1 SPEAKER BIOS ARCHBISHOP MARK COLERIDGE Archbishop Mark Benedict Coleridge was born in Melbourne on 25 September, 1948, the third of five children of Bernard Coleridge and Marjorie Harvey (both deceased). Archbishop Coleridge s education was split between South Australia and Victoria, with attendance at primary schools in Tranmere (St Joseph s School) and Adelaide (Rostrevor College) before the completion of his senior years in Melbourne (St Kevin s College). At tertiary level he was awarded an Arts degree, majoring in English and French, from Melbourne University. Initially these studies were undertaken with a view to entering the diplomatic corps, however circumstances changed and he subsequently pursued a vocational call instead. Archbishop Mark s study for the priesthood was undertaken at Corpus Christi College s various campuses at Werribee, Glen Waverley and Clayton during the years He was ordained a priest in St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne on 18 May 1974 by Bishop John Kelly, then serving as Administrator of the diocese following the retirement of Cardinal James Knox. After Ordination, he worked as an assistant priest in various Melbourne parishes for a few years before studying Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. After four years in Rome and Jerusalem he returned to Melbourne to teach Scripture. Three years later he was again back in Rome for doctoral studies, after which he returned to teach in Melbourne and was eventually made the Master of Catholic Theological College. In late 1997 he was both greatly surprised and humbled to be invited to work in the Vatican Secretariat of State. Four years later he returned to Australia and was episcopally ordained Auxiliary Bishop for Melbourne. In 2004 he was appointed a member of the pontifical Council for Culture and Chair of the Roman Missal Editorial Committee of the International Committee for English in the Liturgy. He was subsequently named Chair of the International Commission for the Preparation of an English-language Lectionary. In 2006, he was appointed as Archbishop of the Canberra and Goulburn Archdiocese upon the retirement of the long serving Archbishop Francis Carroll. In 2011, he was appointed a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. On 2 April 2012, he was named Metropolitan Archbishop of Brisbane. Archbishop Coleridge s move to the Brisbane Archdiocese has elevated him to the role of a Metropolitan - i.e. the head of a See with suffragan dioceses. Although all bishops are deemed to be on equal footing, the Metropolitan See of Brisbane makes Archbishop Coleridge the head of the province of Queensland (which also comprises the suffragan dioceses of Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns). Page 1 of 8

2 In reflecting upon his four decades as a priest and a Bishop, Archbishop Coleridge has noted that almost nothing had turned out as he expected, but invariably events had turned out better than they would have had he planned them himself. As he has been moved to reflect Jesus often surprises, but he never disappoints. My work is often concerned with social justice and making people think about issues of change. An extension of this includes presenting the stories of Jesus as they would appear today, set in Townsville. This involves rethinking the New Testament stories and making changes that transform the narrative intention to our contemporary time. For example, the donkey (the humble form of transport Jesus rode into the city) becomes a bicycle. Early Renaissance painting has inspired my work. Renaissance symbolism is transformed into objects which resonate with tropical Townsville and are relevant to our contemporary life. Page 3 of 8

4 FR ROB GALEA Fr Rob Galea is an ordained Catholic Priest and is currently serving in Shepparton, Australia after moving to Australia in 2007 from Malta, his home country. He is a singer and songwriter with a comparable international fan base. Apart from a series of recordings and CD releases, Fr Rob has also written a number of songs for various campaigns and international conferences. Fr Rob has recorded with several renowned artists such as pop idol Guy Sebastian, Paulini, Gary Pinto, Natasha Pinto and Amelia Farrugia and has shared the stage with the likes of Matt Maher, Hillsong United, Darlene Zschech and more. After being selected to sing in the international version of the official 2008 World Youth Day song, Receive the Power, Fr Rob entered the realm of the cast of musicians having performed in some key events before an estimated 500,000 pilgrims in Sydney. Fr Rob s passion is to draw others to the heart of God. He believes that music is an important instrument in helping people understanding the need for intimacy with God. Fr Rob has released six music projects to date. In all this, whilst greatly appreciating his gift of music, Fr Rob recognises that before everything he is a follower of Christ, a priest and only then, a musician. In 2008 Fr Rob, together with the late Bishop Joe Grech, founded the Stronger Youth Program - a series of youth retreats, rallies and small groups which are run around the Sandhurst Diocese, Victoria, Australia. By God s grace, Stronger is fast becoming one of country Victoria s largest Catholic youth movements. MICHAEL GALOVIC Born and schooled in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Michael Galovic is a graduate from the Belgrade Academy of Arts in He began absorbing the ancient tradition of iconography as a child, while watching his stepfather restoring frescoes and icons in Serbian churches and monasteries; he commenced painting icons in his late teens in parallel with his studies at the Academy. Eager to see the world, after his graduation Michael travelled extensively and has lived in the Middle East, Spain and Africa, trying himself in areas other than art and absorbing the contrasting richness and beauty of different cultures. Early in 1990 Australia became his new home. Since then Michael has held many solo shows of his icons and contemporary artwork throughout Australia. His one-man shows overseas have been in Peru, USA, United Kingdom, Serbia, South Korea, Iceland, New Caledonia, France, Ecuador, and in new Zealand he exhibits on a regular basis. Michael's group exhibitions include Windows on Eternity in 1992, The Blake Prize for Religious Art in 1993, 2004 and 2010, the Mary MacKillop Art Award in 1995 and the Loughing and Loving Jesus in Today, Michael Galovic engages himself in a few parallel directions: traditional icons, contemporary religious and non-religious art. His main focus is the crucifixion theme as well as Stabat Mater Dolorosa in the realm of religious art; Ayers Rock or Uluru, the sacred Rock in the Northern Territory of Australia is another strong point of interest in his contemporary art explorations. The work of Michael Galovic can be found in over eighty churches and institutions throughout mainly Australia, and then in New Zealand and other countries. He has created first icons of now Saint Mary MacKillop long before she was canonised, a number of which can be seen all over the country. He has created icons of saints who were not represented in icons to this day or made his own versions of rare iconic representations such as: St Patrick, St Finbar, St Brendan, St John Baptist de la Salle, St Francis Xavier, St Gerard Majella, St Charles of Mount Argas, St Oliver Plunkett, St Lucy etc. His first commission for the Marist Brothers in Australia was of Blessed Marcellin, and then after the canonisation, he created other icons of St Marcellin, St Peter Chanel for a number of Marist schools and offices, such as Mittagong, Page 4 of 8

5 Drummoyne. In late 2012, Marists have acquired three major contemporary religious artworks from Michael, for their offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. In September 2006, a quality hardcover art book Icons+Art: Michael Galovic was published by Honeysett Press featuring Michael's work from in Australia. This monograph has won 10 national awards and is still the first and only book on icons by an Australian in this country. In 2008, Michael was commissioned by four eastern Catholic Churches to create an icon of St Benedict, to be given to Pope Benedict XVI during His visit to Sydney for the World Youth Day. After many years of teaching and art making, Michael is now devoted solely to his art practice in his studio on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia.
