It is the season between the day of Epiphany (the twelfth day of Christmas) and the beginning of the Lenten Season, Ash Wednesday. This year, the journey through Epiphany is a long as it ever is. We will spend eight weeks walking through, ending with the Transfiguration of Christ. According to Harper s Encyclopedia of Religious Education: [Epiphany] originated in Egypt in the late second century, where January 6 was the date of a festival in which water was drawn from the Nile. It spread throughout the East as the unified celebration of the birth and baptism of Christ and by the middle of the fourth century was ranked with Easter and Pentecost as one of the three great feasts. In the late fourth century, the celebration of Christ s birth was separated from that of the baptism and assigned to December 25. Our Lectionary Scriptures for Year C are from Luke. Luke s vision is to help us to be illuminated by Christ s acts of grace and calling his disciples. We are to receive God s blessings and learn to love, be merciful, not judgmental, and be loving. Paul reminds us of how blessed we are by our Spiritual Gifts that are so graciously bestowed upon us by our Creator. This journey of light prepares us to face the repentance we will experience during the season of Lent. Let us walk together, embracing our faith anew in the light of Christ. As we search for newness of life during this season of questions and illumination, may we follow the One who has come to lead us to a new land full of promise. Shalom, Pastor Lorraine
