What do we learn about the incarnation of the Son of God from Philippians 2:5-11? 3. What should be our mindset according to Philippians 4:5-9? 4. Wrong teaching from a false religious cult was threatening the church at Colossae. From the counteremphasis and refutation of this wrong teaching by Paul in his letter to the Colossians, reconstruct some of the things this cult must have taught. 5. Of the many characteristics of the Lord Jesus listed in Colossians 1:15-23, write down one that you especially appreciate, stating why. 6. What reasons does Paul give in Colossians 3:1-5 for telling us to keep seeking the things above, to set your mind on things above, and to consider the members of your earthly body as dead to sin. 4
Class 5 1 & II Thessalonians 1. Describe the kind of life the Christians in Thessalonica were living based upon Paul s account in 1 Thessalonians 1: What strikes you about the kind of ministry Paul had among the Thessalonians based upon 1 Thessalonians 2:5-12? Is this the kind of ministry you are having with others? 3. What did Paul live for and really thrill him when he saw it accomplished (1 Thessalonians 3:1-8)? 4. List the events of the Lord s second coming found in 1 Thessalonians 4: List the events associated with the Lord s second coming found in 2 Thessalonians 2: What problem does Paul confront in 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15? 6 Class 6 1 & II Timothy 1. List the qualifications of an elder (1 Timothy 3:1-7)? Circle those that are related to academics. 2. List the qualifications of a deacon (1Timothy 3:8-13). 3. Select one of the qualifications listed in questions one or two in which you are weak. Prayerfully consider what you might do to grow in that area. 4. Briefly summarize the general qualities of a godly woman exemplified in the widow indeed (1 Timothy 5:3-16). 5. Paul wrote 2 Timothy shortly before he was martyred. Record some of the things that he says to Timothy that demonstrate why this letter is considered to be Paul s most personal letter. 6. Of the many instructions Paul gives to Timothy in his second letter to him, list one that speaks to you personally. Explain why. 7. How did Paul view his life as a whole (2 Timothy 4:6-7)? Will you be able to say the same? 6
Class 7 Titus, Philemon, Hebrews List the qualifications of an elder found in Titus 1:5-16. Compare them to the ones found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 (class 6, question 1), circling any that are new. 2. How can Paul tell us that we should be zealous for good deeds (Titus 2:14) in one chapter and that God saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness (Titus 3:5) in the next. Is there a conflict here? Explain. 3. List any parallels you can find between the story of Paul, Onesimus, and Philemon and the story of our salvation in Christ Jesus. 4. In what ways does the writer of Hebrews say that Jesus is superior to the angels (Hebrews 1-2)? 5. How is Jesus superior to Moses (Hebrews 3:1-6)? 7
Class 8 Hebrews What is it that the writer of Hebrews fears may happen to the people to whom he is writing (Hebrews 3:7-4:16)? 2. What is the primary characteristic about Jesus as our high priest that is brought out in Hebrews 4:14-5:10? 3. In Hebrews 6:19-10:25, the writer shows that we have a better hope than the Jew under Law. He proves this by showing that we as Christians have three things that are better than the Jew. Fill in the blanks: A. We have a better (Hebrews 6:19-8:3) B. We have a better (Hebrews 8:4-9:22) C. We have a better (Hebrews 9:23-10:18) 4. In Hebrews 10:26-12:11 the writer exhorts his readers to endure by faith. List each verse in this section that uses the word endure in any of its forms. 5. Hebrews 12:12-13:19 is filled with practical exhortation to godly living. Prayerfully select one instruction on which the Lord would have you work. Then think of one concrete thing you can do about it this week and record it next to it. 8
Class 9 James What is a Christian supposed to do and not do when facing difficult times (James 1:2-19)? 2. Paul writes: But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness (Romans 4:5). James writes: You see that a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone (James 2:24). Referring to James 2:14-26, explain why James is not contradicting Paul. 3. List three reasons that James gives for why we need to be so careful about our speech (James 3:1-12). 4. According to James 3:13-18, what is the mark of true wisdom? 5. Are the instructions of James 5:14-16 still applicable? 9
Class 10 1 & II Peter 1. 1 Peter is generally seen as an exhortation to practice righteousness and trust God in a time of persecution and trial. List the verses in this epistle that indicate that the readers were suffering opposition because of their faith. 2. List the things that are true of us as Christians according to 1 Peter 2:1-10? 3. Does Peter present himself in this letter as the head of the church on earth as the Catholic Church claims or does he present himself in another manner (1 Peter 5:1-4)? 4. 2 Peter is generally seen as an exhortation to godly living in a time when there were false teachers threatening the church. List the verses that indicate that pressures from false teachers were in the forefront of Peter s mind in writing. 5. Paraphrase 2 Peter 1:20-21, rewriting it in your own words. 6. What does Peter say that some will mock in the last days (2 Peter 3:1-13). What do they fail to remember when they do this? 10
Class 11 1, II, and III John, Jude 1. John wrote his first epistle to combat a heresy called Gnosticism. It taught that if you wanted to know God, you had to be initiated into its secret mysteries. It also held that because the physical was not important, only the spiritual, what you do in your flesh does not matter. Consequently, many of those who followed it had very low ethical and moral conduct. In answer, John tells his readers that there are a number of tests that distinguish true followers of God from false. 1. Fill in the following blanks, recording in each what John says is true of a genuine follower of God. A. (1 John 2:3) B. (1 John 2:19) C. (1 John 2:29) D. (1 John 3:14) E. (1 John 4:6) F. (1 John 4:16) G. (1 John 5:13) 2. According to John s instruction in his second epistle, what should we do when the Jehovah Witnesses come to our door? 3. How does John say that we should treat traveling evangelists and teachers (3 John)? 4. Of what sins does John accuse Diotrephes (3 John)? 5. For what purpose does Jude say that he wrote his letter? Why was this necessary? 11
Class 12 Revelation Fill in the following table, listing the things for which Christ commends and rebukes each church. Church Commended Rebuked Ephesus (2:1-7) Smyrna (2:8-11) Pergamum (2:12-17) Thyatira (2:18-29) Sardis (3:1-6) Philadelphia (3:7-13) Laodicea (3:14-22) 2. Why was the Lamb found worthy to take the book and break its seals (Revelation 5)? 3. Why do the people of earth call for the mountains and rocks to fall on them (Revelation 6)? 4. What causes silence in heaven for half an hour (Revelation 8)? 12
Class 13 Revelation Describe the relationship of the dragon (Revelation 13:2), the first beast (Revelation 13:1), and the second beast (Revelation 13:11). 2. Describe the relationship of the beast to the woman of Revelation 17: What causes all heaven to break forth into Hallelujahs (Revelation 19)? 4. Draw a time line of the events prophesied in Revelation 20: What are the final words of Jesus in the Bible? 13
