5 MEET MAGGIE MAGPIE Maggie Magpie is a master detective who can solve almost anything especially with Jesus help. Her street smarts and high-class attitude make the District of Metro a natural habitat for her famous adventures and escapades. With class and pizzazz, Maggie s umbrella can help her navigate tricky situations and do almost anything. She s inquisitive with an oldfashioned charm, confident, smart, orderly, and neat. Join Maggie Magpie on her quest through City Square as she discovers a world of heroes in the faith.

6 METRO DISTRICT CI T Y SQUARE DISCOVERING NEW TESTAMENT HEROES OF THE FAITH Have you ever played Follow the Leader with a friend? The rules are to do whatever the leader does in order to stay in the game. As a Christian, we follow our leader Jesus. By following after Him, we are able to do what is right and honor God. Jesus gives us the perfect example to follow through His life. There are many incredible people in the Bible who followed after Jesus and have set an awesome example for each of us. We like to call them heroes of the faith because their faith in Jesus is heroic! Through our series, we are learning about how they came to be known as heroes and what we can learn from their life.

8 1 THE UNLIKELY HERO - ZACCHAEUS GO ANSWER BIBLE STORY Following Jesus makes me more like Him Luke 19:1-10 In Luke 19:1-10, we read the story of Zacchaeus who went from a hated tax collector to an obedient giver. Zacchaeus starts us out with the perfect example of what it looks like to put Jesus first and follow after Him. Family Discussion Questions Use these questions to spark family discussion time! In which city does our Bible story take place? What type of tree did Zacchaeus climb? Why did he climb it? What was Zacchaeus job? Where did Jesus want to stay that day? Who did Jesus say He came to save? How much of his goods did Zacchaeus promise the poor? CAN YOU PICTURE IT! Draw a picture of what you think it looked like when Zacchaeus climbed up the tree to see Jesus.

9 WHO WERE TAX COLLECTORS? In Bible times, tax collectors were hated because of their dishonesty. No one enjoyed paying taxes, but these collectors would cheat people by telling them to pay more than they owed and then keep the extra for themselves. When Jesus changed Zacchaeus heart, he immediately repented of his sins. Zacchaeus gave half of his possessions to the poor and paid back 4 times the amount of money he cheated from others. 10 2 THE TWELVE HEROES - THE DISCIPLES GO ANSWER BIBLE STORY Following Jesus takes obedience The Gospels When Jesus was ready to start His earthly ministry, He selected twelve guys to do life and ministry with Him. These guys are known as the twelve disciples. They followed Jesus everywhere and saw incredibly, miraculous things! God used them to continue spreading His love with the world. Read about their incredible adventures in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John! Ask your parents! Ask your mom or dad about a time when they were obedient to something God told them. One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people! And they left their nets at once and followed Him. 12 3 THE SERVANT HERO - MARY + MARTHA GO ANSWER BIBLE STORY Following Jesus means I put Him first Luke 10:38-42 STRAIGHT FROM GOD S WORD: Check out the story of Mary & Martha from Luke 10:38-42 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, Lord, doesn t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me. But the Lord said to her, My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her. Family Discussion Questions Use these questions to spark family discussion time! What does it mean to put Jesus first? Who was putting Jesus first in the story Mary or Martha? Have there been a few times when you have put something or someone ahead of Jesus in your life? What was it? 14 4 THE COURAGEOUS HERO - STEPHEN GO ANSWER BIBLE STORY Following Jesus takes courage Acts 6:8-15, 7:54-60 In the book of Acts we read about Stephen, an incredibly courageous follower of Jesus. After Jesus died, many Christians were imprisoned and even put to death because of their belief in Jesus. Stephen was actually stoned to death for being a Christian. Before he died, he was able to stand before the high council to tell about all God had done in his life. The Bible tells us that his face looked like the face of an angel as he talked. Family Discussion Questions Use these questions to spark family discussion time! How does it make you feel to think about suffering because you are obedient to what Jesus has asked you to do? What are some things Jesus asks us to do that may cause others to insult us? Do you think you would have had courage like Stephen if you were in the same situation? Stephen may have been stoned to death, but he was not alone as he suffered. He saw Jesus in heaven waiting for him. Stephen left his life on this earth and went to heaven to spend eternity with his Savior, Jesus. You and I can be comforted that, if we are followers of Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives inside of our hearts. Whatever God asks us to do while serving Him on this earth we will have the power to do because His Spirit lives inside of us! But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God s right hand. And he told them, Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God s right hand! (Acts 7:55-56, NLT)

16 5 THE BAPTIZING HERO - JOHN THE BAPTIST GO ANSWER BIBLE STORY Following Jesus gives me something to share Luke 1; Matthew 3:1-17 John the Baptist waited for Jesus coming. While he waited, John told people about Jesus and all He had done in his life. He preached about God s love and baptized many people who believed. When we are a follower of Jesus, it means that we have a job to do tell others about Jesus! The change that has taken place in our life should be shared with others. Following Jesus gives me something to share. Family Discussion Questions Use these questions to spark family discussion time! In which river did John the Baptist baptize people? Read Mark 1:5-6 to see how many interesting things you can find out about John the Baptist. What does it mean to repent of your sins? WHAT IS BAPTISM? Baptism is a way to show others what God has done in your life. It s like a show and tell of all God has done! It s a way to show others that you belong to God and are following after Him. This could be something like moving to a new state or getting a new baby brother or sister. Both of those are things that would definitely change everything! Paul had a few situations in his life where things were changed in a big way, but none larger than when he encountered Jesus. In Acts chapter 9, we learn about Paul s life taking a full 180 degree turn as he went from wanting to kill God s people to helping spread the good news of Jesus around the world! WHAT IS A MISSIONARY? A missionary is someone who tells others about Jesus! LET S GO ON AN ADVENTURE! You re going on a trip and can only take 3 things with you. What do you chose?
