3 Unit II: The Spread of the Gospel Lesson 5: May 5 1. Righteousness refers to integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking/feeling/acting; a state of being approved of by God. One who is declared righteous is one who has been justified by placing his or her trust in the fact that Christ s sacrificial atonement is sufficient for us. 2. Justification is the state of having been justified, in this case by Christ. It is to render righteousness; to show or exhibit righteousness; to declare, pronounce, or be just as one ought to be. Being justified makes one s reality to be Just-as-if-I never had sinned. 3. Sanctification refers to consecration, purification; the making of one s heart, mind, and life to be more Christlike. Whereas justification is a legal term denoting a status, in this case one s position before a holy God, sanctification refers more to one s character being conformed to holiness. 4. To glorify God means to make Him known, make Him famous, or make His name great. 2. Engrafting is an agricultural practice, which involves cutting and splicing, or transplanting, a twig or branch of one plant onto another that the two would grow together, permanently being of the same essence. In spiritual terms, to be grafted into the family of God refers to Gentiles being adopted into God s elect such that people of Jewish and Gentile descent experience eternal salvation. 4. 5 Unit III: A Fulfilled Covenant Lesson 9: June 2 1. Personal answers will vary. 2. The two elements of the Lord s Supper are bread and wine, symbolizing Christ s body and blood. 3. The new covenant, which is fulfilled in Christ, is available to all who believe in Christ, who not only is the Mediator but also the Promise held forth by that covenant. 4. The new covenant is written on the minds and hearts of God s people. 5. Three benefits of the new covenant given in today s passage are: God will be a personal God and we His people; there will be a day when we no longer teach and learn but will know God intimately, all from the least to the greatest; and He will be merciful to us, not remembering our iniquities. 6. For God to remember (our) sins no more rather than forgetting our sins refers to the fact that He actively chooses not to dwell on our sin. He s fully aware of each and every time we ve missed the mark, but He chooses to see us a justified by the blood of His only begotten Son, sharing in His righteousness and made new in Him. 7.
