THE FIRST MARTYR - FEAST Being a Christian is not easy. Both readings speak of trusting the Holy Spirit in times of persecution. Christ promises that the Spirit will speak through us when we face trials. You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved. We can face any challenge if we are open to the Holy Spirit. In the first reading, Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, works wonders and speaks with wisdom. Those listening become angry and stone him. In the Gospel, Jesus assures his followers not to worry about what they will say because the Holy Spirit will give them the words. PRIEST: With faith in God s saving love, let us turn to him with our needs. 1) For the members of the body of Christ who are persecuted for the Gospel, may the Holy Spirit strengthen them in their faithful witness, let us 2) For people separated from friends and loved ones during this Christmas season, may they find comfort in the newborn King, let us 3) For people suffering from terminal illnesses, may the Lord draw them close to himself in their suffering, let us 4) For our parish community, that we may be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, let us 5) For those who have died, that they may enjoy eternal life in heaven, let us PRIEST: Heavenly Father, we give you thanks during this Christmas season for the gift of your Son. Please hear and answer our prayers that we offer in his name.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2015 THE HOLY FAMILY (Lec. 17) OF JESUS, MARY 1) Sirach 3:2-7, AND JOSEPH or 1 Samuel 1:20-22, FEAST 2) Colossians 3:12-21 or 3:12-17 or 1 John 3:1-2, ) Luke 2:41-52 Family life is holy. Members of a family are called to honor and respect each other. It s in our family where we first learn this way of holiness. Pope Saint John Paul II once reminded us that the Holy Family is the prototype and example for all Christian families. In the first reading from Sirach, the prophet speaks of the blessings for those who honor their parents. In Colossians, Paul urges that all be done in the name of Jesus, with love and thanksgiving, and that the word of Christ may dwell in us richly. Luke tells the story of Jesus being lost and then found by his parents in the Temple. PRIEST: Let us pray to our Father for the needs of our brothers and sisters throughout the world. 1) That the Church, may have the graces necessary to continue to preach the Good News, let us 2) That world leaders will work to protect the rights of all to worship freely, let us 3) That young people will courageously and faithfully seek out and live their vocations in life, let us 4) That the sick and elderly be cared for with love, compassion and respect, let us 5) That the faithful departed come to share eternal life in heaven, let us PRIEST: God of love, we ask that you hear and answer our prayers in accord with your holy will. Through Christ our Lord.
