Opening Prayer and Scripture (6:30-6:33 PM) Opening Prayer: O God our Father and our Maker, you have made us in your image and called us by our names; you have made us your own in Jesus Christ, our Lord, in whose cross we glory as we honor his dying and rising in the Eucharist. Make us holy as he is holy, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. From Magnificat, Oct. 16, 2011 Catholic Prayer: "Apostles Creed" (with emphasis on "On the third day he rose again.") Scripture Reading: Included in tonight's activity. 2. "The First Day" (6:33-6:40 PM) What do you think the apostles felt at the time of Jesus' death? o The man they believed to be the Son of God, whom they followed for three years, who performed many miracles, and who ate the Passover meal with them, died on the Cross. o They loved Jesus and must have felt tremendous sorrow at the time of his death. o They also must have been disappointed with themselves for not staying with Jesus at the time of his persecution and Crucifixion. o The apostles must have been fearful for their own lives and confused about their belief in Jesus. The Shroud of Turin is believed to be the burial cloth of Christ. o The Gospel of John describes Christ's garment being left after his Resurrection (John 20:6-7). o The Shroud of Turin bears the image of a crucified man. This image was not painted on the cloth. It is said the image is somehow impressed upon the garment in such a powerful way that it would resemble a nuclear blast! o The Resurrection of Christ must have been a truly awesome event. 3. Activity (6:40-6:50 PM) Randomly assign (could have students pull slips of paper from a hat) the following scripture

2 readings to the youth: John 20:1-18, Luke 24:13-35, Luke 24:36-48, Matthew 28:1-20, Acts 1:1-12, John 21:1-18, Acts 2:1-42, Acts 9:1-22, Acts 10:21--11:18. Depending on the number of students, the readings could be assigned to individuals, more than one student, or teams of students. At your signal, the students are to search for their assigned reading. Prizes can be awarded to the first student (or team) to find the assigned reading. Have them bookmark their assigned reading. As you progress through the lesson plan and come to the readings in sections 4 and 5 below, have the assigned student(s) read it aloud to the class. The objective of the activity is to continue to familiarize the students with the locations of the different books of the Bible and to reinforce that the Catholic Church is a biblical church. 4. "His Church" (6:50-7:05 PM) After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared many times to his disciples: o Mary Magdelene at the tomb (John 20:1-18). o Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). o Jesus appeared to the apostles in an upper room in Jerusalem after the Resurrection (Luke 24:36-48). How did the apostles know that Jesus was not a ghost? * They touched him and ate with Jesus. * Jesus explained the Scriptures to them so they would understand this mystery. o Great Commission (Matthew 28:1-20). o Ascension (Acts 1:1-12). o Sea of Tiberius (John 21:1-18). Who first recognized Jesus? How was Jesus recognized? How did Peter respond? What was waiting on the shoreline for the disciples? (Could a ghost make breakfast?) Why did Jesus ask Peter three times if he loved our Lord? (Peter had denied Jesus three times.) Who are the lambs/sheep? What special role did Jesus give to Peter? (Pope.) Jesus stayed on earth for forty days after the Resurrection in order to further teach his apostles. o He would have explained to them how he fulfilled the Scriptures. o He would have instructed them to preach the gospel and spread and govern his Church. Jesus promised to remain with the Church until the end of time (Mt 28:20). o Jesus then ascended into heaven. o There were many witnesses of our Lord's Ascension. 5. "Early Church" (7:05-7:20 PM) When Jesus rose form the dead he proved that he is God the Son, the Second Person of

3 the Blessed Trinity. His Resurrection showed that his suffering and death were not in vain. His death was accepted as the pleasing and atoning sacrifice to God, redeeming the world from sin. Furthermore, if Jesus is God, his powers are real, and: o The powers he gave to his apostles are real. o The promises that Jesus made were true. Jesus' Resurrection is a sign of hope that we too will rise from the dead. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to the apostles. (Read and discuss Acts 2:1-42.) o Who was gathered in prayer for nine days in the upper room? o What were Mary and the apostles doing when the Holy Spirit descended? o How was the Holy Spirit recognized? o Why did Peter have to say that they were not drunk? o What special gift did the Holy Spirit give to the apostles? (The ability to speak in different languages.) o Who spoke? Why do the students think Peter was the one to speak on Pentecost? o How many were baptized? o Why is Pentecost known as the "birthday of the Church"? (Read and discuss the Bible story of the conversion of Saint Paul (Acts 9:1-22).) o Why is saint Paul important to the early Church? o Did Saint Paul always support the Christians? o Why then was Saint Paul such an effective witness? o Who appeared to Saint Paul to cause his conversion? o What miracle occurred? (Read how the early Church was opened to the Gentiles (since it started with just the Jewish people) from Acts 10:21--11:18.) o How did the Holy Spirit descend upon Cornelius? o (The Holy Spirit descends upon us at our Confirmation.) o Who had the authority to permit Gentiles to join the Church of Christ? 6. "The Resurrected Body" (7:20-7:25 PM) The resurrected body of Chirst is different from a normal body as we know it. At the end of time, our own bodies will be resurrected from the dead; then our bodies will share the same qualities of Jesus' resurrected body: o Immortal: The body will not die again---it will be eternal. Jesus won eternal life and conquered death by his death, Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven. o Lucid: The body is beautiful and perfect. Jesus' body was made beautiful and radiantly illuminated (as with the Transfiguration of Christ). Jesus was not immediately recognized by the apostles even though he still bore the wounds of the Crucifixion. o Spiritual: The body is in accordance with the will (there will no longer be concupiscence). It will be made spiritual and subject to our souls.

4 o Impassible: It will be the same body, but it will not suffer. We know from the Resurrection of Jesus that the same body of the deceased is raised up and glorified. (Jesus' resurrected body still bore his wounds, although he did not suffer from them.) o Agile: It will not be limited by time and space. Jesus was able to be in many places at once. He was able to enter a locked room. He was able to disappear after breaking bread at the supper of Emmaus. 7. Evaluation (7:25-7:30 PM) Fill in the blank and True or False answer key. 1.
