2 Dear MSBC, I don t know if you realize it, but the month of June is known for a lot of things. The month itself is notable for two customs. First is the custom of marriage. Ever heard the term "June bride"? It refers to the fact that more people get married in June than any other month. Contrary to popular belief, this tradition did NOT come about because of the dependable weather. According to some classical scholars, the month is named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, and thus the tradition of marriage in June has come down to us even to today. The second custom, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, is that of family vacations, which generally begin in June with the end of the school year. The month of June is also noted for its special monthly emphases and special days. June is Dairy Month, Great Outdoors Month, National Adopt-A-Cat-Month, National Iced Tea Month, National Tennis Month, and National Zoo and Aquarium Month. Special days include Egg Day, Cheese Day, National Gingerbread Day, World Environment Day, Applesauce Cake Day, National Yo-Yo Day, Day Baseball Invented Day, World Juggling Day, Fly A Kite Day, Eat Your Vegetables Day, International Picnic Day, Juneteenth, Ice Cream Soda Day, and Summer Solstice (the first day of summer), just to name a few. But perhaps the most important date in June is the one we annually celebrate Father s Day. For the first time in my lifetime I will celebrate Father s Day this year without my father, who went home to be with the Lord Jesus in April. As I write this article, I feel the pain of my father s absence, but at the same time, I am encouraged by the presence of the lessons I learned from his life and lips. As I reflect on my father s life, I learned at least eight invaluable lessons from him. I share these with you not only in honor of him, but in the hope that they will be instructive and encouraging to you, especially for the fathers out there. I think you will find them both practical and biblical. The lessons are as follows: 1. Be genuine what you see is really what you get. 2. Be humble don t arrogantly think/act like you are better than others. 3. Be respectful people will generally return the courtesy. 4. Be courageous don t complain when times get hard. 5. Be a provider as the man of the home, work hard and be responsible. 6. Be loving especially to your wife & children and to those who don t deserve it. 7. Be a disciplinarian lovingly but firmly to your children; they will thank you later. 8. Be helpful don t kick people when they are down; help them up! My father had his flaws and he readily admitted them, but he left a positive influence on and in my life and the lives of others. I hope as a flawed individual, when my time on this planet is over, my children can say the same about me as their father. I hope they will be able to enumerate practical, biblical lessons from my life that they can utilize and pass on to their children and to others. I hope and suspect you feel the same, if you are a parent. So, like my dad (and my mom), get out there and make those positive memories and teach those life-enriching life lessons. You will be blessed for doing so, and others, including your children, will be blessed as a result. Enjoy all the richness the month of June offers. And dads, have a Happy Father s Day! 3 BROKEN When we purchase an item from the store we expect it to be in good working order, don t we? If we find it not to be in good working order, or not living up to what the manufacturer claims, we either trash it or return it to the store. Our understanding of the product and expectations demand that the product will function as it was made to function no flaws or malfunctions allowed or our satisfaction level decreases and the product s lifetime comes to a quick end. A product is designed and redesigned, tested and retested for quality assurance before it goes into production. Every product must pass the requirements for public release. This quality assurance testing isn t just something that product makers use for their products to determine value. Unfortunately, we have learned to apply this quality assurance testing to other people in order to determine their value. This is unfortunate because this system flies in the face of the gospel of Jesus on a spiritual level. This is not to say that we should not examine a person s fruit. It simply means that my heart needs to be in a different place when examining others. I need to examine others, first, in the light of the love of Christ. The quality of a person is predetermined by God before they were ever conceived. Genesis 1:27 (NIV) says, So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Because mankind was created in the image of God himself, man s default value setting is on MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD. We know that man became - flawed, malfunctioned -, broken in the Garden of Eden. Man used his own will to disobey the instruction God had given. Man became a flawed product from that day on. And by replicating this flawed man, the flaw in this man has also been replicated. It s more than just a flaw actually. It was willful disobedience a violation against God s instruction. It is SIN. It is certain death of man. That s the bad news. The good news is that God has provided a Redemption Plan for all mankind. God responds to the brokenness of people in a very different way from the world s system. He doesn t trash anybody. He doesn t give Himself a full refund. He can, however, make an exchange. With God, NOBODY is a lost cause! We are broken people and Jesus handles the Exchange Plan of God. Here is the Exchange Plan: When we come to Him in our brokenness, Jesus takes His perfect and sinless life and offers it to us in exchange for our sinful and broken life. That s it. No hassle. No proof of purchase required. A simple exchange. Jesus enters into our brokenness to bind up the wounds, forgive, heal, restore and give us all new life in Himself through His sacrificial death on the cross. We just need to bring it to Him. Bring it ALL to Him and receive ALL of Him. King David is a perfect example of a broken man who understood how the Exchange Plan worked. Even in the Old Testament. He writes: You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, you, God, will not despise. (Ps. 51:16-17) You are GOD S BELOVED! Created in His image! This GOOD NEWS! If you really think about the depth of this truth, doesn t it make you want to sing and shout from the mountain tops that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD and that HE REIGNS!!! Let the Broken come to Him. Because of Jesus, Don

They will need to be picked up after Bible Fellowship Class time where they will sit with their parents during the music portion of our morning service. 5 CHOIR NOTES FOR JUNE, 2017 Recently I attended a Christian retreat at Broaddus, Texas. It is an annual event called the Martin Christian Jubilee and has a lot of good preaching and singing by several gospel groups. This year the camp pastor was Bro. Harold Clayton, an elderly preacher well known in that part of the state, who is still a very good speaker. His first sermon was entitled: Give Me a Zeal for the Lord. It is based on 2 Kings 10: 16: Jehu said, Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord. Jehu had been anointed King of Israel. 2 Kings 9: 7 says: I have anointed thee King over the people of the Lord, even over Israel. The Lord told Jehu in 2 Kings 9:7: And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy Master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel. The rest of 2 Kings: 9-10 tells how Jehu zealously attacked the enemies of the Lord, Joram the son of Ahab and King of Israel, and Jezebel, mother of Joram. Jehu did as the Lord had commanded him to do and destroyed the Baal worshipers. Bro. Clayton said that as Christians we should desire for our zeal for the Lord to be restored and strengthened. His message had 7 points: 1. As Christians we are to be zealous for the Lord s work when He asks us to do something. We are not to be apathetic or lazy in our work for the Lord. We should perform our work enthusiastically and lovingly. 2. We are to be zealous about our support for, defense of, and study of God s word, the Bible. We need to know what the Bible says so we will know what to do, how to act, and who to help. 3. We should work zealously for God s House, His Church. As Christians we have to support our church, we have to attend, and we have to stand up for His church. We are supposed to be regular attenders, defenders and supporters for His church. 4. We should show a zeal for God s people. We should love, help, pray for, and demonstrate a Christian attitude and spirit toward everyone. 5. We are to be zealous in our giving. We are to be a cheerful and generous giver to God s church and God s work. 6. We are to be zealous for our support of what is right and good. God expects us to be a righteous people and support the right things. 7. We are to be willing to work zealously for the Lord s Kingdom. How will others know if we don t tell them and show them by our example? Our Christian lives might be all they ever see. People are watching Christians. This sermon reminded me that sometimes we lose our zeal for the Lord s work and that we all need to be about the business of serving and promoting the Lord. We need to proclaim Jesus and His love and grace toward everyone. An old song that we sing sometimes reminds me of this truth. It is called Jesus Saves, written by Priscilla J. Owens who was a public school teacher in Baltimore, Maryland in She was a hymn writer and poet in her spare time. She was a gifted and inspired writer who was a zealous worker in the Methodist church. We have heard the joyful sound; Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Spread the tidings all around; Jesus saves! Jesus saves. Bear the news to every land, Climb the steeps and cross the waves. Onward tis our Lord s command; Jesus saves! Jesus saves. Waft it on the rolling tide; Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Tell to sinners far and wide; Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Sing ye islands of the sea, Echo back your ocean caves. Earth shall keep her jubilee. Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Give the winds a mighty voice; Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Let the nations now rejoice; Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Let the nations now rejoice, Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Shout salvation full and free, Highest hills and deepest caves. This our song of victory, Jesus saves! Jesus saves! May we all become more zealous about the Lord and His work and love Him more and tell others about His amazing salvation and grace. We still need more singers in our choirs. Please consider joining us. We welcome any age singer, young, youth, middle age, or Sr. adult. We are working on some new music right now and we would welcome anyone to join us.
