1 Spring 2018 Spiritual Formation Group Catalog Group 1: Community on the Island of Misfit Toys Special Criteria: Freshman Academy Students Only Leader: Vicki Quirarte Description: Do you ever feel like you don't belong at Jessup? While there a number of reasons you may feel "misfitted," there is one central truth that binds us: We are here at Jessup because God willed it. Come enjoy community and explore biblical truths in often unconventional ways - to meet the unique needs of those who feel they have landed on the island of misfit toys. Group 2: Book Study: Grace for the Good Girl Meeting Day: Monday Time: 9:30 AM - 10:20 AM Special Criteria: Women Only, Book Study Leader: Emily Hill Description: We will be studying Emily Freeman's Grace for the Good Girl together and learning about how to let go of the try-hard life. Group 3: Jesus' Love: Receiving the Abundant Life Leader: Justin LeBlanc Description: Jesus says that no one can connect to the Father of Creation apart from a connection with His Son. This series digs into the meaning of some crucial practices Jesus taught us to keep, and how doing so infuses life and joy into us and connects us with the Father and the people whom He made.

2 Group 4: Jesus' Joy: Training in the Family Business Meeting Day: Thursdays Time: 4:00-5:00 PM Leader: Justin LeBlanc Description: The single most profitable offer of Jesus is often given the least attention: "Follow Me". This series presents "My Father's Business" that Jesus said He must be about, opportunities He said to look for, and techniques He, His apostles, and missionaries since have used to capitalize on those opportunities and see sustainable exponential growth. Group 5: Student Ambassador SFG Time: 4:00-5:00 PM Special Criteria: Student Ambassadors Only Leader: Hanna Sanchez Description: All Student Ambassadors (or those wanting to join the program) are welcome to join this Spiritual Formation Group. We will be studying what it means to provide excellent customer service and develop our professional growth in a biblically-based and Christ-glorifying way. Group 6: Dealing Biblically with Everyday Life Issues Meeting Day: Thursdays Leader: Rick and Dianne Graham Description: We will explore God's Word and principles as we talk about how they look in real life. Some of the topics will include expectations, doubt, conflict resolution, complaining and looking into the character of God. Group 7: Book Study: Beneath Broken Machines, Book Study Leader: PC Walker Description: Embark on a search for the heart that still beats for you. Embrace the wonder and awe of the ridiculous love of God that has always been for you. Encounter

3 the heart of the gospel, which is the heart of Jesus beneath all of your pain, failure, and shame. Group 8: Women of the Bible Meeting Day: Thursdays Time: 1:00-2:00 PM Special Criteria: Business Majors Only Leader: Erin Hill Description: The goal of this SFG is to explore Women of the Bible. We will be exploring their stories in the Bible while discussing how their trials and triumphs relate to our current lives. Group 9: Why I Do What I Do Time: 4:00-5:00 PM Special Criteria: Men Only Leader: Jim Jessup Description: "Why I do what I do:" A discussion of God's principles for abundant life, decisions that we make, and how those decisions affect our present and future personally and in relationships. Group 10: Village Women SFG Special Criteria: Women Village Residents Only Leader: Becky Yaholkovsky Description: This Spiritual Formation Group is open to all women who live in the Village and want to connect with one another and go deeper with each other as we study the armor of God, as described in Ephesians 6. Over the course of our semester together we will meditate on Scripture, read devotionals, and share life together. All are welcome! Group 11: Held Up, Not Called Out Special Criteria: Male Tiffin Residents Only Leader: Spencer Slater

4 Description: This is a men's accountability group. We will hold one another accountable to the people God has designed us to be. There will be an expectation of vulnerability and trust. We will compare our actual walks with Christ with the ones the Bible calls us to. We will be exploring scripture regarding lust, pride, selfishness, greed, and dishonesty. The goal is to develop a more honest view of ourselves, and to see our lives through the lens of Christ. "Accountability is NOT primarily others calling you out on your sin, but others calling you up to the person you are in Christ" -Luke Gilkerson Group 12: Walk With Me Meeting Day: Fridays Time: 11:00 AM Leader: Brittany Knowles Description: We will go through a study called "The Bridge to Racial Unity" to discuss how believers should treat one another. Our goal is to create a safe environment to talk about cultural understanding in a biblical sense. Group 13: Strength to Strength Meeting Day: Thursdays Time: 9:00-10:00 AM Leader: Dave Heitman Description: Discover what it means to live and serve out of your God-given strengths. Using the Strengths Finder inventory, students will discover how to apply their unique talents and gift mix to form strengths which they can apply in every area of their lives. Group 14: Made for More than a MRS Special Criteria: Single Women Only Leader: Michaela Dragos Description: This group will cover the biblical standards to uphold and set in place as single women of God. The course covers biblical values, personal strengths, boundaries, purpose in the waiting, and marriage in the biblical context. Group 15: Real Talk with Tanya

5 Leader: Tanya Andreas Description: This group will provide a place to examine and discuss diversity from a Biblical perspective. Christena Cleveland's book, Disunity in Christ: Uncovering the Hidden Forces That Keep Us Apart will be used as source material. Group 16: Centering Prayer Meeting Day: Wednesdays Time: 11:40 AM - 12:30 PM Leader: Wilmina Taghap Description: Are you tired of all the noise around you? Come, and let's develop a space where we can start to silence the noise and dig a deeper connection to God. Group 17: Life Verses Leader: Ciandra Kouklis Description: This SFG will be centered around the discussion of scripture that has made the biggest impact on each individual in the group. We will learn from each other how God has revealed himself to us individually in scripture. Group 18: Pauline Leadership Meeting Day: TBD Time: TBD Special Criteria: Men Only Leader: Nick Chellsen and Cody Steffenson Description: Interested in full-time or part-time ministry? Explore Pauline Leadership through the lens of 1 and 2 Timothy. This discussion-based group will meet in Crossroads Cafe for lunch. Group 19: Creative Expression and the Christian Faith Time: 12:40-1:30 PM Leader: Matthew Carlin

6 Description: In this SFG, we will consider the ways in which our creative endeavors, such as (but certainly not limited to) writing or visual arts, intersect with our faith. If you are a writer, painter, actor, or an artist of any stripe, or if you just have an interest in the arts, then this group will give you the time and space to consider what creative work means for our Christian faith--and vice versa. Group 20: The Problem of Personality Leader: Eva Huebner Description: This SFG seeks to explore the way in which the Enneagram typing system can be used as a powerful transformative tool for spiritual growth. More than simply identifying your own "type", this SFG will set out to uncover a healthy theology of personality and to better understand the grace and wisdom that is offered to us through Christ's invitation to take up our cross. Group 21: Staying Upright in a Tilted World Leader: Dan and Trisha Kinnoin Description: Spiritual checkpoints for maintaining your balance and remaining effective in our crazy world. Group 22: Formación Espiritual en Español Leader: Rex Gurney Description: This group is open to native Spanish speakers and others simply interested in an SFG conducted in Spanish. We will focus on a mixture of current events and the classical spiritual disciplines. Group 23: Destiny Finder Time: 6:00-7:00 PM

7 Leader: Glen Reed Description: You were created by God with a unique purpose - a destiny - a specific calling to impact the world for Jesus! This small group is an extremely powerful 8 week series, using the Destiny Finder online tool ( a participant workbook, and group discussion that leads you through a discovery process to identify your gifts, passions and dream, and create a practical plan to begin to fulfill your calling. Group 24: Destiny Finder Time: 7:00-8:00 PM, $15 Fee Leader: Glen Reed Description: You were created by God with a unique purpose - a destiny - a specific calling to impact the world for Jesus! Group 25: That's Tempting! Special Criteria: Women Only Leader: Jenice Sabra and Regina Davis Description: A biblical approach to temptation and how to overcome it. Group 26: God s Light Time: 4:00-5:00 PM Leader: Stephanie Everheart Description: Light is the first thing that God created; and the Scriptures often give reference God is Light. We will examine many of the physical characteristics of light as science understands it and discuss how this reveals the character and design of God. Group 27: Calming the Chaos

8 Leader: Maddy Harvey Description: Calming the Chaos is a group to help combat the busyness and burnout experienced as a college student. It will be a time to share and learn how to spiritually deal with season of our life where one may feel like there is no time for God or their relationship with him. Group 28: Are You Asking the Right Questions? Leader: Tammie Lovvorn Description: Andy Stanley has identified one question that is the key to finding the answer to all other questions in our lives. We will explore this question and how we can apply it to the many decisions we face, both big and small. Group 29: The Story of Jonah Leader: Hannah Meyer Description: Jonah. The Sunday school story for the kids who like whales. But what if there's more to it than exploring the digestive system of deep sea creatures? What if, taking a little closer look could open up an understanding of how our world and our God works and the plans he has in store for us... Group 30: The Influential Person Leader: Roenz Balangue Description: Whether you realize it or not, you have a call and purpose for your life right now! In this SFG we will be looking at biblical leaders, as we discern our call for the influence we have right now and do what we were made to do. Group 31: The Influential Person Time: 4:00-5:00 PM

Group 32: The 7 "I AM's" From John's Gospel Leader: Mike Boon Description: Students will put on "Jewish ears" in order to hear Jesus' I AM statements from the perspective of his original audience. New insights for personal application will result. Group 33: Vulnerability Leader: Paul Singh Description: An SFG meant to create a space where we can come together and be honest and vulnerable with others. We'll be talking about our lives; pulling off the masks we wear for others, covering topics like guilt, shame, depression, and many others, and ultimately discovering how God views us in light of all the brokenness we experience in our lives. Group 34: Bible Dig: Mark I Special Criteria: Women's Soccer Team Only Leader: Kalena Young Description: Using the inductive Bible study method: learn a new technique to read scripture and understand the secret to the kingdom through the book of Mark. Group 35: Walk With Me Time: 6:30-7:20 PM Special Criteria: Co-ed Leader: Brittany Knowles

Group 36: Preparing for Marriage Time: 12:45-1:35 PM Special Criteria: Co-ed Leader: Jorge Luna Description: This group will explore biblical perspectives on marriage, sex, and communication. Participants will develop practical skills in the areas of conflict, exercising spiritual gifts, and discipleship. Group 37: Incorporating Faith Into Sport Special Criteria: Female Athletes Only Leader: Rona Chavez Description: This course will go over incorporating your faith into the sport that you play. We will cover different tools and techniques to help athletes succeed on the field/court.
