7 DEADLY SINS OF CHURCH-PLANTING SEVEN MISTAKES WE MADE AT newlife AND HOW WE SURVIVED MATTHEW 16:18 NLT I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. 7 DEADLY SINS OF CHURCH PLANTING 1. DON T ASK FOR HELP, IT S A SIGN OF WEAKNESS - Asking for help is a sign that you are human and that you recognize that other gifts that God has given to the church. - Asking for help is a sign of humility. - Only do what only you can do. (Competence from The Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley) - The less you do, the more you accomplish. The less you do, the more you enable others to accomplish. - Leaders must channel their energies toward those arenas of leadership in which they are most likely to excel - Devoting a little of yourself to everything means committing a great deal of yourself to nothing. (Focus on the 80/20 rule) PROVERBS 11:2 NLT Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Matthew 9:37-38 NLT He said to his disciples, The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. Practical: (1) Pray to God. (2) Ask for Help.
2. DO YOUR DREAM! - God gives you dreams to get you to think bigger than what you could do. - Like with Joseph and his dream of the wheat and stars; most God-given dreams start off with you at the center of the dream. - God allows circumstances in your life to move you out of the center of the dream. - You move out of the center of the dream by becoming a better servant. - When you move out of the center of the dream, you can see where your dream and God s mission intersect. - At the end of a God-given dream is more worship of God. - If you ve vision is blurry, it could be that you are in the way. - Lift up Jesus and get out of the center of the dream. Genesis 50:19-20 ESV But Joseph said to them, "Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. Practical: (1) Focus on serving. (2) Help other people with their dreams. 3. EMPHASIZE HOW YOUR CHURCH IS DIFFERENT - Our unique church ministry model! - Church superiority complex when we constantly talk about how we do church different (meaning = better) - You know that God wants to grow you in this area when he sends people to you that talk about how much they like you better than their last church. - Part of being a good teammate on Team Jesus is to encourage and speak well of the other Christian churches in your area - Get to know other pastors in your area and pray that God blesses them. - Just do what you do and let your fruit speak for itself. - Quit telling people what you are not, not. It s confusing people! Philippians 2:3 NLT Don t be selfish; don t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.
Practical: (1) Talk more about Jesus than your church. (2) Meet with other pastors. 4. HIRE THE BEST! - Often when you use the hire the best philosophy you miss out on the people who are the most passionate for the mission in your area, have the most skin in the game, have the most local people connections, and have the most inside information on how to reach people where you live. - Adopt a leadership pipeline philosophy where you develop your own leaders from within - Never feel bad for asking for people to make the same sacrifices that you were asked to make. - It s about passion. EPHESIANS 4:11-12 NLT Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 2 TIMOTHY 2:2 NLT You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. Practical: (1) Find hungry people and apprentice them to be leaders 5. LISTEN TO THE EXPERTS! - Every area has an unique culture (dress, language, and DNA) so the most strategic thing to do is to make friendship with indigenous people who already know it and get to know them. Listen to them. - It doesn t mean that you can t learn from other leaders, but let the culture teach you how to reach them. - One of the best ways to get to know how to reach people in your community is to get involved doing stuff you love to do (Volunteers Rule) - The best way to teach people about the mission is to go on the mission yourself. You will have your own stories. - Don t spend all your time with Christians. Jesus didn t. - Convert sinners to Jesus and convert Christians to the mission.
- It isn t about being invitational or incarnational it s both when you are on the mission with Jesus. (Come and see. Go and tell.) MATTHEW 4:19 NLT Jesus called out to them, Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people! Practical: (1) Get involved in your community. (2) Make friendships with indigenous people and listen. 6. STAY AWAY FROM TOUGH SCRIPTURES - The best book on church planting is the Bible. - Immerse yourself in the gospels and learn the mission from Jesus. - Read the book of Acts together. - Read through all of Scripture through the lens of the person and work of Jesus. John 5:39 NLT You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Practical: (1) Read the Scriptures together as a leadership community. 7. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE CONTROL - You can have control or growth but you can t have both. - Preach Jesus and focus on the heart. - Discern between wolves and weeds. - Expect people to be human. Love people for who they are not for what you want them to be. Don t be afraid to discipline people. If you love them, they will let you speak your heart. How else did Jesus get away with so much truth? MATTHEW 13:27-30 NLT The farmer s workers went to him and said, Sir, the field where you planted that good seed is full of weeds! Where did they come from? 28 An enemy has done this! the farmer exclaimed. Should we pull out the weeds? they asked. 29 No, he replied, you ll uproot the wheat if you do. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest
GALATIANS 6:1 NLT Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Practical: (1) Empower the church. (2) Discipline with humility. (3) Guard the sheep from wolves.
