1st Readings in the New Testament Terms 2,3and 4 The Guide to Reading the Acts and the Epistles A place to hear God s Word

Reading the Acts and the Epistles This reading guide follows Luke s narrative of the Acts of the Apostles. It then attempts to integrate the life of Paul, as found in the Acts, with contemporary external events, and also list the Letters of Paul according to when they were written. Other New Testament letters are set in order according to their date. Term 2: Week 6 1 Jerusalem: At the Beginning Acts The Promise of the Holy Spirit Acts Ascension of Jesus Acts Judas successor chosen Acts The Coming of the Holy Spirit Acts Peter s Speech on Pentecost Day Acts The audience responds [1a] Common Life Part 1 Acts Life among the Believers Acts Lame Man healed at Temple Gate Acts Peter s Speech in Solomon s Portico 2 Jerusalem: Pressures on the Church: internal and external [2a] External Pressures Part 1 Acts Peter and John before the Council Acts Believers pray for boldness [2b]Common Life Part 2 Acts All things in common Acts Ananias and Saphira Acts Signs and Wonders performed [2c] External Pressures Part 2 Acts Persecution: Imprisoned and called to account Acts Appointment of the Seven Deacons Acts Stephen s arrest Acts Stephen s speech Acts a - Stoning of Stephen Saul s conversion not before AD 33. Not a lot is known about Paul s life before his conversion. We do know that before his conversion he was a persecutor of the church [1 Cor.15.9; Gal 1.13; Acts 7.58, 9.2] In this reading we see that at the time of Stephen s death, Saul was a young man. Gal 1.14 implies that he was a young adult. What amount of time elapsed between Jesus crucifixion and the period Acts 2-9 we are not sure. But of Jesus died AD 33, then Saul s conversion cannot be before that date. Acts 8.1b-3 - Saul persecutes the Church Term 2: Week 7 3 Expansion : Preaching and Response in Palestine Acts The Gospel Preached in Samaria Acts Philip meets the Ethiopian Eunuch 4 Conversion of Saul of Tarsus 33/34 Acts a[Acts ,12-18] - The Conversion of Saul [Read also Galatians ] The Galatian sequence of events lays out the following order. Saul s conversion and entry into Damascus [1.16]; a three year interval in Arabia and a return to Damascus [ ]; Visit 1 to Jerusalem over 15 days [ ]; a 14 year interval in Syria and Cilicia preaching to Gentiles [ ]; Visit 2 to Jerusalem for a private conference on the Gentile missionary work [2.1-10]; the Antioch incident where he corrected Peter [ ]. Acts 9.19b-25 - Saul Preaches at Damascus and escapes the Jews [See also 2 Cor ] 37/40 This escape took place between 37 and 39/40 AD. The ethnarch of King Aretas was guarding the gates of Damascus at the time. The Nabatean king Aretas IV died between 38 and 40, probably 39 AD and Nabatean control of Damascus is unlikely before 37 AD when the accession of Caligula [16 th March AD37] brought in a new attitude to client kings. Allowing for the 3 years in Arabia preceding this basket escape this would put Paul s conversion at 33/4 AD. David Boan 2012 Page 1

5 - Pe t e r - Je r u s a l e m a n d An t i o c h Acts Saul at Jerusalem [Galatians ] This visit lasted 15 days. Paul says in Galatians that he became aquainted with Peter and also met James, the Lord s brother. Acts The healing of Aeneas Acts Dorcas restored to Life Acts Peter and Cornelius Acts Peter Speaks in Cornelius home Acts Gentiles receive the Holy Spirit Acts Peter s report to the Church at Jerusalem Acts The Church at Antioch The Famine in the days of Claudius [ 25 th January AD]. Notice that Acts records here two events, the act of prophecy by Agabus and the prophesied famine. This famine may not have happened before the death of Herod Agrippa which is recounted in Acts 12. Acts James killed and Peter imprisoned 44 James, son of Zebedee was executed 44 AD by Herod Agrippa, the king of Palestine [42-44AD] as part of a wider move of harassment which included the arrest of Peter. Acts Peter delivered from prison Acts The Death of Herod Agrippa 1 Herod Agrippa 1 died in March 44 AD. Acts appears to have Saul and Barnabas return shortly after Herod s death. Some think this may not be chronological but topical arrangement by Luke. Both evidence from coins and also Josephus are in agreement on a date of just after Nisan 44 AD. 6 Paul s First Missionary Journey Acts Acts Barnabas and Saul commissioned Acts The Apostles Preach in Cyprus Sergius Paulus is known from evidence in inscriptions to be associated with Cyprus; but precise dating is not available for him. Acts Paul and Barnabas at Antioch of Pisidia Paul writes Galatians - If we accept the South Galatian theory [Winter AD 48]. But we read this in accord with the later date, which is based on the North Galatian theory [Winter AD 56 or Spring of AD 57] Acts Paul and Barnabas at Iconium Acts Lystra Acts The return to Antioch in Syria Acts The Council at Jerusalem Acts The reply of the Council Acts Paul and Barnabas separate Term 2: Week 8 7 Paul s Second Missionary Journey Acts Acts Timothy accompanies Paul and Silas Acts Paul s Vision of the Man of Macedonia Acts The Conversion of Lydia Acts The Imprisonment at Philippi Acts The Uproar at Thessalonica Acts The Apostles at Beroea Acts Paul at Athens Acts Paul at Corinth Claudius expulsion of the Jews from Rome. Suetonius [Claudius 25.4] records the expulsion of Jewish agitators but gives no date. A later historian sets the date as Claudius 9 th year [49 AD]. This would have Aquila and Priscilla arriving in Corinth shortly before Paul 49/50 AD. Paul, in Corinth, writes 1 Thessalonians. [51/2 AD] 1.1 Salutation The Thessalonians faith and example Paul s ministry in Thessalonica David Boan 2012 Page 2

His desire to visit the church again A life pleasing to God The Lord s coming Final exhortations and Greetings 2 Thessalonians The Judgment at Christ s coming The Man of Lawlessness Chosen for salvation Pray for Us Warning against idleness Benediction Term 2: Week 9 Acts Paul before Gallio Gallio, the procunsul is a vital date 51/52 AD for us because it is precise. Roman governors took office in early Summer. Paul stays in Corinth for 18 months during 49/50-51/52 AD. He would have come before Gallio near to the end of that period. Acts Paul s return to Antioch of Syria Leaving Corinth [Spring,] via Cenchrae, Ephesus, Caesarea and Jerusalem [Summer] 8 Paul s Third Missionary Journey Acts [1] The Journey to Ephesus Acts Apollos preaches at Ephesus Acts Paul at Ephesus; baptises 12 men Acts Paul preaching in the School of Tyrannus Two years and 3 months [52-55 AD] Paul first preaches for three months in the Synagogue, followed by 2 years in the School of Tyrannus; all Asia hearing him from there. Paul, in Ephesus, writes 1 Corinthians. He does this some time [Spring 54AD] before Pentecost [1 Cor 16.8] and he intended to stay at Ephesus Greeting and Thanksgiving Divisions in the Church Christ the Power and Wisdom of God Proclaiming Christ crucified The revelation by God s Spirit Fellow workmen for God The Ministry of the Apostles Judgment against Immorality Going to Law before Unbelievers Glorify God in your body Problems concerning marriage The Life the Lord has assigned The Unmarried and the Widows Food offered to Idols The rights of an Apostle Warning against Idolatry Do all to the glory of God Covering the head in worship Abuses at the Lord s Supper The Institution of the Lord s Supper Partaking of the Supper unworthily Spiritual Gifts One Body with man members Love Tongues and prophecy All things to be done in order David Boan The resurrection of Christ Page 3

The resurrection of the dead The resurrection of the body The contribution for the saints Plans for travel Final requests and greetings Term 3: Week 1 Acts In the Autumn of 54 AD the proconsul of Asia, M.Julius Silvanus was poisoned by two messengers of Nero [Tacitus, Annals,13.1] Helius and Celer, who acted as proconsul until Silvanus successor arrived in early Summer 55 AD. Acts The sons of Sceva Acts Timothy and Erastus depart for Macedonia. The riot at Ephesus over Demetrius 9 Paul s Third Missionary Journey resumes Acts [Autumn 55AD Autumn 56 AD] Acts Paul s Journey to Macedonia and Greece Paul, in Macedionia, writes 2 Corinthians. Paul spent some time in Macedonia after leaving Ephesus and then moved on to Greece for 3 months before returning to Macedonia on his way to Jerusalem. This would mean that most of his time in Greece was in wintertime, since it was the Paschal season when he was in Philippi [Acts 20.6]. He must have arrived at Corinth therefore about the preceding December or January. If then, 2 Corinthians was sent in October {Autumn}, this would be just a few weeks before he arrived. This fits in well with the anticipations of the visit that run through the letter Paul s Thanksgiving after affliction The Postponement of Paul s visit Forgiveness for the offender Paul s anxiety and relief Ministers of the New Covenant Treasure in earthen vessels Living by faith The ministry of reconciliation The temple of the living God Paul s joy at the church s repentance Liberal giving Titus and his companions The offering for the saints Paul defends his ministry Paul and the false apostles Paul s sufferings as an apostle Visions and revelations Paul s concern for the Corinthian church Final warnings and greetings Term 3: Week 2 Acts Paul arrives in Corinth [Autumn] and stays 3 months [Winter] Paul, in Corinth, writes Galatians - Accepting North Galatian theory [Winter AD 56 or Spring of AD 57.] Salutation There is no other Gospel How Paul became an apostle Paul accepted by the other apostles Paul rebukes Peter at Antioch Jews, like Gentiles are saved by faith Law or faith The Law and the Promise Slaves and sons Paul s concern for the Galatians David Boan 2012 Page 4
