St Andrew s West Parish Church Scottish Charity No. SC Thank you for taking time to look at our profile. We are two congregations beginning a journey together towards union and seeking to serve Jesus Christ in our newly formed wider parish. We are looking for a new minister to help guide us through this process and tease out our strengths and weaknesses so that we can better serve our unique parish in this part of the city centre. We look forward to discovering more about future possibilities with our new minister. 1 P a g e

Introduction The new congregation of St Andrew s West will be formed from a union of Renfield St Stephen s Parish Church and Anderston Kelvingrove Parish Church and will come into being either on Thursday 24 th January 2019 or else at an earlier date upon the transfer of the Anderston Kelvingrove Church building to a charitable Trust. Basis of union for the congregations of Anderston Kelvingrove and Renfield St Stephen s. See Appendix 1 The Kirk Sessions of Anderston Kelvingrove and Renfield St Stephen s have taken the decision to depart from the historical position of the Church of Scotland in order to permit the ordination, and or, induction of a minister who is in a civil partnership or same sex marriage. The united congregation will be a diverse group of people of all ages and backgrounds committed to searching, learning, serving, creating and celebrating together. The combined parish will be bordered by the River Clyde in the south to the M8 at Cowcaddens to the north and from Kelvin Way in the west to Port Dundas Road in the east. The nature of the parish is culturally diverse; between two of the primary schools in the parish, there are 30 different languages spoken. Over 40% of the parish is populated by young adults, many of whom are students. See Appendix 2 Stats for Mission The church building to be used by the united congregation is currently used by the Renfield St Stephen s congregation and sits in the west end of the city centre across the road from the King s Theatre and amongst the business, leisure, hotel and entertainment communities. Attached to the church is the Renfield St Stephen s Church Centre. The current Anderston Kelvingrove building is situated in Anderston, a recently regenerated area. See Appendix 3 Ministry Team - Alongside the Minister s post the Presbytery Plan notes that an OLM will be deployed, when available, to St Andrew s West. The congregation also employs an organist/musician, a Facilities Manager and a Church Officer. 3 P a g e

Worship Currently our worship is structured in style, guided by the lectionary and makes use of CH4. That said, we are also open to variation. We have an active choir who present Introits and Anthems on a weekly basis and our music is provided by an organ and grand piano with occasional support from a flute, harp, bagpipes and euphonium although not all at the same time! The sanctuary provides an excellent acoustic. The congregation participates in a rota for scripture readings. Currently the main diet of worship is on Sunday morning with approximately 80 folk in attendance and there is a further opportunity for worship on Wednesdays at lunch time where approximately 20 people are in attendance. There is a chapel with flexible layout adjacent to the church. Both congregations celebrate Communion regularly with additional shorter celebrations of Communion throughout the year. There is a prayer group which meets on a Friday morning. 4 P a g e

Eco-congregation Flowing from our worship and in common with many other individuals and organisations, we have a serious concern for our impact on the environment. We have just been presented with our Eco-Congregation Bronze Award. As well as taking obvious steps like recycling, we are making changes within the Church Buildings. We have recently changed the lighting in the Sanctuary to LED lights and secondary glazing has been installed in the Church Centre. We have also installed auto shut off on the taps in the café toilets and intend to extend this throughout the Centre. We support charities such as Christian Aid and endeavour to use Fairtrade products and we have a regular stall selling Fairtrade items. We also liaise with other organisations and charities in the area. At the front of the Renfield St Stephen s Church there is a patio area with raised flower beds which are tended by members of the congregation and a small fountain which was part of the Church Garden in the Glasgow Garden Festival in There are benches and the area is enjoyed by local office workers and passers-by at lunchtime. We have won awards presented by The Incorporation of Gardeners of Glasgow and have events in the patio area. 5 P a g e

Outreach and Pastoral Care In both congregations our worship informs and guides our outreach and pastoral care. The outreach of the parish covers a broad spectrum from local to worldwide Locally, there are services at the Bield sheltered housing complex on a Monday; and each Wednesday a lunchtime service, open to all, is held in the church. Hospitality in the Oasis Café is offered to charities such as Loaves and Fishes, and other church and secular groups using our accommodation. The Curam lunch club takes place at Anderston Kelvingrove. We are involved with our Community Councils and also our MPs, MSPs and Councillors on environmental and eco-congregational issues. Throughout the year, a series of concerts takes place on Saturday lunchtimes in the Renfield St Stephen s sanctuary. A prayer tree within the Renfield St Stephen s Church Centre offers passers-by the opportunity to request prayers which are included in our prayers of intercession during Sunday worship. Much further afield, we have close links with schools in Manipur, India and Jaffa, Israel. In addition, annual events are held to contribute to the work of Christian Aid, the Church of Scotland HIV Programme and world crises events as they arise. There is wide scope for future outreach with opportunities arising from new student accommodation, hotels, business premises, local schools and the Glasgow School of Art, all within close vicinity of the church. In Renfield St Stephen s an Outreach Team has been working since 2015 and is now looking forward to meeting the challenges ahead as a new congregation. Pastoral Care There is a Pastoral Care Team ready to work alongside the minister in this area of work. 6 P a g e

Ecumenical Links We have live links with St Patrick s and St Aloysius Roman Catholic congregations, Adelaide Place Baptist congregation and the Glasgow City Centre Corps of the Salvation Army. In recent years we have taken part in a joint Good Friday Walk of Witness with our partners in the city centre and we begin our Easter morning celebrations with an early morning service in the Blythswood Square Gardens. We also have informal links with the New Life International Christian Fellowship and the Grace Communion World Wide Church of God. See Appendix 4 The Manse The manse is situated at 101 Hill Street, Glasgow G3 6TY and comprises a raised ground floor and lower ground level flat with its own original internal stair, within an elegant 19 th Century sandstone terrace. 11 Appendix 2 - Statistics for Mission ion/parish_profiles/ pdf ion/parish_profiles/ pdf Appendix 3 - Parish map Appendix 4 - Other local places of worship Our neighbouring Church of Scotland parishes are Kelvinbridge, Kelvinside Hillhead, St George s Tron, Sandyford Henderson and Wellington. South of the River Clyde our neighbouring parishes are Gorbals, Govan & Linthouse, and Kinning Park. St Columba (Gaelic) is wholly contained within our parish as it has a specific ministry to Gaelic speakers. These Christian denominations are active in our parish: Adelaide Place Baptist Church, Quaker Meeting House (The Religious Society of Friends), St Aloysius RC Church, St Patrick s RC Church, Glasgow City Free Church, The Salvation Army, The Tron Church at Kelvingrove (West of Scotland Gospel Partnership) and the Society of Pius X (Tridentine RC). Scotland s oldest purpose built synagogue, Garnethill Synagogue (Jewish), the Gurdwara Singh Sabha (Sikh Temple) and the Buddhist Centre are also in our parish. 11 P a g e

Appendix 5 The Pyramid at Anderston The Pyramid at Anderston A place to connect, create and celebrate Two texts are carved outside the sanctuary doors : When I was hungry, you fed me, and When I was homeless, you gave me shelter. They shape the shelter and hospitality we offer to all. We have over 30 different groups using our building. We provide hospitality for destitute asylum seekers every night. Our weekly lunch club was set up to address loneliness in the Anderston area. We welcome self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous; Gamblers Anonymous; Cocaine Anonymous. The two local primary schools, Anderston Primary and St Patrick s Primary, share over 30 different languages, representing a rich variety of cultures. That variety is reflected in the diversity of groups we welcome in to the Pyramid. In the Christian family, gathering every week, as well as our own Church of Scotland meeting, we welcome New Life International Christian Fellowship; the True Jesus (Chinesespeaking) church; and Abundant Life independent church. Until recently the Casa de Oracao (Portuguese-speaking church) met in the Pyramid, as did the Ethiopian Orthodox choir for their rehearsals. Every three months we welcome the Russian and Georgian Orthodox church. We also welcome families from Muslim and Hindu traditions. Local families gather to celebrate birthdays and weddings; wider groups, such as Glasgow University Sudanese Students, gather to celebrate national days. Anderston Kelvingrove was declared surplus to requirements by Presbytery, but owing to the significant number of groups using the building, we were given the opportunity of setting up a stand-alone Trust which would carry forward this work of welcome and hospitality. This Trust The Pyramid at Anderston has now been set up, with charity number SCO It is now preparing an application for funding from the Scottish Land Fund to purchase the building from the General Trustees. It is expected that a response to our Appendix 6 Renfield St Stephen s Church Centre application will be given in November of Renfield St Stephen s Church Centre was built in 1969 and substantially remodelled and refurbished in It has very good transport links with Charing Cross railway station and is served by several bus routes and the M8 motorway. Nearby is Charing Cross car park (payable). 12 P a g e

Appendix 6 Renfield St Stephen s Church Centre Renfield St Stephen s Church Centre was built in 1969 and Substantially remodelled and refurbished in It has very good transport links with Charing Cross railway station and is served by several bus routes and the M8 motorway. Nearby is Charing Cross car park [payable]. The Centre is a separate entity and is neither overseen by nor accountable to the Kirk Session. It is a registered charity managed by a Board of Directors. In the past the Minister has been invited to become a Director. The charity employ staff to run the Centre and the Café. The Café operates as a separate trading company with the same management board. The premises comprise four levels which are fully accessible with a wide variety of accommodation, ranging from a large hall (accommodating 220), with a stage, to various-sized meeting rooms, offices and the Oasis Café. The offices of the Presbytery of Glasgow are located in the Centre. Long leases are held by the charitable organisations Alpha; the Girls Brigade Greater Glasgow Region; Glasgow Churches Together; and Headway (Glasgow). Over the past twelve years or so nearly 1300 organisations of an immense variety of types have been accommodated on a short-term basis. Christian groups using the Centre for worship include, currently, Grace Communion World Wide Church of God; Norwegian Lutheran Church; Scotland Ablaze; Hope Church (which also uses the Centre for training); Shalem Church; and Glasgow Praise. Iona Community recently held a conference and AGM in the Centre; St Aloysius College use the Centre/Church for a spiritual retreat for their senior pupils; Glasgow Gaelic School annually holds its Christmas Concert in the Centre/Church; Garnetbank Primary School holds its annual Primary 7 leaving event in the Centre. Congregational organisations use the Centre as well as a variety of clubs and organisations including self-help groups, a wide range of hobby groups, uniformed youth organisations (outwith the congregation), charitable organisations (many with a Christian ethos), businesses, training organisations, universities for training and as an examination venue, choirs, orchestras, theatre and TV productions for rehearsals, trade unions and political parties. The Centre is open seven days a week. Oasis Café The Oasis Café is open Monday to Saturday serving teas, coffees, breakfasts, lunches and provides catering for groups using the Centre. It is not licensed to serve alcoholic drinks. It was completed refurbished in 2004 and provides an art exhibition space which changes monthly. The café provides hot meals twice weekly through Loaves and Fishes, a charity which feeds and clothes homeless people. 13 P a g e

Appendix 7 - The Renfield Street Trust The Sanctuary and the accommodation managed by the Centre are maintained by the Renfield Street trust. It is a registered Scottish charity. Its Deed of Trust requires the members of the Trust and their elected Directors to be members of the congregation. In the past the Minister has been invited to be a Director of the Renfield Street Trust. The Trust entrusts management of the use of all the accommodation to the board of directors of Renfield Centre Ltd, (known as Renfield St Stephen s Church Centre) which effectively factors the entire property, dealing with security, caretaking, heating, lighting, insurance, cleaning, minor maintenance and refurbishment, and complying with health and safety requirements. Staff are employed for these purposes, including a full-time Centre manager. The Centre has the primary responsibility, however, to promote community use of the accommodation, other than of the Sanctuary. The liberality of the congregation is augmented by the quarterly payment to it of dividends from an endowment fund of the Trust for the benefit of Renfield St Stephen s Parish Church (or its successor).
