The 7 I AMs of Jesus I Am the DOOR Lesson 4 1 st -5 th Grade March 16-17, 2019 *Curriculum Posted on CRCC Website* BIBLE LESSON Jesus said, Very truly I tell you, I AM the gate (door) for the sheep.. FOCUS VERSE: John 10: 7-10 Therefore, Jesus said again, Very truly I tell you, I AM the gate (door) for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I AM the gate(door); whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. MAIN POINT: Jesus is the DOOR. Those who enter through Jesus are saved. Announcements/Review of last week s lesson: [POWERPOINT SLIDE 1] - 7 I AMs of JESUS Overview [POWERPOINT SLIDE 2] - I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE John 6:35 I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD John 8:12 LARGE GROUP LESSON 30 MINUTES Begin at 6:20pm/9:20am/10:50am/12:20pm RECAP: (5 mins) We have been learning about the 7 I AM statements Jesus made, which are recorded in the book of John. Each time Jesus says I AM, we are reminded that He is God. Each I AM statement also reveals to us a new part of Jesus character - who Jesus is. So far, we have learned that He is the Bread of Life, and fills up all our spiritual needs. We have also learned that He is the Light of the World, and He lights up our spiritual darkness. Today we will learn about Jesus third I AM statement, which is found in John 10:7-10. Four students will read these to you now, and then when finished, share with us which is Jesus third I AM statement. LESSON: (30 mins) [POWER POINT SLIDE 3] Therefore Jesus said again, Very truly I tell you, I AM the gate (door) for the sheep. All who have come before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I AM the gate(door); whoever enters through Me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:7-10
LG-STORY ILLUSTRATION [POWER POINT SLIDE 4] Back in Jesus time, shepherds would usually keep their sheep in one of 2 types of pens. One (1) type of pen is a big pen found in cities, where several shepherds could keep their flocks, all of their sheep, all together. This type of pen had a door, which was guarded at night by a gatekeeper. In the morning, the shepherds would come and call their flock out. The sheep would follow only their shepherd because they knew his voice, just like the sheep in our story, and just like Jesus says in They won t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don t know his voice. Play YouTube Video-Shepherd Calling: The 2 nd type of sheepfold that was common in Jesus time and even today is a smaller pen out in the countryside. The shepherd keeps his sheep out here in good weather. The walls of these pens were made of piles of rocks, and there was no gate(door), just an opening for the sheep to enter through. To keep his sheep inside, and to keep wild animals out, the shepherd would lay across the opening to sleep. Jesus is the gate (door) for us. He keeps us safe and protects us from anything that could hurt us. Play YouTube Video Sheep/Shepherd: INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS Say: As Jesus is our Door, we re going to be discussing why do we have doors. So let s have some fun as we see different doors I wonder- can you guess which door it is? Play Narnia clip followed by PowerPoint of doors and ask children to guess which door is on each slide. [POWER POINT SLIDE 5] Picture #1- It is Buckingham Palace where the Royals live in London. Imagine if you arrived at the front door and after you rang the bell it was opened to you. You would have access to one of the most famous people in the world. [POWER POINT SLIDE 6] Picture #2-It is LEGOLAND. Imagine if you arrived at the front door and as you arrived it was opened to you. You would have access to having a really fun day in an amazing theme park. [POWER POINT SLIDE 6] Picture #3-It is Cinderella s Castle where Cinderella lives. Imagine if you arrived at the front door and as you arrived it was opened to you. You would have access to a beautiful castle. Ask: Now. Question Time?????? 1. Who has a door(s) in their home? 2. What are ways doors are used? Do you know why one of the 7 great I AMs of JESUS is that He Is the DOOR? 3. Can anyone share what it is that Jesus is protecting you from? (children will respond- write their responses on the white boards- make 2 columns: privacy, keep people in Protection keeps things/people out keeping things in barriers As we open doors they are also used to open and invite us to new day new choices, decisions, places, experiences, and opportunities He has in store for you? Say: So, would you agree that doors are important? (children will respond yes ). Like the story, we heard and saw that sheep are in different pens (like we are in our homes/school) and how doors/gates-openings with a watchman/our shepherd, Jesus- protects
and keeps us safe. Remember, we belong to Jesus, He is always with Us, He Will Not Leave Us or Forsake Us. Say: Jesus is our shepherd, and we are His sheep. Ask: But just like wild animals want to hurt the sheep, Scripture tells us in verse 10, that we have an enemy that does not want us close to Jesus and would want to hurt us and keep us from what God has planned for us. When scripture says that there is a thief - Who do you think is the thief? How do you think he kills, steals, destroys? satan is the thief, wanting to steal your time from doing what s right in God s eyes. The enemy wants to destroy the hope that God has put in each of us to make us feel Jesus is far from us and doesn t care about us that is a lie. Never listen to the lies of the enemy. Always remember that there is Good News, Jesus came that we may have life, abundantly and have it to the full. That s why He came down from heaven and died on the cross for our sins so that we may be saved and live with Him forever in heaven. Jesus Loves You, and You, and You (Repeat across the room to the children) and Me too! [POWER POINT SLIDE 7] IDENTITY IN CHRIST As a Christian, your Identity is in Christ because He is in you. Your identity is never what the world/popular culture says you are. You are His and your identity focus this week is: SAVED Always remember that WE ARE SAVED THROUGH JESUS CHRIST and once You are HIS no matter what - You Will Always Be SAVED. Romans 10:9-10 (NIV) If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. AIM- SAY: JESUS is our SAVIOR and the only one that can stand up against the plans of satan and HE Wins Every Time! GOSPEL APPEAL PREPARATION - DECISION FOR JESUS- FREE GIFT OF SALVATION: The most important decision we can ever make is to open the door of our heart and have an ever-growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Now, close your eyes and imagine what that means, you have access to Heaven because Jesus saves us from our SINS- the free gift of Salvation. When we receive an AMAZING GIFT, like at Christmas, don t you want to tell all your friends what you got? Be as excited, even more than any material gift, you have received an Eternal Gift, one that doesn t break, go out of style, you will outgrow as you grow up, but like a plant it will need to be taken care of: seeds planted in good and fertile soil, watered, placed in good place to receive sunlight, and pull out weeds by their root You are His plant in His vineyard hmmmm something to think about right? Remember that once you make a decision for Christ and you choose every day to be obedient, and follow Him you are His and you will always be- here on earth and in heaven. Now, Go and Share God s love with others, with everyone you meet. Make new friends in Christ. Give to those less fortunate, those that are hungry.. Did you know that there may be boys and
girls in your school that may not have enough to eat. If so, could you share your sandwich? Sit next to the new kid in school? That s being like Jesus. Follow His example. That s Missions! Go and Share the Good News of Jesus Christ That s Evangelizing! Did any of you Evangelize during FFN? Can you do that everyday? Jesus, commanded us to Go Forth and Make Disciples of All Nations ) You Are His Disciples! Now Go in Jesus Name by the Power of the Holy Spirit and Share the Good News of Jesus! He wants ALL His Children to Be Saved don t keep it to yourself. Share His Love! Lead other Children to Christ- so they may also have the free gift of Salvation! Win Souls for His Kingdom! GOSPEL APPEAL MOMENT ALL Teachers Pray and Main Teacher Say: Please do not leave today without having entered through the Ultimate Door Jesus so that you may be His friend, be saved and find pasture with Him forever? Don t answer these questions out loud, but think about them in your heart. Do you know Jesus? Do you believe who He says He is? Have you taken the next step to be in a relationship with Jesus? Have you ever asked Jesus to be your Lord and Savior? If you haven t yet, and you feel His Spirit His presence telling you today is the day, please do not leave here today without speaking to one of your teachers and join His family. When we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we no longer have to look for something else to fill us with purpose He always does. SMALL GROUP / LIFE GROUP LESSON (15 mins) Begin at 6:50pm/9:50am/11:20am/12:50pm DISCUSSION In verse 7 and 9, Jesus says I am the door of the sheep...whoever enters through Me will be saved. This is significant because it seems so simple that the only way to be saved is through Jesus. Being compared to sheep is not very flattering for us, why? Some characteristics of sheep: wander off, get themselves into situations like ravines and ditches with no escape, trusting and not wise to run when they see danger, can t see very well so they bump into things and get hurt a lot. So, really sheep need someone to look after them and that s a SHEPHERD. We need to be wise and follow Jesus because He is our shepherd, the only one who can protect us from the thief (satan), who comes only to kill, steal and destroy. Ask children to raise their hands if they ve ever been part of club/group of friend s/ sports team. If they have a secret handshake or password with that group of friends/club. Remind them that they belong to the most special group/club ever, the body of CHRIST. The only way that people can join is through the name of JESUS, accepting Him as personal Lord and Savior.
Ask children if they think they can use another name to be a part of this Amazing Club of JESUS and to enter the door/gate of the best Clubhouse (Heaven) ever. Remember in one of the videos, we saw a shepherd calling out to the sheep and the sheep recognized His voice (emphasize) just like the sheep in the video, we too, as children of GOD, will recognize His voice when He calls. We will come to Him and will follow Him. Ask children how can we become familiar with JESUS s voice when He speaks to us? How will we recognize His voice? Wait for the children s response (reading the Bible, Praying-silent and listening, Fasting-a sacrifice like taking a break from playing with our toys for a day(s) and Choosing to spend time with JESUS instead, Coming to church, Putting on the garment of Praise and Worship.. This aspect of the lesson should bring home the point to the children that the 7 IAMs of JESUS speaks to WHO He is to us His character, that He is our Shepherd and we are His sheep and we need to spend time with Him to know Him. Teacher, emphasize that Jesus is always ready and waiting for us to come to Him. He knows that we are not strong to stand up to the dangers of this world. He knows that we need a Savior and He became that for us when He died on the Cross. Jesus is the ONLY way, to the Father. SG GOSPEL APPEAL - Teachers AIM: SAY If you would like to accept Jesus Christ as your Personal Lord and Savior, please do not leave here today without speaking to me or one of your teachers. If a child believes that they have not entered through Jesus, walk them through what it means to accept Jesus free gift of salvation. If the child, speaking from their heart is able to share what is means to accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior then lead(ideally alongside their parent/guardian) or ask their parent/guardian to lead them in the Prayer of Salvation. When child(ren) accept the Lord please write down their name(s) on the Salvation Log and reflect on service checklist. If you feel unprepared to do this, please advise a KOR staff member to come alongside you. ACTIVITY** ACTIVITY** ACTIVITY** ACTIVITY** ACTIVITY** ACTIVITY** ACTIVITY** ACTIVITY** Life(Small) Group) Please read and prepare for Life (Small) Group portion below. Materials: Bibles, Reward Sheets, Stampers, Paper Doorknob Hangers, Colored Markers, Stickers Supplies: Paper Doorknobs and Colored Markers and Stickers Children/Team will DECORATE A DOORKNOB HANGER as a reminder that Jesus is the Door. They can keep this door knob hanger for their room/home or give it to a friend/family member as a gift to share the love of Jesus. They should write their name and if applicable, the name of the gift recipient. They may draw whatever the Holy Spirit puts in their heart that communicates that Jesus is the Door and all who enter through Him will be saved. Some recommendations: a picture of a Cross, Bible, Us as Sheep and Jesus our Shepherd, their favorite scripture, etc.
JESUS DOOR CHALLENGE: Whenever they enter into a place/thing that has a gate/door (car, school, home, sports field, park, playhouse, etc.). They have to repeat (out loud/in their hearts) the phrase JESUS you are my door, keep me safe. THE CHALLENGE IS 2 PARTS: 1- They must remember to say the phrase and to share it with family, friends, neighbors, etc. 2- They must recall how many times they used the phrase and who they shared it with. (They should write it down in their journal/piece of paper, bring with them to church, and be prepared to share with us next week of services how many times and who they shared it with.) Encourage the children to remind each other about the phrase and also remind/challenge them to use the phrase as they are leaving the classroom door. At Dismissal: - Play King s Kid Music. - Remind children/families to share the love of Jesus with everyone. - JESUS Door challenge. (Get them really excited about a new challenge and share with parents as they pick-up their child(ren). CLOSING Pray: Father God, You have made us all different. Help us each to do our part in making Christ's Body, the Church, grow. In His Name we pray, Amen.
