2 Day of Pentecost May 20, 2018 On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Spirit, through whom and in whom the people of God are created and re-created. Pentecost is sometimes called the church s birthday, but might more appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is the fullness of baptism. Ezekiel s vision shows the Spirit resurrecting and re-creating not just individuals but a whole people. Romans makes it clear that God is in the process of re-creating the entire cosmos; yet the Spirit is also at work in the most intimate and personal way, praying in us with sighs too deep for words when we do not know how to pray. First Reading: Acts 2:1-21 Originally Pentecost was a Jewish thanksgiving-type festival celebrated seven weeks after Passover. On this particular Pentecost, however, the Holy Spirit is poured out upon the entire community of believers just as Jesus had promised and the scriptures had prophesied. Empowered by the Spirit, the entire community bears witness to God s activity in multiple languages. 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? 13 But others sneered and said, 2 They are filled with new wine. 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

5 Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod Assembly June 14 16, Thiel College, Greenville, PA. The 2018 Synod Assembly will be held at Thiel College, Greenville, PA, June This Year s Theme is Who Is My Neighbor? The 2018 Synod Assembly will be in conjunction with the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod. We will be sharing parts of our agenda and the campus with our brothers and sisters of NWPA. We will join together for worship, meals, and fellowship. We will share our keynote speaker and our ELCA representative. This year our ELCA representative is Ms. Mikka McCracken, Director, Planning and Engagement, ELCA World Hunger. We will have two keynote speakers. Ms.Kathryn M. Lohre, Assistant to the Presiding Bishop and Executive for Ecumenical and Inter-religious Relations will speak, and Ms. Mikka McCracken will also present one keynote. We welcome Ms. McCracken and Ms. Lohre. The interfaith band Abraham Jam will provide entertainment on Thursday evening. The concert is free and open to the public. Perry Highway Lutheran is able to send three representatives from the congregation in addition to Pastors Ferguson and Carlsson. Reconciling in Christ Event Pittsburgh Pride Weekend Pittsburgh Pride Weekend is June 9 10, As one of four RIC congregations in Pittsburgh we have been asked to have representatives available at the RIC Booth during the Annual Pittsburgh Pride Weekend. We are seeking individuals who would be available on Saturday, June 9 th between 12:00 noon until 5:00 PM and Sunday, June 10 th from 1:00 pm until 7:00 PM.
