Message from our Holy Cross Administration This week, we celebrate Epiphany. It is the culmination of the Advent/Christmas Season and it is the last of the Twelve Days of Christmas, which are counted from the evening of December 25th until the morning of January 6th. The term epiphany means "to show" or "to reveal." It remembers the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child. The Wise Men or Magi who brought gifts to the infant Jesus were the first Gentiles to acknowledge Jesus as "King" and the first to "show" or "reveal" Jesus to a wider world as the Christ. This act of worship by the Magi was one of the first signs that Jesus came for all people, of all nations, of all races, and that the work of God in the world would not be limited to only a few. Epiphany is a time for us to remember to reach out to others and show Jesus as the Savior of all people. Mme Lorraine Sylvestre Principal M. Ed Jean Assistant Principal 1

Canadian Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) Gr. 6 During the first two weeks of January, the Grade 6 students will be writing the Canadian Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) exams. The primary purpose of using standardized achievement tests, like the CTBS, is to provide information that can be used to improve instruction. This achievement battery is a collection of tests in several subject areas that have all been standardized with the same group of students. The CTBS identify student achievement in core subject areas including vocabulary, reading, and mathematics. The results are used to build an overall learning profile of the students. It is important that your child is well rested and takes these tests seriously. Thank you for taking some time to discuss this with your child. 2

Grade 4 and 5 Visit Telus World of Science During the last week of December, the Grades 4 and 5 students had an exciting time at Telus World of Science. Both grades partook in a workshop; the Grade 5s built an electric car, whilst the Grade 4s built a variety of construction projects that used simple machines. We saw them build elevators, merry-go-rounds, wishing wells and many others. Beyond the learning happening in the workshops, the students had the opportunity to view the movie Dream Big, in the Imax theatre. This movie provided lots of information about the future of engineering in our world. We heard the story of three vastly different people, from diverse backgrounds, who became engineers and created great things. The students also had the opportunity to visit all the various exhibits in place at the TWOS. Some enjoyed the learning that could happen in the feature gallery, while others went through it very quickly. The Science Garage and the Body Fantastic were fan favorites. We would like to thank all our parent volunteers who showed up to help us! 3

ADVENT Liturgical Celebration Our Holy Cross Community was truly blessed this year to start our Advent journey with a liturgy celebrated by Fr. Dean from St. John the Evangelist parish. The grade 2 class of Mme Lien organized the liturgy and led us in song and prayer, while Fr. Dean enlightened us with his words of hope and encouragement. As he spoke with us about the Gospel of the day, he shared with us the importance of taking the time to prepare ourselves for Christmas by building a strong foundation of prayer and good works. 4

Hope Mission The grade 3A and 3B students participated in a wonderful act of kindness during the week of December 3, as the Advent season began. Each child decorated a Christmas tree that will serve as decoration during the Hope Mission Christmas dinner. The students hope to bring Christmas Joy to The Hope Mission which is not-for-profit Christian social care agency caring for impoverished and homeless men, women and children in Alberta. ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MY TWO FRONT TEETH! During Advent this year, we asked all our students to respond to the wonderful old song, All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth by bringing in dental hygiene items to be shared with women and children in need at WINhouse. When families go to WINhouse looking for shelter and assistance, they often arrive with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. Our donations were delivered on Dec. 18 and we were informed that the WINhouse clients will be enjoying good dental health for over a year because of the items that we donated. Well done Holy Cross!! 6

Christmas Concerts La Casse-noisette / The Nutcracker It was great to see so many families attending the Elementary Christmas Concerts on December 12 and 13! The concerts were based on The Nutcracker theme and were an amazing experience for all involved. There were some strong acting performances, some delightful dance numbers, some exciting and creative musical pieces and a wonderful variety of melodious songs! This would not have been possible without the leadership and commitment of Mme Katia Hnidan, along with the support of Mme Kayla Fuller, Mme Julia Tremblay, and Mme Sandra Perrin. Thank you to all the families who joined us and a special thank you to the parents who brought in food to share during the social after the concerts. Your thoughtfulness and generosity are very much appreciated! 7

Hour of Code During the week of December 3 rd, students took part in Hour of Code This is a worldwide event to celebrate computer science, starting with one-hour coding activities. Students in Grade 1 tried the Coding for Carrots activity as an introduction to coding. 8

Coffee, Tea & IB! Grade 5 parents and guardians are invited to an information session to learn about the Exhibition that their child will be participating in this year, as the culminating project in their PYP experience. This project encourages collaborative inquiry through an authentic process. The information session for Grade 5 parents will be held in the réseau on January 16, 2019 at 18:30.. IB Evaluation Visit On December 3 rd and 4 th, Holy Cross Académie Internationale welcomed two IB evaluators from SÉBIQ ( La société des écoles internationale du Québec) to complete an evaluation of our IB Middle Years Programme. As an IB school, we are evaluated every 5 years to ensure that the standards and practices of the programme are being maintained. The evaluators had some very positive comments about the programme, the staff, the school community, and of course, the students and their amazing work. We would like to thank all of the teachers, parents, and students who have been supportive of our IB program over the years and especially at this time. And a very special thank you to our IB Coordinator, Mme Julia Tremblay for her endless hours of organization and encouragement for all of us as we prepared for and lived through the IB Evaluation Visit. INFORMATION EVENING FOR NEW REGISTRATIONS Holy Cross Académie Internationale will be holding an Information Evening for our Early Learning and Junior High programs for the school year on January 30, 2019 at 19:00. Encourage your friends and neighbors to come out and learn more about our programs - you are our best advocates! 9

FATHER MICHAEL MIREAU YOUTH FAITH DAY Grade 8 students across the Edmonton Catholic School district come together in loving memory of Father Michael Mireau for the District-wide Youth Faith Day at the SHAW Conference Center on February 4, Our Grade 8 s will be proudly representing Holy Cross school at this incredible event. The day includes presentations from Steve Angrisano, an internationally renowned Catholic singer and inspirational speaker. The students will also celebrate Mass with Father Paul Kavanagh, the Catholic Education Representative for the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton. Our Grade 8 students will leave Holy Cross at 8:45 AM and will return at 2:45 PM. They will need to bring a lunch that does not need to be warmed up since there are no microwaves on site and there will not be lunch provided nor any time to buy a lunch at the event. It s going to be an awesome day! Elementary Science Night Holy Cross will be hosting an Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta Elementary Science Night on February 26th, This is an evening of fun, hands-on activities and demonstrations! 13 Alberta Education Accountability Pillar Survey As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success. The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments of student learning. From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. In February, students in Grades 4-9 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Dene, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly. Survey results will be available to school authorities in May, and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports. Thank you to our parents for taking the time to provide feedback to Alberta Education. 13

January 2019 Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. ~Isaiah 43:18-19~ The new year brings new beginnings and new opportunities. In this passage from Isaiah, the prophet is telling the people that God s great acts in their lives are so wonderful that they need not dwell in the past but look forward to their new path. Essentially, he is telling us not to focus on things of old, but to look forward with excitement to the new journey ahead. This is a great way to start 2019; move forward to positive places with enthusiasm, joy, and peace knowing that God is with you! As always, January marks the time when we start to plan for the next school year. It is a time for families to look at registering for Early Learning, Junior, or Senior High. It is extremely important for those families who have students who will need to transition to a new level or program in the upcoming school year to research their options with Edmonton Catholic Schools and to go out and visit the sites that they are interested in. Our website has a wealth of information for families. Beginning the third week of January, when you click on the Open House Information link on our homepage you will find our 2019 Guide to Schools and Open House dates. You will also find many useful tools including our School Locator and Kindergarten Calculator. 17

Edmonton Catholic Schools has developed a new resource to support self-regulation both at home and in the classroom. Our children need the ability to self-regulate in order to be ready. Children need to be ready to attend and inhibit impulses. They need support and time to understand how to regulate so that they can build skills, learn, participate and socialize. Learn the special FOCUS Sequence that integrates research-based strategies into a single sequence of regulating activities that can be done with any age, across any environment and all in about 5 minutes! We will be hosting a Parent Night on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 6:30-8:00pm at St. Anthony Centre ( Avenue). To register, please visit or Yvonne.Casey@ecsd.net. Our annual Faith Development Day for staff will take place on Tuesday, February 5, All our schools and sites will be closed so that our staff may gather together to continue our lifelong journey of faith formation and to celebrate Eucharist together. As you contemplate all that the new year holds for you and establish your dreams and goals, I leave you with an encouragement from Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation Rejoice and Be Glad : "The important thing is that each believer discern his or her own path, that they bring out the very best of themselves, the most personal gifts that God has placed in their hearts." (Rejoice and Be Glad, 11) Have a wonderful 2019! Sincerely, Joan Carr Superintendent 18

Theophany - CHRIST'S BAPTISM - FEAST OF LIGHTS The Baptism of our Lord, Jesus Christ Jesus came as a "great light" to those who languished in darkness. No other word describes Christ as accurately as the word light. He comes as a light to those who sit in the darkness of despair. He lights candles of love, joy, forgiveness, peace, and meaning in the lives of people today. In the early Church, Theophany - the day of Christ's baptism - became the day on which the converts to Christianity were received into the Church through baptism. Each newly baptized person held the baptismal candle during the liturgy. Christians who had already been baptized brought their baptismal candles to church on this day to renew their baptismal vows; to renew the commitment to Christ which they had made at baptism. As a result, everyone in the congregation held a lighted candle on the feast of Theophany. The churches became the sea of lights. For this reason, this day came to be called the Feast of Lights. The baptismal candle, in the early Church, was a symbol that the one who was baptized had received Christ who is the Light of the world. The candle would be kept by the one baptized and then brought to Church on the anniversary of one's baptism, the feast of Theophany and for the Easter Vigil liturgy. If the person was married, the same candle was used at the wedding. If he was ordained, he would light the candle at his ordination. When the final hour of life approached, it was lit again as the soul went forth to meet the Lord. The baptismal candle was a constant reminder for the Christian to live and die by the light of Christ. The baptismal candle may be compared to the lamps used in the story of the maidens who awaited the arrival of Christ the Bridegroom in the darkness of the night. When the newly baptized person was given the lighted candle, she was urged to keep it to meet Christ at his return, like the wise maidens who kept their lamps burning for the coming of the Bridegroom. Thus the candle becomes a symbol of the perseverance of the baptized soul until Christ's return. Among the ancient Greeks the runner who had won the race was not the one who crossed the line in the shortest time, but the one who crossed it in the least time with his candle still burning. Our goal as Christians is that we may cross the line into eternity with the light of our baptismal faith still shining brightly. 19

Christ Himself is the light. His light shines today proclaiming to all of us: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life" (John 8:12). The light that God gives us for our present darkness was expressed so well by Louise Haskins: I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: "Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown." And he replied: "Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way." Resources: A Byzantine Rite. Liturgical Year. Julian J. Katrij, OSBM. Basilian Fathers Publication. Detroit, Christ is Baptized! In the River Jordan! Fr. Julian Bilyj District Chaplain News from St. John the Evangelist Parish Sacramental Preparation Is your child ready to celebrate first Reconciliation and first Eucharist (Communion), or to be Confirmed? Our preparation programs are full for this year (and have already started!), but watch the next newsletters for information about registering your child for It is never too late to prepare, so don t worry if your child is older than the common ages for these sacraments. Have you received these Sacraments yourself? Many adults were not Confirmed when they were young, and now feel the call to complete their initiation into the Catholic Church. If you would like to prepare for any of the Sacraments, please contact us. Baptism Preparation Our next Baptism preparation class is on January 23, 7-9 pm, in the upper hall. Please call the Parish Office to let us know you are planning to come. Parents are required to 20

take a course to help understand what it means to be baptized, and what they are committing themselves and their child to in this sacrament. We walk through the ritual of Baptism in the Church so you will know what to expect. Godparents are encouraged to come to the class too. For more information, please check our Parish website under the Sacraments tab. Please call us if you have any questions, especially about baptizing older children. Marriage Would you like your civil marriage to be blessed, or are you in a common-law relationship and would like to get married? Please contact us to see how we can help you prepare for the sacrament of Matrimony. Children s Liturgy of the Word Are you finding it a challenge to bring your children to Mass? Our 10:30 am Mass is late enough for a bit of a sleep-in, time for breakfast and not rush to get to Mass. Your children are invited to go to their own Liturgy of the Word while you stay in the Church and have some time in Mass for yourself to really be attentive to the Readings and Homily. The children return to the Church during the Offertory Collection for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Junior group is for age 4 grade 1 or 2, and the Senior group is for grades 2-6. They hear and discuss child-friendly versions of the Mass readings and pray. The Junior group usually does a craft too. Younger children should be able to sit and listen to the Gospel, and respond to the Leaders. If your child is very active, please accompany them. Parents are welcome to join their children, and help is always appreciated, especially when there are large numbers of children. Blessings, Fr.
