2 Pastoral Planning Inverness Deanery A Pastoral Planning Committee was appointed for Inverness Deanery in the Spring of 2014 Our mandate: to look at how we can best serve the pastoral needs of the parishioners in the Deanery.

4 Questions to be considered What makes a sustainable parish? How many diocesan priests will be available in the future for ministry? What are the present clusters of parishes? What are the demographics of Inverness County? What are the distances between churches? What is the capacity and the weekly attendance for each church in the Deanery? What are the mass schedules for each church? What are the finances of each parish?

5 What makes a sustainable parish?

6 Keys to a Sustainability A sustainable parish is based on, but not limited to: sufficient population to ensure a celebration of the Eucharist; that has all the ministries available, so that the liturgy will nourish all present; that recognizes that within rural parishes, the church is the very center of the community; that can provide the basic ministries of word, worship, service, and leadership; that can have the appropriate number of ministerial personnel, including priests, deacons and lay ministers (music ministry, youth ministry, etc.);

7 Keys to Sustainability that has an adequate population with proportionate numbers of parishioners attending Sunday liturgies; that can extend formation to all the members of the faith community, religious education etc; that can operate with the financial contribution of parishioners; one where the need for pastoral care is considered (the number in religious education, baptisms, funerals, etc, and presence of nursing homes and hospitals; one where the size and physical condition of the church and other parish buildings will serve the needs of the parish; one where special characteristics are acknowledged.

8 What do we look like The Inverness Deanery currently has 15 parishes 10 of the 15 parishes are divided into 4 clusters We have 9 priests and one Deacon serving these churches. We are expecting a 40% decrease in Diocesan Priests available within five years.

18 Questions There are fewer people coming to church and it is quite likely that in the very near future that there will fewer priests to serve us. So let s start thinking creatively: With fewer priests and fewer people what would be the priorities? How can we rethink our approach to ministry, service and mission in order to maximize the opportunities that are available to us?
