1 DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME We are here this morning to worship GOD and the LORDSHIP of JESUS. Luke 22:14-20 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."

2 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 1 Corinthians 11:23-30 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you

3 drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME? What are we to REMEMBER about Jesus?

4 1. WE REMEMBER HIS DEATH. The bread represents the suffering. sacrificial BODY of Jesus. The fruit of the vine represents His BLOOD shed, voluntarily, so that our sins can be forgiven. His sacrificial death allows our sins to be charged to his account! 1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

5 On the cross Jesus died in our place. He died where we should ve died for OUR SINS. On the cross, in our place, Jesus suffered the full consequence for each and every sin of all mankind, including ours. 2. WE ARE TO REMEMBER HIS RESURRECTION. When Jesus died on the cross, the work of redemption was not fully accomplished. Completion came 3 days after His death when upon the FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK HE AROSE FROM THE TOMB.

6 His coming, His life and death meant nothing if the tomb is still occupied. The resurrection of Jesus affirms that He was who he said He was. This resurrection affirms the God nature and Lordship of Jesus! Eating this bread and drinking this cup every Sunday helps us remember that when Jesus arose from the grave, He made a power to overcome death and restore life available to us. We too can be resurrected to a new life life eternal in Heaven. 1 Cor. 15:3; For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 13 If there is

7 no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

8 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Paul is saying, just as sure as Jesus was resurrected, we too will be raised! 3. WE REMEMBER OUR OWN BAPTISM. This supper serves to draw us back to our being born again in genuine NT baptism Immersion in water for the forgiveness of our sins.

9 In this Christian burial and resurrection, God promises to save us through the death and resurrection of His Son. Scripture teaches that our baptism unites us with Christ in the likeness of His death and resurrection. Romans 6:3-8 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in

10 his resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Eating this bread and drinking this cup each Lord s Day helps us remember how our baptism links us with the redeeming events of Jesus death, burial and resurrection. 4. WE ARE TO ANTICIPATE HIS SECOND COMING.

11 Paul said, when we eat the bread and drink the cup we, proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. One day Jesus will come to get those who are His. John 14:2-4 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going. 5. WE ARE TO REMEMBER TO JUDGE OURSELVES AS WE PARTAKE OF THE LORD S SUPPER.

12 We are to partake in a WORTHY manner. That manner is simply that we rightly discern the death, the body, and blood of Jesus. Paul is saying that when we partake of these emblems WE ARE TO REMEMBER JESUS. We are to REMEMBER His pain, His sacrificial death. The cleansing nature of His blood. We are to rejoice that our sins are covered by His blood in baptism And we are to anticipate His Second Coming. If we don t do this part of our worship correctly, Paul says we ll be weak and susceptible to falling away.

13 Let s REMEMBER JESUS as we partake of this SUPPER.
