2 The Third Week of Trinity Tide June 2018 This Week in the Church Year The devil deceived us, enticing us to disregard and disobey the Word of God, and driving us to hide from the presence of the Lord God. But the Lord Himself is our Champion. He is the stronger Man, who binds the strong man, Satan, by atoning for the sins of the world, removing the condemnation of the Law and the fear of death. Now He plunders the devil s house by calling us to repentance. Therefore, we do not lose heart, although we feel and experience our sin and the weight of our mortality in the frailty of our fallen flesh. For He who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will raise us also with Him. By His grace, we are being renewed day by day, and by His Gospel He is daily bringing us into His presence, not for punishment, but for an eternal weight of glory in Christ Jesus. 4 The Catechism: The Table of Duties TO BISHOPS, PASTORS, AND PREACHERS A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence. (1 Timothy 3:2 4) He must not be a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. (1 Timothy 3:6) He must hold fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. (Titus 1:9) WHAT THE HEARERS OWE THEIR PASTORS The Lord has commanded that those who preach the Gospel should live from the Gospel. (1 Corinthians 9:14) Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. (Galatians 6:6 7) Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain, and, The laborer is worthy of his wages. The Feast of St. Barnabas, Apostolic Missionary Monday, 11 June St. Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus who sold some land and gave the proceeds to the early Christian community in Jerusalem (Acts 4:36 37). St. Paul informs us that he was a cousin of John Mark (Colossians 4:10). Barnabas was sent by the Jerusalem Church to oversee the young Church in Antioch (Acts 11:22). While there he went to Tarsus and brought Paul back to Antioch to help him (11:25). It was this Church in Antioch that commissioned and sent Barnabas and Paul on the first missionary journey (13:2 3). When it was time for the second missionary journey, however, Barnabas and Paul got into a dispute over bringing John Mark with them. Barnabas

7 took Mark and went to Cyprus; Paul took Silas and headed north through Syria and Cilicia (15:36 41). Nothing more is known of the activities of Barnabas, except that he was apparently known to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 9:6). Tradition relates that Barnabas died as a martyr in Cyprus, being stoned to death. Commemoration of the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, A.D. 325 Tuesday, 12 June The first Council of Nicaea was convened in the early summer of A.D. 325 by the Roman Emperor Constantine at what is today Isnuk, Turkey. The Emperor presided at the opening of the Council. The Council ruled against the Arians, who taught that Jesus was not the eternal Son of God but was created by the Father and was called Son of God because of His righteousness. The chief opponents of the Arians were Alexander, the Bishop of Alexandria, and his young deacon, Athanasius (who later succeeded Alexander as bishop). The Council confessed the eternal divinity of Jesus and His equality with the Father, and adopted the earliest version of the Nicene Creed, which in its entirety was adopted at the Council of Constantinople in 381. Commemoration of the Prophet Elisha Wednesday, 14 June Elisha, son of Shaphat of the tribe of Issachar, was the Prophet of God to the northern kingdom of Israel, ca B.C. Upon seeing his mentor Elijah taken up into heaven, Elisha assumed the prophetic office and took up the mantle of his predecessor. Like Elijah, the Prophet Elisha played an active role in political affairs. He also performed many miracles, such as curing the Syrian army commander Naaman of his leprosy (2 Kings 5:1-27) and restoring life to the son of a Shunammite woman (2 Kings 4:8-37). A vocal opponent of Baal worship, Elisha lived up to his name, which means my God is salvation. Looking forward to the Third Sunday after Holy Trinity 17 June 2018 Hymns: LSB #577; LSB #586; LSB #652; LSB #823; LSB #834; LSB #901 Ezekiel 17:22 24: The Lord God brings down the high and exalted tree, and raises up the lowly tree to bear much fruit. So does He humble the proud and exalt the penitent, all by the way and the means of His Law and His Gospel. 2 Corinthians 5:1 17: Though we live for now in the frail tent of mortal bodies, by faith we live unto God in Christ, looking toward that eternal dwelling which God has prepared for us in heaven. There shall we live and abide with Him forever, in bodies resurrected and glorified, like unto the glorious body of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, in all that we do under the cross, within our vocations on earth, we proceed by faith and not by sight, living before God in the righteousness and purity of Christ, which is ours by grace through faith in Him. St. Mark 4:26 34: The Parables of our Lord convey the mysteries of the Kingdom of God to those who are catechized (by the Law and the Gospel) to fear, love and trust in Him above all things. It is, indeed, the Seed of His Word that causes true growth in the Christian faith and life. As the Word of His Gospel takes root in us, it sprouts and matures and produces the good fruits of faith, which glorify the Name of God among us and serve our neighbor in holy love.
