1 Thru the Bible in 8 Weeks Part 1: The Torah Genesis through Deuteronomy Background The Bible (Greek = Biblia = Books) is a library which contains 66 books o Written by 40 authors Over a period of approximately 1,600 years o Some authors wrote more than 1 book Moses the Torah John The Gospel, 3 Letters, Revelation o The Bible contains both the Old and New Testaments The Old Testament contains 39 books The time line is from Creation to the return of the exiles from Babylon o Approximately 3500 years The focus is God s covenant with Israel based on the Law of Moses. The New Testament contains 27 books The time line is from the birth of Christ to the creation of the new heavens and new earth and on into eternity from a prophetic standpoint. The focus is God s covenant with mankind based on Jesus sacrifice on the cross. Division We will divide the Bible into 8 Lessons; 4 in the Old and 4 in the New 1. The Torah a. Genesis - Deuteronomy 2. Historical a. Joshua - Esther 3. Poetical a. Job Song of Solomon 4. Prophets a. Isaiah - Malachi 5. The Gospels a. Matthew - John 6. History a. Acts 7. Paul s Letters a. Romans Hebrews 8. General Letters / Prophetic a. James Revelation

2 Purpose Why learn the Bible? It is the greatest book ever written o It is God s Word, which reveals His will and plan for man 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Inspiration = theopneustos = Theo = God; Pneo = Blow o God Breathed 2 Peter 1:20-21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Moved = of persons borne in a ship over the sea. Focus As well as being equipped through the Word we are going to focus on the primary figure in the Bible, Jesus Christ. We will pause to mention some of the many types and prophecies through the Old Testament as well as His life and ministry in the New. o Jesus to the 2 on the road to Emmaus Luke 24:25-27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. o Jesus to His disciples after His resurrection Luke 24:44-47 all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me The Old Testament points to the coming of Jesus as the Savior and the New Testament records that event. o As Augustine said more than 1,500 years ago, The New is in the Old contained; the Old is in the New explained. i The Torah The First 5 Books of the Bible are called o The Torah = Hebrew for Law o The Law of Moses Moses being the author o The Pentateuch = Greek for Five Volumes Genesis (Beginning) The Book of Beginnings 4 Major Events 1. The protevangelium, first gospel, the announcement of a prolonged struggle, perpetual antagonism, wounds on both sides, and eventual victory for the seed of woman. ii Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel. 3. The blood of animals is not valuable enough to atone for sin Hebrews 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. 2.
