A Model For Missions Recently my wife, Emily, and I were discussing the importance of modeling contentment and a generous spirit in our home. From an early age, children pick up on their parents attitudes and display the same attitudes for better or for worse. What we model is what our children will emulate. One of my most frequent prayer requests to the Lord is for my children to develop a heart for the lost at home and around the world. I pray they develop a generous heart to freely give of the talents and resources God has entrusted to them to see the message of Christ proclaimed to a world in desperate need of His healing. I also pray I will model this life for them. From an early age, I was exposed to world missions. I clearly remember our family hosting people from around the world, including the Middle East, Asia and Africa. No doubt, these experiences shaped my worldview and my passion for evangelism and world missions. What my parents modeled for me, we now hope to model for our children. I hope you will share with your children the work you are investing your prayers and resources into with Leading The Way. Whether it is sharing a devotional, a field report, or information about the importance of our outreach in Indonesia this month let them see your passion for this work and your hope for the nations Jesus Christ. May our ministry be a key part in helping you to build a godly family focused on impacting our world for Christ! These role models should be found within their own families in mothers and fathers and grandmothers and grandfathers committed to Jesus Christ. The example they see in their homes will direct them throughout their lives. What our children do not need are split-personality parents the public parent and the private parent the parent who believes and behaves one way in church and around believers, but is quite different at home. This is not the life of integrity we are called to as Christians, and children innately know it s wrong. Most Christian parents set out to build godly families. However, life gets busy and time with the Lord moves down the priority list. Soon, personal devotion is abandoned completely. Without this regular, intentional time seeking the Lord s will, the family begins to be impacted by the culture rather than impact the culture for Christ. It is a slow process of decline brought about by daily neglect of the most important element of a godly family the foundation, Jesus Christ. This decline is then mirrored in the culture. As the family goes, so goes the culture. I hope this month s journal on Building Godly Families will encourage you to put Christ first in your life so that you may live a life of faith in Christ that impacts your family, your church, and the surrounding culture. In Christ, Michael Youssef, Ph.D.

FEATURE Have you ever suffered from a bad attitude not just a short-term bad mood, but an allencompassing negative view on life? When we neglect our relationship with Christ, our thoughts my journal 2

become influenced by our sinful human nature instead of being guided by the Holy Spirit. When we forget to draw on God s power to lead our hearts, we quickly succumb to bad attitudes. We become impatient and selfish. We whine when things do not go our way. We become dissatisfied with where God has placed us. We grumble against God s will for our lives. We complain about our families, friends, other believers and our spiritual leaders. way. We are no longer drawing on God s power, but are trying to rely on our own strength. As we drift further from Christ, joy decreases and misery increases. A bad attitude is a significant enough problem when it affects our personal walk with Christ and steals our joy. But a far greater consequence of our grumbling is the effect it has on others in our lives, including the nonbeliever. When we allow our bad attitudes to eclipse our joy, we not only hurt ourselves, it hurts our testimony When we face trials and crises, we can continue forward in confidence and with joy, knowing Christ is with us. How quickly we forget the joy of our salvation. When we accepted Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit gave us overwhelming joy. Do you remember how you felt on the day you became a Christian? Were you so overwhelmed with gratitude for God s love and mercy that you wanted to shout to the world what God had done for you? That bliss was never meant to be a one-time gift. God wants us to experience His joy every day for the rest of our lives. We must work to keep it strong. At the core of our joy is our relationship with Christ and our obedience to Him. When our joy begins slipping and we begin to grumble against God, it is a sure sign we are trying to do things our own for Christ. Who would be attracted to the Christian faith when Christians are miserable, complaining, and bitter? Why would someone want to come to a church when its members bicker, gossip, and backbite against each other? Who would you rather be: the person who spreads misery or the person who spreads joy? As Christians we have a serious responsibility to witness for Christ. We are therefore Christ s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us (2 Corinthians 5:20). We may think we are containing our grumbling and murmuring to ourselves, but the attitude of our hearts will show in how we treat others, the things we say, and in may 2013

FEATURE our actions. When we forget our joy, our testimony is no longer about the glory of Christ but about our own misery. How do we live as positive testimonies for Christ? We show our faith through our conduct, the way we live, our obedience to Christ and in the joy that our relationship with our Creator brings us. As we follow Christ each day, we manifest the fruit of the Spirit and radiate our eternal joy. When we are walking in obedience to Him, He will continuously pour His power into our lives. The world will see the power of the Resurrection in us as we are transformed more and more each day in Christ-likeness. When His power is fully at work in us, our joy will be infectious, and others will want to know Jesus. The Apostle Paul told the Philippians, Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing (Philippians 2:14-16). When we are experiencing full joy, we cannot help but let that show outwardly to everyone around us. When we face trials and crises, we can continue forward in confidence and with joy, knowing Christ is with us. When we experience great successes, we can rejoice in the blessings that God has given us. Our gratitude and thanksgiving will overflow and show the world we worship a truly amazing and sovereign God. The world is always watching us. Whether we want to be or not, all Christians are living testimonies who represent our Christ to the world. What will they see in you? A miserable, joyless faith? Or the light of Christ that brings unspeakable joy? my journal 4

My Journal Building Godly Families Throughout Scripture, God reveals the importance of the family as the backbone of society. Weaken the family, and sooner or later, society will collapse. There is no doubt; the Biblical concept of family is under attack. To counteract it, we must build strong families in Christ and remain alert to the dangers of drifting along lazily with the culture. This month s journal on Building Godly Families is designed to teach you Biblical Truths to help you build the foundation for a godly family. Rest assured, when God is at the center of the family, God grows, blesses, guides, and protects the family. Together, we will discover how a parent s faith actions impact a family. We will learn the tenets of fatherly priesthood and will discuss the importance of husbands and fathers reclaiming this role in their families. We will also learn the danger the subtle sin of compromise is to our families. We hope you will prayerfully read through this month s journal and then will share it with a friend. 8 k1 B u i l d i n g G o d l y F a m i l i e s J o u r n a l w e e Children are a Heritage of the Lord Sometimes you may not feel as though your children are a heritage of the Lord depending on their level of obedience or decision-making that day. But some days, your children may not be particularly excited about the heritage they see you leaving them. There s a story of a boy who came home from school and he said to his father, Dad, there was a kid at school who told me, You are just like your father. His father replied, Well, what did you say, son? The son said, Nothing he is a whole lot bigger than I am. It is important to know the heritage, or legacy, you are leaving. Psalm 127 is one of the very few psalms Solomon, the son of King David, wrote. In it, he warns that if you leave God out of your life and your family s life, it is useless to work hard to provide for your family. If you leave God out of your life and out of your family s life, all the trinkets in the world will mean nothing. If you leave God out of your family s daily devotion and commitment, all the money in the world will only ruin them instead of helping them. If you take God out of the center of your family s devotion and commitment the inheritance you leave them will turn out to be a curse and not a blessing. Unless God is at the center of your family, your family is adrift. Conversely, when God is at the center of the family, God grows the family. When God is at the center of the family, God blesses the family. When He is at the center, God guides the family. And when God is the focus of a family, He protects the family. When God s wisdom, through the Word of God, fills the house, spiritual maturity will be the insignia imprinted on the mind of every family member. When God s presence fills the house and permeates the family, peace will fill the minds of the members of your household. When God is sought in every family decision, God s grace will fill the heart, mind, spirit and soul of each member of your family. my journal 6 Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Psalm 127:3

When children are brought up to know and love the Lord, obeying His Word and honoring their fathers and their mothers, God will grow and bless the family. Not only must we have a relationship with God to build a strong family, we must model that relationship for our children, so they will go on to build strong families in Christ. Children who see their parents go to the Lord for guidance grow up going to the Lord for guidance. Children who observe their parents regularly and systematically studying the Word of God for life direction, go to the Word of God for direction in their own lives. The Lord longs to see godly family legacies left all over the country, all over the city. God longs to gather families under His wing and under His protection as the mother hen does when danger is near. The question is, do we, as parents, place Him at the center of our lives? Write a prayer to the Lord about the legacy and heritage you would like to leave for your family. It is never too late to realign your family and place God at the center. MY J O U R N A L may

2 B u i l d i n g G o d l y F a m i l i e s J o u r n a l w e e k Believing for Your Family There s a story in John 4 of a royal official whose son was sick. The official went to Jesus and begged Him to heal the boy. Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders, Jesus told him, you will never believe, (v. 50). The official asked again. It was then Jesus replied that he may go, his son was going to live. Verses records: The man took Jesus at his word and departed. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour. Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, Your son will live. So he and all his household believed. This man s faith grew as he stepped forward in believing Jesus. What began as a crisis faith grew into a continuing faith and then into a confident faith. When his son was healed, he had a confirmed faith, which ultimately became a contagious faith. This official had a crisis and he sought Jesus out. His request for Jesus to heal his boy is in the continuous tense in the original language. It is a clear indication of this man s persistence in his request. He was not going to let up. He continuously asked the Lord Jesus to heal his son. Believing God for your family must move from a crisis faith to a continuous, persistent faith. Otherwise, there s something wrong. You must trust in God and His intentions for your family, not just when you are in crisis, but daily, continuously believing and trusting God. You must daily believe the promises of God on behalf of your family. This nobleman s crisis faith gave way to continuing faith and then developed into a confident faith. In verse 50, it says the man took Jesus at His word: You may go. Your son will live. my journal 8 Go, Jesus replied, your son will live. John 4:50

See, confident faith takes God at His word. Confident faith trusts God even when evidence cannot be seen. Confident faith does not doubt in the dark what God has already revealed in the light. Crisis faith, when it gives way to continuing faith, develops into a confident faith. Eventually, confident faith will become confirmed faith sometimes sooner, sometimes later. This member of Herod s court believed God for his family. He trusted Jesus word and when his servants reported his son s return to health, his confident faith was confirmed. Then, naturally and ultimately, it will become a contagious faith. In verse 53, when the nobleman confirmed the healing of his son, the Bible said, he and all his household believed. If your confirmed faith does not become a contagious faith, there s something wrong with that faith. If you are keeping your faith a secret, there s something wrong, not in the faith itself or in the object of faith which is the Lord but in the container of faith. True faith has to be a contagious faith. You cannot help spreading the germs of faith. God works with families. God wants to work in families. God blesses whole families. God wants whole families to follow Him in worship. And that is why we must believe God for our family. MY J O U R N A L may

k3 B u i l d i n g G o d l y F a m i l i e s J o u r n a l w e e The Priesthood of the Father In the Old Testament, priests stood between God and man and offered sacrifices to God on behalf of repentant sinners. However, before this system came into existence, God commissioned the father to be the priest of the home. There is no denying the fact that some husbands and fathers have not lived up to their God-given priesthood. Thankfully, this is changing. For the past several years, there are hundreds of thousands of husbands and fathers around the world who are repenting and recommitting themselves to following God s model for fatherhood. Scripture gives us all kinds of models of fathers, some we don t want to model, and others we do. Job stands out as a great model of an earthly father because he understood that the role of the priesthood of the husband and father was an all-inclusive, sacred duty before God and Job practiced that priesthood. Job modeled three important things for his children: cultivating commitment, cultivating compassion, and cultivating consistency. The Bible says that Job rose early in the morning to offer a sacrifice on behalf of his family. That is a commitment. The final sacrifice for sin was fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The commitment for today s family priest is to get up and offer to God the praises that are due His name on behalf of his family. Get up early in the morning and intercede on behalf of your family. If fathers in America would do this on behalf of their children, we would have a revival like the world has never seen. In addition to commitment, Job was cultivating compassion. We are told that Job had seven sons and three daughters and the boys took turns hosting the whole family. They were modeling their father s compassion. Job trained his sons to be generous and to be gentlemen. Job trained his sons to be hospitable and responsible. And Job trained his sons to be leaders. He taught them to model The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised. Job 1:21 my journal 10

compassion. They took turns, the Bible says, bringing the family together in fellowship, to break down barriers and miscommunication in the family and to build unity among family members. Job cultivated commitment, compassion, and consistency in his family. Daily, Job s family saw his intercession on behalf of the family. They saw him repent and ask for forgiveness something that impacted them as greatly as anything else. Job s consistency was manifested in his sacrifice, in his repentance, in his confession, and in his asking God for forgiveness. Being consistent does not mean being perfect. Being consistent does not mean that you always have to be right. That is the root of trouble. Be careful. The Bible said Pride comes before the fall. But being consistent means that you know how to repent and ask for forgiveness when you blow it. Take a moment and consider how you are leading your family. Are they seeing you model commitment, compassion and consistency? Remember, no one is perfect. Commit your ways to the Lord and ask for His help below. MY J O U R N A L may 2013

k4 B u i l d i n g G o d l y F a m i l i e s J o u r n a l w e e The Subtle Sin of Compromise Temptation does not come all at once; it is constantly advancing and every one of us is susceptible to it. Every one of us. Every person who is saved must be on their guard against the subtle, constant advancement of sin. Remember, a little bit of sin does not stay a little bit for very long. Lot was a man who began with a little bit of sin, but he ended up in a whole lot of trouble. He ended up in a bushel of big sins. Lot began taking baby steps toward greed and selfishness, and he ended up swimming in sin. Lot is an example of a Christian who becomes worldly and half-hearted about his or her faith, a Christian who uses all of the right words and yet rationalizes covetousness as good. Lot s first step to swimming in sin was looking toward Sodom. In the original language the meaning was looking with longing. He was looking with inner discontentment on where he was. Once you look for too long, the second step is imminent. Lot s second step was that he pitched his tent toward Sodom. Some translations say, near Sodom. From what he had seen, apparently he had made rationalizations and moved closer to the wicked city. The moment you pitch your tent near Sodom, there is a 99 percent chance that you will be within the city in a very short period of time. Whatever fire you re playing with, don t fool yourself by thinking that, like the moth, you re going to fly close to the flame but you are not going to get burnt. For as surely as the devil is real, the third step will be living inside of your Sodom. In Genesis 14:12, where is Lot? In the very heart of the city. When you pitch your tent near Sodom, it is as good as moving into Sodom. And Lot s fourth and final step was that he became a fixture in Sodom. The Bible said he was sitting at the gateway of Sodom. The gateway, in the Old Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord. Genesis 13:12-13 my journal 12

Testament particularly, was where the ruling elders of the city council would sit. Lot became a prominent member of Sodom s society. He was swimming in a whole lot of big sin. You see, Sodom was inside of Lot way before Lot was inside of Sodom and Lot was bringing up his family in that swimming pool of sin. The warning for us is to protect our families by being vigilant against temptation. It is not about the public image we present to people. The problem is not the language we use the language of Zion. The problem is compromising the Truth for greed and selfish gain and pretending that these compromises will not impact our relationship with God and the future of our families. God is not looking for perfection, but He is also not looking for rationalization. He is looking for repentance. He is looking for men and women who know how to confess, repent and how to turn from sin. This is one of the most important things you can model for your family. Are you looking toward Sodom? Have you pitched your tent toward Sodom? Are you more worried about accumulating possessions than honoring the Lord? Do you worry and obsess over managing these possessions, holding them tighter? Do you envy others? Do you focus on what you don t have? Are you ungrateful? The answers to these questions will indicate where you have pitched your tent. MY J O U R N A L may 2013

F R A N K LY S P E A K I N G Share the Values of Giving with Your Family Frank Patterson A key aspect of building a godly family is creating and then assessing family priorities and goals including a family giving plan. Does your family have a giving plan? Are your children involved in the selection of your charitable organizations? Educating your children in sound stewardship principles is a vital part of raising them in the fear and nurture of the Lord. If you have a giving plan, review it with your family. If you do not have a plan, take time as a family to build one by asking the following questions: Why do we give? How much should we give? How often should we give? Where should we give and why? While bringing focus to your giving plan, these basic questions can be a way to encourage and develop a heart for giving within your family. You may even want to create a Family Mission Statement to guide your family s current and future giving. A sample mission statement may be: We tithe each month in accordance with Scripture and give our free will offerings to charities that alleviate spiritual and physical suffering and poverty around the world. We commit our lives to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with our neighbors near and far. Review your mission statement and giving commitments regularly as a family. Join together to regularly pray over your gifts and their recipients. When you receive testimonies or reports from the charities you support, share this information with your family. It will help them to realize the impact their gifts are having on others and will encourage them in future generosity. Frankly Speaking, Frank Patterson giving@leadingtheway.org my journal 18

Softcover Book: Order BK0029 $13 (US) $13 (CAN) $13 (AUD) 9 (UK) Divine Discontent Audio Series Your dissatisfaction with life can be a good thing. Do you have a feeling that you can t shake that life could deliver much more than you re experiencing right now? The lack of peace might keep you up at night, or it could be a steady background hum that is not quieted by bigger accomplishments or more possessions. What you crave goes much deeper. You long for an end to the inner turmoil; you crave freedom from anxiety, guilt, anger, or fear. People have sought the answer in career advancement, recreation, relationships even religious devotion. But God s Word demonstrates that dissatisfaction with life is a spiritual problem. It s an inner thirst that can be quenched only by God. Does contentment have to remain just out of reach, or can we arrive at a place of peace and rest? In his series, Divine Discontent, Michael Youssef introduces you to Biblical characters who followed their inner restlessness back to God who, in His grace, invites all to enter His rest. 5 Messages on CD: Order AL0080C $25 (US) $25 (CAN) $25 (AUD) 16 (UK) TO PLACE AN ORDER, USE THE ENCLOSED ENVELOPE OR CALL (US and Canada), (Australia), OR (UK). 24 Twas a Shee p (author unknown) Twas a sheep, not a lamb, that strayed away in the parable Jesus told. A grown-up sheep that had gone astray from the ninety and nine in the fold. Out in the meadows, out in the cold, twas a sheep the Good Shepherd sought; And back to the flock, safe into the fold, twas a sheep the Good Shepherd brought. And why for the sheep should we earnestly long and as earnestly hope and pray? Because there is danger, if they go wrong, they will lead the lambs astray. For the lambs will follow the sheep, you know, wherever the sheep may stray; When the sheep go wrong, it will not be long till the lambs are as wrong as they. And so with the sheep we earnestly plead, for the sake of the lambs today; If the sheep are lost, what terrible cost some of the lambs will have to pay! Non-Profit Org. U.S. Postage P.O.
