1 Chapter 1 : Guide to Bible Study Sep 01, Â More than a dozen years ago I was a finalist for a reporting job at a small newspaper. All I needed to do was survive an interview with the top editor. The other editors warned me, saying their. Exploring the Bible Hello, friends! Welcome to this Bible study series on "Exploring the Bible. This first lesson will look at the first five books of the Bible, called the Law or Torah in the Hebrew. These books are also known as the books of Moses and the Pentateuch Greek for five scrolls. The Law and You the Torah or Pentateuch The first five books of the Bible set the foundation for everything that comes after them. The Bible is the story of two families, the divine and the human, and they are both introduced in the first chapter of Genesis. This divine family planned the entire creation for the purpose of creating the human family. And why did they create the human family? God wants to welcome more children into His divine family! It is the only book which presents itself as the written revelation of the one true God, intended for the salvation of man, and demonstrating its divine authority by many infallible proofs" Gleason L. The Bible starts with God and His human creation. The story of the first five books of the Bible lays the groundwork for all that follows, and the New Testament writers quote extensively from these first five books. What does the Bible say about its purpose and how we are to use it? Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. The Bible is how God speaks to us today. The recorded examples and the words of the prophets, apostles and Jesus Christ Himself are preserved to teach, admonish and encourage us. In 2 Timothy 3: The Bible sets doctrine teaching, refutes error, gives correction and provides instruction in the right way to live. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. There are no contradictions between the Old and New Testaments. They both reveal the same God, with the same spiritual laws, approach and purpose. Jesus tells us that the Bible is true and cannot be broken John Notice that Jesus described the Old Testament in three parts: In this series on "Exploring the Bible," we will cover the Law of Moses in this lesson, then cover the Prophets in three parts Former, Major and Minor and then the Writings. But the biblical evidence does not support the documentary hypothesis promoted by biblical critics such as Graf, Kuenen and Wellhausen in the 19th century. Their theory was that the books were compiled from four or more "written documents composed at different places and times over a period of five centuries, long after Moses" Archer, p. Archer concludes, "When all the data of the Pentateuchal text have been carefully considered, and all evidence, both internal and external, has been fairly weighed, the impression is all but irresistible that Mosaic authorship is the one theory which best accords with the facts" p. For more about the authority and accuracy of the Bible, see Is the Bible True? Genesis Genesis is a book of beginnings. We will see the themes and motifs of Genesis woven throughout the Bible, and especially in the last book of the Bible, Revelation, where Paradise lost is regained. The first 11 chapters of Genesis give only the essential stories and connections of more than two millennia of human history. Genesis 12 through 50 then focus on Abram whose name was changed to Abraham and his family, especially Isaac, Jacob later called Israel and Joseph. In it we find magnified images of sinâ stories of sibling rivalry, family conflict, hatred, rape, incest, sexual perversion, deceit, and a host of other destructive behaviorsâ "But we also find heightened images of virtue in Genesis. Of all the heroes in Genesis, Abraham looms largest. His example and the promises God made to him are foundational to the message of the rest of the Bible. How did Abraham become the father of the faithful? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Abraham believed God, and his belief was demonstrated by his actions. He set the example of faithful obedience that God calls on all His children to follow. What were the key promises given to Abraham? Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ. God made physical and spiritual promises to Abraham. The physical promises involved physical greatness for his descendants. These physical, national promises contained assurances of land and other blessings Genesis The apostle Paul Page 1

2 understood that salvation was not just for Jews or Israelites, but for all humanity. He explained that the "Seed" to whom the promises applied was Jesus Christ, and that all must become one in Him Galatians 3: Over time the Egyptians became frightened of this growing clan of Israelites and began to oppress them in slave labor. After 40 years of living like royalty, then fleeing and living 40 years as a humble shepherd, Moses heard God call him out of a burning bush. God was ready to use Moses to lead His people to the land He had promised Abraham. Exodus chapters 1 through 19 tell the story of how God worked with Moses and performed great miracles such as the 10 plagues and the parting of the Red Sea to free the Israelites from slavery. Then in chapter 20 comes the momentous highlight of the book, as God gave His Ten Commandments to His people. What are the basic spiritual laws spoken by God and written with His finger? For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. God wanted to impress on the Israelites and us the importance of these laws. And He wrote them on the stone tablets Himself Exodus Learn more about how each of these commandments apply to us today in the free booklet The Ten Commandments. These commandments were a foundational part, but only a part, of the agreement God offered themâ the Sinai Covenant or Old Covenant. The people accepted the agreement by saying, "All the words which the Lord has said we will do" Exodus But God knew that there was a problem with the Old Covenant from the start, and that problem was the rebellious human heart. The fault was with them, not the commandments Hebrews 8: But God planned a New Covenant to solve this by writing these perfect eternal principles on our hearts through the gift of the Holy Spirit: For more understanding of this important biblical concept of covenants, see The New Covenant: But in Exodus 32, the Israelites were already reverting to pagan worship with the golden calf incident. Leviticus The book of Leviticus was named after the tribe of Levi, the tribe God had given the responsibility to carry out the rules of worship. These rules emphasize and remind us of the holiness of God. The holy God says, "You shall be holy, for I am holy" Leviticus Leviticus chapters 1 through 7 give rules about the sacrificial system. The animal sacrifices pointed the Israelites toward the future sacrifice of Jesus Christ to pay for our sins. Animal sacrifices were only a type and could not forgive us Hebrews Chapters 11 through 15 give laws concerning what is clean and unclean, including which types of meat can be eaten. Leviticus 16 discusses the special ceremonies ancient Israel acted out each year on the Day of Atonement see " Atonement: Leviticus chapters 17 to 27 give more laws for holy living. What are the seven annual "feasts of the Lord"? It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lordâ " "Speak to the children of Israel, saying: You shall do no customary work on it. On the eighth day you shall have a holy convocation, and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. It is a sacred assembly, and you shall do no customary work on it. The Promise of Hope for All Mankind. Numbers "Numbers covers 38 years in the history of Israel: It begins two years after the escape from Egypt. It ends on the eve of entry into Canaan. What can we learn from this? Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. Then they told him, and said: It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. As Israel neared the Promised Land the first time, Moses sent out a man from each tribe to spy out the land. They found a productive and fertile land, but 10 of the spies focused on the giants and the dangers and discouraged the people to the point they wanted to kill Joshua and Caleb for trying to encourage them to trust God Numbers Even after all the miracles they had seen, they let fear destroy their faith, and they rebelled against God. So the whole generation over age 20 died out during the 40 years of wandering. As the apostle Paul showed in 1 Corinthians 10, this should serve as a warning for us today as well. Page 2

This particular edition is in a Hardcover format. This particular edition is in a Hardcover format. Related Media Graceful Beginnings: New Believers Guide is a series of lessons specifically designed for the new Christian in mindâ whether new to the Christian faith in general or new in understanding what one might have only heard about previously. The lessons are basic, introducing the new believer to her God and his way of approaching life in simple terms that can be easily understood. Just as a newborn baby needs to know the love and trustworthiness of her parents, the newborn Christian needs to know and experience the love and trustworthiness of her God. The seven lessons are: Your New Life in Community Lesson 6: A New Life of Obedience Lesson 7: The lessons encourage the young Christian to appreciate and enjoy this new relationship with Jesus Christ that is filled with treasure for her to know and experience. Help her to delve into her spiritual riches and to experience the kind of life our God has prepared for us all. Understanding and appreciating our rich treasure is best done in a one-to-one discipling relationship. A mature Christian, one farther along in her walk with Christ, should be the discipler, meeting with the new believers disciples â individually or as a small group Each lesson of Graceful Beginnings consists of two parts: How to Use as an Individual Study Though designed for one-to-one discipling settings, anyone can go through this study on his or her own. If you have questions about anything you are reading or learning, please ask another Christian you know and trust or me with your questions. Make sure both the discipler and each new believer have a copy of Graceful Beginnings. Agree to a definite starting and stopping time. Keep to that time, if possible. Make sure that each of you has a modern translation of the Bible to use. Begin and end with prayer. As you enjoy your instructional time together, give yourselves freedom to address any questions that came up during the week. As questions come up during the discipling lesson, choose to address them if relevant or plan to address them at a later time. It is not necessary that you write answers to the discussion questions while working through each discipling lesson. However, you should read the teaching material and all the Bible passages. Each new believer needs to know where to find these in her own Bible for future reference. Make sure you stay in the Scriptures. Reinforce the transferability of these lessons. Both of you can use them with any future disciples God brings into your lives. Enjoy your time together getting to know one another in the Lord. Rejoice in the truths you share together! We recommend that you both memorize the verses during the week. You may each choose to memorize the verse from your Bible rather than what is given. That is perfectly okay. The point is to begin a habit of memorizing Scripture. The 7 memory verses associated with the lessons are: Against such things there is no law. Jut as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples â if you have love for one another. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? 7 Chapter 6 : New Testament Study Guide EMBED (for racedaydvl.com hosted blogs and racedaydvl.com item tags). All I needed to do was survive an interview with the top editor. His lips curled into a sneer. To be fair, my job history was a tad unusual. I had spent five years in full-time ministry, including three as an evangelical Christian missionary in Kenya. I liked that he spoke his mind, but I was taken aback. I explained what I saw as a natural progression from the ministry to muckraking, pointing out that both are valid ways of serving a higher cause. The Bible endorses telling the truth, without bias. The Bible commands honesty and integrity. In journalism, your reputation is your main calling card with sources and readers. Obviously, many people have succeeded as reporters without strong religious beliefs. But I told him my faith had made me a better, more determined journalist. He replied with a noncommittal grunt. But I got the job. My response to that editor is more relevant than ever today. In fact, my convictions give me a foundation to be demanding. Yes, it occurred to me that God must have a sense of humor, if not irony, if his plan for me involved Sin City. I became a health care reporter and began gathering statistics that showed the local hospitals were not as safe as advertised. The articles we published led to new state laws that favored patients and jolted powerful institutions in Las Vegas. Journalists, particularly those who do investigative reporting, tend to annoy people in powerful positions. Some people might think that Christians are supposed to be soft and acquiescent rather than muckrakers who hold the powerful to account. But what I do as an investigative reporter is consistent with what the Bible teaches. So when I learned that medical mistakes are one of the leading causes of death in America, I called attention to the problem. The Apostle Paul points out that God comforts us so that we can be a comfort to others. The Bible rebukes deception and unfair practices. Proverbs talks about how hearing only one side of a story can be misleading: Another basic tenet of fairness is refusing to accept any gifts, of any amount. Our readers need to trust that our work is untainted by any reward. Most journalists admit their mistakes and run corrections. This is consistent with biblical teaching about humility. I love how Luke describes his mission in the first few verses of his Gospel: Luke told the story of Judas betraying Jesus. He exposed Peter denying Jesus three times. He verified the facts and then told the truth. The biblical mandate is to tell the truth. I started out in the Christian media and had run-ins with editors because of my interest in reporting about Christian leaders, even if it made them look bad. Administrators recently censored student journalists at Liberty University, a conservative Christian institution, for, in their view, making the school look bad. But God calls us to publish the truth, not propaganda. Today, in a nonreligious sense, journalists are the moral conscience of the wider culture. It takes some sinners a while to repent, and some never do. That means the influential people we expose might criticize us or call us names. But journalists are called to keep digging until we find the truth â and then proclaim it. Page 7

8 Chapter 7 : Home - New Christian Bible Study The New Testament is a collection of 27 books, usually placed after the Old Testament in most Christian Bibles. The name refers to the new covenant (or promise) between God and humanity through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. You have trusted in Jesus Christ. Someone shared the good news of the gospel with you. You recognized your need, you wanted this good news for yourself, and you accepted it by faith in Christ. You began a new life, one based on a relationship with Jesus Christ and filled with treasure that is yours to know and experience. In this series of lessons, you will delve into your spiritual riches and learn how to experience the kind of life your God has prepared for you. You can begin your new life in Christ with confidence and joy! The Gospel The Gospel is all that God has done, is doing, and will do through the perfect life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Gospel Defined God created us to enjoy relationship with himself. Our sin has separated us from a holy God and caused spiritual death in us. Trusting in Christ eternally unites us with him and other believers. Our new relationship with Christ gives us his presence and purpose in life. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Learning About Your New Relationship With Christ The Bible If you received a special letter or from Jesus telling how much he loves you and giving guidance you need for your daily issues, would you read it? Of course you would! It is the source of truth about your new life in Christ. Like reading a love letter increases your love for the author, reading and studying the Bible will help you to know your God better. You will discover many treasures in your new relationship with Christ. Some Bible Basics The Bible is one book containing a collection of 66 books combined together for our benefit. The Bible is divided into two main parts: It tells how the people of Israel obeyed and disobeyed God over many, many years. Bible references include the book name, chapter number and verse number s. For example, Ephesians 2: Bible apps also have a contents list by book. Throughout these lessons, you will use a Bible to answer questions as you discover treasure about your new life with Christ. How can a person who trusted in Christ know with certainty that he or she will spend eternity with God? You can know that you have a secure and personal relationship with God. The next section will highlight some Biblical truth to help ground you in this security in Christ. Read each Bible verse and think through the answers. Confidence In Your New Relationship With Christ You can be confident in your new relationship with Christ because you have been completely forgiven and accepted by God. What is declared in these verses? Three important words in these verses explain the basis of our acceptance before God: Unmerited favor, an undeserved gift Qâ What role did grace play in establishing your relationship with God? Rather it is a free gift from God that you accepted when you received Christ through faith. Rescued, spared from disaster Qâ What do you think this verse means by saying you are saved? From what are you rescued? When you received Christ, you put your trust in Christ and his death for your sin. You have been rescued from death and eternal separation from God. Belief, trust, commitment of mind, attitude, action Qâ What does faith have to do with receiving Christ? Aâ Simply put, faith is believing or trusting God and his Word. Discovering these truths will help you build a firm foundation to your faith. Christ forgave your sin. When you trusted Christ for the forgiveness of your sin, all your sins were forgiven What difference does it make to you to know that your sin is forgiven? Christ made you a child of God. When you received Christ, you began a loving relationship with God as his child. How important is that to you? Christ came into your life and will never leave you. Under what circumstances might Christ leave you? According to these last two verses, how many times is it necessary to receive Christ? Christ began a new life in you. Read 2 Corinthians 5: When you trusted Christ to be your Savior and Lord, you began a new spiritual life. God will increasingly produce many new qualities in you as you respond to him. Are you grateful that God has made all things new for you? Christ gave you eternal life. Read 1 John 5: On what is eternal life based? When will it end? If you were to die tonight, how sure are you that you would spend eternity with God? None of them can be earned. You received them the moment you placed your faith in Christ. Are any of these truths especially meaningful to you right now? Read the verses and record any reflections and responses you may have to what you read. In Page 8

9 Lesson 1, you have been introduced to the basis of your new relationship with Godâ faith in Jesus Christ. You have also looked at five truths about your new life in Christ. So, you can now have confidence in your new life with him. Renewing Your Mind with Truth To help you as you are becoming confident, memorize 1 Bible verse during each week. The Bible has been translated into English many times through the past years. If your Bible is a different English translation, you may choose to memorize the verse below from your Bible rather than what is given. That is perfectly okay. The point is to begin a habit of memorizing Scripture. Work on it a little bit every day. You will be surprised at how soon it just flows from your mind. Make them part of your life as you grow in Christ. Find and read the verses listed beside each truth. Write observations of what you see and how you feel about the truth in the space given. Thank God that this is now true of you. Knowing these essential truths are critical to our growth in Christ. You have a new life: Spend a few minutes each day reading the verses and reflecting on Jesusâ his life, his relationships, and his teaching. As you do so, you will get to know and understand him betterâ this One who loves you dearly. Tell him what you are thinking. Day 2 Discover Jesus Read: Reflect on what you readâ Day 3 Discover Jesus Read: Reflect on what you readâ Day 4 Discover Jesus Read: Reflect on what you readâ Day 5 Discover Jesus Read: Bring these to your Graceful Beginnings leader so she will know how to help you grow. What discoveries have you made? What questions do you have? Graceful Beginnings, Lesson 2.
