Reflecting on Living the Gospel H uman beings have an innate drive to find causation, a reason for things and events happening, especially accidents. This drive generally works well and helps us devise systems and ways of doing things that are safer and more 2 productive. In the ancient world, and perhaps even our own, many accidents or tragic events were explained by appeal to the gods, or God. It was understood that bad things happened to bad people; in other words, if something bad happened to someone, it s because that someone did something bad, or was himself bad. Good people lived lives that were blessed and filled with good things. A tragedy or accident nearly guaranteed that the victim was somehow at fault, had reaped the tragic remuneration for what he had sown. Much of the Old Testament, especially the Torah, provides the underpinnings for this view. But there are other books, for example, Job, that question it. Jesus, however, interprets these events differently. He does not see this as a just punishment for some hidden sin. Instead, he tells those who are selfrighteous in their smugness that the same will happen to them unless they repent. The period of time they have between witnessing the tragedy that befell others and the unknown time of their own death is a time for repentance. And the parable Jesus gives them underlines this point. The parable also subtly informs the audience that they have not been producing the fruit of good works. They have been given a limited amount of time to repent, but if that doesn t happen they, too, will be cut down like the barren fig tree, like those who suffered the tragedy at Siloam or desecration at the hands of Pilate. The message of today s gospel can be summarized in one simple word: Repent!

5 Parish Lenten Retreat The season of Lent is a six-week transfiguration opportunity for us. You can become more aware of the presence of God in your life and come away changed, a sign of your future glory. Lent is the realization that we have hard limits and we allow God to put us in our place through the disciplines that we take up: prayer, fasting, almsgiving. Fr. Erik Lenhart will be our companion on the Lenten journey of transfiguration for us. The parish retreat on March 31 April 2 invites us into a deeper communion with God. John, the evangelist, writes, No one has ever seen God but we see and learn about God from those who follow him and those who have the gift of sharing their life of faith, prayer, and spirituality. Join us one or all of the evenings of our parish mission to reignite that fire. Strengthen your life of faith with the parish retreat at 6:00 PM at Our Lady of the Snows. The details follow: The gifts of Bread and Wine are offered in Memory of We recognize God s call to serve our parish family and neighbors near and far! Sunday, Celebration of God s Word with the combined OLS and St. Gregory Choirs. Monday, Celebration of Reconciliation with opportunity for individual confession. Tuesday, Celebration of closing Mass followed by Community Potluck. Father John Valet For anyone who needs assistance when attending mass while we are under construction, help is here! We ask you to please pull your car up to the sidewalk entrance on the OLP side of the rear parking lot at the rear of the rectory. One of our hospitality ministers will meet you to assist your passenger into church while you park your car. You may call in advance during the week and request help for a particular Mass. Parish Partners Our Community extends a special note of thanks to Monsignor Quinn and the OLS parish family for hosting The Light Is On For You, Lent 2019: Finding Peace in Christ, Stations of the Cross and Pivotal Players at Our Lady of the Snows Church during construction of the Ministry Center.
