4 Moments of fulfillment in ministry are always centered on the connection between God and humanity. One Sunday as I was teaching, a visitor arrived to join our group. This five-year-old boy entered the room with a pleasant and energetic disposition. Brian was quickly incorporated into the group and my fellow worship explorers and I went about our order of worship as usual, welcoming each other and readying ourselves to hear the telling of God s story. After hearing the story and engaging a healthy round of wondering, we settled into responding to what God might be telling us. As we each settled into our own space, we colored, re-imagined Bible stories, or created sculptures out of Play-doh. Brian enthusiastically kneaded his dough as he signaled that he would like company. I quietly sidled up to him and listened as his own story came out in a rush. My dad died. He was in a car going too fast. My mom was in the hospital and he was drinking too um, going too fast As his words continued I listened, realizing that this moment was an event where Brian was reaching out and I was a representative of Christ, reaching back. In this moment, space was made where the presence of God was experienced; these moments are fulfillments of God s call to us. As we are faithful to make space to listen for God, we will be surprised to realize that God's infinite love has always been reaching out to us. As followers of Christ, success is sharing that love with every person we encounter. Describe the ministry setting to which you believe God is calling you. I am called to a setting which works to embrace one another and collaborate together as followers of Christ in order to faithfully share the gospel in its particular context. God has equipped me to be a pastor theologian. My God-given personality and life experiences have developed in me a strong desire to offer pastoral care and theological exploration in all aspects of church life, from Sunday morning worship celebrations to Bible studies and community work days. I learned a long time ago not to be closed minded about where God might call me next. I am continually grateful for the surprising ways God has guided me to join communities of faith in their work and mission. I look forward to the next adventure! What areas of growth have you identified in yourself? In recent years I have grown in my understanding of what it means to ask for help as a leader. There was a time when I saw a leader s responsibility as being one of meeting needs without the help of others. I avoided burdening others with the tasks involved with the ministry under my purview. My view is shifting into understanding that signaling for help is providing opportunities for others to be co-participators in the call to share the gospel with each other and our broader community. My most recent position has called on me to engage more in social media and the development of an online presence in the church setting. In the past, I have not been naturally drawn to using technology as an element of mission. I am grateful to say that I have grown to embrace some of the benefits of a well-tended online presence for a congregation. I seek to continue learning faithful ways to incorporate technology into the work and mission of the church while honoring tradition and personal interaction. Describe a time when you have led change. When I began my time as Office and Financial Administrator at The First Presbyterian Church of Dutch Neck, I was presented with the challenge of taking a 35 hour per week position and developing it into a 20 hour per week position. Such a move required me to think creatively with a mind toward how the needs of the church would continue to evolve in the future. I saw that my role involved acting as a ministry facilitator and a curious witness. From my place at the church office desk, I was able to encourage members to reimagine their perception of the office role and how they see themselves as participators in the everyday life and work of the church. Their ordinary contributions are, in fact, opportunities to live out the mission of the body of believers. And as a curious witness I am able to quietly observe the operations of the church from an outsider s perspective and make observations in hopes that others will benefit. It is my great joy to encourage the faithful work of the church and to help shine light on previously missed opportunities to share its mission to the community. In this way I have led change by encouraging self-awareness both by acknowledging the wonderful things that are already happening and encouraging the exploration of new ways to use gifts that are present in the congregation. 5 I trust in God, the creator of the world. Humanity was created in the image of God to be in relationship with God. Humanity brings discord to this relationship when it fails to recognize what God has done and will do through Jesus. God longs to bring all of creation into harmony with God s being. I trust in Jesus Christ, the redeemer of the world, present before the world began and Word of life to all creation. Jesus was sent by God, in and through God s spirit, as fully human and fully divine. He walked the earth teaching that a different type of kingdom was at hand. This new kingdom was unlike those of human design; it upended human ideas of hierarchy. He led by example: eating with outcasts, feeding the hungry, and freeing the oppressed. Many did not like his actions and sought to kill him. He gave himself, freely and sinless, to be crucified and buried a sacrifice for the sins of all humankind and an unequaled act of grace and love. He arose on the third day, demonstrating his power and divinity a hope for all humankind. It is through Christ that God reconciles the world to God s self. I anticipate with joy the return of Jesus and the final completion of the kingdom of God. I trust in God the Holy Spirit, the sustainer of the world, who was and is at work in the world before, during, and since the creation of the world. The Spirit continues to work in the world and in the church, empowering, guiding, and sustaining the church to be the people of God. The Holy Spirit is at work in me as I make my way on this journey. I trust in the mystery of the Triune God, one God in three persons. There is no greater mystery than God, who works in the world at once acting as creator, redeemer, and sustainer. It is leaning into this mystery that challenges me to constantly imagine and reimagine my faith. It is only through the incredible grace of God that I am provided for, forgiven, and empowered. I trust scripture as the unique and authoritative witness to God s revelation in Jesus Christ. It is not a document reserved for a single time in history. Scripture is living and active through the power of the Holy Spirit. As I continue to read, teach, and preach scripture, I am drawn closer to God. I trust in the Church, which is redeemed and incredibly messy at the same time. Jesus Christ is the head of the Church. He calls us tobe a community of believers that cares for each other and seeks good for all people. As we follow Christ s instruction to participate in the sacraments of communion and baptism (visible signs of invisible grace), we are sent to proclaim the healing gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that is wounded by sin. As all creation groans for the return of Christ, the church is charged by God to act as witness by following Christ s example: eating with outcasts, feeding the hungry, freeing the oppressed, and caring for creation.
