1 The First Sunday in Lent February 22, 2015 On Ash Wednesday the church began its journey toward baptismal immersion in the death and resurrection of Christ. This year, the Sundays in Lent lead us to focus on five covenants God makes in the Hebrew Scriptures and to use them as lenses through which to view baptism. First Peter connects the way God saved Noah's family in the flood with the way God saves us through the water of baptism. The baptismal covenant is made with us individually, but the new life we are given in baptism is for the sake of the whole world.

P Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Silence for reflection and self-examination C Almighty God, Merciful Father: I, a troubled and penitent sinner, confess to you all my sins and iniquities with which I have offended you and for which I justly deserve your punishment. But I am sorry for them, and repent of them, and pray for your boundless mercy. For the sake of the suffering and death of your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being; forgive my sins, give me your Holy Spirit for the amendment of my sinful life, and bring me to life everlasting. Renew us in the gift of baptism. May your holy angels be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 4 First Reading: Genesis 9:8-17 8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 "As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth." 12 God said, "This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." 17 God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth." Second Reading: 1 Peter 3: For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20 who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. 21 And baptism, which t his prefigured, now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. C Glory to you, O Lord. 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." 12And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near, repent, and believe in the good news." 8 Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. You created us in your image; and in the mystery of your great love for us you sent your only Son, Jesus Christ, born of Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. Led by that Spirit, he was tempted as we are tempted. He proclaimed your forgiveness to sinners; he loved even his enemies. Despised and rejected, he bore the alienation of the world as he stretched out his arms on the cross; and by this all-sufficient sacrifice he has drawn all people to himself, giving his life as a ransom for many. As we gather in his name and celebrate his testament, send your Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be for us the very body and blood of your Son, Christ Jesus, redeemer of the world. 10

By your Son s life giving passion and death, his resurrection and ascension into glory, our Lord Jesus continually intercedes for us and for all he has claimed as his own. As we now share together this Bread of Life and this Cup of Salvation, unite us with all your faithful people in the forgiveness of sins. Bring us at length to that eternal celebration of life at the Lamb s high feast. C Through Him, with Him, in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. The Liturgy Our worship is the historic liturgy of the Christian Church - a celebration of Word and Sacrament, the means through which God gives forgiveness, life and salvation. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated in accordance with the understanding of the Lutheran Confessions that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine. Approach the chancel rail by the center aisle as a place becomes vacant. Dip the bread in the first cup or drink from the common chalice. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the Blessed Sacrament. Others may come or be brought forward for a blessing. Our primary worship books are found in the pews. The Lutheran Book of Worship (noted LBW inside the bulletin) is the green hardback hymnal. The With One Voice (noted WOV inside the bulletin) is the blue softback hymnal. A hand-held hearing aid system is available and can be used anywhere in the church. Children are always welcome at worship! We value the participation of our children in worship! As full members of the church, children participate in the worship service. They listen to God s Word, gather at the Lord s table, serve as readers, acolytes, choir members, and more. Feel free to take children in and out as necessary. For parents who desire nursery care, care is usually available for children who are infants through pre-school age. Please ask an usher.
