Issue 121 November 2013 So goes the old nursery rhyme, at any rate, though I suspect that these days most of us don't give much of a thought to who Guy Fawkes was or why he planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. We're more interested in building the biggest bonfire, finding the best firework display or getting through as much parkin and as many toffee apples as possible before the night is out. And then just a few days later on November 11 we find ourselves celebrating Remembrance Day, the date chosen to commemorate the armistice that put an end to the First World War. These collective acts of remembering mark events that have shaped our history, and thus our present. As we remember the past, we bring to mind the lessons it holds for us and - hopefully at least! - learn something to improve our lives today. But it's all too easy just to forget. Out of sight, out of mind - and suddenly key moments become little more than irrelevant and long-forgotten words on the pages of a dusty old history book. And you know what? The same happens with God. Unless we deliberately include him in our lives, the very idea of God fades into the distance. Yes, many of us think, he must be there somewhere, but our minds are on so much other stuff there simply isn't time or space to be bothered with him. That's precisely what an ancient book of wisdom was getting at when it tells us to Remember your Creator when you are young, before the days of trouble come and the years catch up with you. So between sparklers and poppies, Catherine wheels and twenty-one gun salutes, take a moment to remember your creator. Life is so much more worth living when you're back in touch with him. And if you need a reminder of just who God is and what he did for you, do drop in at any of our services or other activities; we'd love to help jog your memory! 2 Remember, remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot I know of no reason why gunpowder treason Neil Rees

6 7 Beyond the Compost Bin I was admiring the gardens during a short visit to Jersey, recently. The warm weather had encouraged the begonias and busy lizzies to stay in bloom, and the silver plumes of pampas grass swayed from green hillsides. One garden centre we visited had a twelve foot fern for sale. Resting on an enormous black pot, it boasted a 1,500 price tag. They did have two, a friendly assistant told me, but had just sold one of them. I informed him that, sadly, we would never get the remaining specimen on the plane! Travelling along the beautiful lanes of the island was a joy perpendicular cliffs on one side, and deep valleys on the other. Enormous trees, still very much in leaf, formed canopies overhead, the sunshine filtering through their branches. Sorry, I sound like a travel brochure! I did see something for the first time. I knew birds did it, but I had never seen it happening before. On a patch of manicured lawn a rather large seagull, having tired of searching for tourists with ice cream in their hands, was pounding ferociously on the ground with both feet, as if the surface was red-hot. Stamping up and down, unembarrassed by amused onlookers, he danced again and again. Eventually success was achieved by the appearance of a worm which had come to the surface in the mistaken belief that rain was battering the earth above. The following day he was there again with a few friends including a rather over-excited youngster, who he was keen to educate with his well-practised routine. Some seagulls have been known to choose pavements to tap-dance on. This has less effective results producing only sore feet! Soon it was time to return before the storm of October 28 th arrived, now known as St. Jude s Storm, when no sensible seagull would attempt dancing on the grass. It has been given this name because it is the feast day of St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes. He is also the patron of a football team in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Perhaps some teams in England should embrace him too, although I would never dare to suggest any local candidates! It is perhaps fortunate that the storm did not arrive the following day, October 29 th, as it might have been called the St Narcissus storm, after an early Christian who is the patron saint of insect bites. This Jude may have been the one who was brother of James and related to Jesus, and his short book, tucked away in the New Testament just before the last book of the Bible, typifies not a lost cause but a living victory. It is full of optimism, enthusiasm and encouragement during dreadfully difficult times for the first Christians. If you feel that you trip up rather than tap-dance, spare an ear to Jude when he says - (Jesus) is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy. By the way, you can see dancing seagulls on v=_ta3-a-xemw Ted Whitfield

8 9 Many congratulations to Molly Alexander from the Luncheon Club. Molly celebrates her 100th birthday on 6 November. Congratulations to Alan Mapstone who reached the age of 70 on 28 October only a youngster yet! Roy Regan is making slow but steady progress at home. Roy and Joy are very grateful for all the prayers and concern for Roy over recent weeks. Neil and Laura have spent the last 10 days in Ethiopia, where Neil has been teaching and training in cross-cultural communication, while Laura has been doing some English teaching. Lynn has been back in Spain visiting friends and attending a conference. Earlier in October, Lynn took part in the Ormskirk 10k run. She did very well coming second in her category. Well done to John Mackenzie, who starts a new job in January promotion to assistant head of science at Maghull High School. The Discipleship Explored Course has now come to an end with many folk finding it very helpful. We will now move back into home groups, either evening or daytime. The first of the monthly Leadership Course Training sessions was well attended. The next one is on 10 November at 8.45 am.

10 11 N eil s otes Did you get any ugly faces leering through your windows at Halloween? Or raw eggs thrown at your front door? Did you manage to somehow keep the little horrors at bay? Or were you too busy getting frightened out of your skin over at Farmaggedon to really notice?! Or maybe your pumpkin lantern was big enough to frighten them all away... Halloween gets mixed press and not just in Christian circles. For some it's pure commercialism, a thinly disguised American import that looks to make money by selling cheap plastic masks and tacky disguises. Others see it as a great excuse for a party - as if they needed one! - and a bit of harmless fun; as long as people enjoy themselves and don't cause trouble, what's the problem? Amongst Christians, opinions range from those who aren't really bothered to those who see it as a huge demonic deception, luring unwary and unsuspecting kids into pacts with the devil or turning them into victims of satanic oppression. Whatever we make of it, Trick or Treat is now firmly a part of UK Halloween celebrations, a child's version of a Mafia-run protection racket. In other words, you had better pay me what I am asking, otherwise something nasty might happen to you. Most would call that coercion with threat of violence or actual bodily harm - you'd certainly not get away with this kind of approach on any other night of the year or at any other stage in life! Whilst it remains in the realm of a few sweets and innocent pranks, it's not really an issue. But let's never ever think that this reflects acceptable standards of human behaviour. Just a couple of - quite unrelated - thoughts connected to all this. Firstly, whilst it did take over festivals of pagan origin, Halloween itself was actually a Christian invention. It speaks of the futile efforts of the forces of darkness and death to hold the world to ransom. Whilst they may run riot for a night, the morning inevitably brings light and banishes the darkness. Hell's minions are powerless in the face of the light of Christ whose life triumphs over death. So whilst popular culture depicts pumpkin lanterns and the like as attempting to ward off evil, in fact Halloween was the mocking jibes of God's people, secure in the knowledge that the life of God can never be extinguished. Whatever the night holds, light is not far off. And what about Trick or Treat? You might get that from the neighbour's kids, but never from God. God doesn't knock on the door of our lives with a menacing grimace, warning us that we'd better give him something nice or suffer the consequence of some random but unspecified act designed to harm us. God is not like that. Not at all. He doesn't demand anything, much less threaten us. He does stand and knock, and waits for us to open the door. God will never force himself on anyone. We enter the Christian life by choice, not coercion, attracted by what he offers us, not scared into submission. The treat is from him, for us, and tricks are nowhere to be seen. He stands before us and offers us grace and life and truth and love, asking only that we learn to love him as he has loved us, and never waving a big stick at us. His constant love is the only means he will ever use to draw you to himself. As Paul tells us, all of God's promises are Yes in Christ. So don't stand behind a closed door afraid to open it in case some hideous-faced goblin throws something at you! You can trust God. He has good things planned for you, and will never force you into anything. No tricks, just treats for us. Neil Rees

12 13 As darkness began to fall a group of teenagers were heading out by car to Southport to watch the National Musical Firework Competition. The roads surrounding Victoria Park were thronged with people. The excitement of the crowd could be felt as the young men, plus Rachael the lone female (unless Nala the dog should be counted) strode along the famous Rotten Row, passing people ready to watch the display leaning on walls and sitting on kerbs. The young men from The Core, CLM s group for older teenagers and their supporters, paused at the promenade end of Rotten Row to consider the best course of action. After a short discussion it was established by well-known teenage priorities and practice, as food first with a good view of the pending display coming second. It was agreed that the group divide with five mounting a sortie on the chippy by the pier entrance and three plus Nala agreeing to secure a good viewpoint for the whole group after saying they would eat later. Curry and chips, fish and chips, a chip barm and several cans of coke later, the Core group was reunited not too far down Rotten Row and stood together to watch some very impressive fireworks that provoked oohs and aahs, laughter and smiles. As the smoke finally cleared and the crowd began to shift, it was quickly decided that all the non-drivers would walk the prom heading for the pier and arcade while the drivers would collect the cars and meet the group at the arcade once the traffic had quietened down. The pier was crowded with hordes of excited young people. If you were a little over 20 years old you stood out like an Everton supporter in full regalia at Liverpool s Kop End! The Core members looked like elder statesmen and were invited, with due regard to their obvious age-status, to purchase alcohol on behalf of some young women who may have been just about teenagers. The Core members risked causing offence in their refusal to accede to the girls request. This incident pointed up for me the need for alcohol education and raised some questions in my mind about the exercise of parental responsibility. But not wishing to end on a negative note on what was an enjoyable evening, with stunning fireworks and lively banter in the good company of Core members, I look forward to the Core s next social event - a trip to see the Blackpool lights. But before that there is a Core discussion /Bible study with prayer and worship - may that be the very best of times and far more attractive than the finest firework and possessing more impact than the loudest of star-spangled bangs. May I encourage you to keep Core in your prayers, and may God answer by moving in powerful ways in the lives of Core members. Iain Mackenzie

14 15 Church is more than Sunday services. It's true, the Sunday service is probably the only time that everyone is together in the same place at the same time. But if the practice of our faith is limited to once a week on a Sunday, we really are missing out. It's not that Sunday services are not important the opportunity to worship together and hear God's word together is vital. And it's great to be able to chat to one another - though you probably won't get round everyone every week! But there are other dimensions of faith that we need in order to maintain a healthy faith. Alongside corporate worship and personal devotional life, some kind of small group expression is the most important of these. Jesus himself knew the value of this for alongside his ministry to the crowds, he also spent time just with his disciples. And even within the group of disciples it seems he particularly valued relationship with three of them, sharing significant moments with Peter, James and John by themselves. It is in the context of a small group that we can build significant relationships with others, support others in meaningful ways and receive support for ourselves. These groups can be informal - meeting occasionally with a couple of friends - or more formal - established activities that you take part in together with others. The important thing is the quality of relationship that is established and the commitment to one another that members of the group demonstrate. This month we will be starting our home groups again. (Home groups? House groups? Small groups?) The name doesn't really matter - it is the function that is important! I guess if a group meets in an apartment, it isn't really a house group. And if a group decides to meet at a café one day or go to the beach together, then it's not even a house group... So don't worry too much about labels, it's what the group does that matters, not what it's called.) So, November sees the restart of our home groups after the summer break and the Discipleship Explored course that we have been following together on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. If you've been in a home group before, you will know the value they have. Small groups contribute in so many ways to our Christian lives but I'd just like to highlight a couple of the real benefits of sharing with a small group in this way. Firstly, as a relatively small number of people are involved, a home group creates more intimate relationships between participants, allowing us to share our lives more deeply, be aware of what is going on for others in a way that is just impossible with the whole congregation, pray for others and receive their prayer for our lives and circumstances too. It takes a while to create that intimacy but it is well worth the time and effort involved. Even Jesus poured out his heart to a few of his friends, asking them to pray for and with him. How much more do we also need that! A small group creates the kind of support network that we need, both so we can give to and help others as well as receive support and help for ourselves in the different circumstances that life throws at us. Small groups also give us a context in which to express our gifts and serve others. Whilst we may occasionally be involved in some way on a Sunday morning and may participate in other activities too, the context of a home group involves many more people in a wider range of activities and ministry. Everyone can find a meaningful role and find themselves doing something that serves others. It thus gives us channels to use the gifts God has given us as well as letting us experiment in a safe context and discover other ways in which we can serve God and his people. Beyond that, small groups also provide an excellent context for Bible study and learning together. If we want to understand more about our faith and dig into God's word, a small group is a sure way to learn. Studying with other people somehow earths Bible study and makes it real and others' experience and understanding can go a long way towards making sense of some passages that otherwise might not make a lot of sense to us. So, whether we are leading a study ourselves, chipping in with our own thoughts or just listening to others as they share their insights, Bible study in a small group will always deepen our understanding of Scripture. So let me encourage you to join a home group. Whether you were a regular attender last year or have never taken part in one, do think about taking the opportunity to join one right at the beginning you can always join later, but at the start is by far the best time as this is when members are starting to get to know one another better and the group is developing its own character. We plan to have a day-time group meeting this year so if you don't like going out in the dark winter evenings, that may be the group for you. If you've not put your name down yet, or want to talk a bit more about joining a home group do speak to myself or Carolyn and we'll be glad to have a chat about it. Neil Rees

20 21 THE SHEPHERD I sat on the sward in the soft evening breeze, A rustic at rest, simply taking my ease. The bumble bee droned as he wended his way. Back to his hive, at the end of the day. The sun bathed the sky flaming orange and red, In a glorious canopy over my head. Sinking low now, the sun cast his shadows so deep, As nearby me a shepherd was rounding his sheep. I thought of the Shepherd who died on the cross, To rescue His loved ones and save them from loss. How He ever watches over each of His own, Directing their lives from His Heavenly Throne. I thought of His Spirit, who knoweth His will, And guides us, enables and keeps us until, He perfects and presents us before Him at last, When all of life's trials and dangers are past. His dogs went before, now stalking, now bounding, In response to the signals the shepherd was sounding. With a call or a whistle, a wave of his hand, He gave signals that only his dogs understand. How clearly those dogs could interpret his will. They collected each straggler, ranging over the hill. Until every last one to the flock was restored By the man and his dogs who, with perfect accord, Watched over the flock as they wended their way Oh Father, I thank Thee for showing to me, In sheep, dogs and shepherd, a picture of Thee. The sun sank at last and the evening grew still, And I was alone on my sanctified hill. Keith Venables

22 23 CLM Church just wasn't the same over the summer... You see, over the last year we had got used to having a bunch of Edge Hill students with us for Sunday services so when they went home for the summer... it left a big hole, and not just in terms of bums on seats, but the life they brought to us. So it's great now that term has started to have students with us again - both those who were with us last year (welcome back!) as well as a number of freshers or others coming to us for the first time (welcome!). We really do want Cottage Lane to be a place that blesses the socks off students (metaphorically!) and We really do want Cottage Lane to be a place that blesses the socks off helps inject significant Christian content into their university experience. Time as a student is such a key time for building character and setting direction for the rest of life; it is so important that students can explore their faith and grow as disciples, becoming the kind of people who live out a vibrant Christian faith and can impact the world around them for the kingdom of God. With this in mind, we will have a few activities running over the course of the year that are specifically geared towards students. Sunday breakfast is a good place to start...hosting lunch in church once a Sunday breakfast is a good place to start. 10am before the service, the chance to start the day around a table with others. Tea and toast, cereals, and even the occasional bagel! Sharing food together is an excellent way for people to get to know one another and build relationships. Speaking of food, we will also be hosting lunch in church once a month. For other Sundays, there is a sign-up sheet in church where students can say if they fancy lunch in someone's house the next week. And if you want to offer to give lunch one Sunday, do sign up on the list (in the right place!) too....starting a small group for students too, meeting once a week during Elsewhere in this month's magazine we talk about small groups and their value for us as Christians. With the same benefits in mind we will be starting a small group for students too, meeting once a week during term time starting November 5 th, as a place to grow in their faith as well as share faith with others. We would like students to feel as much part of the church as anyone else. It is not about students (them over there) and church (the rest of us) -rather, it is students and the rest of us together that make up church. We will no doubt see some of them involved in different activities and serving in church along with the rest of us. Whilst it might be a bit of a challenge, do try to get to know them as individuals, not just one of the students, and pray for them with any specific needs they may have. Finally, as we welcome students into CLM, let's also consider before God our responsibility towards Edge Hill University. I know we tend to hear complaints from local residents about students, as if they were the root of all the town's evils, but God has given us the privilege of having this university here in Ormskirk. Universities are key places for Christian witness today God has given us the privilege of having this university here and as a church we do need to consider how we can best be salt and light in this place and support those who live and study or work on campus. Edge Hill's motto, In Scientia Opportunitas - In Knowledge there is Opportunity - invites us to also give students the opportunity to know God, and in that knowledge to find meaning and purpose for their whole lives. 14 26 27 Where Are They Now? I can t believe it has been 18 months ago since I said goodbye to everyone at Cottage Lane Mission. At the time I was still working part time for Ormskirk Parish Church, a role that took me into Greetby Hill Primary and Ormskirk School, and Darren and I had settled for Maghull Baptist Church as our new Church home. A year and a half later much has happened, and God has shown His grace at every step. Since I had managed to catch up on CLM news through facebook and from occasional meetings with Church members, I was pleased to have the opportunity to share ours. So here we go As we joined MBC the FOG leader stepped down and I was invited to step in. So I took over the running of a group of 4-7 year olds. Half an hour after FOG is Kids Klub (age 7-10) and I am part of the leadership team for that group. Thursday evenings are very busy! In January Darren was successfully interviewed for the role of Administrator at the Church. He works in the mornings then in the afternoons he works as a Transcriber for Edge Hill University. He also helps me with the projects I do. One such project took place over the summer when we launched a Make Lunch kitchen in Tanhouse, Skelmersdale. Each Tuesday of the summer holidays we opened for two hours, providing activities, a hot two course meal and support for families in the area. Week one, we had 19 children from 9 families. By the Bank Holiday we had over 70! We plan to run a Christmas event in December. Revolution, my long standing dream, took place on October 5 th as planned. We had speakers from all over the world and as part of the day we gave away 3000 to six youth led projects across the region. It was a lot of work but we look forward to another next October! After my contract at the Parish ended in June, the school agreed I could stay as a volunteer. To my surprise the school also agreed to let me take a small group of young people on a trip called ReBuild, led by Urban Saints. Taking place next Easter, up to 150 young people from across the UK head over to Tijuana, Mexico and using just basic hand tools, the young people and leaders work alongside local craftsmen to construct a home for a family that needs one. To make the experience as authentic as possible, for the duration of the trip, everyone camps and lives a more simple life, with bucket showers, outhouses and no electricity. On April 10 th 2014 I am taking a group of three young people, along with another leader. To conclude, I want to thank you for the tremendous support shown during my time at Cottage Lane. There will be many fundraising efforts over the coming months and it would be lovely to see you at the events. Perhaps I could bring Luke, Alex, Dan and Sarah to Church to share more about the trip and report back when we return. We particularly appreciate your prayers, especially for our health, safety and unity. We in turn pray for you; for God s continued guiding hand and leading as you step out into all He has for you. Hope to see you all soon! Blessings, Vikki & Darren xx
